Video: CNN helps Obama out by … fact-checking SNL’s skit

posted at 7:52 pm on October 5, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Greg Hengler. Heaven forbid that the average half-drunk late-night Saturday TV viewer be “misinformed” about our savior by a comedy show reminding them that health care’s “not done” (which it isn’t) and that Afghanistan’s gotten worse this year (which it has). Even if you want to clap Obama on the back for keeping his promise to send more troops, might it not perhaps be worth mentioning that he’s currently rethinking the entire “war of necessity” mindset on which he campaigned?

Let’s see if you can guess how the segment ends. Think: Media outlet is in the tank, subject is SNL skewering politicians. What footage is damned near obligatory here? And there it is, at 2:50.

Blowback

Alex: “This news network panders to Obama 24/7.”

Wolfie: (Excitedly) “What is CNN?”

Alex: “No, sorry Wolf, CNN is not a news network.”

Unbelievable. Obviously, CNN’s ratings are so low they’re testing the waters as a comedy channel.

Griz on October 5, 2009 at 9:02 PM

All SNL needs to do is to air the end of the Celebrity Double Jeopardy round with Wolf, paying special attention to the part where Alex pays Wolf out of the Pity Kitty so that Wolf can play in Final Jeopardy.

Wait, the CNN “fact check” on an SNL skewering of Obama includes a CNN infobabe saying Tina Fey had a “dead on” impersonation of Sarah Palin while showing a clip of Fey not sounding anything like Sarah Palin, not to mention the “skewering” of Palin was as a mindless bimbette?

Okey dokey, CNN.

malkinmania on October 5, 2009 at 9:17 PM

Fact check? I’m not surprised CNN had to outsource it. It’s been so long since they’ve seen an actual fact. Too bad they think non-partisan means anyone that agrees with the One.

This is just so unbelievably sad. CNN = FACEPALM

MrX on October 5, 2009 at 9:26 PM

It’s not far fetched to suspect a Rahm/Axelrod call to CNN. What if it becomes late night acceptable to ridicule Obama? How does that Mark Twain quote go: “Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand”?

Barnestormer on October 5, 2009 at 9:27 PM

Consider this:

This is news, according to the man who had to borrow money for Final Jeopardy.

Obama has performed a true miracle…he has reformed the Ten Commandments, shortening them to a single dictum:

“Thou shalt not make fun of The One, lest thou be skewered by CNN”.

BobMbx on October 5, 2009 at 9:28 PM

That’s pretty unbelievable. Has that ever happened?

p0s3r on October 5, 2009 at 8:04 PM

Chris Wallace said this was the most thin-skinned administration ever and called them a “bunch of crybabies”. You know this segment came at the White House’s behest; you also know Sarah Palin has gotten under Obama’s skin… SHE’S IN HIS HEAD. I just cannot believe how completely CNN is in the bag for Obama. Well, at least we also know the real “blithering idiot” is Wolf “Jeopardy FAIL” Blitzer.

I’d love to see Sarah Palin, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden on Celebrity Jeopardy. And throw in Joy Behar and Megan McCain too.

SouperConservative on October 5, 2009 at 9:43 PM

The irony is this shows just how little fun has been made of Obama. If this were a normal event, no one would be talking about it. It reminds me of when Charlie Gibson asked Obama a tough question about the Capital Gains Tax and he was skewered the next day for being tough on THE ONE. Needless to say, that was the last tough question Obama saw for the remainder of the campaign. ANy bets on whether SNL will dare do another non-flattering piece on Obama this week?

CNN real needs to dig just a little bit deeper on their fact check! If we are not worse off in Af/Pak, than why does McChrystal want so many more troops? It does not look like we will be closing Gitmo anytime real soon, and we will have troops in IRAQ for sometime. Strategically we will need a base for any operations in IRAN….Ooops I was not suppose to say that!

I don’t see anything wrong with poking fun at this President or any President so long as it’s in good taste. Of course “taste” seems to vary with whether there is a “D” or an “R” next to a politician’s name.

KittyLowrey on October 5, 2009 at 9:08 PM

This was the thing that stood out for me the most in that whole garbage spiel, and made me want to throw up besides. How on earth could they POSSIBLY be expected to be taken seriously saying this??? A comedy show does a comic skit about the president: Its horrible, all wrong, shouldn’t have been done to make THE ONE look bad. The same comedy show does a comic skit about Sarah Palin, trying to destroy her reputation in the process: its all right, dead on accurate and more should have been done. As soon as they said that about the “dead on” impersonation of Palin, CNN lost any and ALL credibility that they could have been working for with this whole disgusting air time.

