Video: Jim DeMint at Defending the Dream Summit

I had a brief moment to talk with Senator Jim DeMint a few minutes after our speeches at the Defending the Dream Summit in the very noisy Bloggers Row area, where other events got piped into the room at a loud volume. Senator DeMint did his best to overcome the noise, and we did get three good minutes before he had to leave for the airport:

DeMint is one of the great stalwarts on the Hill. He is the anchor of the Senate and I thank G-d every day that DeMint is there. There are very defenders of America left and DeMint carries a huge burden.

That is what class looks like. Odumbass should take a lesson.

Rock on Ed, you are one great American… Oh and by the way, I am pimping tough for a corner office with a view in the Green Room between Stacy McCain and Dr. Zero… If you hadn’t heard… lol…lol…lol… ;)

Good job, Ed. DeMint is a good guy and I would love to see him run for President in 2012. In the mean time, we need more guys like him in the Senate.

But, but, but I thought Hot Air was just a blog. Shouldn’t you be in your basement, clad in pajamas, instead of out doing actual reporting?

I’ll take a basement office in the Green Room, dorian.

Ed has a lot more patience with the web than I do. I finally gave up trying to upload Ed’s speech from this morning. One of us should have it YouTubed by tomorrow morning.

Why the hyphenated God? If you’re going to invoke his name, you should use the whole thing. Hyphenating it is childish.

mrpeabody on October 3, 2009 at 3:47 PM

Jim DeMint is one of the rare few honorable men in Congress. Everything he does, everything he says, is in service to what this country should be, needs to be, was conceived to be. We are so lucky to have him standing up for us!

The spelling G-d is typical of Jewish people, who feel it is disrespectful to utter or write God’s name in full. So no, they shouldn’t use the whole thing.

califcon on October 3, 2009 at 3:54 PM

Indeed. He’s one of the reasons I wince when I hear someone, even like Beck from time to time, say that we need to “throw ‘em all out.”

Yes, I wish we could clone DeMint, but there’s a number of others in both chambers that I would consider honorable and well principled.

Do I wish there were more? Hell yeah, and that’s what we’ve all gotta work on…

Beginning in the 2010 primaries.

Thanks, Ed, for sharing your interview.

Jim DeMint is definitely a bright light against the dim bulbs of McCain, gramnesty et.al.Over and above his great stands he actually finds microphones. We would be lost without him in the Senate. He should be “Mr. Leader” in 2011.The rest of them just don’t get the take no prisoners approach of the left.

J.J. Sefton on October 3, 2009 at 3:55 PM

You’re righter than rain. But I would add that this third party folly, which you so aptly call it, will doom us far than into the wilderness.

No, it will doom the entire country to an abyss from which there will be no escape. We are nearing the point of no return, and I’m afraid we have little time for foolish games a la Perot.

This is a two-party country, conservative and liberal. Our job is to make sure that we populate the Republican Party, from bottom to top, with true conservatives.

In so doing, we can turn the plane around. Time is of the essence.

I totally agree. DeMint looks for what is best, meaning conservatism. He broke against the NRSC to support Toomey and Rubio. He’s an honorable man.

cubachi on October 3, 2009 at 4:34 PM

You folks act like DeMint is the only honest man in the senate. What about Coburn and Inhofe? You are fools that just want to indiscriminately get rid of everyone because all (insert party affiliation here) are crooks and do not represent us. Many on both sides honestly believe differently than you, but that does not make them corrupt crooks. The fact that those that paint with that broad brush are fools, makes me less likely to accept their arguments. It is also insulting to conflate upstanding politicians with the likes of Murtha, Reed, Pelosi, Kennedy, Spector, Boxer, etc.

Old Country Boy on October 3, 2009 at 4:42 PM

OCB, I don’t think anyone here would exclude Coburn and Inhofe from the “honorable man” short list. But it IS a very short list. I am hoping to see Marco Rubio on it, too, in the very near future. The point is that these folks are the exception, not the rule. And our country is at the breaking point. Which is why I’m one of the people who now supports real patriots, real conservatives, regardless of location. As opposed to sending the RNC a single dime, until they get with that program.

Sen DeMint is a great conservative and if you trust his judgment (I do) you’ll also remember that he was a strong supporter of Mitt Romney who is my pick for 2012. I only wish he wouldn’t have been “jumped in the alley” in the primaries to allow many in the latter part of the 2/3 of the US to have had the chance to vote for him. I’d love to see a Mitt/Palin combo or how about Mitt/Liz Cheney?? prepping her for a 2020 run?

2) “Me thinks thou doest protest too much!”

LEBA – I say again – The fact that those who paint with that broad brush are fools, makes me less likely to accept their arguments. You just demonstrated my point. And again you don’t understand bulleting and numbering. How do you go from a)… to 2)…?

Your paraphrasing item 2) makes no sense in this application. Finally, I don’t have to be careful who I call a fool. If you are one, you will be offended and I don’t care, If you aren’t one, you won’t be. But if you would like my second to call on yours …?

Old Country Boy on October 3, 2009 at 6:20 PM

Jim DeMint is what our forefathers had in mind re love of country, protection of our freedoms, fiscal common sense, and abiding by the Constitution.

Jim DeMint would be an excellent Majority Leader in the Senate. We need more of his kind in Congress. Qualities such as his would bring back respect and dignity to our legislative body.

