Quotes of the day

posted at 9:48 pm on October 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

“‘The intelligence that we had from the U.S. Olympic Committee and Chicago bid team was that it was very close and therefore well worth our efforts,’ said Valerie Jarrett, a senior White House advisor. ‘The message was that … a personal appeal from the president would make a huge difference.’”

***
“To hear Obama insiders discuss it, the president was just too competitive not to make the trip. ‘Whether we tried or not, we owned it,’ said one senior White House aide. ‘But you know how competitive he is. If we got a shot, he wanted to take it. The Chicago folks definitely made it known that they wanted him to come. But the decision was his. He felt if he could go and make the case and promote the country and Chicago, he was going to do it.’…

Within a week, that position was beginning to change as Mayor Daley pressed his case for a presidential pitch, which would put the country’s leader alongside his global counterparts. But according to White House officials, there were two factors even more important than the influence of Daley: the White House was already engaged, and the president himself liked the sporting challenge.”

***
“Arrogance. Good ol’ American arrogance.

Instead of dedicating three days and nights working the IOC members, as we hear Tony Blair did for London in its successful bid for 2012, President Obama figured all he had to do was show up for a few minutes here at Bella Center after an all-night flight on Air Force One.

He had normally blasé media types pressing their noses against the windows of this sleek convention center just to get a glimpse of him stepping into his flown-in Cadillac. His very presence shook down the tight schedule the IOC usually likes to keep. His very name peppered the cacophony of unfamiliar languages all over town with little hints of recognition.

But Obama was long gone by the time his ripple factor had flattened out.”

***
“Here’s what I would like to talk about in all this: The First Lady and her husband made terrible presentations to the IOC! In retrospect, it makes complete sense that they got the boot in Round 1.”

***

Hey, Hawk. Someone needs to compensate for Hannity being nice to liberals on his show.
I’ll tell you, sometimes, when Hannity has some stupid liberal on the phone, and talks nice to them, I just go into a rage and want to reach through the radio and rip their lungs off.
Levin pretty much does that for me.
“Gwan! Get outta here!”

Lanceman on October 3, 2009 at 11:14 PM

Obama and Michelle O. should have done a three-legged race into the IOC Hall to show how really plucked up they were.

profitsbeard on October 3, 2009 at 11:15 PM

For someone who is supposed to be such an inspiring and brilliant orator, this whole statement is just stupid! And the academia elites question Sarah Palin’s intellect!

texgal on October 3, 2009 at 11:00 PM

I’ve said repeatedly that Barry is the classic hothouse genius whose met with acclaim and acceptance for marginal performance his entire life. He’s reasonably articulate (and clean too! – Biden) and he knows enough about Kant, Hegel and Camus to talk a good game. (Frankly, you don’t have to know too much to pull this off, since most Lefties can only recognize the names.) Oh, and did you hear he’s half black?!!

These qualifications will cause tingles to run up legs all over academia and the Left in general, and that’s how Barry rose in political society at such a stratospheric rate without accomplishing a single thing of substance. The guy didn’t even write his own autobiography, and probably couldn’t have turned out anything that wasn’t hackneyed sophomoric hash.

Now he’s in a job where he can’t fake it, and he’s in the bright glare of publicity 24/7. The slew of gaffes and errors he’s made so far only highlight the fact that he is in waaaay over his head. It will only get worse.

The big question? How will Barry handle it when his ineptitude becomes so patent that event the MSM can’t avoid commenting on it any longer? That’s starting to happen, and the possibilities are quite scary.

Cicero43 on October 3, 2009 at 11:15 PM

Michelle looks arrogantly dorkey and is classless, and spoke a bunch of nonsense. Both spoke about “I, me, us”. Scrooom ‘em. They deserve this. Pillow talk must be somethin’ in the WH.

Shouldn’t Jug-eared Jesus, the uncontested King of Apoligies, be offering the city of Chicago a little bitty “I’m sorry I got your hopes up for no good reason, and then completely dropped the ball.”?

Another apology is in order to the rest of the American people for embarrassing us all with his tone-deaf display of towering hubris, especially after repeatedly scolding the United States for not being humble enough on the world stage.

Yes He Should.

For the first time in my adult life, I am mortified by our President’s lack of decorum and humility.

Levin is great.

How easy it is to despise the pampered pair and rejoice in their humiliation at the royal ball.
They are like the evil characters in a fairy tale.
He, the narcissistic prince who plots the demise of his own kingdom.
And she, the princess who has been told by her handmaidens all her life that she has unbounded wit and beauty, but knows in her dark heart that she is but an ugly stepsister.