Highlar on October 5, 2009 at 10:11 PM

So SNL takes a shot at Obama, CNN get’s its panties in a bunch so, they drag Sarah Palin into it? She is so the leader of the Conservative|Republican party…

CCRWM on October 5, 2009 at 10:16 PM

As much as I like Palin, the Palin skits were quite good IMHO keeping in mind I haven’t watched the show itself in probably 25 years. What was even better was when she actually went on the show. The Obama impersonation sucks, and though I think he’s a zero as well, wasn’t at all funny.

Dr. ZhivBlago on October 5, 2009 at 10:19 PM

It was Chelsea Handler who said Wolf Blitzer looks the same upside down as he does right side up. Damn if she wasn’t dead on.

Does anybody remember CNN addressing anything like movies, comedy shows,or even pundits that told lie after lie after lie about Bush?

None.

The media laughed and enjoyed anything negative brought up about the Bush Administration no matter how blatantly false the allegations were.

Now we get a full court press on a simple comedy skit so that Mr. 57 states feelings don’t get hurt.

What a joke.

I wish I could agree that it is silly to say that but sadly, it is the truth. People do get their news from SNL and The Daily Show’s pretend news.

Dollayo on October 6, 2009 at 12:46 AM

The Daily Show’s pretend news.

I think they get the acceptable progressive angle on stories, but neither of the shows really gives the actual news. Well, maybe Stewart does a slightly better job at times.

AnninCA on October 6, 2009 at 12:48 AM

Even if it is only SNL making fun of Obama, it’s about darn time someone in the media does something besides kiss his a**. Pretty much everything in the skit was true, he hasn’t done anything, except drive an agenda that is ruining the Country.

NIce dog though.

Susanboo on October 6, 2009 at 1:10 AM

What’s even sadder is not only did they air this segment on The Situation Room, they doubled down on the damn thing and had a “debate” on the SNL skit between Stephanie Miller and Penn Jilett on “Larry King Live” (who at least didn’t ask about what happened during the part “when the president falls down”).

What’s next? Instant analysis from Anderson Cooper on the 10 p.m. newscast the next time SNL does a midweek “Weekend Update” special with any jabs at Obama? (“CNN — The only network that dares fact-check Lorne Michaels’ ass”)

jon1979 on October 6, 2009 at 1:11 AM

The fact that the CNN drones can keep a straight face while doing this type of reporting tells you how utterly delusional the human mind can become when trying to deny reality.

Yoop on October 6, 2009 at 1:18 AM

Well that ought to teach anyone else thinking of making such a ridiculous joke a valuable lesson. CNN will fact check your jokes for accuracy should you dare attempt to make others laugh at The One.

Is that supposed to be an impersonation? Sure they make him look like Zero – but when you use your own voice and mannerisms the bit is lost.

Mr Purple on October 6, 2009 at 2:07 AM

There are countless items I find disturbing about this whole thing, but I’ll just highlight a few…

First of all, as I’ve repeatedly said, and I feel hasn’t been highlighted enough, Fred Armison clearly deliberately threw in the towel on his Obama impersonation. Admittedly, it was never great, but at least he always tried to do the voice. Just jump back to the clip which included the dig at Beck. He attempts the voice the entire time (as he did in all previous bits). Why drop the voice, and just use his normal (borderline gay) speaking voice? Was it to lessen the sting to their great leader? It makes absolutely no sense. In fact, he almost couldn’t even do it. You’ll notice he slips in to the Obama voice very briefly a handful of times, but very deliberately gets back to just using his normal voice.

Seriously, you all must have noticed this. It’s very, very odd.

Now, setting that aside… Why did CNN do this segment? Can anyone show me where they ever did such analysis of an SNL segment mocking Bush? Yeah, that’s what I thought.

I mean, we all know about media corruption, and that Fox News has comedy shows on at 3am that beats CNN prime time programming, but WTF is this? MSNBC has basically given up pretending to be objective, but to CNN think that doing the same is a good strategy?

By the way Blitzer. Bravo on getting your ass handed to you on Celebrity Jeopardy… by Andy friggin Richter! I guess it’s better than the time you said that when you look at the faces of folks in New Orleans a few years ago (who lost everything when the levees broke), you noticed they were “so poor, and so black” (yes, he said it… check out YouTube.

RightWinged on October 6, 2009 at 2:36 AM
