Friendly reminder from ACORN chief Bertha Lewis: You’re racist
posted at 7:32 pm on October 6, 2009 by Allahpundit
Unless you’re cool with, say, covering up the embezzlement of $5 million. Then you’re okay.
Saith the woman heralded by RNC chair Michael Steele as doing a “phenomenal job” in handling the scandal:
“For many years, there’ve been folks who’ve disagreed with our ideology or methodology that [have] gone after us,” Mrs. Lewis, ACORN’s chief executive officer, said in a speech at the National Press Club in Washington.
“I mean we, [going back] to 2004, we now see through e-mails from Karl Rove from the previous administration that ACORN itself was targeted, targeted to go after us so that we would stop doing voter registration because it was said that we were moving too many minorities to vote, changing the power dynamics on the local election and that we needed to be stopped.”
She also labeled as racist the infamous videos that show ACORN workers advising a man and young woman posing as pimp and prostitute how to circumvent the law. “These new filmmakers, [James] O’Keefe himself, told The Washington Post, ‘They’re registering too many minorities; they usually vote Democratic; somebody’s got to stop them,’” Mrs. Lewis said.
That’s not the first time she’s smeared O’Keefe as a racist, but in this case she’s only repeating the lie WaPo told her. Remember this from last month, when WaPo dropped the following on its readers?
Though O’Keefe described himself as a progressive radical, not a conservative, he said he targeted ACORN for the same reasons that the political right does: its massive voter registration drives that turn out poor African Americans and Latinos against Republicans.
“Politicians are getting elected single-handedly due to this organization,” he said. “No one was holding this organization accountable. No one in the media is putting pressure on them. We wanted to do a stunt and see what we could find.”
Only days later, after righty bloggers had had a well-justified conniption over it, did the following correction appear:
This article about the community organizing group ACORN incorrectly said that a conservative journalist targeted the organization for hidden-camera videos partly because its voter-registration drives bring Latinos and African Americans to the polls. Although ACORN registers people mostly from those groups, the maker of the videos, James E. O’Keefe, did not specifically mention them.
Don’t think of the original piece as a smear; think of it as WaPo “helping” its readers see O’Keefe for the racist he surely must be. As for Lewis, the more phony, politically calculated charges of prejudice fly from the mouths of discredited leftist apparatchiks, the more devalued the currency is. Keep it up. With any luck, Polanski will start accusing his critics of being anti-Polish or something.

The newly registered voters named Speedy Gonzalez and Mickey Mouse believe that OKeefe is a racist. I know its true because Lewis said so.

Bertha was an “actress”….per the NYT in 2001 (obviously not a good one.
“I decided I would be a great actress so people would listen to me express my politics through art.”

Note, when she’s calling people racists she’s seeing her reflection somewhere and it just pops out, she can’t help it. She’s a racist and she’s simply acknowledging that fact.
The freak’s got issues.

Note to black folks; if you really want to reduce the sterotypes and racial predcudices, eleminate those stupid refrences to monkey’s and apes, you gotta get this woman off the TV screens. She is a one person wrecking crew for any hope you have of convincing white folks that we are all alike.
MikeA on October 7, 2009 at 7:50 AM
I used to think that blacks really wanted to do this, but am beginning to see that many do not. They like their self proclaimed ‘victim’ status. It provides a ready excuse and a useful premise that allows many(certainly not all) to do as they please–especially to each other. It also allows the use those blacks who will not or cannot think for themselves as ready followers no matter how damaging the cause. This will certainly be called ‘racist’ thinking by those indicted above. So be it, I cannot change that. But, in truth, I personally would welcome a day when I do not have to look at skin color first and everything else second. If that’s racist, then I guess I’m guilty.

Ah well, I defended Steel’s comment that she was doing a good job. Her initial stance on ACORN’s expose was solid.
This is just the same ole’ junky race card that we all expected. Won’t work.

Yes I am a racist because I do not tolerate a person (no matter the color of their pigment)who lies, cheats, or steals the worth of another for their own personal gain.
As a matter of fact I live by a creed that many cannot comprehend because they do not listen or read the words carefully.
“I hate everyone, until I get to know them”.
The responsibility to convince me you are worthy of a continuing relationship is up to you, not because someones ideals say that I must allow you into my circle. My life is easier because I am the one who determines the amount of time I allow you to convince me. The longer I listen to you the better chance we have of becoming friends.
When those who believe I must do something because a fictitious group of people say I must, hear my statement they are so caught up with themselves or their programming they only hear one word in the whole thought – hate.
From that point on nothing else matters in their mind so from that point on they begin berating me and try to change me, so it is at that point the relationship ends and I can get on with doing something good for someone or group that deserves my effort.

Does she shave her head? I confess to being prejudiced against women who shave their heads…
Pilgrimsarbour on October 7, 2009 at 12:48 PM
She admits to tax fraud in this comment. ACORN is registered as a 501(c)(3) non-partisan, tax exempt organization.
MoCoM on October 7, 2009 at 1:13 PM
I do not agree with ACORN tactics or tenets. I applaud the invetigative reporting that have peeled back their ugly underbelly for all to see. But I see no reason to hold the CEO of an obviously corrupt organization as some archetypal depiction of Blacks in America.
It is not the responsibility of “black folks” to reduce prejudice. The suggestion thereof is misleading and dangerous. I am black; this woman does not speak on my behalf at all. Yet I can be offended by simian-taunts and racial-insults too. Being conservative does not blind me to reality. It simply arms me with a different perspective with which to deal with it. It is unfair to burden all blacks with the weight of your anger against one woman particular.
I suspect is that your political frustrations have given way to a burgeoning personal, racial-angst. Maybe you have never considered yourself one to have any racial hangups, but now find yourself confronted with alarming, base racial reactions.
Who knows? I cannot account for your personal feelings. I hope you work that frustration out. But I do not have to be stand by silently while you pass the buck on standing firm against bigotry.
You have invested in an us-vs-them mentality. You charge me with the responsibility of convincing “white folks that we are all alike.” You get to sit back and allude to monkey jokes, allude to ape jokes and avoid the stain of the bigoted tone which you have so poorly veiled.
The Race Card on October 7, 2009 at 2:42 PM
Here’s the problem. ACORN falsely claims to represent and speak for a large segment of the black community. Unless someone disputes that in a meaningful way, a lot of people will accept that claim at face value.
And when WaPo and ACORN fabricate and attribute racist motivations to critics as they did with O’Keefe, that just reinforces that notion.
In other words, ACORN and groups like it are reinforcing the racial stereotypes they say they are fighting against. And they want it that way. It’s how they stay in business.
