Inevitable: Chicago pols blame Bush for Olympics loss
posted at 7:15 pm on October 4, 2009 by Allahpundit
Makes sense. What better way for the international community to express its contempt for Bush’s policies than by … publicly humiliating the guy who got elected by repudiating him?
“There must be” resentment against America, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, near the stage where he had hoped to give a victory speech in Daley Center Plaza. “The way we [refused to sign] the Kyoto Treaty, we misled the world into Iraq. The world had a very bad taste in its mouth about us. But there was such a turnaround after last November. The world now feels better about America and about Americans. That’s why I thought the president’s going was the deal-maker.”
State Rep. Susana Mendoza (D-Chicago) said she saw firsthand the resentment against America five years ago when she was in Rio de Janeiro. “I feel in my gut that this vote today was political and mean-spirited,” she said.
“I travel a lot. … I thought we had really turned a corner with the election of President Obama. People are so much more welcoming of Americans now. But this isn’t the people of those countries. This is the leaders still living with outdated impressions of Americans.”
U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said she was approached by a consul general at the plaza as they waited for word Friday. “He said … he was hearing that there wasn’t enough time for Barack Obama to dispel the old image. … But I don’t know if that’s it.”
The implication, of course, is that it would have been justifiable and possibly even advisable to shaft Chicago if the Bushitler was still president and had gone to make the pitch. Good luck reconciling that with the left’s magnificent faux outrage at the right for not putting aside politics and rooting on America the city the corrupt Daley machine this time around. Frankly, for once in his life, Mike Lupica’s dead right: Chicago got lucky, whether they realize it or not.
Here’s George Will on “This Week” floating an alternative theory. And he’s not the only one.
Update: A nice point from the comments: Chicago was selected as a finalist for the 2016 games last summer, when the Chimperor was still president. So much for Bushism poisoning the city’s chances.

Bush was President when Chicago won one of the coveted top spots. Maybe the IOC didn’t realize it at the time.

Hello Allahpundit,
It is ok to blame Bush for everything. I mean even conservatives like Glenn Beck call Bush a fascist. So it is totally alright.

Sadly, it probably won’t be the last thing started on Bush’s watch that will then fall apart on Obama’s.
aikidoka on October 4, 2009 at 7:23 PM
Nobody ever accused the Chicago (anyone) of winning national or even regional IQ tests. All you have to do is look at what they keep doing to themselves in elections and you pretty much have the situation outlined.
Of course though, it’s Bush’s fault an asteroid killed off the dinosaurs, and it’ll be his fault the sun goes red giant a few billion years from now too.

Sorry, but Obama owns this. And Chicago and America are better off for this “loss” since it means the Daley machine will be denied billions in graft.

HornetSting on October 4, 2009 at 7:26 PM
Yeah, like “the people” in those countries have better access to information about American than “the leaders”. Given the state of freedom of the press in most of the world, I’m guessing “the people” think whatever “the leaders” want them to think about America. For someone who “travels a lot”, she sure doesn’t seem to understand the political dynamics of most of the world.

So now Jesse Jackson speaks for the world? “The world had a bad taste… The world feels better…”
I’ll repeat my haiku from the Obamatuerism thread where I theorize someone else carries the blame:
It was Oprah’s fault
She is too flabby to win
The respect of the world
kooly on October 4, 2009 at 7:33 PM

conservative pilgrim on October 4, 2009 at 7:33 PM
President Bush would never have gone to the IOC to plead the case for the Americans to get their favored city. He would have stayed stateside and taken care of business at hand-like a war that needs to be won and a General who needs to have a face to face meeting that lasts longer than 25 minutes.
Nice trying lefties-blaming Bush once again.
texasconserv on October 4, 2009 at 7:34 PM
Any reason why these imbeciles are still quoted? Good grief. It’s not even sane, let alone remotely plausible.
I’m world weary. Who’s with me?
Diane on October 4, 2009 at 7:34 PM
….And yet, they still denied the ‘won’?
HornetSting on October 4, 2009 at 7:35 PM
Yeah. The world hated the US so much they couldn’t resist NOT inviting us to China in 2008 to kick the bloody blue-blazes out of them.
And the IOC so hates Bush they have also refused to have the same Olympic team who lives in the same country as teh Evil Booosh from coming to the 2012 and the 2016 Olympics.
The IOC also sooo hates teh Booosh that they kept Chicago around till the last selection day, just to rub things in his eye…
So if this was done to hurt Bush, at the expense of Chicago – how does that hurt Bush again? There doesn’t seem like there is too much carping about HOW this really hurts Bush opposed to making Obama look like a fool.
If the IOC DID do this to hurt Bush at the expense of the entire country, what does and should that tell us about the IOC and the rest of the world? If it’s me, then the next time there is a tsunami, the World can call the IOC for help. I’m sure they’d be glad to lend a hand…
Hmmmm.
*later…*
I’VE GOT IT!
Bush decided, in his conspiratorially manic genius NOT to implement his plans to turn the US into a police state at the last moment by seizing power and suspending elections knowing this day would come. Bush KNEW Obama would win the election and calculated, in his evilly-geniusy way (advised by Darth Cheney on the evil-er aspects of this plan, of course) correctly, that the ONE WAY he could display his true Hitler-like persona, was to let the worlds hatred for HIM sway their voting against Chicago, specifically to give Obama a defeat.

I’m losing track… is Chicago better off that it lost or is it Bush’s fault that Chicago didn’t get what would have been a great day for America?
The lefties need to get their story straight.
PS… as the “Shouldn’t BHO have been rooting for Brazil?” thread posits… I find it comical that the world event in which we scream for our nation to win, win, win so our national anthem may be played and our flag raised higher than all other nations’ flags is supposed to represent the world coming together as one.
