Video: Candidate Obama knocks Musharraf for … signing peace treaties with the Taliban

More flashback fun via Omri Ceren, remembering the days when the Taliban were an intractable jihadist opponent rather than the plucky band of Afghan patriots we’ve come to know and respect. I’m sure there are dozens more gold nuggets like this buried in the YouTube mines in case anyone wants to go digging. The comic prospect of watching Gibbs try to explain them away, perhaps by distinguishing the “bad” Pakistani Taliban from the “good” Afghan Taliban, should more than compensate you for your labor.
To meditate on while you watch, a new poll from Gallup/USA Today finds that 48 percent want more troops in Afghanistan, 38 percent want fewer troops, and just seven percent want to keep the number as is — which of course is what the Obama plan is shaping up to be. It’s one thing to lose men when you’re trying to win the war, it’s another to lose the war but save Americans’ lives in withdrawing, but it’s something else entirely to keep men in the line of fire with no hope of victory. And yet, here we are. Do note the partisan breakdown at the link, too. If Obama decides to follow McChrystal’s advice he’ll have the support of just 36 percent of Democrats — and 73 percent of Republicans. Remember that the next time a liberal comes crying to you about the GOP reflexively opposing everything The One does.

I found it kind of interesting that these were the top two headlines when I checked the headlines on Yahoo news. Gee, it’s a good thing we’re not going to be focusing on the Taliban anymore.

About everything Obama spouted during his Adoration and Prevarication Campaign, one can only say:
“YOU LIE!”

Aiiight…this and Drudge Report’s article has turned me into Grizzly Mama Bear (channeling Sarah Palin). Spread the word around, ppl. Get ‘em back. Obama doesn’t have to know. Will he know? Maybe in a month!
If this scenario plays, next time he speaks with the generals he would find out that DISSENT IS PATRIOTIC.

Please don’t insult the cavemen. At least they got to kill dinosaurs and whatever else roamed the Earth; that takes some cojones.
This one is just a daily Jack-In-A-Box. Every single day some crap is up! UURRRGGHHH!!!!

38 months to go. Sigh.

He seemed so…nonthreatening at the time. I just don’t understand how he could turn his back on so many principles he so fervently argued for…?
Oh wait, he’s a politician. Forgot about that.

Lefties are completely able to justify this. Obama, in their mind, is being misled and thinks a troop increase will help Afghan women etc. But the Republicans are just doing it to kill more brown people and/or secure an oil pipeline.

We are at war with Eastasia. We have always been at war with Eastasia.

Obama has confused everyone about Afghanastan. What’s it about? What are our goals? He announced a big new strategy. Even at the time, I didn’t hear a strategy at all.
Anyway, that’s just Obama. He blew smoke a lot.

Say did that turning belly up to Russia at least get us a second and necessary supply line to Afghanistan so we can operate independently if Pakistan goes belly-up?
No.
Did he seek help from Hillary’s contacts to get a passage through Georgia, Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea, to Turkmenistan so that the US could open up an independent supply line?
No.
We still need a second supply line as we have suffered from having the current ones squeezed by the joint al Qaeda, Talibe, LeT, HeI affiliates, and others who have become the Shadow Army. With 90% of our troops being supplied from Pakistan’s seaports and only 10% by air supply in the low lift area we call Afghanistan, that means we ae ceding the battlefield to an unstable Nation under extreme threat and those forces threatening them. I am glad Pakistan is fighting back, but I wish they would stop funding these groups as it is counter-productive to their long term survival as a Nation.
And have we gotten Pakistan’s ISI to stop that funding?
No.
That has been my criticism of Bush and now Obama and its the same damned criticism as neither of these Presidents is willing to address the logistical nightmare we are in. With an independent supply line we can change the Rules of Engagement with impunity. Obama talked a lot about going after the enemy as they retreated into Pakistan. To do that you need a second supply line so we can do that and tell Pakistan that we are doing the job they can’t do.
That takes strategic understanding of what makes war run, how to ensure supply lines and then doing what is necessary to win. Iraq was damned easy in comparison to Afghanistan, and we are not fighting by modern logistics nor fighting in a way that could win via a smaller footprint and ancient logistics as Alexander the Great did in the exact, same place. He won with less than 10,000 troops: his empire didn’t die in Afghanistan it was cemented there and was the high point as going to India proved to be too much to bite, chew and swallow with 10,000 troops. Just to kill the ‘Empires die in Afghanistan’ trope, Alexander’s died with him after being victorious in the region and winning. We do not learn from him and refuse to fight with our understanding of modern logistics. That is not a recipe for success.
Same outlook for both Presidents, same criticism for both as both have not done what it takes to create the platform for victory. And if Obama did the things necessary to win he would get my applause and support in those venues.

At what point does Colin Powell come out from hiding?

And the president with the reptile tongue has spoken out of both sides of his mouth again. What kind of grade does TIME give him for that!

For the first time in my life, I am NOT proud of my country (as represented by our president).
It is 1984! And we are all Winston Smith and are living in Room 101.

So, in other words the Taliban has just turned into ACORN. Oh, systemically they are a fine upstanding organization. It is just a few bad apples, after all, that tarnish its otherwise marvelous image.
