Pelosi: Hey, how about a VAT to help pay for ObamaCare?

posted at 4:58 pm on October 6, 2009 by Allahpundit

In case you were wondering how they’re going to make the program, ahem, “deficit-neutral,” wonder no longer.

“I would say, Put everything on the table and subject it to the scrutiny that it deserves,” Pelosi told Rose when asked if the VAT has any appeal to her…

Pelosi argued that the VAT would level the playing field between U.S. and foreign manufacturers, the latter of which do not have pension and healthcare costs included in the price of their goods because their governments provide those services, financed by similar taxes.

“They get a tax off of that and they use that money to pay the healthcare for their own workers,” Pelosi said, using the example of auto manufacturers. “So their cars coming into our country don’t have a healthcare component cost.

“Somewhere along the way, a value-added tax plays into this. Of course, we want to take down the healthcare cost, that’s one part of it,” the Speaker added. “But in the scheme of things, I think it’s fair look at a value- added tax as well.”

Ace already made the point I wanted to make. If you take her logic seriously, which is usually a bad idea, the only way to fully level the playing field and eliminate health-insurance costs from the price of U.S. goods is to … eliminate private health insurance. Anything short of that and you’re left with some health-care cost component, however small, built into the price of the good, with a VAT slapped on top to boot. Competitive pressure among companies to outprice each other will take care of the rest, leading them to drop private insurance coverage altogether and leave employees scrambling to enroll in the public option. In which case, there’s no need to legislate single-payer; ironically, the market will lead you there.

There’s another, simpler way to reduce the price disadvantage U.S. companies face, but that would require less government revenue, not more, and therefore is dead on arrival for Madam Speaker. Exit question: Is the VAT politically feasible? Rasmussen’s out with a new poll that finds 59 percent support for adding a provision to ObamaCare that would prohibit any new taxes, fees, or penalties on families who make less than $250,000 a year. The VAT, which operates basically as a sales tax, would drop like an atomic bomb on that sentiment. How will the Democrats sell it, especially with the GOP poised to make big gains next year? Does anyone seriously believe Pelosi’s going to gamble a narrow Democratic majority in the House on a new consumption tax?

Good grief, this woman is stuck on STUPID.

You know that old saying: You can’t fix stupid.

(I should have been more accurate and said that “even a few of the Dim voters” might start to catch on).

AZCoyote on October 6, 2009 at 5:54 PM

This woman is clearly retarded. The point about the need for single payer to make this work asside, even single payer doesn’t make it work. Companies either pay money to health insurance plans in the form of premiums, or they pay it to the government in the form of a tax. Granny Rictus McBotoxImplants may be assuming there will at least be some cost savings through single payer (government!) efficiencies (OK, get up from the floor, I’m not quite finished, but this in no way removes the cost of healthcare from US goods and services.

A great primer on history of VAT, GATT, WTO, etc., and how the US is shooting itself in the foot versus all other countries with a VAT.

Nice to not have a VAT tax, but we have to change the GATT exemption of the VAT that 130+ other countries use to our disadvantage.

Ever since France got a VAT exemption in GATT, 130+ countries have used that loophole, but not us.

fred5678 on October 6, 2009 at 5:58 PM

Hmmm, massive recession and high unemployment. What sounds like a good idea? Oh a tax hike, of course. On all goods.

They really are socialists. The problem with socialism as Margaret Thatcher said is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.

I knew this was coming. Now we will be just like Europe. Down the competitive rathole.

Obama will veto it. He promised no tax increases for the middle class, right

forest on October 6, 2009 at 6:05 PM

Just to correct your language.

VAT is NOT a consumption tax.

VAT IS a production tax.

Sapwolf on October 6, 2009 at 6:09 PM

This is a great idea, implement a consumption based national VAT. I’m thinking around 10-15% on all goods and services. This should fund everything. No more Social Security, Medicare, Income, Capital Gains…. Woo-hoo, talk about stimulating the economy!

Never mind, just woke up from a day dream…

Obama planned to borrow dollars from China for Health Insurance for all so we wooouldn’t have to PAY for it.

C’mon, folks…Don’t y’all know that it’s “Patriotic to pay taxes”??? Joe & his buddies said so. And, therefore, it’s unpatriotic to oppose this idiot’s VAT proposal – or anything else Dear Leader & Co., come up with tomorrow!

You are ALL unpatriotic!

I’m telling.

GoldenEagle4444 on October 6, 2009 at 6:20 PM

I’m trying to find the rule or law that allows the certifiably insane to continue to govern on a national level. Anyone?

HAnthonyWayne on October 6, 2009 at 6:22 PM

Is insanity a qualification to belong to the Democrat party? We have to throw these robbers out of office before the steal the entire wealth of the country.

BottomLine5 on October 6, 2009 at 6:27 PM

Is there no tax these ass hats aren’t for? You really have to love the logic here. According to Pelosi, since so many other countries screw their citizens with a VAT, we should get in on the action and start screwing our citizens too.

Man, 2010 can’t get here soon enough. One way or another, these folks have got to go. I sure hope the third party clowns get a clue between now and then, or we are TOTALLY fubar.

xblade on October 6, 2009 at 6:28 PM

VAT is a good idea if it means lower income tax. In principle it’s the same as the “fair tax” beloved by conservatives except it’s not collected at the point of purchase. The current arrangement, where half the people don’t pay any federal taxes, is ridiculous.

year_of_the_dingo on October 6, 2009 at 6:30 PM

Wrong. The price of every thing you buy will go through the roof. The vat is the reason that everything in Europe is so expensive. Everything is taxed at every level that it is sold, from the manufacturer, from the distributor, the jobber and from the retailer. You pay a tax on the tax and if you think that the pols will just forget about income tax, then I have got a bridge to sell…..

100% correct.

If you want to try this out, go live in Europe. It is an eye-opening experience.

Anders on October 6, 2009 at 6:57 PM

At least in Europe they have the decency to call themselves Socialists.

uknowmorethanme on October 6, 2009 at 7:01 PM

it was just yesterday that Dick Morris said the whole point of the EuroSocialists in this country was to bring down the level of the US to the EU. This is because the EU has been hamstrung by people/businesses leaving Europe to friendlier shores. Solution: make other counries (the US) as bad (or worse) for business than the EU so that they have nowhere to go.

So now I finally understand the “why” behind the Soros game. He likes Europe and European Hegemony. Solution: bring down the US.

Nancy agrees:

Pelosi argued that the VAT would level the playing field between U.S. and foreign manufacturers, the latter of which do not have pension and healthcare costs included in the price of their goods because their governments provide those services, financed by similar taxes.

Oh come on – you know the dems will not give up any kind of current tax. The VAT will be in ADDITION to the income tax! And on top of this, congress will add the health insurance tax and as many other taxes as they can dream up.

WAKE UP PEOPLE. Congress will not be happy until everything you have is given by them. Be sure to ask you senators and representatives if they will be receiving the same health care you will.

jackal40 on October 6, 2009 at 9:10 PM

How about a VAT to replace the income tax?

More what I have in mind.

What’s next, a tax on windows? They don’t dare do tea nor document stamps.
