The White House Department of White Coats; Update: DFA supplied the coats?
posted at 10:12 am on October 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Why was the New York Post the only major media organization to report this?
President Obama yesterday rolled out the red carpet — and handed out doctors’ white coats as well, just so nobody missed his hard-sell health-care message.
In a heavy-handed attempt at reviving support for health-care reform, the White House orchestrated a massive photo op to buttress its claim that front-line physicians support Obama. …
The physicians, all invited guests, were told to bring their white lab coats to make sure that TV cameras captured the image.
But some docs apparently forgot, failing to meet the White House dress code by showing up in business suits or dresses.
So the White House rustled up white coats for them and handed them to the suited physicians who had taken seats in the sun-splashed lawn area.
When did the White House add a Wardrobe Czar to the administration? Does this position have Congressional oversight, or did the Obama administration outsource that to Cintas?
Patterico notes that wardrobe malfunctions weren’t the only problem with that staged photo op:
“Dr. Eric Novack was one of the 50 doctors invited to the White House photo op today. But he turned down the invitation, because he has lead the fight to pass state legislation and constitutional amendments to prohibit individual insurance mandates.
“They had 16 hours to Google me, but I guess no one bothered,” Dr. Novack told Kathryn Serkes, Director of Policy and Public Affairs for the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) in a video interview available at www.TakeBackMedicine.com.
Dr. Novack says that it was very tempting to accept the “once-in-a-lifetime” invitation, but in the end, he had to say no. But it also makes him question whether the doctors who will be there today actually support the President, or even understand all of the details of the bills.
“Are these doctors just star-struck, or do they have real knowledge about what they are supporting?” asked Serkes. “It’s looking like another dog-and-pony-show, and doctors should not be used in this shameful manner. First the President vilifies them, now he wants their help.”
“And at the very least, it makes the White House look like it does some very sloppy work,” added Serkes.”
Well, they didn’t exactly worry about that sloppy work when they started passing out uniforms to physicians in the Rose Garden. They probably figured that the mainstream media would turn a blind eye to the clumsy staging, and for the most part, they were right.
Update: If you’re interested in putting a stop to these masquerade parties, go to Patients First and their National Call Congress Day website.
Update II: My friend Tommy Christopher reports that the White House says that Doctors for America, the pro-reform group that arranged for the doctors, handed out the white lab coats and not the White House. That makes a little more sense — after all, I doubt that the White House had a stash of lab coats hanging in the Lincoln Bedroom closet — but who told DFA to outfit the doctors with lab coats? I sincerely doubt that the White House left that detail to DFA’s judgment.

If these doctors actually think that this idiotic “plan” is going to improve health care in this country, they should expect the men and the white coats to come for them soon.
Because they’re going to be replaced by third-world, unskilled, dirt cheap, dirty non-english speaking “providers”.
But cheer up, you’ll be able to use your medical skills to help your friends and family, as you go and seek employment that will pay your bills, because being a doctor will not.

According to Fox News not all of those 150 doctors are supportive of ObamaCare. Many of opposisng doctors went thinking they were going to get to have discussions with Obama but he only wanted them for a photo-op and then claim that he had 150 doctors who agreed with him. The empty-suit strikes again.

Because if there is anyone who should be photographed in a clown suit, it’s Pelosi and Reid.

Another shameful act by Obama and his crew that will have virtually no impact on the public. It is hard to laugh about this when it is part of a likely successful plan to cram Obamacare down on us regardless of the feelings of the American people.

I knew handing out lab coats sounded familiar. Back in 1916 when Nathan’s Famous opened in Coney Island, Nathan had a problem. He sold his hot dogs for a nickel, the competition a dime. Business foundered as people were wary of what was in a 5 cent hot dog, until Nathan had an idea. He saw the doctors comming out of nearby Coney Island Hospital in their lab coats. He then hired a group of actors, gave them lab coats and had them eat at his hot dog stand. People saw what they thought were doctors eating the nickel dogs and business took off. Sounds to me like someone at the White House recently ate at a Nathans, read the place mat and stole the idea. Amateur hour indeed.

For what it’s worth, I saw this too. If I recall, these docs were contacted by a doctor group that is, in effect, an arm of one of the groups pushing for reform the way Dems want to impose it. Some of these 150 useful idiots may be just that, but keep your eyes open for reporting (only from Fox News, of course) that some number of them believed that this was about something different.

The doctors, who accepted the invitation, were also asked to bring all the tonsils they’d removed and feet that they had lopped off unnecessarily. All of the doctors forgot this part, but organizers within the Obama administration did not have the time to acquire those props in order to make this photo-op truly authentic.

These docs should feel used. From the moment the white coat brigade came out, it should have been clear that the speech wasn’t at all about getting doctors to “fan out” and project their support. Dog and pony for the viewers back home, situation normal, the campaign goes on.
As Novack said, it would be tough to turn down the invitation on face value, it’d be a once in a lifetime honor for most of us, I applaud his morals.

Okay. Then why aren’t you listening to them?
IBD/TIPP Poll – 9/15/09
72% of the doctors polled disagree with the administration’s claim that the government can cover 47 million more people with better-quality care at lower cost.
• Two-thirds, or 65%, of doctors say they oppose the proposed government expansion plan. This contradicts the administration’s claims that doctors are part of an “unprecedented coalition” supporting a medical overhaul.
• Four of nine doctors, or 45%, said they “would consider leaving their practice or taking an early retirement” if Congress passes the plan the Democratic majority and White House have in mind.

Are you saying that professions and the technical expertise underlying them are “political”? Most Western philosophy separates technical expertise from politics, allowing the disinterested pursuit of knowledge to occur. That is what the symbols of the various trades are meant to represent, knowledge for its own sake, and that is what Obama is trying to exploit here. As for Bush’s appearance on the aircraft carrier, he was Commander in Chief at the time.

Well… This is another Potemkin Village moment for our Dear Leader. The staged event with the “doctors” yesterday is reminiscent of the staged event Barry had on his road trip to Baghdad back in April. At that time, his advance team pre-screened troops by asking who among them had voted for Obama. Those that said they did got into the staged event. They were given the same brand of cameras and were instructed to be very enthusiastic towards the Messiah. In the following link, take a look at the cameras and how staged the event looked:
http://www.thebigfeedblog.com/2009/04/obamas-military-greeting-in-iraq-was.html
The revolting thing about both the fake doctor photo op and the fake military photo op is the mindset that this administration has the we, the American people, are either so fawning and adoring of our Dear Leader and we will believe everything he says, or, we are equally just ignorant and stupid. There is a cynicism in this administration towards the public that rivals some of our more endearing former communist regimes. This most recent staged event further drives that point home. With our Dear Leader’s affinity to Marxism and all things socialist, it stands to reason that he would incorporate the propaganda tactics and strategies of the former Soviet Union with Potemkin Villages, contrived public art, and a state run media to shove his unwanted agenda down our throats. “Damn it comrades American people, I’m the President and with my vast experience and wisdom I know what is best for you.”
By the way Barry… Where is the birth certificate, college transcripts and passport records? We’re waiting Mr. Transparency – or is it just a transparent empty suit???