And yet the elites, living in their own ghetto, are wailing and bemoaning about Palin using a ghost writer. Oh, and one of those unintelligent Christian, evangelicals writers, at that. Never mind that Hussein’s Dreams not only wasn’t written by him, but was written by a radical terrorist. The double standard is impalpable to them.

It is one thing to not want people to know who your ghost writer is. It is quite another to take credit for work you didn’t even produce!

I thought I read that the Obama’a didn’t stick around for the formal announcement. If this is true, how undiplomatic. Wouldn’t the polite and correct thing to do be to warmly congratulate the Rio delegation for their triumph and graciously accept defeat right there on the spot? Every time they go out, they embarrass me to death.

Jarrett didn’t mention the State Department, either. I got to think on this one. Very interesting.

My feeling had been that Obama and his team think their politics is superior to anyone else’s. Further, I think they got some good advice but ignored it because of this attitude about their way of doing things.

I wish that we could get some psychologist on here and give an opinion on these two, ’cause I think it is rare indeed, to have a man and a wife, who both fabricate and prevaricate to the extent of the Obamas’. Is it the common ground that drew them to each other? Would they really trust one another, knowing the lies that can spew out of their mouths to the world, and then think that they are honest and trustworthy to each other?

The few times I’ve bothered to listen look at, or listen to either of them, I’ve noticed that if Michelle was around, she would keep an eagle’s eye on her husband. So intense was the stare, that you could see that she was trying very hard to telepathically get him to get through his speeches without screwing up.

Is she the brawn and the brains in this presidency? I don’t know, she doesn’t seem that bright either, only seethes with a brewing hatred of the world. No Eleanor Roosevelt, but then that marriage was suspect, too.

As we move forward in the coming weeks, I understand that members of Congress from both parties will want to engage in a vigorous debate and contribute their own ideas. And I welcome those contributions. I welcome any sincere attempts to improve legislation before it reaches my desk. But what I will not accept are attempts to stall, or drag our feet. I will not accept partisan efforts to block reform at any cost.

hillbillyjim on October 4, 2009 at 12:19 AM

Me, too. What’s worse is that he hasn’t been impeached from about the second week of Feb. BUT we keep getting glee-club updates on his brilliance and awesomeness!

I don’t care if I’m the last person on earth who has complete and total contempt for the the man, I would not walk across an alleyway to even try to get a glimpse of this Obama person. He is not even Hollywood bad or worthy.
And that’s a difficult standard to flunk.

Work-wise: I could feature him on some island, such as Jamaica,
in some bamboo shack, mixing up pina coladas as the third in line bartender manager because, although congenial, always forgets to re-order the coconuts and cocktail umbrellas, PLUS he has a very difficult time making change.

betsyz on October 4, 2009 at 1:25 AM

Is there any way we can recall the POTUS, if he is so shameless as to not resign ? Like we did in CA?

macncheez on October 4, 2009 at 1:29 AM

I thought I read that the Obama’a didn’t stick around for the formal announcement. If this is true, how undiplomatic. Wouldn’t the polite and correct thing to do be to warmly congratulate the Rio delegation for their triumph and graciously accept defeat right there on the spot? Every time they go out, they embarrass me to death.

betsyz on October 3, 2009 at 11:39 PM

But Betsy,

The problem with that is that Obama couldn’t even handle that without him trying to make even that about himself.

He MUST be the center of everything.

Sapwolf on October 4, 2009 at 1:38 AM

“Arrogance. Good ol’ American arrogance.

Not American arrogance. Just Obama transnational arrogance.

Connie on October 4, 2009 at 1:45 AM

So what exactly is he going to do about it?

lowandslow on October 4, 2009 at 1:17 AM

Oh the horror. He’ll probably threaten to give another speech.

That’ll show’em.

hillbillyjim on October 4, 2009 at 1:55 AM

I had not watched the speeches by the Obamas before.

I now really wish I had not.

For smart people they really did condescend horrifically to their audience.

Anders on October 4, 2009 at 2:11 AM

Jarrett also predicted that after Michelle’s speech “there wouldn’t be a dry eye in the house.”

Get a grip! You can hear two, three people clapping after that over the top rehash of her stump speech.

Face it, they need Acorn to win anything.

PattyJ on October 4, 2009 at 2:24 AM

We figured out Michelle would have been 20 years old when she “sat on her dad’s lap and watched Carl Lewis win!”
What’s up with that?

Neither Mishell nor Barack said anything about the city of Chicago itself just “I..I…I” and “me…me…me…”

Of course, they forgot to mention the murder of black teens going on in the streets of Chicago while they were talking, too.

