Video: CNN helps Obama out by … fact-checking SNL’s skit

Via Greg Hengler. Heaven forbid that the average half-drunk late-night Saturday TV viewer be “misinformed” about our savior by a comedy show reminding them that health care’s “not done” (which it isn’t) and that Afghanistan’s gotten worse this year (which it has). Even if you want to clap Obama on the back for keeping his promise to send more troops, might it not perhaps be worth mentioning that he’s currently rethinking the entire “war of necessity” mindset on which he campaigned?
Let’s see if you can guess how the segment ends. Think: Media outlet is in the tank, subject is SNL skewering politicians. What footage is damned near obligatory here? And there it is, at 2:50.

Hey, fair is fair. Remember all the times the MSM fact-checked SNL skits about Bush? Wait….

CNN = Cretinous, Nattering Nitwits
ZK on October 6, 2009 at 8:41 AM
I don’t watch SNL anymore, but I recall skit after skit lampooning Bush soon after the 2000 election as well as his handling of the China recon plane incident. I honestly can’t remember one news organization checking to see if any of those skits were true representation of the facts. To the best of my knowledge this is the very first lampooning of Obama since he has been elected. I am pretty sure that is a record for SNL not making fun of the President since he was elected and a first for any news channel to fact check said skit. And to think conservatives believe there is a liberal slant to the news and entertainment industry.
txaggie on October 6, 2009 at 8:52 AM
That’s just crazy talk. ;)
rollthedice on October 6, 2009 at 8:55 AM
Don’t expect SNL to do much more. It is on NBC after all.
angryed on October 6, 2009 at 8:58 AM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! LOL-ROFLMAO!1!!1
CNN is so getting pwned. Even their primetime line up is getting slaughtered by an insomniac show that airs at 3AM on Fox!
What losers. Does everyone over there want to be Obama’s next love-doll?
Phil-351 on October 6, 2009 at 8:59 AM
So CNN refuses to fact-check the serial Liar in Chief himself, but is more than happy to fact-check a comedy skit about the Liar in Chief.
Sounds about right.
pain train on October 6, 2009 at 8:59 AM
Did anyone at CNN stand up and ask: “Hey, have we ever fact checked SNL before?”
I don’t see how you can say you work for a news organization when a parody of a President prompts such defensiveness and surprise.
CNN is now a parody of itself.
RadClown on October 6, 2009 at 9:04 AM
I understand the Post is bringing Woodward and Bernstein back together to go over Seinfeld episodes for faulty facts about the Clinton years.
Yeah, I need to leave the comedy to Treacher.
SteveMG on October 6, 2009 at 9:09 AM
CNN: tool of the common lefty.
WordsMatter on October 6, 2009 at 9:09 AM
Is this a “warning shot” across the bow by CNN to SNL and others, that going after Obama, how ever timidly it’s done, will not be tolerated and now jokes will be fact checked?
Jeff from WI on October 6, 2009 at 9:11 AM
Greg Gutfeld, God of all that is seen and unseen.
WordsMatter on October 6, 2009 at 9:11 AM
Yes, SNL/NBC is now officially racist.
WordsMatter on October 6, 2009 at 9:13 AM
What’s more amazing is that they have the news lady sitting there at the end stating that the White House had no comment for them on the matter. Really?
That’s either:
a. Because the White House set them up to do the whole thing.
b. Because the White House wouldn’t really have anything to add to the ass-kissing segment anyways.
What’s worse, a state-run media or a state-infatuated media?
Seixon on October 6, 2009 at 9:13 AM
Now THAT is all wee-wee’d up!
TugboatPhil on October 6, 2009 at 9:17 AM
Wow, 3 pages of comments so far, and not one troll defending CNN. I would have thought at least one of them would attempt to change the subject to Faux News.
Del Dolemonte on October 6, 2009 at 9:20 AM
This segment exposed Politifact as an extention of Obama’s propaganda machine.
Bill Addiar offers no real fact checking and makes declarations based on how much important things are. They throw in some unimportant negatives about Obama from time to time to make it seem they are fair and not partisan.
The whole idea of a handful of people, made up of journalists like any news outlet has, designated to telling us what is the truth and what isn’t is rather silly.
LeeSeneca on October 6, 2009 at 9:21 AM
So, we need a poll!!!
Who are the REAL comedians:
___ SNL
___ CNN
Yoop on October 6, 2009 at 9:24 AM
Wow! Thanks for the cool pop-up IQ test. What an enhancement!
Akzed on October 6, 2009 at 9:24 AM
SNL should do a skit about CNN fact-checking a skit on SNL. It’d be like being between two mirrors or something.
Akzed on October 6, 2009 at 9:26 AM
The whole Tina Fey/Sarah Palin impersonation boils down to “Its funny making fun of white peoples (especially non-coastal) accents”. God knows making fun of a black or hispanic guy’s accent would get you called a racist, but white people? That is ok.
Speedwagon82 on October 6, 2009 at 9:31 AM
Are you kidding me with this??? I guess the fact checking guys at CNN were sick for all of Sept, Oct and Nov. last year. I am sure they would have been fact checking their brains out during Palin’s pummelling had they been there. Yeah RIGHT!! How does CNN have the AUDACITY to do this stuff????
Dan Pet on October 6, 2009 at 9:33 AM
That just doesn’t seem right, does it? So:
(Drive-By commentary courtesy of trolls-are-us)
;-)
Yoop on October 6, 2009 at 9:33 AM
CNN is a parody of a news organization, so fact-checking SNL probably fits.

