CBS flunks research and journalism

posted at 9:30 am on October 6, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

How difficult is it to click on a link and check a quote?  Apparently too difficult for CBS News, which criticizes conservative bloggers, including me, for pointing out a rather large discrepancy in two stories told by the Obamas about their daughter Sasha as a means to push ObamaCare.  In a piece they call “Taking Liberties,” CBS “fact checks” our comparison of the two stories:

A conservative blogger concluded: “Today Mrs. Obama says (Sasha) was four months old but fortunately did not have meningitis. Yet just eight days ago her husband said she was three months old and was diagnosed with meningitis.” One blog used the opportunity to reprint the Obama-as-Joker photo, HotAir.com called it “serious incompetence” on the Obamas’ part, it appeared on Breitbart.tv, and the crowd over at FreeRepublic.com dubbed the president a “chronic liar.”

There’s just one problem with this nice little gotcha story. There’s no evidence that either Obama lied.

There’s just one problem with CBS’ reporting.  They never address the New York Times report that said this:

In her speech, Mrs. Obama also told the story of how her daughter Sasha would not stop crying when she was 4 months old. A doctor’s visit revealed she might have meningitis; she ultimately did not, but the illness produced a scare.

Now, I didn’t go to J-school or anything, but if Sasha didn’t have meningitis and Barack Obama claimed she did, that would be untrue, wouldn’t it?  Mrs. Obama told the story with a little more care, never claiming that Sasha had meningitis, and Jeff Zeleny apparently checked it out a little more carefully than CBS did.  Or, if McCullaghhas a problem with Zeleny’s reporting, he should have checked that out rather than attack people for relying on it.

Jammie Wearing Fool lays it out succinctly:

So all we did was point out the obvious: Barack Obama claimed his daughter was diagnosed with meningitis at three months old, while the NY Times report says she was four months old and did not have meningitis. Oh, but we’re supposed to be the ones factually challenged, according to CBS News. That’s CBS News, of all places. You remember them: It’s fake, but accurate.

Maybe if Declan Mccullagh wants to do his homework he ought to call the reporter at the New York Times instead of taking a cheapshot at conservative blogs for something we pointed out three weeks ago. Better yet, maybe Mccullagh and the rest of the “mainstream” media should have noticed the obvious differences in their stories last month when the rest of us pointed this out. But no, they can’t do that. Instead they have to take a swipe at the folks doing the work the media refuses to do.

Normally, McCullagh does better work than this, but this is just embarrassing.  We specifically included the New York Times link in our blog posts and quoted Zeleny.  McCullagh assumes Zeleny’s wrong without any independent reporting to show it, just to blame bloggers for using his reporting as the basis of our posts.  I’d say this effort should win McCullagh the Mary Mapes Award at CBS.

Next time, read the whole post and click the links, Tiffany Network.  And if you don’t like the source material, show that it’s wrong.

Update: And let’s remember the context of these posts.  Barack Obama has told a string of tall tales himself in public to push health-care reform.  What does CBS do in response?  Go after Obama’s critics.  Yeah, that’s telling truth to power, all right.

Update II: Cleaned up the argument in the final paragraph a bit.

Update III: In my post, I said that McCullagh “never addresses” the New York Times piece, which is sloppy and inaccurate.  He did address it, just long enough to note that we relied on it for our posts, and then ignores its implications, which is that we had a good reason to point out the differences in the two stories and to conclude that President Obama exaggerated the tale for effect.  I apologize to Declan for not being clearer on that point, but Declan needs to either prove Zeleny wrong or admit that we were right — and that we relied on Zeleny’s reporting in good faith in the first place.

LOL!
Nice point.
I shuddder to think what Blake remembers about his own kids.

Badger40 on October 6, 2009 at 10:20 AM

Let me say one more time: If they think the kid has meningitis they treat it as if it did have meningitis because it is so deadly. It’s easy for parents to get confused.

Blake on October 6, 2009 at 10:07 AM

Not really. They may not know at the time but, after the fact, they’d be able to state whether the child had meningitis or not. The fact of the matter is that Obama doesn’t know.

highhopes on October 6, 2009 at 10:20 AM

“Honey, I don’t remember… did Johnny have inoperable brain cancer or not? Gosh, it’s just so hard to remember which life-threatening diseases the kids had or didn’t have.”

mankai on October 6, 2009 at 10:18 AM

LOL! Thanks mankai — I need that.

zenscreamer on October 6, 2009 at 10:20 AM

The Obamas thought that Sasha has meningitis. Why? Because a doctor said she might. Whether a doctor saying that your daughter might have meningitis is a “diagnosis” or not is an argument too stupid even for the type of people who spend their days hunting for Kenyan birth certificates.

