The White House Department of White Coats; Update: DFA supplied the coats?
posted at 10:12 am on October 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Why was the New York Post the only major media organization to report this?
President Obama yesterday rolled out the red carpet — and handed out doctors’ white coats as well, just so nobody missed his hard-sell health-care message.
In a heavy-handed attempt at reviving support for health-care reform, the White House orchestrated a massive photo op to buttress its claim that front-line physicians support Obama. …
The physicians, all invited guests, were told to bring their white lab coats to make sure that TV cameras captured the image.
But some docs apparently forgot, failing to meet the White House dress code by showing up in business suits or dresses.
So the White House rustled up white coats for them and handed them to the suited physicians who had taken seats in the sun-splashed lawn area.
When did the White House add a Wardrobe Czar to the administration? Does this position have Congressional oversight, or did the Obama administration outsource that to Cintas?
Patterico notes that wardrobe malfunctions weren’t the only problem with that staged photo op:
“Dr. Eric Novack was one of the 50 doctors invited to the White House photo op today. But he turned down the invitation, because he has lead the fight to pass state legislation and constitutional amendments to prohibit individual insurance mandates.
“They had 16 hours to Google me, but I guess no one bothered,” Dr. Novack told Kathryn Serkes, Director of Policy and Public Affairs for the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) in a video interview available at www.TakeBackMedicine.com.
Dr. Novack says that it was very tempting to accept the “once-in-a-lifetime” invitation, but in the end, he had to say no. But it also makes him question whether the doctors who will be there today actually support the President, or even understand all of the details of the bills.
“Are these doctors just star-struck, or do they have real knowledge about what they are supporting?” asked Serkes. “It’s looking like another dog-and-pony-show, and doctors should not be used in this shameful manner. First the President vilifies them, now he wants their help.”
“And at the very least, it makes the White House look like it does some very sloppy work,” added Serkes.”
Well, they didn’t exactly worry about that sloppy work when they started passing out uniforms to physicians in the Rose Garden. They probably figured that the mainstream media would turn a blind eye to the clumsy staging, and for the most part, they were right.
Update: If you’re interested in putting a stop to these masquerade parties, go to Patients First and their National Call Congress Day website.
Update II: My friend Tommy Christopher reports that the White House says that Doctors for America, the pro-reform group that arranged for the doctors, handed out the white lab coats and not the White House. That makes a little more sense — after all, I doubt that the White House had a stash of lab coats hanging in the Lincoln Bedroom closet — but who told DFA to outfit the doctors with lab coats? I sincerely doubt that the White House left that detail to DFA’s judgment.

No, I’m saying that the doctors were brought together for a photo op. Given the nature of the event, it is unsurprising that the White House acted to enhance the photo. That’s how photo ops work.
As for Bush’s appearance on carrier, it was an immense waste of time and money and a moment of supreme arrogance and stupidity. If you run into the ex-Prez, ask him if he’d like to have a do-over for that day.

It’s disturbing to know that the White House has a department of propaganda. This is something I would expect from Russia, China or North Korea. Even more disturbing is that the media doesn’t report it.
Obama’s circus and propaganda show is a constant insult to my intelligence. It just shows me what little regard they have for Americans.

Instead of being so amateurish, why doesn’t the administration hire another czar…the magic czar. They could hire someone like Chris Angel to do their photo ops. That way people would know they’re being tricked, they just won’t be able to figure out how it was done.

I am so tired of the games Obama plays. Just because he has a group of people in white chef’s coats surrounding him during his speech in the rose garden, it does not give any more substance or credibility to his sorry sales pitch on Obamacare. He needs to act presidential and quit pretending he’s Speilberg directing the scene. And yeah, I know those were supposed to be lab coats.

Obviously you have no grasp of history. The armored thrust into baghdad was without precedent. An operation of that magnatude against what was arguably the fourth or fifth largest military machine in the world with negligible losses on our side was an example of brilliance.
The mission of waging two major battles, afghanistan and then Iraq, in quick succession was accomplished. Where things fell apart was when the democrats and liberal press started playing their fifth column games. (redundancy alert).
The actions of the bush administration kept the peaceful followers of islam from staging another Beslan, Madrid train bombing, london bombings etc on our soil. Your hero, ozero, is unravelling all of that.

Why would Obama need to “enhance” the photo-op? I thought his policies were super-popular?
If there had been a couple of civilian advisers on-board the aircraft carrier and Bush had asked them to put on some military garb, you’d surely be as forgiving, right? After all, “it’s a photo op. That’s how photo-ops work.”

