NFL week 4 open thread
posted at 10:00 am on October 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
I’m leaving the nation’s capital as the NFL kicks off its slate of games for its fourth week, which is probably a good idea, considering how well the Redskins have played so far this year. After last week’s loss to the Lions, a loss that ended a 19-game losing streak for Detroit, the mood here is a mix between fatalistic acceptance of another lost season to anger over incompetence, amateurism, and bungling. However, since that’s how most of the rest of us feel about Washington DC during the week, I don’t think ‘Skins fans are going to get a lot of sympathy.
Looking back over the last three weeks, I’m doing pretty good on my picks. I’m 16-3, but unfortunately two of those three losses came from the Pittsburgh Steelers. They lost last week in their division and are now looking at the backs of the Bengals and and the Baltimore Ravens, both of whom have gotten off to a better start than I thought they would. The Steelers play the San Diego Chargers in the night game at home tonight, and they have to go without Willie Parker and Troy Polamalu. I’m still going to pick Pittsburgh, who always seems to do well in night games at home. It should be close, though, perhaps 28-24.
Other notable games:
- Green Bay at Minnesota – This is a Monday Night game, which means we all get to see what happens when Brett Favre meets his old team for the first time ever as the opposing quarterback. Should be a great game, full of drama, but the unbeaten Vikings should win it, 31-21.
- Baltimore at New England – A better-than-expected Ravens team faces a weaker-than-expected Patriots squad. I’m picking the Patriots to win this one at home, though, as Tom Brady settles down and their defense picks it up against Joe Flacco. It won’t be a shootout but the Pats should eke out a 17-14 win.
- Tampa Bay at Washington – Call this the Futility Bowl. I think the Redskins win in a game no one watches, 21-14.
- Tennessee at Jacksonville – The Titans are a better team than 0-3, but I’m not sure Jacksonville is better than 1-2. I think Tennessee gets off the schneid here with a 24-10 win.
- NY Jets at New Orleans – Mark Sanchez has proven himself in three straight games as a rookie who can handle the NFL. Can the Jets defense stop the Saints, though? One of these teams has to lose its first game today, and it won’t be the Saints at home. New Orleans’ offense will overwhelm the Jets, 31-24, but expect Sanchez to continue to shine.

Speaking of hopefully, I hope Mike Tomlin reinforced the idea that there are two halves to a football game.

Of course I’d love to see Gang Green go 4-0…especially over the ‘aints at home…but it could go either way. The Titans fell apart last week, and they were hungry for that win. Today, I think it’s going to be the Jets D that stops N.O.
Jets win: 17-14

Can’t wait for Jets v. Saints –
#1 defense meets explosive offense w/ improved defense and revived running game to give Brees more options.
Definite BBQ time!

The Saints are doing great so far this year, I wonder how much longer they can keep it up. Do not get me wrong, I was raised a Saints fan, wore the paper bag over my head. I would just be happy if we make it to the playoffs!

Yeah, ‘Skins over TB…and here’s hoping the Cheatriots lose to B’more.

Not supposing that you’re superstitious or anything, but the only time the Steelers won was when you forgot to put up the score widget.

Unfortunately, I think Jets/Saints will come down to whether Payton makes one of his patented coaching mistakes that have hurt N.O. ever since ’06. Payton has an awful habit of going for fourth downs way too deep in his own territory, and then also trying to repetitively drive it up the middle in these situations when it’s obviously not working.
My call is that it’s time, once again, as it is every Payton-coached season, that a call or NON-call by Payton in a key 4th-down situation will be the decider.