Bleeds Blue on October 6, 2009 at 9:42 AM

Ummm. The guy is elected POTUS, and you believe that he can’t tell the difference, after the fact mind you, between a diagnosis of possible meningitis and a positive diagnosis of meningitis?

If you’re right, this goes a long way towards explaining the President’s take on tonsillectomies and amputation of limbs for elderly diabetics.

applebutter on October 6, 2009 at 10:21 AM

No, it doesn’t. For the most part, people are piss poor historians of their own and their child’s medical histories.

Blake on October 6, 2009 at 10:14 AM

Really?

But I was told Barack Obama was the most brilliant individual who ever lived.

So brilliant is Obama, that it didn’t matter that he had no executive experience. Didn’t matter that he never held anything resembling a real job in his life.

Barack is “brilliant” we constantly told.

So I must be even brilliant-er, because I can recall basic facts about my medical history and that of my child.

So you’ll admit Obama is of average intelligence?

Because that explains his “performance” in office thus far.

He’s been promoted WAY above his abilities.

Seriously, my mom had 5 kids within 6 years and she can tell you about all of our various illnesses, hospital visits, etc. Of course, she didn’t go to Harvard, but a concerned parent remembers these things.

The point is (and it’s been proven) that the Prez or First Lady will lie (whether big or small) to push their agenda, and the media continues to cover up for them.

Doctors ALWAYS give worst-case-scenario… that’s why they test for everything possible. But when the tests come back and you KNOW what it is (or isn’t) you don’t go through the rest of your life thinking it was something it wasn’t.

“Three years ago a doctor looked at my freckles and told me I might have skin cancer. The performed a biopsy and it came back negative. Remind me, did I have skin cancer or not? This medical stuff is so confusing!”

Well, I think it’s just a matter of speaking in public and a minor mistake.

I really am not keen about gotcha blog stories. You can nail every single politician for exactly the same type of gaffes. They are always used to send the message that the person is “stupid” or a “liar.” Usually, it’s just a minor mistake.

But then, I’m fed up with all the divisiness. I think when it gets to this point, the attacking side starts to lose credibility.

AnninCA on October 6, 2009 at 10:27 AM

My brother, when he was younger, had an infection that caused problems with his lymph nodes. They thought it might be cancer, but thankfully it wasn’t. I really don’t recall anyone in my family that has been going around the last 20 years telling everyone my brother had cancer.

MDWNJ on October 6, 2009 at 10:27 AM

There’s just one problem with CBS’ reporting. They never address the New York Times report that said this:

Ed, the CBS report directly addresses this. Maybe I’m missing something.

The CBS report notes this Times quote, and then shows that it is not based on anything, citing a transcript AND VIDEO of Michelle Obama’s remarks that do not make the no-meningitis claim.

Can you explain why you stand by the Times quote even though the transcript and video do not corroborate it?

Liberals are results-oriented. Getting from Point A (the current situation) to Point B (what libs want) is all that matters. If they have to lie, obfuscate, distort facts, ignore details, and make baseless accusations, then all is fair and ‘honest’. Even lies, in their eyes, are acceptable long as the outcome has their sense of ‘nobility’.

For the good of the children, of course.

If the Times’ report had been accurate, one of the Obamas would have been guilty of a lie, or at least a crass political exaggeration. But a copy of Michelle Obama’s remarks on WhiteHouse.gov (here’s a video) show she never made the no-meningitis claim:

I”m going to a lot of doctors right now, and every time I see a new one I fill out a whole slew of forms asking me questions about my medical history…. If I’m not a reliable source of information, why ask me?

Am I supposed to believe that because I “think” my children have never had a life-threatening disease I might be wrong? Because I’m not a reliable source of information?

Or does Blake only think that parents are a source of “false positive” data — “I thought my child had a burst appendix, but now that I look at the doctor’s records, it was only a stomach ache”?

zenscreamer on October 6, 2009 at 10:37 AM

My sister died of meningitis when she was six months old. It is a difficult disease to detect in an infant and it is often too late once the doctors know what they are dealing with. Worrying that someone has meningitis is one thing, since as a father of four it always was a fear when my kids ran a fever. Them not having meningitis is of course is such a far cry from if they actually did, much like confusing the fact that one did or did not have brain cancer, or drowned. B.O. isn’t just a liar, he’s a bad one. To use your child like that and tempt fate is despicable.

How is a parent supposed to remember all that stuff? Does she wear glasses? I guess so. We took her to an eye doctor and was tested, so I suppose she could be wearing glasses or contacts. Why ask us, we’re only her parents?”

What a joke…

CambellBrown on October 6, 2009 at 10:41 AM

Someone should probably address the fact that the CBS report DID address what Ed says it didn’t.