Another thing about Obama’s garden party yesterday. Didn’t he berate doctors over and over about all the unnecessary tonsillectomies and leg amputations they perform and about their excessive fees and salaries? Sure he did. So I have to wonder why doctors would even be willing to go show their support.

Obama should have thought of this on his trip to Copenhagen. Maybe if he would have dressed up as a runner in his sprinter shorts and have a #1 pinned on his shirt, threw a few gold medals around his neck, had Michelle put on her swimsuit and swimming cap, it would have enhanced their image with the selection committee. Image is everything and he should have looked like an athlete, just like they wanted doctors to look like doctors.

It begs the question – if they’re willing to hand out white lab coats to project a certain message, are they willing to let non-doctors wear those lab coats?
It’s bad enough that they’re trading on the false assumption that the AMA represents most doctors. But for all we know, they could’ve handed out jackets to the groundskeepers at the White House.
hawksruleva on October 6, 2009 at 11:36 AM
No, I’m saying that mock outrage that Obama handed out props during a photo op is contrived, and reminding you that he is hardly the first president to stage a photo op. Bush had every right to stage his own photo ups. Unfortunately, his most famous one was in poor taste and premature. In comparison, the white coats “scandal” is very small potatoes.
And then the war was over and all the troops came home and Iraq unified under democratic rule. “Mission Accomplished” indeed!
And, while Bush deserves credit for keeping us safe after that one time, nothing in Iraq had anything to do with it. I wouldn’t start giving history lectures if I were you.

SPOUSE: “OK, I’ll make sure that your best suit is pressed and ready”
DOCTOR: “Thanks, hon, but instead of my best suit, make sure my best lab coat is pressed and ready. The one made from the Egyptian cotton. I want to look all doctor-y”
SPOUSE: “Good thinking, sweety. That’s why you were smart enough to vote for Obama”
venividivici on October 6, 2009 at 11:42 AM
These doctors ought to be ashamed of themselves for going along with this charade and letting themselves be played for fools. I heard on Fox this morning that a lot of them did not agree with Obama’s position. They actually thought they were there to be heard, which didn’t happen. It was just a blatant photo op. Does Obama actually think he fools us with this crap? They are just dishonest – you can trust nothing you see and hear from this crowd.

BTW, kid, as pResdent Bill Clinton staged 4 aircraft carrier photo ops. He even did 2 of them on the same boat. And he was a draft-dodger.

Bush never claimed Iraq had anything to do with 9/11. However, a Bill Clinton-appointed Federal Judge in Manhattan did rule in 2003 that Iraq played a role in 9/11, but that is beside the point.
Bill Clinton’s Justice Department tied Iraq to al Qaeda in 1998. Read the indictment.
And later the same year ABC News’ Sheila McVicar did lengthy reporting on the ties between al Qaeda and Iraq.
Only one here needing a history lesson is yourself.

Well, you are not me, so deal with it.
So, on what are you basing your “nothing in Iraq had anything to do with it”?? We will never know the full decision process which the way things work.
1. Islam has been trying to convert, kill or subjugate us since 700 AD. This is not Bush’s war. It has been going on for well over a millenium. Occassionally, they get setbacks at the hands of the likes of Charles Martel or Jan II Sobieski.
2. One does not have to be in the trade to understand that truckloads of intel were gathered from the caves in afghanistan. We will never know what that intel trove contained. However, it is reasonable to assume that there were some credible links between terrorism and iraq
3. Iraq was providing a safe harbor for known terrorists, had used WMDs and was giving every indication they were working on NBC weapons. Hey, if I wave a toy gun outside a police station, I would expect consequences. Saddam either had nukes or was trying to make us think he had nukes.
4. As an aside, saddam was an incredibly evil regime. Tell us, do you weep for a regime that had rape rooms, millions of people dissappearing, gassing of men women and children, throwing people to tigers? killing people with weak acid baths so they died slowly as their skin dissolved? Throwing people into tree shredders feet first? Tell me. Do you cry for that regime and the bastrd tyrant who headed it?

Now that there are numerous examples of our Dear Leader’s propaganda machine at work, I think it is time for a new thread to expand on the Obamaturisms/Obamanations… This one should be devoted to Barry’s missteps in the world of political propaganda. Here is the first survey for the best or worst cheesy staged events in Barry’s Potemkin Village:
1. Barry’s staged town hall meetings with his adoring admirers and leg tinglers
2. Barry’s staged doctors in white lab coats from all 57 states showing enthusiastic support for socialized medicine media op at the White House