OMG, don’t these idiots realize that we need a ‘fact check’ to check their ‘facts’?
DanaSmiles on October 6, 2009 at 9:40 AM
Thanks!

Yeah, I must have missed the CNN broadcasts where they fact-checked those Palin skits. Can you link those for me? I’ll wait.
SKYFOX on October 6, 2009 at 9:45 AM
Sooo, the CNN says that Obama should be taking credit for the current situation in Afghanistan? That’s great reporting, right there.
hawksruleva on October 6, 2009 at 9:49 AM
WWWAAAAGGGGHHHHHHH, give them a pacifier.
(how bout fact-checking Wolf on Jeopardy)
la.rt.wngr on October 6, 2009 at 9:55 AM
Yahoo couldn’t resist either.
J_Crater on October 6, 2009 at 9:55 AM
Well, I heard a story about this skit on the radio. Guess yesterday really was a slow news day.
AnninCA on October 6, 2009 at 9:59 AM
Actually, a lot of gags revolve around accents, from all the races. Black comediennes made that OK years ago. I didn’t mind the Tina Fey jokes, either. It was very clever. And I loved the show where Sarah actually joined them. She was not only a great sport, but hilarious herself.
I was only surprised when the joke became the fact in the minds of so many young people. But then, a lot of young people are not yet mature enough to really address contradictions. If she’d been truly that way, she wouldn’t have ever joined the SNL staff. That escaped a lot of the youth.
AnninCA on October 6, 2009 at 10:02 AM
Didn’t CrockObama have a tv show about his life?
Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David pitched Obama as a “show about nothing,”
If calling out Obama means you are a racist, does their attacking Sarah Palin mean they are rasict?
Question: If Wolf Blitzed answered a question correctly on CNN would anyone know?
Answer: NO, they are watching Red Eye.
dthorny on October 6, 2009 at 10:08 AM
“Really? CBS Fact-checking SNL? Are you Serious? Really? Are you Seriously SERIOUS? Really? Dude?!”
I look forward to the next episode…
SnowSun on October 6, 2009 at 10:20 AM
RedEye beats primetime CNN shows…. that might be because Bill Schultz is so gay…. and that might be because they tell us how gay he is on each episode :P His hair is horrible
Donut on October 6, 2009 at 10:24 AM
fact checking SNL, finally something up to CNN’s speed. This also gives a sense of where CNN thinks America gets its news and political sense, SNL, 30 Rock, and Hollywood are their new medium. CNN has given up all hope of being a credible news source anymore.
I’m sure they are proud of the great work they do there…
redfred on October 6, 2009 at 10:31 AM
LOL, and CNN takes themselves seriously? I stopped watching those goofs because I can’t take them seriously. Fact checking a comedy show is just the latest in the CNN buffoonery.
elclynn on October 6, 2009 at 10:38 AM
CNN should make a regular weekly show on “Exposing SNL”…a perfect use for Wolf.
right2bright on October 6, 2009 at 11:16 AM
One more thought…if SNL or Onion, not do a parody on this, they will be missing a huge opportunity.
Imagine a skit of CNN analyzing comedians comments for factual statements.
“It has been noted that this statement by Stephen Wright did not happen…In my house there’s this light switch that doesn’t do anything. Every so often
I would flick it on and off just to check. Yesterday, I got a call from a
woman in Germany. She said, “Cut it out.”
We investigated it and first it would be impossible to wire a house like that, second, Stephen does not know how to speak German…
right2bright on October 6, 2009 at 11:27 AM
“… dead on impersonation of former Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin.”
*sigh*
She was a candidate. She was picked by McCain. No one had heard of her (certainly not CNN) before she was picked. Now she deserves as much scorn and ridicule as can be heaped on her.
Wonder why..
spmat on October 6, 2009 at 11:35 AM
