Inevitable: Chicago pols blame Bush for Olympics loss

posted at 7:15 pm on October 4, 2009 by Allahpundit

Makes sense. What better way for the international community to express its contempt for Bush’s policies than by … publicly humiliating the guy who got elected by repudiating him?

“There must be” resentment against America, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, near the stage where he had hoped to give a victory speech in Daley Center Plaza. “The way we [refused to sign] the Kyoto Treaty, we misled the world into Iraq. The world had a very bad taste in its mouth about us. But there was such a turnaround after last November. The world now feels better about America and about Americans. That’s why I thought the president’s going was the deal-maker.”

State Rep. Susana Mendoza (D-Chicago) said she saw firsthand the resentment against America five years ago when she was in Rio de Janeiro. “I feel in my gut that this vote today was political and mean-spirited,” she said.

“I travel a lot. … I thought we had really turned a corner with the election of President Obama. People are so much more welcoming of Americans now. But this isn’t the people of those countries. This is the leaders still living with outdated impressions of Americans.”

U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said she was approached by a consul general at the plaza as they waited for word Friday. “He said … he was hearing that there wasn’t enough time for Barack Obama to dispel the old image. … But I don’t know if that’s it.”

The implication, of course, is that it would have been justifiable and possibly even advisable to shaft Chicago if the Bushitler was still president and had gone to make the pitch. Good luck reconciling that with the left’s magnificent faux outrage at the right for not putting aside politics and rooting on America the city the corrupt Daley machine this time around. Frankly, for once in his life, Mike Lupica’s dead right: Chicago got lucky, whether they realize it or not.

Here’s George Will on “This Week” floating an alternative theory. And he’s not the only one.

Update: A nice point from the comments: Chicago was selected as a finalist for the 2016 games last summer, when the Chimperor was still president. So much for Bushism poisoning the city’s chances.

Obama’s ‘popularity’ contest

We need a leader, not a prom king.

The Copenhagen debacle came on the heels of the groveling spectacle that was Obama’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

Before the world’s largest collection of mass murderers and tyrants, Obama continued the apology tour he commenced after assuming office, repeating his Cairo mantra that “no world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will succeed,” among other contrite platitudes. In the rough-and-tumble of foreign affairs, as in life, people don’t respect those who don’t respect themselves, and the world has responded resoundingly to our post-national president’s periodic penitence.

Obama’s efforts — mostly intentional — are to make the US look small, unthreatening, humble. That may make us more popular, but the IOC’s rejection of Obama’s personal appeals was yet another indication that there are far more significant metrics of global influence than being liked. I would rather the United States be respected than liked.

The stunning rebuke delivered to this most internationally popular of presidents is a teachable moment.

If Barack Obama’s suave, “citizen of the world” charm can’t even get us beyond the first round of an international sporting competition, what does that say about his ability to garner support for solving far more serious and intractable problems?

Schadenfreude on October 5, 2009 at 12:18 AM

How long can they milk this “Bush’s fault” thing? The deceit, illogic and derangement of the left is becoming intolerable.

Liberals in general and Democrats in particular are the antithesis of everything that the founders stood for, and are directly the cause of every major problem that the nation currently faces.

How difficult is that to understand?

Oh how I wish that the left of this country could have their own nation to ruin and leave the rest of us alone.

justltl on October 5, 2009 at 12:34 AM

How nice it would be to see side-by-side nations with all the leftists in one and all the conservatives in the other.

I would like to be a border guard taking potshots at the libs trying to escape from their hellhole into the conservative side.

Sorry, just fantasizing out loud.

Carry on.

justltl on October 5, 2009 at 12:40 AM

Playing the blame Bush card is similar to playing the race card. People are tired of it, so its not going to work anymore. On Fox News Sunday today the panel laughed as Roland Burris (who supports ACORN) blamed Bush for Obama’s failure in Denmark. It’s long pass time for Obama to take Michael Jackson’s advice and start with “the man in the mirror” before blaming anyone else.

NO. IT’S COMPLETELY OBAMA’S ARROGANCE AT FAULT.

Is it possible to just email Teleprompter presentations?
I mean, just imagine all the money and carbon emissions we could have saved if the Odufus just made a PDF or Power Point file of his Teleprompter crap and sent them over to Europe via Comcast or FIOS…

Really! It would have saved the transatlantic flights of a couple of 747s and Oprah’s …what, G-5?

Of course, the sales pitch would still stink on ice, but it would have saved US taxpayers millions of dollars. If I were in the White House, I would get 2K or Id, or some other video-game developer to make an Obama program that just reads the teleprompter crap without all the lights and cameras and carbon emissions.

I am really confused by the Left’s perception of Bush. When he was President he was slightly smarter than a retarded baboon. If he ever did anything right it was sheer dumb luck. If you doubt me just watch any episode of Family Guy. Now that he is out of office he is presented as a diabolical genius who foresaw all of these events years ago and planned ahead to make America fail. So which is it? You can’t have both people. Also, from the sound of it, you would think Bush is sneaking into the White House at night screwing up all of Obama’s perfect plans.

Putting the blame on the hubris, and immaturity of BARRY SOETERO AND HIS MEDIA, where it belongs, and NOT CELEBRATING THE VICTORY FOR RIO DE JANERO, a region of South America that desperately needs the economic stimulus, is promoting more contempt for the United States, at a time when we should be trying to prove that we are worthy of respect from foreign countries and our allies.

1. Can’t Obama change this supposedly horrible visa program? Why hasn’t he?
2. I seem to recall an Olympics being held in 2002 in the USA, right after 9/11 – would that answer the Pakistani gentleman’s question?
3. Many of the athletes would qualify for the visa waiver program, anyways, and all athletes have agents who take care of all this for them.

Weak sauce.
