Video: John Fund on grassroots activism

posted at 6:06 pm on October 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

As always, John Fund has a great take on the Defending the American Dream Summit. I caught up with John when he dropped by the blogger row area and asked him about his impressions of the event, and the impact of grassroots activism on the 2010 election. John says he’s more focused on the 2009 elections in New Jersey and Virginia, and thinks they will serve not only as a harbinger of 2010 but also a potential warning to Blue Dog Democrats on health care and cap-and-trade legislation:

I should add…. the women in this Country are organized, networked and we are ready to take the Country back. McCain is in our cross-hairs to take out of office. Too bad Goober isn’t up for re-election, but we have great memories.

suzyk on October 3, 2009 at 6:14 PM

thats not frum. That is john Fund who is a GREAT WS journal writer. Also helped expose acorn.

Awesomeness Ed! I’ve been getting the Tea Party ready for canvassing this month. OMG these people have to GO DOWN!

Yellowdog12 on October 3, 2009 at 6:18 PM

Everyone will be watching the governors’ races in Virginia and New Jersey — the question is, will anyone be watching for rank democrat cheating, cuz it’s going to be massive. I assume NJ’s secretary of state is a demo-cheat, but anyone know about Virginia’s?

Rational Thought on October 3, 2009 at 6:25 PM

Ohhhh… I misread. I’m watching college football and listening to the Twins v. Kansas City.

We are still organized and ready to out a bunch of people tho.

suzyk on October 3, 2009 at 6:25 PM

Except that Obama wants Reid and Pelosi to ram through Obamacare by November 1, before those elections, for exactly this reason.

Wethal on October 3, 2009 at 6:27 PM

Ed, I wish that you had asked John Fund about ACORN and similarly funded organizations and their role in voting corruption. Fund has been pushing for years to have transparent accountability in our national elections. He has written several commentaries suggesting what the problems are and some possible solutions to address them.

See post at Redstate. Head of VA Board of Elections (Kaine appointee), doesn’t think she legally has to mail absentee ballots to military in time for them to be returned and counted.

Glad to see John Fund at this meeting. I also like his reference to the “Lame” Stream Media. Good job, Ed.

That’s nice. How anyone with the tiniest shred of decency can be a member of the democrat party is an absolute mystery to me.

Ed….

Seven Percent Solution on October 3, 2009 at 7:42 PM

Well, its only anecdotal, but I was at a city fair today in VA and the Repubs had three large tables, with stickers, balloons, and yard signs on the main drag.

The Demos had a small table at the end of a side street. (snicker) Folks walking around displaying political stickers were about 2/3 repub and 1/3 demo.

Plus, after all the WaPo attacks and a 5 point loss by McDonnell his polling seems to be on the upswing again and Deeds is out of fodder.

Fingers crossed

This is completely anecdotal but, living here in Virginia, it seems as if Deeds is losing. He’s latched on to a Master’s thesis of McDonnell from decades ago and refuses to discuss the pressing issues of 2009. Each and every ad is a personal attack instead of a campaign statement. No reason to vote for Deeds other than the fact he isn’t McDonnell. Deeds has no solutions so he’s trash talking.

Along the same lines. I’m a recent resident of Virginia and have an Alexandria address. I got not one but two mailings a day apart from the VA GOP urging me to register and vote for McDonnell. With Jim Moran in Congress, this is not fertile ground for the GOP. I’m hoping my vote will help not only in 2009 but to finally rid the Congress of the child-beater who represents this district in Congress come 2010.

I think he would have if Daggett wasn’t running as an Independent. He’s going to split the Republican vote and sadly, Corzine will be re-elected.

I live in Fredericksburg and I have to say if Deed’s campaign here is any indicator no one’s even going to know who he is on election day. His commercials here are so lame they’re almost pitiable. I’d feel some sympathy for him if he didn’t have a (d) after his name.

When is election day?

andy85719 on October 3, 2009 at 9:03 PM

Out here in the Shenandoah Valley I have only seen one sign for Deeds and no radio commercials. The Deeds sign is huge, but that family is a known, rich Democrat.
On a trip back from Georgia, we did see a bunch of Deeds’ signs near Roanoke, but that was it. Most were McDonnell signs.

BetseyRoss on October 3, 2009 at 9:05 PM

People shouldn’t rely too much on signs. We did that in 2008 and we were wrong. Besides, the dead people and Disney characters don’t don’t have time to purchase signs.

andy85719 on October 3, 2009 at 9:07 PM

IrishEi on October 3, 2009 at 8:09 PM

I think you are spot on with that prediction Irish. Corzine’s poll numbers have stayed pretty much the same since the begining of the race but Christe seems to be losing some support to Dagget. Corzine is a pathetic govenor but i fear he may win it with a 40% share or something close to that. Christe should have started his campaign with a focus on taxes but he has all but relinquished that to Dagget. Long story short, 4 more years of BS and higher taxes coming out of Trenton.

Tru dat. Disgusting. Why half of America is not homeschooling right now is beyond me.

Firefly_76 on October 3, 2009 at 10:09 PM

I am hoping the VA governor election is a blowout for McDonnell.

Currently Rasmussen poll has McDonnell up by 9.
51% McDonnell, 42% Deeds

In an earlier contest between McDonnell and Deeds, McDonnell won by a very slim margin.

If Republicans win strong in VA, and win any way at all in NJ, that will get a lot of blue dog attention.

Kjeil: Totally married for 36 years. I LOVE FOOTBALL and BASEBALL. Twins won. Tigers Lost. Yoo Hoo. Tomorrow is the big day. Auburn is winning. Obviously, I live in Alabama. Went to D.C. for the March and I’m totally involved with women all over this Country to take the Country back. We will only save the Republican’s bacon once and kick the RINO’s out. Bye bye McCain.

I thought I had quite a tolerance for filth, but this Jennings character is putrid . I was wrong when I attributed Obama regime’s agenda to marxism. This WH is psychopathic, sociopathic and downright evil.

Ed:

I respect your work, I admire John Fund’s analysis, but one suggestion please: Next time, pack a tripod or at least find a tall stack of books. Thank you.

Also, I like how John sounded almost Wallace Shawn-like at the end saying, “They [Chicagoans] didn’t want it!” in a tone reminiscent of “Never gamble with a Sicilian when DEATH is on the line!”

Captain Scarlet on October 4, 2009 at 3:55 AM

For the record, Ed did pack a tripod, but didn’t bring it down to Bloggers’ Row. The Flip Cam is not an easy thing to keep steady.
