Quotes of the day

posted at 9:48 pm on October 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

“‘The intelligence that we had from the U.S. Olympic Committee and Chicago bid team was that it was very close and therefore well worth our efforts,’ said Valerie Jarrett, a senior White House advisor. ‘The message was that … a personal appeal from the president would make a huge difference.’”

***
“To hear Obama insiders discuss it, the president was just too competitive not to make the trip. ‘Whether we tried or not, we owned it,’ said one senior White House aide. ‘But you know how competitive he is. If we got a shot, he wanted to take it. The Chicago folks definitely made it known that they wanted him to come. But the decision was his. He felt if he could go and make the case and promote the country and Chicago, he was going to do it.’…

Within a week, that position was beginning to change as Mayor Daley pressed his case for a presidential pitch, which would put the country’s leader alongside his global counterparts. But according to White House officials, there were two factors even more important than the influence of Daley: the White House was already engaged, and the president himself liked the sporting challenge.”

***
“Arrogance. Good ol’ American arrogance.

Instead of dedicating three days and nights working the IOC members, as we hear Tony Blair did for London in its successful bid for 2012, President Obama figured all he had to do was show up for a few minutes here at Bella Center after an all-night flight on Air Force One.

He had normally blasé media types pressing their noses against the windows of this sleek convention center just to get a glimpse of him stepping into his flown-in Cadillac. His very presence shook down the tight schedule the IOC usually likes to keep. His very name peppered the cacophony of unfamiliar languages all over town with little hints of recognition.

But Obama was long gone by the time his ripple factor had flattened out.”

***
“Here’s what I would like to talk about in all this: The First Lady and her husband made terrible presentations to the IOC! In retrospect, it makes complete sense that they got the boot in Round 1.”

Hmm how about if Palin makes a push for Anchorage,Alaska for the next available winter Olympics?Or is Alaska just too far from everything to even be remotely possible?

I have two things to say about this Olympic fiasco:

1) The Precedent is a stupid dork. Period.

2) It is un-American for the federal government to be treating the US as a team to compete in this pathetic gloablist Olympics. We are individualists and the tradition of the US has been to let cities and states do whatever lobbying they want to do for the olympics, but the fedearl government never moves on something so inconsequential, and certainly not the White House, personally.

This whole pathetic scene was so un-American, from start to finish, that only an Indonesian dork could even think of doing it.

Odumbass wouldn’t know competition if he it slapped his fugly ass wife in the snoot.
He has been handed everything in his life.
Typical dimocrap. They would rather climb a tree to tell a lie, than stand flat footed and tell the truth.

OldEnglish on October 3, 2009 at 9:58 PM

All afternoon CNN was having special programs on crime in Chicago in an attempt, subtly of course, to take the heat off the arrogant one and blame the loss of the Olympics on Chicago teen age crime. Now they are all under the bus.

I was in a bar and couldn’t avoid it. Their sudden interest in teen crime in Chicago was rather disgusting.

Dhuka on October 3, 2009 at 9:58 PM

The “sacrifice” part of Mrs. Obama’s speech sounded wrong the minute she said it. Regardless of how many times a country host’s the Olympics it should be treated as an honor. These folks are tone deaf. I would have liked the U.S. to win but I have to admit that it didn’t bother me to see the President get rebuffed. But I am sure he has already rationalized it and moved on, that ego knows no bounds.

Cindy Munford on October 3, 2009 at 10:08 PM

I don’t know if this is how it went down but here is a good scenario…

There were so many people close to the president and first lady that would have made a lot of money if Chicago got the Olympics… those people could have been fed bad info and they could have put a lot of pressure on Obama… plus he wanted to get out of town during the bad jobs figures, etc… Axelrod should have been smarter than this… from a PR standpoint, he should have had the Obama-McCrystal meeting the main focal point…

Exactly. The natural world is about to close in on the US. We have been left exposed and undefended – on purpose by the moron left and their imbecilic Precedent – and the animals of the world are just assessing the situation before they come in to start feeding on us. And what they will do to the rest of the world, that we used to maintain order for … whoa, boy. The US has been put in a position like the characters of the movie, “Open Water”. It’s only a matter of time before nature goes for the kill.

Frankly, I couldn’t care less if people are laughing at us – I don’t really care what they think – but it is what the thoughts in the Kremlin and the halls of power in Beijing and the arab/persian/muslim world that concern me. They are licking their lips trying to figure out which parts of the world they want. It will be ugly.

progressoverpeace on October 3, 2009 at 10:25 PM

d1carter on October 3, 2009 at 10:16 PM

I tend to think he is killing his own reputation and cause. If the IOC see through him, that may suggest the rest of the world sees through him. The world also understands “America” better than our own President.

It may be much the same way we saw the Iranian people separate from their leaders last summer.

America will suffer the effects of this man, but Americans will remain stronger than ever before!

