Global warming alert!

posted at 6:10 pm on October 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Over the last two weeks, the weather has turned rapidly in Minnesota from one of the mildest summers on recent record to a cold and blustery fall.  We’ve been griping about it, but maybe we should have counted our blessings.  I just took a look at the five-day forecast for the Twin Cities and found this:

Snow on October 9th?  That’s less than three weeks into autumn.  Last year, we didn’t get snow until the weekend before Halloween.  Looks like a long winter of global warming coming our way this year….

Blowback

But Ed, you just don’t understand TEH SCIENCE. You see, global warming CAUSES colder winters. Don’t question it.

It’s the same here in good ol’ Montana. We should be getting a metric crapload of snow tomorrow.

(Yeah, them’s Fahrenheit degrees — so call it 5, for the science crowd….)

Don’t you racist right wing nuts understand that global warming, not to mention racism, also causes unseasonable cooling?

Haven’t you heard…”global warming” is so 2008…all that early snow is proof that man is destroying the planet or something…just like the fake hockey stick graph proved it…the fact that we exist at all is proof that we are destroying the planet, as a matter of fact.

AUINSC on October 6, 2009 at 6:17 PM

That isn’t snow you see, that’s evidence of “global warming.”

Suspend all your disbelief, pay your tithe to the church of climate change, kneel before the minister of the church–Al Gore. Deliver your tithe to that church and minister in your new green prius and if you speaketh or thinketh of any moreth of thith sthkeptithism, then you sthall be banisthed and excommunicated from the human populathion.

There thall be a church bake thale this weekend and a paint drive to purchathe more white paint to paint the roofs of the poor to protect against thith further travesty.

kneel before zod.

We got snow in Wyoming! The leaves haven’t even turned colors yet. They are still green. I guess they thought we were in global warming mode too.

VibrioCocci on October 6, 2009 at 6:19 PM

Well, what all those “global warming” suckers call “climate change”, we just refer to as either “seasons”, or alternatively “the weather” around these parts.

Al Gore and his ilk still can’t explain what happened to that 4000 foot thick sheet of ice that covered Yellowstone Park (3500 square miles!) a mere 20,000 years ago (the blink of an eye in geological terms). Mastadon flatulence?

I live in San Diego and people noticed the slip in temperatures. I slept with my window open all summer then one day I woke up shivering at 3AM. Don’t get me wrong but it is still San Diego but the light jackets usually do not come out until Novenber if at all.

Theworldisnotenough on October 6, 2009 at 6:23 PM

But Ed, you have to see that there wouldn’t be enough airborne water to make all that snow if the ice caps hadn’t been melting due to global warning.

Don’t you realize, you can’t look at weather or temperature patterns? Not even if you take the entire northern hemisphere into consideration.

Only cum-poot-eerr models can determine whether or not global warming is real.

You see, cum-poot-eerrs are mystical devices from which the fountain of truth springs. No mere mortal can possibly fathom the complex intricate goodness in such a device’s creamy center.

It’s magic and the magic device says there is global warming. Debate over.

smrtas1 on October 6, 2009 at 6:31 PM

While we all know weather is something different than climate, that people who don’t have and government’s greedy, cynical interests still believe the fairy tale of anthropogenic global warming continues to amaze me. You really can fool some of the people all of the time, even as they’re shoveling all evidence to the contrary off their driveways.

It’s snowing in October. Therefore, global warming is a myth.

YYZ on October 6, 2009 at 6:46 PM

I attribute this to a phenomenon I called Global Lukewarming.

Temperatures rise, temperatures fall, years are long, and the earth is a damn big place. As such, of course we’re going to run into the occasional “unseasonable weather” or even record setting climate conditions now and then.

Average it all out, and what do you get? The same damn thing year after year. We get a nice, average, moderate…lukewarm, if you will..set of climate conditions.

The hot and the cold effectively cancel each other out, no matter how many record breaking hot/cold temperatures we encounter. Too bad the idiocy of global cooling isn’t vast enough to cancel out the idiocy of global warming.

ynot4tony2 on October 6, 2009 at 6:47 PM

I remember hoping back in the 70′s, when I was in high school and everyone was going on about the “Future Man-Made Ice Age”, that they were wrong. I hoped that if I lived to see the 20th century, we wouldn’t have billions of people dying from famine, that every animal wouldn’t be extinct, the skies wouldn’t be black with soot, the rivers wouldn’t be flowing with radioactive waste, and I wouldn’t have to cross a glacier to get to work.

It looks like they got lucky on predicting the glacier part.

People on both sides make their cases sound stupid when they cite specific weather instances like this. People should stick to the scientific debate if they want to be taken seriously.

The real reason the hockey stick curve is dead is that it’s finally been proven that the curve is due to the presence of one specific tree in the data set. Its tree ring growth was such an outlier that it distorted the whole result. And a lot of more reasonable trees were excluded. Talk about cherry-picking your data to get predicted results!

Anyway, if you’re not living near that tree, you’ll get a cold winter.

As someone who’s endured enough of the scientific method to kill a normal man, I see where you’re coming from…but I think you’re either missing or glossing over the point.

How many true believers of global warming do you know that point out record warm days as evidence (or worse yet, “proof”) that global warming is indeed a fact of life? I would guess, “most of them.”

I’m not speaking for others, but when I point to unseasonably cold weather, it’s not to say, “See, global warming is a myth,” but more to say, “See, your evidence is meaningless.”

Then again, too many true believers honestly believe they can physically notice the weather getting warmer. Sure…humans can’t detect the rise of 10 degrees over the matter of a few hours…but somehow these geniuses are so in tune with the temperature that they can notice a change of 1/50 of a degree in a year, in spite of all the up and down temperatures that come in between.

What I was told by the old timers around here is that if you have a cold winter (2009) and the Atlantic stays cold you have a cold, wet June (2009) followed by a mild, short summer and a New England hurricane or two.

I don’t recognize any science in there but I trust the 80+year olds to recognize weather patterns – just like I know that every 6 or 7 years, it will snow on or around my birthday. I’ve trick or treated in a snow storm.