In summary:
1. Ed and others rely on Times quote to show that Obamas contradicted each other
2. CBS specifically points out that the Times quote is uncorroborated, citing the transcript and video of Michelle Obama’s remarks
3. Ed claims that CBS didn’t address the Times quote, even though it did

I worked at a Gifted School where the children only came one day a week. One day a young dad came in to pick up his daughter for an appointment. “What room is your daughter in?” *crickets* Not a biggie. “What is the teacher’s name?” *crickets* Again, one day a week, it really isn’t a huge deal. “What grade is your daughter in?” *Really embarassed crickets* Obviously we were able to find the little girl by her name and his id information was on file and it wasn’t meant to be a test but it’s amazing what parent’s don’t remember. I am sure the possible diagnosis was traumatic for the Obamas and a screaming infant is terrifying but the story itself was not illustrative of lack of health insurance but instead what great health care and how quickly the Obama’s fears were eased. And it would have happened the same way most anywhere in the U.S.

This isn’t petty, this is a person who is responsible for leading our country…they are their to be judged, and judged harshly.
Do you want our enemies to know that he exaggerates to make a point? Do you want our “friends” not to trust his words?
You don’t get it…Putin sees his exaggeration and analyzes that Obama wants “sympathy”, he is wants verbal gratification, so Putin gives him that, and Obama removes the missile defense system…get it?
It is an inherent weakness that has now been identified. Obama uses emotion to sway a debate…not facts.
Therefore emotion is what he is acceptable to…now do you get it?
Probably not.

Where would we be if 50% of the lawyers in this country stopped practicing – more prosperous and happier.

50% of the physicians stop practicing and you’ll see real pain and suffering.

Didn’t Obama say that his mother died of cancer, and he was with her…and he wasn’t? I seem to remember him telling another tear-jerker “family testimonial” for his healthcare schtick… “my daughter had meningitis.. (no she didn’t)” isn’t so bad, right?

LOL

CambellBrown on October 6, 2009 at 10:57 AM

Meningitis in infants is *extremely* deadly. So, if they even suspect that an infant has meningitis, they must begin treatment immediately. They do a spinal tap and send the sample off for cultures which takes several days.

Blake on October 6, 2009 at 9:58 AM

But they didn’t do a spinal tap…it was quickly found not to be meningitis…so now what of your theory?
If they diagnosed without spinal tap, then it was just a wild guess, and not a diagnosis. They may have well said she have HIV, or polio, or some other disease that would fit their emotional speech.
Nice try Blake, time for you to review your “medical background”…

They are also politicians and do exactly the same thing when trying to sell their agenda to their own public.

No, it’s just petty “gotcha” stuff.

I’ll defend Palin, too, on the same grounds. Or even Glen Beck.
Anyway, it doesn’t matter. Both sides do it.

Which is why a lot of moderate voters are fed up.

AnninCA on October 6, 2009 at 11:00 AM

I mean, I don’t even watch the news all day and I’ve already got a list as long as my arm of stupid lies Obama has told over healthcare.

Imagine if I was really paying attention. I might have been motivated to go to that Tea Party rally in DC last month. As it stands I’ll just make sure not to miss voting day next year.

CambellBrown on October 6, 2009 at 11:00 AM

I made factual statements, chump. That you and others are too bipartisan to acknowledge that you are wrong, is your problem. It just makes you ineffective advocates for conservative causes.

Blake on October 6, 2009 at 10:48 AM

Heh.

NathanG on October 6, 2009 at 11:02 AM

Those claiming Obama simply misspoke or can’t possibly be held responsible for knowing the medical history of his two kids obviously don’t have kids. If my daughter were diagnosed with a terrible illness I would know. We;re not talking about a sinus infection, but meningitis – a possibly fatal infection. This is akin to claiming Obama can’t be held responsible fro recalling if Michelle ever had breast cancer.

Point is, he lied to further his agenda.

smfoushee on October 6, 2009 at 11:02 AM

Obama ALWAYS LIES TO FURTHER HIS AGENDA!

The man will say simply anything. All of his campaign promises are up in smoke already!

I will say, however, that men tend to be completely out of it when it comes to details about the children, if my ex-husband is any indication. So like I said, maybe he’s an out-of-touch dad…AS WELL AS a big lying panderer.
:)

AnninCA on October 6, 2009 at 11:00 AM

Alinsky somewhere is that you make the other side live up to their beliefs, or something like that.
You are so narrow minded, you think that a Senator Foley, caught emailing pages, then he resigns…is the same as Frank being caught running a male prostitution ring in his house and being honored is the same.
You think a congressman cheating on taxes and lying about income, and being honored by having committee chairs is the same as being hiring an illegal immigrant to clean their house for 5 hours a week, and being forced to resign are of equal ground.
That is how screwy your thought process is…you think Clinton who raped women gets disbarred, but still honored by the dems…and two of his members of his cabinets are force to resign because of it, and they were republicans.
Open your eyes to the depth of the stories, not just look at the surface…look who the dems are honoring.
The conservatives purge, liberals promote.
Rush does drugs, hang him…Lettermen does women, honor him.