CWforFreedom on October 3, 2009 at 10:31 PM

Several weeks ago, he was in the Oval Office on the phone with Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley. The mayor wanted him to make the trip. The president told him that he genuinely wanted to go, but was worried about his workload.

“He said, ‘I don’t want to make a commitment that I can’t keep,’ ” according to Axelrod, who was in the room. ” ‘So I’m not going to make any final decisions and will keep this open.’ ”

So, as many of us suspected Pinnochio’s strings were pulled by Daley, the guy who began looking for and grooming a President the day he lost the Florida 2000 recount. Anyone remember Daley callin Al Gore in his limo and telling him to unconcede, that they count count a few dead people, a couple hangin chads, reject the military ballots and win this thing yet?
Second paragraph illustrates Pinnochio’s inability to take a decision.
Pinnochio’s puppet masters cannot be happy at his inability to deliver the payoff to the Chicago crime syndicate and the mob rewards serious misdeeds with serious consequences.

Stay away from grassy knolls Pinnochio!

So that’s the line now? Ogabe is an insatiable competitor and that’s why he risked the credibility of the office of the President of the United States on this?

Well then …

Perhaps he should have made a legitimate appeal. For such a competitor – his game sucks. He gave a speech about “Me! Me! Me!” and I don’t agree with the Olympic Committee much – but in this case they were right to kick him right in the arse and send him on his way.

He wanted to do this for the U.S.?

Standard operating procedure for all US presidents. The presidential limo is flown to his destinations. It’s about safety and a very [rightfully] paranoid Secret Service. They know the pedigree of that vehicle and who has touched it from day one. It’s just a safety precaution.

Yeah, whenever the President goes anywhere, it’s not just Air Force One, it’s a friggin’ deployment of multiple jets and cargo planes. Now *that* was the real story as far as waste of taxpayer resources for this fiasco.

ANCHORAGE…2022

It would be an LLP (Life’s Little Payback) moment if Palin lobbied the IOC in 2013. And Alaska got it.

It’s a C-5 anyway, I’ve seen it 2 times on the runway in AZ. They transport the whole Secret Service motorcade. It’s pretty impressive.

I don’t get Levin here in Madison. Does he just yell for 3 hours a day?

BadgerHawk on October 3, 2009 at 10:27 PM

Yes, in that nasally, annoying voice. Good god I can only take for like 30 minutes maximum.

BTW,
Since they fly that Cadillac around everywhere he goes…..since the Feds now OWN GM it’s only a matter of time till the Caddy breaks down during some motorcade.

It won’t surprise me with the Gov running GM that the whole car doesn’t just collapse into a pile of bolts and sheet metal on some parade route one day.

FGM (FedGovMotors) at it’s best.

“International Committee Rejects Obama’s Personal Pitch that His Large Ego Be Site of 2016 Olympics” http://optoons.blogspot.com/2009/10/obamas-personal-pitch-that-his-ego-be.html

Mervis Winter on October 3, 2009 at 10:58 PM

I wondered how much The President and his Wife hurt our chances…
Now we know.
Whoever thought this was a good idea should be tarred and feathered. President Obama just proved a naive narcisst is in charge of America. Think how that plays in Iran, with the Taliban and Russia.
Hell how does it play in Israel.
I sense a scary few months PRAY.

Gracelynn on October 3, 2009 at 10:58 PM

And what about BHO’s comments afterward? They are just so asinine!

“I believe it’s always a worthwhile endeavor to promote and boost the United States of America and invite the world to come see what we’re all about,” Mr. Obama said upon returning to Washington Friday. “And we obviously would have been eager to host these Games, but…this nation and our athletes are still very much excited to compete in 2016.”

“Promote and boost the U.S.?” Every one knows that all Hussein has done in the last 9 months is apologize for America. He has done NOTHING for the U.S. and everything to promote himself. “For the world to see what we are about???” Really??? As if the world doesn’t know what we are about? Is this because we are about something else now, or is he just such an egotistical idiot that he thinks the world didn’t know about us until The One became president? “This nation and our athletes are still very much excited to compete in 2016?” Are you kidding me? Why wouldn’t athletes be excited to compete? Because Hussein won’t be opening the ceremonies?

For someone who is supposed to be such an inspiring and brilliant orator, this whole statement is just stupid! And the academia elites question Sarah Palin’s intellect!

texgal on October 3, 2009 at 11:00 PM

So, will the Obama start another apology tour?

Thanks. I tend to be talk-radio’d out after an hour of Beck, plus 3 of Rush and a couple of the local stuff. Levin’s radio personality (loud mouthed bully) just seems so different from his book (legal and historical scholar/ visionary). I don’t really get the divergence.

I’m see a lot of that this morning. It’s all about failure, excusing failure, relishing failure, and pretending that it’s too mean to relish failure.

Lawyers are just not as smart as they claim to be – see Althouse, see Michelle and Barack Obama.

Also, Ms. Althouse, ya got exactly what ya voted for.