I’ve been a loyal, die-hard Redskins fan for decades. This is the first year where I can honestly say that I can’t predict anything they do and should really expect the worst. After the Giants game, the Redskins have played a rogues gallery of 0-fers: the Rams, the Lions, now the Bucs, the Panthers next week (who will be still winless because they’ve got a bye this week), and the Chiefs (who are winless now and look like they may lose their next two games). Despite this creampuff schedule, they could’ve been winless too, and might be in the running to lose all of those games before getting into the meat of their schedule.
No, I don’t think Zorn will get fired if he loses to Tampa Bay. He’s got too many hats on for that to happen right now. But then again, this is the Redskins.
ieplaya on October 4, 2009 at 10:17 AM
But forgetting Chelsea v. Liverpool! Huge – with Man U settling for a draw yesterday. Chelsea can take sole possession of first place.
ManUFan on October 4, 2009 at 10:20 AM
Teleycoman,
I hope I’m wrong – but Payton has consistently lost the Saints 2 games/year with the same sort of obvious coaching error I described. This smells like the week for it – though I do hope I’m wrong!
cane_loader on October 4, 2009 at 10:23 AM
Normally I would say a Jets win is possible, as they have looked great so far, but the game is in the Superdome, so it will be to the Saints’ advantage.
Just wish I could see the game-here in New England, the tv programming geniuses, instead of giving us a 4 PM game bwtween 2 3-0 teams, is giving us the much more important Dallas-Denver game. “America’s team”, y’know?
Del Dolemonte on October 4, 2009 at 10:25 AM
Look for Green Bay to beat the Vikings. Detroit had the correct game plan-hot Favre early and often, use an OLB as a spy on Peterson, and make the rest of the team beat you. Schwartz didn’t have the talent to close the deal.
Samauri Mike and his 49′ers were paying attention and came at the Vikings with essentially the same game plan, lots of run blitz’s well disguised. Oh, so close.
This one will get brutal if McCarthy payed attention. The Packer secondary is tough, can roll up the corners and make it work with single coverage on the WR’s.
23-10 Packers.
With Desmond Clark back to block for runs, Forte should finally get the Bear running game back on track, and the Bears will give the rest of the division pause for thought when they cruise past Detroit. If you have Cutler on your FF team, this is the week to have him starting.
MarkT on October 4, 2009 at 10:29 AM
Yeah, I’ll agree that it could go either way…in any event, it should be a really close game. Heh, technically, I’m in New England as well, but it’s that Southwest corner of Conn., so we always get the NYC games.
JetBoy on October 4, 2009 at 10:31 AM
Del,
Yeah, I hate when the programming geniuses do that. You’d think that they’d have people working for them who had enough of the feel for the NFL that in the first couple days of the week they could decide where to send the crew! Guess it probably boils down to non-portability of local advertising revenue or something. I do remember when the word “TV time-out” used to drive me bonkers as a sacrilegious intrusion upon the purity of the game. Oh, the innocence and idealism of youth…..
Re: the Saints, I will tell you, as Teleycoman would know, that when the Saints win, Cajuns holler “Who Dat” out car windows all day – hollering at other drivers, people on front lawns, etc. until they “Who-Dat” back. Great custom – every team should have one like it!! Makes everyone smile

Tampa Bay vs the Red asses. TB by 14
Former Oilers vs the Jags. I think the Titans by 7
Jets vs the Ain’ts, sorry Jetboy your boys are going down by 20.
And the most important game of the week, which Morrissey won’t mention cuz he’s a hater.
Cowboys at Mile high, the boys in a squeaker by one.

Re: Favre, I just hope that he doesn’t end up like Joe Montana with the Chiefs – great when he wasn’t injured – but injured more and more often as the season went on until his backup just couldn’t carry the team. That was sad to watch.

San Francisco to win.
Houston to win.
Those are my pool picks this week. We can pick only one team once.
Mr. Joe on October 4, 2009 at 10:50 AM
As much as it galls me, I don’t see the Packers winning Monday night either. The pass protection and run defense has been atrocious. Aaron Rodgers is the better QB but he’s been running for his life. Adrian Peterson should have a good game against a suspect rushing defense.
packsoldier on October 4, 2009 at 10:50 AM
Lots of action today, especially for a Fantasy Football fanatic! Fantasy Football changed my focus from individual teams, e.g. I was a Dolphin fanatic for decades, but hated the Steelers, 49′ers, and a long list of others. In my dynasty league, I now have players from the Ravens, Steelers, 49′ers, etc. but not a one from the Dolphins. I just picked up FA Isaac “Red Zone” Redman (apparently Pitt’s fans gave him the “Red Zone” name) who was promoted from the practice squad, and hope he leaves cleat-marks up and down Mendenhall’s back. I have Willie Parker on the bench again…
Karmi on October 4, 2009 at 10:51 AM
Giants may pitch another shutout today. As much as I’d like to see the Jets win, I suspect Sanchez will struggle today facing his first truly hostile crowd. The Saints defense is flying under the radar and I think they’ll get a couple of picks. Brees is deadly against the blitz, but I still think the Jets will bring it early and often. Take the NYJ and the points.
Pittsburgh has been a house of horrors for the Chargers but I think they come up big tonight.
JammieWearingFool on October 4, 2009 at 10:54 AM
San Diego 23, Pittsburg 16. The Chargers have been getting better each week. The Steelers . . . not so much.