Obviously we were able to find the little girl by her name and his id information was on file and it wasn’t meant to be a test but it’s amazing what parent’s don’t remember.

Cindy, please tell me you’re not equating one dad’s inability to remember the classroom his kid goes to just one day a week with not knowing your kid’s medical history – especially when the question of a lethal illness is involved!

People forget things. Part-time parents and distracted parents forget things. Full-time parents forget very little.

But no one – NO ONE – forgets a threat to their child’s life.

Not ever.

Cricket624 on October 6, 2009 at 11:19 AM

No, what I am saying is that people do get confused at small details and their worst fears are magnified in a situation of the health of an infant. If a child is diagnoised with a serious disease no parent is going to forget it or the treatment that followed. The incident wasn’t even helpful to the point that the Obamas were trying to make and the inconsistancy doesn’t help them. I have a hard time getting my a$$ on my shoulders about people’s reactions to very emotional situations and setting my own standards on what they should or shouldn’t remember and how they acted.

Thanks, I just wanted to be sure you get upset when someone lies…so here you are.
This must really upset you…if you get that angry over an unknown blogger, I can just imagine how disappointed you are with your president.

…and of course this little gem has to be thrown in for good measure, not that Sasha’s illness has any other “hidden agenda”….

Her father, however, said the experience changed the way he viewed medical care, prompting him to promise to give nurses a voice in an upcoming health-care summit.

Even the leader of the free world has his weak spots. President Obama’s is his daughters.

When Sasha – “our little precious pea” – was just three months old, she was hospitalized with life-threatening meningitis, Obama said at an unprecedented White House Internet town-hall meeting Thursday.

“Very dangerous,” the President said, responding to a health-policy question from a nurse in the audience. “The doctors did a terrific job, but frankly it was the nurses that were there with us when she had to get a spinal tap, and all sorts of things that were just bringing me to tears.”

Looks like the test weren’t that thorough…

The White House could not confirm Friday which type of meningitis Sasha developed or other details about the illness.

Not that there was any other “agenda”…

Her father, however, said the experience changed the way he viewed medical care, prompting him to promise to give nurses a voice in an upcoming health-care summit.

Blake on October 6, 2009 at 10:07 AM

Blake on October 6, 2009 at 9:58 AM

My daughter ended up in the hospital ER in AZ a couple of years ago horribly ill. The ER doc suspected meningitis. After a lot of blood work and a horrible spinal tap (that left her worse off and in excruciating pain), they were able to run the tests that night and determine that she didn’t have meningitis. Thing is in the couple of hours of waiting for test results they did not treat for meningitis. Weird huh.

Never once in the years since did I, or my husband, tell anyone that our daughter had meningitis.
ER docs thought I had a pulmonary embolism 11 yrs ago. I didn’t. I had CHF, and spent three days in the cardiac ICU. I’ve never managed to confuse what I did and did not have. I think this may be the first time that I’ve even mentioned the pulmonary embolism.
Both in my case and my daughters our great treatment had nothing to do with insurance. It was good doctors with good resources.
Obama is a lying fool Blake. Get over it.

Blake on October 6, 2009 at 10:07 AM

Do you have children?

While it’s possible that an uneducated and uninformed parent might confuse a child being treated for meningitis with actually having the disease, Barack Obama, his supporters keep telling us, is a very smart and educated man. Columbia and Harvard, law professor too. Michelle, also a lawyer, worked for a hospital.

Michelle seems clear that her daughter fortunately did not have the disease, so that should erase any uncertainty in Barack’s mind.

Do you have any idea how slavish you appear to be by trying to defend a mistake on the part of your hero?

The truth is that Barack Obama is a bit of a fabulist. Joe Wilson was right.

I beg to differ. Cliff Notes, while being concise, are fact based. The CollectiveBroadcastingSyndrome is fact challenged.

Blacksmith8 on October 6, 2009 at 12:01 PM

Really? Do a survey. Most parents whose baby’s was put into ICU for a week, whether the cultures come back negative or not, say their kid had meningitis. And whether meningitis or not, the kid is still sick.

Blake on October 6, 2009 at 10:10 AM

In the real world parents know the difference between a negative result and a positive result, between benign and malignant. I’m quite certain that virtually all parents would be incredibly grateful that their child did not have meningitis.

Parents are rarely confused about their children testing negative for a fatal disease.

You obviously don’t have children.