Even MSNBC wouldn’t sink this low on the journalistic integrity scale. Then again, maybe they’re upset right now that CNN beat them to the punch.
Percy_Peabody on October 6, 2009 at 11:46 AM
CNN fact-checked and SNL skit? Sheesh. Had it not been for Hot Air, I never would have known. I de-programmed CNN and HLN from my telly, so those channels don’t even show up when I channel surf. :)
olesparkie on October 6, 2009 at 11:47 AM
I also de-programmed MSNBC……didn’t want to risk poisoning my brain by seeing even the most remote flicker of this “network”.
olesparkie on October 6, 2009 at 11:48 AM
CNN is still trying to confirm that Chicago is definitely out.
karlant on October 6, 2009 at 11:51 AM
Next week CNN will “fact check” South Park, The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and Bob the Builder (can he really build things that fast?)…
What, why not? If you’ll “fact check” a comedy sketch, why not children’s shows and cartoons? Is it really that much less plausible that they’ll do this?
gekkobear on October 6, 2009 at 12:08 PM
Along with the jawdropping veer from honest journalism displayed in this pandering apology to the President I was happy to see that they managed to throw some Palin bashing into the report. It just wouldnt be right to talk totally about how Obama is a do nothing without some Palin laughing and finger pointing.
Koa on October 6, 2009 at 12:17 PM
It would be funny if not so pathetic. Why would they feel the need to “fact check” a comedy skit?
I guess it just goes to show just how desperate they are to keep propping up the POTUS.
cibolo on October 6, 2009 at 12:27 PM
I think CNN just earned a question at the next prime time press conference!
NickelAndDime on October 6, 2009 at 12:42 PM
Hey CNN. I may watch you again, if you actually did what you’re supposed to. Report the news. And fact checking a comedy skit doesn’t count as news, or even news worthy. Idiots!!!
capejasmine on October 6, 2009 at 1:14 PM
Okay… at first I thought… well, so CNN is protecting the President and fact-checking SNL. GREAT I thought! This will force them to bring back Palin in a new HONEST light….
CNN explicitly says this is not a FAIR portrayal of Obama? while at the same time mention Tina Fey’s DEAD ON impersonation of Palin!?!?!?
Um… I’m calling it the ONN…. the Obama Nonsense Network. Being fair is not in CNN’s playbook. Wolf BSer has no shame.
The IQ of people still watching CNN has to be around 65.
(I don’t have a TV, so I’m spared most of this)
(if I had a TV I wouldn’t have a TV now, because I would have thrown a lamp at the screen if I saw this live)

You nailed it! The hypocrisy and total advocacy is outrageous.
Stephanie on October 6, 2009 at 1:31 PM
Hey SNL–time to do a skit about dim bulb, self important anchors making it obvious they have IQ’s rivaling their teleprompters. Lets do a Jeopardy skit with a bearded buffoon anchor person!

Hey SNL–time to do a skit about dim bulb, self important anchors making it obvious they have IQ’s rivaling their teleprompters. Lets do a Jeopardy skit with a bearded buffoon anchor person!
Also–you should use Obamtuerisms as the answers and have the anchor give the correct corresponding question to them. You know like 57 states, Obama’s daughter’s name etc.
Skewer 2 birds with one skit!
chickasaw42 on October 6, 2009 at 2:06 PM
I don’t know what is funnier, the skit, or CNN fact-checking it!
jeffn21 on October 6, 2009 at 2:06 PM
CNN hands down, fact checking a comedian…”Hey, there is no way you can actually put an arrow through your head and play the banjo, Steve Martin is not telling the truth…”
right2bright on October 6, 2009 at 2:11 PM
Just another example in a log line of why CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc are biased hacks.
I see they threw in how SNL got Obama wrong but how they are so gleefull of SNL’s rep of Palin.
