The White House Department of White Coats; Update: DFA supplied the coats?

posted at 10:12 am on October 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Why was the New York Post the only major media organization to report this?

President Obama yesterday rolled out the red carpet — and handed out doctors’ white coats as well, just so nobody missed his hard-sell health-care message.

In a heavy-handed attempt at reviving support for health-care reform, the White House orchestrated a massive photo op to buttress its claim that front-line physicians support Obama. …

The physicians, all invited guests, were told to bring their white lab coats to make sure that TV cameras captured the image.

But some docs apparently forgot, failing to meet the White House dress code by showing up in business suits or dresses.

So the White House rustled up white coats for them and handed them to the suited physicians who had taken seats in the sun-splashed lawn area.

When did the White House add a Wardrobe Czar to the administration?  Does this position have Congressional oversight, or did the Obama administration outsource that to Cintas?

Patterico notes that wardrobe malfunctions weren’t the only problem with that staged photo op:

“Dr. Eric Novack was one of the 50 doctors invited to the White House photo op today. But he turned down the invitation, because he has lead the fight to pass state legislation and constitutional amendments to prohibit individual insurance mandates.

“They had 16 hours to Google me, but I guess no one bothered,” Dr. Novack told Kathryn Serkes, Director of Policy and Public Affairs for the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) in a video interview available at www.TakeBackMedicine.com.

Dr. Novack says that it was very tempting to accept the “once-in-a-lifetime” invitation, but in the end, he had to say no. But it also makes him question whether the doctors who will be there today actually support the President, or even understand all of the details of the bills.

“Are these doctors just star-struck, or do they have real knowledge about what they are supporting?” asked Serkes. “It’s looking like another dog-and-pony-show, and doctors should not be used in this shameful manner. First the President vilifies them, now he wants their help.”

“And at the very least, it makes the White House look like it does some very sloppy work,” added Serkes.”

Well, they didn’t exactly worry about that sloppy work when they started passing out uniforms to physicians in the Rose Garden. They probably figured that the mainstream media would turn a blind eye to the clumsy staging, and for the most part, they were right.

Update: If you’re interested in putting a stop to these masquerade parties, go to Patients First and their National Call Congress Day website.

Update II: My friend Tommy Christopher reports that the White House says that Doctors for America, the pro-reform group that arranged for the doctors, handed out the white lab coats and not the White House.  That makes a little more sense — after all, I doubt that the White House had a stash of lab coats hanging in the Lincoln Bedroom closet — but who told DFA to outfit the doctors with lab coats?  I sincerely doubt that the White House left that detail to DFA’s judgment.

I’m listening to Laura Ingraham interview a doctor who was there that is insisting that everyone brought their own embroidered coats. Hahahah! What a tool!

Blake on October 6, 2009 at 1:39 PM

Personally, I think that a doctor that would go there and put on a white coat for a photo op is silly.

Blake on October 6, 2009 at 1:42 PM

Wow, this lady doc is lying her ass off. She says medicare is superior to private insurance and covers more and all doctors take it.

She refuses to respond to questions and just goes off on a rant. Bet she’s a commie. Yes, there are commie doctors.

Good takedown. I get so tired of liberals playing word games. It should be obvious that saying “Mission Accomplished” is not the same thing as saying, “War Over.” It’s much more like saying, “Battle over.”

The same people that play up “Mission Accomplished” as if it were wrong will completely ignore Bush’s plain statement that he was declaring the end to “major combat operations,” and his plain warning that the whole War on Terror would be carried out over many years and across many battlefields, and that sometimes the greatest accomplishments would never even be seen by the public.

Whenever any ship, whether it’s an aircraft carrier or a Coast Guard buoy tender, returns from a deployment, it typically displays a “mission accomplished” banner.

BTW I want to make a correction. Draft dodger Bill Clintoon did not stage 4 photo ops on aircraft carriers. He staged 5 of them.

Carrier Carl Vinson (1993; 1995)
Carrier George Washington (1994)
Carrier Independence (1996)
Carrier Harry S. Truman (1998)

And he staged another photo op on a Navy ship:

Guided Missile Cruiser (AEGIS) Hue City (2000)

As I recall he created a ruckus when he ordered that the US flag be flown underneath the Vietnamese flag.

BTW, the evil Richard Nixon only staged one carrier photo-op, in 1969. He had a good excuse, as he was there to welcome home the first men to land on the moon.

And, while Bush deserves credit for keeping us safe after that one time, nothing in Iraq had anything to do with it. I wouldn’t start giving history lectures if I were you.
Bleeds Blue on October 6, 2009 at 11:38 AM

You are unqualified to even type that sentence. History is something you have to study, they must not have taught you those skills in your 8th grade class yet.
We have been attacked since 1979. Then Bush took the war to Iraq, and POOF–the attacks magically stopped.

America’s war on terrorism did not begin in September 2001. It began in November 1979.

That was shortly after Ayatollah Khomeini had seized power in Iran, riding the slogan “Death to America” – and sure enough, the attacks on Americans soon began. In November 1979, a militant Islamic mob took over the U.S. embassy in Tehran, the Iranian capital, and held 52 Americans hostage for the next 444 days.

