ABC: Pentagon places “urgent” order for four massive bunker-busting bombs

posted at 4:52 pm on October 7, 2009 by Allahpundit

He’s got the “speak softly” part pretty well covered. Looks like now it’s time for The One to start carrying the big stick. And I do mean big: It’s the largest non-nuclear explosive on earth.

First, some background: Back in October 2007, ABC News reported that the Pentagon had asked Congress for $88 million in the emergency Iraq/Afghanistan war funding request to develop a gargantuan bunker-busting bomb called the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). It’s a 30,000-pound bomb designed to hit targets buried 200 feet below ground. Back then, the Pentagon cited an “urgent operational need” for the new weapon.

Now the Pentagon is shifting spending from other programs to fast forward the development and procurement of the Massive Ordnance Penetrator. The Pentagon comptroller sent a request to shift the funds to the House and Senate Appropriations and Armed Services Committees over the summer.

The comptroller said the Pentagon planned to spend $19.1 million to procure four of the bombs, $28.3 million to accelerate the bomb’s “development and testing”, and $21 million to accelerate the integration of the bomb onto B-2 stealth bombers.

Why now? The notification says simply, “The Department has an Urgent Operational Need (UON) for the capability to strike hard and deeply buried targets in high threat environments. The MOP is the weapon of choice to meet the requirements of the UON.” It further states that the request is endorsed by Pacific Command (which has responsibility over North Korea) and Central Command (which has responsibility over Iran).

Iran’s enrichment site at Qom is, of course, located inside a mountain. Two thoughts. One: This is a relatively cheap form of saber-rattling. $70 million is nothing when it comes to defense outlays; probably the whole point of speeding up production is simply to be able to leak the story to an outlet like ABC so that Iran will see it. Two: They could be rushing this out not because we intend to use it ourselves (the part about outfitting it for the B-2 notwithstanding) but so that we can hand it off to Israel. Do they have anything big enough to carry it, though? I’m guessing yes, as rumors that we might sell them the MOP have surfaced before.

Exit question: Would a man with this on his wall really bomb Iran? I ask you.

Again, I’ll say – this is just contingency planning. I don’t see Ogabe as being anywhere close to hitting Iran.

Now – if you really want to know if we are going to be hitting Iran – watch the contract for CRUISE MISSILES. Even if we execute a limited strike on Iran’s nuke sites – we’re going to have to have gobs of cruise missiles to respond to their counterattacks. I don’t think we’re going to put boots on the ground – I really, really, really don’t see Ogabe ever doing that. That means – stand off weapons only.

Watch the cruise missile contract (if you can – I have no clue where you’d find it) … but CM’s is what we always ran short on – how short? You don’t want to know – but we managed to keep them flying into their targets by doing some pretty creative logistics.

Yeah, except I think what it really highlights is the need for tactical nukes that don’t weigh 15 freaking tons each. Even if the nuke is only propellant to fire some sort of kinetic charge deep into the earth, it’s just another way to make things go bang, and an efficient one at that.

Nukes made conventional explosives obsolete. Only political concerns keep us from using them. This MOP can’t even begin to compare to nukes for penetration. And it’s extremely heavy. As for blast radius a nuke can be thousands of times more powerful as well.

The IAF has no strategic bombers. Not sure but I don’t think F-15i Strike Eagles can carry anything close to this big a payload.

The IAF does have C-130s, which are cargo planes. While cargo planes don’t seem useful as bombers at first glance, The US used C-130s to drop huge 15,000 lb “daisy cutters” in Vietnam. They just rolled them out off the back ramp on pallets over the target. Since the C-130 has both the range and the payload for the mission, the same approach might work for the MOP.

Do you realize what kind of platform it takes to deploy a bomb of this magnitude? My God – it’s huge dude. You cannot put one of these on top of an intercontenental ballistic missile.

Nuclear Ballistic Missiles carry MULTIPLE WARHEADS (plus decoys) and each armed warhead carries much more punch than ONE of these massive conventional bombs. Additionally, since they are fired from Submarines and land stations – they can reach their targets anywhere in the world in minutes.

The C-130 could lift it, but I would imagine the Iranian AAA around the targets and the approaches to them would resemble something like the Haiphong/Hanoi defenses during the Vietnam War. I don’t think C-130′s could survive that.

Then again, any raid would probably be preceded by special ops going in and taking out the radar and communications sites like we did on the eve of the air campaign during Desert Storm.

Last desperate option would be for Israel to airburst some sort of EMP weapon and fry Iran’s entire electrical grid.
