Socialist millionaire: People who default on their mortgages are like rape victims or something

posted at 4:14 pm on October 7, 2009 by Allahpundit

Only now, after watching this, do I grasp the full horror of what Polanski did to that little girl. Why, he treated her like some common loan applicant, didn’t he?

Seriously, what is it with media liberals minimizing rape lately? First the Polanski spirit squad rallies to defend a child molester, replete with Obama cheerleader Tom Shales hinting that 13-year-olds should be fair game in Hollywood. Now here comes this guy treating subprime borrowers who took out mortgages they couldn’t afford like they’re Jodie Foster being slammed down on the pinball machine in “The Accused.” My memory of commercial law is hazy but signing your name to a contract does usually imply consent, no? Or does he mean to suggest that the poor, as eternal victims of the great bourgeois conspiracy, can never meaningfully consent? That would fit better with the socialist view of the lower class as essentially children, who can’t fairly be held to the same standard of personal responsibility as middle-class “adults.”

And yet, I can’t stay mad at him. For one thing, his willingness to resort to nutty rhetoric like this ensures that he’ll remain a fringe figure. And for another, check out the exchange he had with Hannity about Jesus and Al Qaeda. Sean dodges the question with a joke but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good question. Click the image to watch.

Ugh. I hate when people to simplify the Bible to one verse. It is asinine. Jesus said to love your enemy but NO where in the Bible does it say not use self-defense and defeat people who are trying to KILL YOU! God oftentimes took revenge on Israel’s enemies. I really dislike when people try to simply the Bible.

And no Allahpundit it wasn’t a good question.

My memory of commercial law is hazy but signing your name to a contract does usually imply consent, no?

Libs look at all contracts as they see the Constitution – as living documents. The written words mean nothing to them. Part and parcel of viewing documents as living documents without any meaning, other than what someone decides to apply to them, today, signatures are not binding in any way, as they are as much “alive” as the document, itself. This means that ones signature is only binding on a given day, if that binding helps the piberal cause in some way.

This is not news and is not too difficult to see as one of the consequences of the liberals’ desire for a Rule of Man and the denigration of any attempts at a Rule of Law. Why are you surprised?

Moore’s interviews are nothing more than a series of straw men, questions answered with questions, mockings, really, really bad analogies, and straight up lies.

It is the equivalent of trying to catch a greased pig. (Pun intended.)

Hannity was not up to the challenge. He let his slip through his fingers.

Daddy-O on October 7, 2009 at 4:29 PM

Seriously, what is it with media liberals minimizing rape lately?

Moore wasn’t so much minimizing rape as he was exaggerating the plight of loan applicants. Your post implies tacit approval, or a “playing down” of rape, which or course you know didn’t happen at all. It was a dumb comparison but the whole point of it was that blaming the victim is flatly wrong in either case. Where was the minimization?

And needless to say, even a facetious comparison of his comment to Polanski’s actions or the reactions to Polanski’s actions is ridiculous. Aren’t you minimizing Polanksi’s crime by somehow relating it to Moore’s comment here?

BadgerHawk on October 7, 2009 at 4:41 PM

Sean dodges the question with a joke but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good question. Click the image to watch.

No, it isn’t.

Al Qaeda is a group, not a person. The IRA is not a terrorist. It is a terrorist organization. We are commanded to love our neighbor, love our enemies and love those that despitefully use us. That love does not trump the necessity of self-preservation and of justice, and it certainly doesn’t absolve us of our duty to protect and defend those persons and institutions we are responsible for. I am commanded to turn the other cheek, not consign my friends and neighbors to annihilation. I guess Moore would have us turn in Jews to Nazis for fear of telling a lie at the door.

God hates things, as should we. God hates lies, deceit, murder and all those religious and political doctrines that men use to justify their wretchedness.

crr6 on October 7, 2009 at 4:29 PM

Moore is minimizing the status of “victim.” A rape victim is a true victim, I think by any definition of the term. But a person who is contractually bound to the terms of a mortgage document he voluntarily signed is not necessarily a victim, unless you minimize (and morally equivocate) what victimization means.

CarolynM on October 7, 2009 at 4:44 PM

Everyone should keep in mind the simple fact that in a great many instances, perhaps most, the folks who are defaulting on their mortgages were no different from renters: they put nothing down on an interest-only mortgage! How is that different from renting? No equity to lose at all. Consider the closing costs (often folded into the loan) as a damage deposit. In such cases, I have no sympathy at all for those who default.

Henry Bowman on October 7, 2009 at 4:45 PM

How many of these short skirts were “flippers” that bit off more than they could chew. I wonder if Mr. Moore would change his tune if he realized that he wants to give a pass to a bunch of people who were attempting to make evil profit?

Actually, to be legally bound to a contract, the parties that signs have to meet several requirements.

One, you must have reached the age of consent, second, you must not be suffering from “diminished capacity”, ie, you must be of sound mind. Having just written that, I realized that no liberal can ever legally enter into a contract.

It’s more than that. When you sign your mortgage papers, you are told (in like 5 places) what your monthly payments will be. How much will go into escrow, what your APR is, how long it’ll take to off pay off. The total amount paid if you make the minimum each month.

You are even given options on how to shorten the term of the loan by paying it differently (bi weekly instead of monthly). You can refinance.

Nothing is hidden. The paperwork to get a loan is thick.

Apparently, that is very similar to how a rape occurs. According to crr6 and Michael Moore.

Fair enough, and that’s how I read it, as my response to your post clearly indicated. But you flowed from a sentence criticizing AP’s comparison directly into one calling Moore’s stupid. Don’t get mad because someone thought you were still talking about AP.

My issue, to which you haven’t responded, is the fact that you think someone who signed a legally binding contract and then failed to live up to it is somehow a victim. That’s stupid.

Allah, can you stop calling Michael Moore a socialist? He’s not. He’s a hardcore capitalist. He just claims to be a socialist because he makes his money peddling far left movies to left wing morons.

Well, as long as we’re spinning, why doesn’t a liberal bog have the headline… “Moore says blaming the victim in rape is wrong, HA outraged!”

President Michael Moore.

Let that sink in and burn.

Like the morning after a heaping plate of double-jalapeño nachos…

Exactly what I was going to say! Putting Al Qaeda in its place is loving. The worst thing God will do to his child is leave us to our own evil.

Like word-for-word exactly? Because that would be scary.

This word “victim” I do not think it means what you think it means.

lorien1973 on October 7, 2009 at 4:56 PM

Pasalubong you said it!

I like Sean Hannity. His show (on radio) is not bad but it’s by far NO THE BEST!

It shouldn’t be hard to take down Moore. He’s as tranparent as TURKMENBAMA.

Know who can do the job the best? Andrew Wilkow and Jim Quinn (Of “Quinn & Rose”).

I’d love to see those two gents pose over his big, fat mordant body with the (figurative) rifle in their hands when they are done too!

Considering the size of his figure, it must be a pretty frickin huge fringe.