The rescue team sent to free those hostages in April 1980 suffered eight fatalities, making them the first of militant Islam’s many American casualties. Others included:

April 1983: 17 dead at the U.S. embassy in Beirut.

October 1983: 241 dead at the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut.

December 1983: five dead at the U.S. embassy in Kuwait.

January 1984: the president of the American University of Beirut killed.

April 1984: 18 dead near a U.S. airbase in Spain.

September 1984: 16 dead at the U.S. embassy in Beirut (again).

December 1984: Two dead on a plane hijacked to Tehran.

June 1985: One dead on a plane hijacked to Beirut.

After a let-up, the attacks then restarted: Five and 19 dead in Saudi Arabia in 1995 and 1996, 224 dead at the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in August 1998 and 17 dead on the USS Cole in Yemen in October 2000.

Simultaneously, the murderous assault of militant Islam also took place on U.S. soil:

July 1980: an Iranian dissident killed in the Washington, D.C. area.

August 1983: a leader of the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam killed in Canton, Mich.

August 1984: three Indians killed in a suburb of Tacoma, Wash.

September 1986: a doctor killed in Augusta, Ga.

January 1990: an Egyptian freethinker killed in Tucson, Ariz.

November 1990: a Jewish leader killed in New York.

February 1991: an Egyptian Islamist killed in New York.

January 1993: two CIA staff killed outside agency headquarters in Langley, Va.

February 1993: Six people killed at the World Trade Center.

March 1994: an Orthodox Jewish boy killed on the Brooklyn Bridge.

February 1997: a Danish tourist killed on the Empire State building.

October 1999: 217 passengers killed on an EgyptAir flight near New York City.

while Bush deserves credit for keeping us safe after that one time, nothing in Iraq had anything to do with it.

Many terrorists found safe haven in Iraq. Americans may have already forgotten that soon after the United States removed Saddam, a Boeing 707 was found at a deserted terrorist training camp in Salman Pak, Iraq, miles from any airport, where terrorists practiced hijackings. In addition, Saddam routinely feted terrorists and openly rewarded families of suicide bombers that killed Jews in Israel.
I won’t argue about the right or wrong of the Iraq War–which I support, and still do History is simply an understanding of the facts and events, something you are unable to grasp.
Don’t let your 8th grade computer lab teacher catch you using the internet…

This episode reminds me of my past experience as an English teacher asked by the principal to cover a chemistry class while its instructor attended a meeting. As a first order of business before the students orally reviewed their assignment, I donned the chem teacher’s white lab coat with tongue in cheek to assure them of my credibility. Wow, I felt “doctorish” and the students had a good laugh. So did I.

Actually as I understand it the plane was not a 707, but a TU-154. But it was a commercial aircraft. Interestingly enough the TU-154 seating configuration is very similar to the Boeing 757.

Also when your looking for, or IF your looking who linked AQ to Iraq ya can’t forget AG Reno and Terror Czar Clark in a Senate hearing February 6, 1999.

“Saddam Hussein’s regime has opened talks with Osama bin Laden, bringing closer the threat of a terrorist attack using chemical, biological or nuclear weapons, according to US intelligence sources and Iraqi opposition officials. (Terror Czar Clark)

The key meeting took place in the Afghan mountains near Kandahar in late December. The Iraqi delegation was led by Farouk Hijazi, Baghdad’s ambassador in Turkey and one of Saddam’s most powerful secret policemen, who is thought to have offered Bin Laden asylum in Iraq.

News of the negotiations emerged in a week when the US attorney general, Janet Reno, warned the Senate that a terrorist attack involving weapons of mass destruction was a growing concern. “There’s a threat, and it’s real,” Ms Reno said, adding that such weapons “are being considered for use.”

I have researched 7 of the “doctors”. Of the 7 I researched, all had democrat political ties–either working with “community organizing” groups or donating large sums to democrats including Obama. None of the 7 were in private practice but either worked for a university or a left wing group of some kind. They were all diverse.

That meeting in the mountains was the one ABC News’ Sheila McVicar also reported on. And by the time Reno testified to Congress, her Justice Dept. had already tied bin Laden to Iraq in its 1998 indictment of him.

But this is all a waste of time to explain to vacant Leftists, as on their 3-ringed world recorded history didn’t begin until January of 2001. Nothing that took place between Iraq and al Qaeda before that time actually happened. And the 9/11 attacks were all conceived, planned and trained for in the 8 months after Chimpy took office.

And these clowns aren’t interested in the truth about Iraq and al Qaeda anyway, because they would rather be waterboarded than admit an illegtimate President did the right thing.

Dr. Charles G. Waugh on October 7, 2009 at 11:14 AM

Let us not forget the White House is polluted with Hollywood types anyway wanting to work for the big zero – they live in a world of make-believe. So the prop shop where the faux columns for the convention came from probably has a wardrobe shop to provide white lab coats. This administration is a sham from the get-go.

mozalf on October 7, 2009 at 12:05 PM

When I first saw the photo of all the doctors sitting there in their white lab coats I knew it had to be a phony set-up for a photo-op. No doctor would attend something like this wearing their lab coat. We only wear them in a clinical setting and it would be ridiculous and pompous to wear them to a social event. If you’re going to go that far, why not wear a stethoscope and a head mirror like you always see in cartoons.
