Gray Lady: White House clueless on Olympic bid

posted at 9:15 am on October 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I must admit I was a little surprised to read this scathing account of cluelessness and incompetence in the effort to land the 2016 Olympics for Chicago in the New York Times … until I realized it ran in the Sports section.  However, political reporters Jeff Zeleny and Peter Baker wrote it, and their inside look at the run-up and the reaction at the White House shows just how much this administration has bought its own press:

Losing out on the Olympics, of course, is not the sort of war-and-peace issue that defines a presidency, and the embarrassment will presumably fade in a news cycle or two. But it provides fodder for critics who are already using it as a metaphor for a president who, in their view, focuses on the wrong priorities and overestimates his capacity to persuade the world to follow his lead. …

A sense of stunned bewilderment suffused Air Force One and the White House. Only after the defeat did many advisers ask questions about the byzantine politics of the Olympic committee. Valerie Jarrett, the president’s senior adviser and a Chicago booster who persuaded him to make the trip while at the United Nations last week, had repeatedly compared the contest to the Iowa caucuses.

But officials said the administration did not independently verify Chicago’s chances, relying instead on the Chicago 2016 committee assertions that the city had enough support to finish in the top two. Mr. Obama, Michelle Obama, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Ms. Jarrett worked the phones in recent weeks without coming away with a sense of how behind Chicago really was.

Let’s see.  The White House jumped in front of a situation without understanding it, relying on the word of political cronies to shape their comprehension without checking for themselves.  Only after they failed did they ask themselves about the political environment in which they made their proposal.  Are we talking about ObamaCare, cap-and-trade, or the Olympics?  It’s hard to tell.

No one can accuse the Times of assigning an Obama-hater to this story, either.  The last we mentioned Zeleny, he was hitting Obama with a hard-hitting question about how enchanted he was with being President.  It doesn’t sound like Zeleny and Baker are terribly enchanted with Obama and his staff at the moment, nor should they be.

In short, this is a microcosm of the entire administration.  They entered into a situation about which they knew nothing and put the prestige of the presidency on the line without bothering to listen past themselves and the Daley Machine in Chicago.  It only occurred to them that they didn’t know the first thing about the situation until after having wasted their time and distracting themselves from much more pressing — and presidential — matters of war and the economy.

It’s not the end of the world, but perhaps it’s finally the end of the fawning and obsequious assumptions of brilliance about Barack Obama that have informed his media treatment since January 2007.

Why doesn’t the MSM ask Valerie Jarrett about the untold millions she would have stood to make on the slum buildings she owns in an area that just happened to have been selected as the potential site for the Olympic Village had Chicago won the bid?

Ask her what would have happened to all the people living below the poverty level who are living in those same buildings once the bulldozers were all lined up and ready to go.

Ask her if this is the real reason she went all the way to Copenhagen with Michelle and Oprah in tow, to insure she would get what she was really looking to get here.

Why doesn’t someone ask Valerie all of this?

I had heard, but finally confirmed, Chicago only got 18 votes. You can’t tell me that the White House couldn’t have somehow gathered enough information to know it was going to be this bad. A close vote wouldn’t have been as damaging, but only 18 votes? Major fail.

Once upon a time I used to think Harvard and Obambi’s other schools were hiding his grades and other records because those grades were lousy. Nowadays it seems more likely that his grades were very good but artificially high and completely unearned. Harvard and Zero’s other schools probably don’t want made public just how willing they were to lower their standards and cook their grades for the sake of a cancer called “diversity.”

That is what sank Zero and his wife at the IOC. Both showed up with a sense of entitlement honed by years of undeserved accolades and set-aside treatment and were completely flummoxed by an IOC unwilling to lower their standards. Both Zero and Michelle-O rode their chariot into town expecting more Affirmative Action, so to speak, from the Olympics Committee and were shocked when those unimpressed Committee members told them to go to hell.

Sales were up in the summer, but at the expense of auto sales during the fall, since the initial post-Clunkers numbers show a sharp drop in new vehicle purchases for September.

So they just kicked the can down the road, and moved potential dealer closures and job losses from the Labor Day period to the Thanksgiving-Christmas holiday season, in hopes there would be some magic turnaround in the overall economy between May and August. They gambled and lost and now are faced with coming back to Congress to seek more bailout funds for GM and Chrysler by early next year.

Regrettably, I think you underestimate the fawning obsequiousness of Obama’s supporters in the media, in the political class, and amongst the elitist intelligentsia (or what passes for analytical thinkers at the university level).

He is the pawn of the crooks who put him in office. Having defeated the Clintons and then the Republicans, Obama felt he was invincible. Jarrett has little experience outside of DC and Chicago. No one in the Obama administration has a shred of respect for this country, the American people or the office of POTUS. They figured they send their A team, a suitcase full of money, Obama would give a speech, and it was a done deal. I would laugh, if it weren’t so pathetic.