I heart Jim DeMint.

onlineanalyst on October 3, 2009 at 7:10 PM

Senator Demint is a strong voice for conservatism on the Hill and he lives out his principles. He is one of the few who have taken an active interest in Honduras and is there now on a fact-finding mission despite the attempts of the Obama administration and John Kerry to block his travel. He is definitely one of the good guys.

Thanks for the info re Honduras, inmypajamas. So DeMint was able to override the petty Kerry objections? Terrific.

Ed, great as always. Demint did a great job too.

The truth is out there.

jaime on October 3, 2009 at 8:36 PM

Demint might be a good Conservative….but….

He comes across as a ‘get-along’ Conservative. But I’m not impressed with anyone in D.C. except that moment when Joe Wilson spoke truth to power in the Congressional Joint Session. Even though Wilson had to apologize and got crucified for questioning our American Jesus he robbed Obama of his 3 days of fawning media coverage….and has been the ONLY GOP MEMBER OF CONGRESS to my knowledge to show some stones.

Demint…..if you’re not railing against Obamacare based on PRINCIPLES you’re just more Beltway Hot Air.

PappyD61 on October 3, 2009 at 9:23 PM

If DeMint, Palin, and Huckster linked arms we could move the world.

HondaV65 on October 3, 2009 at 9:31 PM

PappyD61: Jim DeMint is the very antithesis of “get-along” and I hope you will check out his record at On the Issues website.

Senator DeMint is a rock-solid conservative. Joe Wilson, on the other hand, is much more wishy-washy, as much as I admired his little outburst. I believe he also voted for the TARP and stimulus bills. You can check him out on the same website.

califcon on October 3, 2009 at 10:53 PM

Jim DeMint abides the courtesy of the Senate, but apart from that, I don’t know what marks him as go-along.

Religious debate roils Capitol Visitor Center
Protests by conservative lawmakers led architects to promise to add “In God We Trust” as the national motto and to engrave the Pledge of Allegiance in the new $621 million Capitol Visitor Center.
By James Rosen

WASHINGTON — Protests by conservative lawmakers led architects to promise to add “In God We Trust” as the national motto and to engrave the Pledge of Allegiance in the new $621 million Capitol Visitor Center.

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., had threatened to delay Tuesday’s opening of the marble-and-stone center that took seven years to build at triple the original cost.

But some last-minute fixes allowed hundreds of visitors to get their first look at the underground museum — and now the first stop for people touring the Capitol — as it opened three years late and $360 million over budget.

A 186-foot marble wall holds display cases that document the nation’s milestones and key decisions in Congress. Visitors will find President Kennedy’s 1961 speech calling for the nation to send a man to the moon, Thomas Jefferson’s 1803 letter urging Congress to pay for the Lewis and Clark Expedition and James Madison’s notes for the Constitution.

At a dedication ceremony for the center, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the inclusive nature of the center’s main space, called Emancipation Hall in part because slaves helped build the Capitol.

After taking a tour of the center in September with Steven Ayers, the architect who oversaw its completion, DeMint correctly noted that it had erroneously described “E. Pluribus Unum” — Latin for “from many, one” — as the national motto rather than “In God We Trust.” Despite winning a months-long battle to highlight the importance of religion in U.S. life, DeMint was not satisfied Tuesday, saying the center still misrepresents American history by downplaying the faith of the founding fathers and other prominent figures. The center’s “most prominent display proclaims faith not in God, but in government,” he noted.

DeMint, rated the most conservative senator by several think tanks and advocacy groups, also protested an engraved statement near the center’s entrance: “We have built no temple but the Capitol. We consult no common oracle but the Constitution.”

That quote was uttered by Rufus Choate, a Massachusetts lawyer who represented his state in the House in the 1830s and in the Senate the decade after. GOP Sens. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Roger Wicker of Mississippi, along with Republican Rep. Randy Forbes of Virginia, joined DeMint in the protest.

For now, “Our Nation’s Motto” has been plastered over so that it no longer describes “E Pluribus Unum.” That phrase is on a ribbon over an eagle on the official seal of the United States.

That was not the act of a wallflower eager to curry favor.

Yes, I am. I’m not all that observant, though I am very respectful (and proud) of the religious ideas and traditions. I just feel more comfortable with the hyphenated form. I do, however, cut and paste others’ comments without the hyphens, which is not technically “kosher” :)

It’s time for Republican congressmen to take a stand on what they believe. They need to state if they’re for McCain’s GOP, or DeMint’s GOP. Simple as that. THEN we get the brooms out.

davecatbone on October 4, 2009 at 8:17 AM

Demint……

By Get-along I mean that is the way he comes across (my apologies for not making that clear earlier). He might be a 90% ACU Conservative but his demeanor is very gentle, non-threatening, very gentlemanly, very laidback. I would not call him charismatic AT ALL. He would be a great loyal member of the Parliament so-to-speak but Leader of the Party potential? Sorry, I don’t see it.

There are only two Potential party leaders that I can see right now on the GOP and that’s Mitt and High Heels. The rest?……great Cabinet Secretaries but that’s it.

But hey what do I know I’m just an old Geezer….hince the name. :-)

PappyD61 on October 4, 2009 at 10:21 AM

hence….not hince.