Allahpundit,

Why are you quoting without attribution Ron Flatter’s piece in Real Clear Sports, “Arrogance Dooms Olympic Dream”?
Stepan on October 4, 2009 at 1:24 AM

It is attributed. You need to review the post before you start making accusations.

elduende on October 4, 2009 at 2:38 AM

America, this Olympic thing may take a while.

…And?

Hawkins1701 on October 4, 2009 at 2:51 AM

lanceman, it can’t be that this is the first time you noticed how massive her derrière is? (wonder if those vegetables from the WH garden are to blame :-)… why do you think the tabloids focus obsessively on her arms, to distract from the largesse of her rear…it’s all spin with this admin :-) including the first dudesse’s ‘end’ :-)

Stepan on October 4, 2009 at 1:24 AM

Perhaps you are new here, and don’t understand how the every-night “Quotes of the Day” works. Each quote (and there may be several in the post; the separate quotes are delineated by asterisks) contains a link to the article from which it is drawn. The attribution is never direct, but is indirect via the link.

The intent is for you to guess who wrote the quote, and then click the link to learn whether you were right or wrong.

The tone of your accusation is one of plagiarism. Such is far from the mind in “Quotes of the Day”, given its format.

There are so many on point posts on this thread I’m at a loss. I especially like “Jug eared Jesus” Ha, ha.
I detest these people in the white house more than any prior occupants, but some of you post with more eloquence and humor than I could. Thanks

There a burden of intellectual superficiality with with Barack Obama, a man who has shown remarkable poise and oratory talents when he is properly handled, but wobbles when put in the hot seat without his notes.

There’s just so many ways to write that.

Kini on October 4, 2009 at 4:36 AM

It certainly did make a huge difference. Just not in the way they’d hoped.

Jim Treacher on October 4, 2009 at 5:50 AM

Only an idiot would of thought that just being a President of the US, and giving speeches with a first lady, was going to work. With this President, he does not understand the idea of setting precedents.
The Olympic Committee ended up doing the only thing they really could do, vote Chicago in at DEAD LAST, because Obama was trying to set a precedent that a leader of a country, could just hop on a plane at the last minute, after years of supposed meetings and negotiations, and with a quick speech or two, effect a committees decision. There’s NO WAY they could allow that to happen.

Kini on October 4, 2009 at 6:25 AM

The world is laughing at the arrogant one.

The White House must have believed that just by Michelle givingher teary-eyed speech about (being 20 years old and) sitting on her father´s lap watching Carl Lewis or hearing the golden, magical voice of the worldly Barack (with a father from Kenya and B. himself spent his childhood in Indonesia) would sway the IOC jury to give the Olympics not to Chicago, not to the USA, but rather to Obama.

A huge bucket of cold water in the face for the One. The first of many to come.

albill on October 4, 2009 at 6:27 AM

One good thing, it’s great to get them lout of the country. Next time they go, let’s move the country so they can’t find us.

Jeff from WI on October 4, 2009 at 6:34 AM

He felt if he could go and make the case and promote sell the country and Chicago, he was going to do it.’…

Fixed it for them, seeling the country, literally.

That’ll show’em.

hillbillyjim on October 4, 2009 at 1:55 AM

Indeed, hbj, again, and again…what a dummy he and they are, media too.

It certainly did make a huge difference. Just not in the way they’d hoped.

Jim Treacher on October 4, 2009 at 5:50 AM

Arrogant dummies never get it. On the “intelligence they had”, if they’d have smarts they’d have known. If he and Michelle wouldn’t have held those horrid speeches, with all those “look at us, see how far we’ve come? we are deserving” Chicago would have come in 2nd or 3rd. The speeches nailed the initial BIG finger. They can spin this all they want – this was not GWB’s fault. It’s all on video, plain to see for those weith eyes.

The others, just open yours before your country and your children are destroyed. If the beginnig isn’t obvious to you, the middle will make it irreversible.

Schadenfreude on October 4, 2009 at 7:24 AM

I’m worried that conservatives will overplay this. Did Obama come off looking like a naive rookie? yes. Did he handle it all wrong? yes. Is there a case to be made that Obama and his wife injecting themselves into the Olympics at the last minute might have cost Chicago its chance to get the Olympics? yes. As a rule I would say that its not wrong for the President to lobby for the Olympics. I think Obama did it to help his cronies in Chicago and distract from his problems with the war and the falling jobs numbers. It didn’t’ work out for him. Conservatives should use this as an example of Obama’s inability to lead due to his inexperience as a real leader as well as his over-active ego to make everything about him, but I don’t think they should rub the dems faces in it. Most people don’t think there is anything wrong with the President lobbying for the Olympics to come to America including myself. We shouldn’t argue that he shouldn’t have tried but rather that he blew it.