Being in upstate NY instead of the city, we are treated to the idiotic Buffalo – Miami game, as if anyone cares, rather than the battle of the two undefeated teams. I’ll go with Jetboy today and still believe that the Jet’s D will hold down N.O. in a low scoring win for the Jets.
In return for Ed picking against my team, I will pick the Steelers to win tonight, virtually assuring another loss for the Steel Curtain as they continue to swirl around the bottom of the bowl in the AFC.
Beyond that, I’ll take Green Bay to knock Favre down a peg or two, Baltimore in a blowout and the Titans pick up their first win, finally.

MarkT I agree. One other thing to throw into the air. Brett has trouble with big games. I have watched him his whole career. He comes out to high, makes a big mistake and then attempts to make up for it. That is why his interception to pass completed ratio is so high. Oh by the way-my first name is also Mark.

What? Predict? Predict? The Redskins, um, when could you predict anything about them, or, for that matter, most any NFL team? Before last season started, Patriots and Cowboys fans were smugly waiting for their squareoff in the SB. Yea, that happended. And the arrogant New England fans loved pouring it all over the Jets and Fins faithful.
P.S. I know that this hurts. But… YOU ARE ROOTING FOR A BUSINESS! When the Steelers start worrying about my future, I will start going wild about the results when they win.

IlikedAUH2O on October 4, 2009 at 11:55 AM
That’s why we always owned him at Texas Stadium. Get a sack and an interception on him and he is done. He will throw 4 more picks in that game. He played 9 games in his career at the place with the hole in the roof. Lost every one.

Dan Snyder, the Redskins owner has spent $548,000,000 developing a micro-nuke. The tiny nuclear device will be employed sometime today vaporizing the Tampa Bay sideline. They will then win by default.

The Patriots did the same thing-lost the coin toss, and fumbled away the kickoff to the Pats. Sadly the Pats could only get 3 out of it. The Ravens then sputtered down the field (with plenty of penalties) and just scored a TD. 7-3 Baltimore.
Del Dolemonte on October 4, 2009 at 1:27 PM
Thanks for your optimism, but with Seneca Wallace leading the 1.5 string seahawks, I don’t think they will score more than one touchdown. I don’t know if my boys can score more than 16 points in the game. The first quarter has not been real stellar.
But all is not doom and gloom. Oregon ran up 52 points on Washington State. The Ducks are flying high again.

Right before the TD the officials let the Chiefs know that they weren’t allowed to get the Giants’ players dresses dirty.
That personal foul was horrendous! It was not a hit on a defenseless receiver. It wasn’t high like Moose kept trying to convince everyone. It looked to be a solid hit as the ball got there. But apparently now in the NFL hits aren’t allowed on QBs or receivers?
red winger on October 4, 2009 at 1:57 PM
Agree with red winger. That was a totally bogus call. It was a clean hit at shoulder level just as the ball arrived. Dumb, dumb, dumb on the refs.
Jazz Shaw on October 4, 2009 at 2:07 PM
Ravens and Patriots just exchanged possessions that both ended with punts, still 10-7 NE. 7:11 until the half.
Lengthy injury time here-one of the Raven’ tackles is hurt after he hit the backside of the Raven’s QB.

No, it was the Ravens’ left tackle who was hurt, and he got hurt by colliding with Flacco.
TD Sammy Morris. N.E. now leads 17-7. 14 unanswered points.

The Ravens have been called twice now for roughing the quarterback. The second one cost them 7.
Del Dolemonte on October 4, 2009 at 2:26 PM
Payton Manning is remarkable. I have watched him in three games this season and he is clicking. It is at the point where I am surprised when the Colts don’t score on a drive. Indy looks formidable this year.
Meanwhile, Hawks fans, this game has the feel of a done deal. Though Ray Willis and his holding penalties have more to do with keeping Seattle out of the end zone than Wallace, I can’t see the Hawks putting up 21 points in the second half behind Seneca. Seahawks need to get healthy and mentally start the season over again.
Mallard T. Drake on October 4, 2009 at 2:33 PM
That still was a very late hit on Flacco. I’m glad he wasn’t hurt. Hope the tackle is o.k.