Actually, very few because of the rebate program. Most went out at that point because the government took away their dealerships, some of them in the family for almost 100 years. Many were kept because of who they backed politically. Those that DID hang on will do so for a very short time. Now that the rebate program is over, and those who were already going to buy a car anyhow, used up those funds, it only delayed the dead time they’re having now.

Well, the REPUBLICAN owned dealerships were closed by the obama administration so we will be working with some artifically skewed data.

Can you tell me where in the US constitution we find the authority for the federal government to redistribute wealth in this manner?

The money that was spend on CFC had to come from somewhere. Had that money been spent by the private sector, market forces would have allocated it much more efficiently. There would have been a much more positive net effect on the economy and GDP.

BTW – sales dropped like a rock after CFC ended. Government intervention ala the tax on luxury boats, always has a ton of unintended consequences

Good point – namely since foreign companies benefitted the most – and out of domestic sales – Ford’s F 150 topped the list.

Dealerships are continuing to close, have no stock or have too much stock – blindly believing the cash for clukers would keep on rolling… and to top it off – initially closed dealerships who were in the black, largely due to political affiliations – and not profit results.

Odie1941 on October 3, 2009 at 1:33 PM

Metaphor, indeed.
Also, the epic fail of the Olympic bid underscores a much larger problem – exactly how often does this egotistical faith in their own press interfere with their behavior on other, much larger and more important issues? It is apparent that Obama sets very little store by the counsel of his own experts on Afghanistan and the economy. His administration has yet to shift out of campaign mode; the “spin doctors” hold sway, simply because this man is in love with the idea of being The President, and has neither the interest nor the inclination to be a president. This is the definition of the Machine politics that have corrupted Chicago for decades. Never mind what the right decision is; rather, what is the decision that will put him in the best possible light? We see what this sort of cronyism and partisanship has done to the city of Chicago. On a national scale, it not only won’t work, but it will prove the undoing of the United States.

All socialists are fiscally conservative. They hate it when they have to give their money away, which is why they just don’t pay taxes. However, the socialist in them has absolutely no problem with spending other peoples’ money.

So the definition of a Marxist is socially liberal, fiscally conservative.

Well, I was glad the Olympics went to Rio. They have a big statue of Jesus on the hill overlooking the city which no one has taken down yet so they deserve something. And South America has never hosted an Olympic event. AND we, the American people, aren’t going to have to foot the bill for a corrupt sporting event in a corrupt town run by corrupt politicians who deal with corrupt contractors who will submit corrupted bids which will be terribly underbid causing the project to go over budget thus putting the burden of paying for the overrun squarely on the shoulders of everyone else at large–not just those in Chicago and Illinois. I think we dodged a financial bullet here even though we paid for AT least two plane loads of people, their meals, their hotels, ground transportation, etc in the course of this absolutely fruitless junket to nowhere. I am relieved. I must also confess to a certain amount of glee at the fact that O, Ms.O, the O, and the rest of the Hee Haw gang couldn’t land the most premiere sporting event in the world. It’s fun to watch “the world” say “no” to a megalomaniac. Unfortunately it doesn’t bode well for more pressing matters of foreign policy. But then the world knows a good joke when it sees one.

His incompetence is a plus for us, but that is offset by the truly destructive nature of his desires for America. It doesn’t take much competence to wreak havoc on a complex system, and that is all he cares about.

bileduct on October 3, 2009 at 12:20 PM

Cash 4 Clunkers was the best fastest way to kill off more dealerships than the government had already closed.

What dealerships need is steady demand based on a growing economy. What they got instead was a cash crunch waiting for the government to live up to their obligations which crippled many of them. Then when they finally got paid what they were due, (if the bankers had not already taken them over) they were faced with a dead market because anyone who was entertaining the idea of buying a car in the next year or so already had.

Many Many dealerships will close this year and next thanks to this payoff to the UAW.

Valerie Jarrett is an imbecile. Simply watch any recording available of her speaking. Joe Biden is a legendary imbecile. And O’Bozo himself only hears what his sycophants tell him. When the sycophants are of the Chicago Dem/Mob variety, you can only imagine the poofery.

Why doesn’t the MSM ask Valerie Jarrett about the untold millions she would have stood to make on the slum buildings she owns in an area that just happened to have been selected as the potential site for the Olympic Village had Chicago won the bid?

She might have made millions, but either way we paid millions for the presidental trip to push for what she wanted. It would appear that under the circumstances there is a conflict of interest. She used her official position for personal interest and finacial gain. She used tax payer funding to promote her interest for personal gain and used a government office, the presidency and all those that were involved in making the arrangements, for personal gain. The fact that her efforts proved ineffective in achieving the desired goal does not negate the attempt that was made or the expense that was billed to the tax payers.

Of course this is not alarming to the Obama administration for who this type of abuse is acceptable.

Is it?

Or are we also talking about the Gates arrest blunder, TARP, Iran, Honduras, Russia…his cabinet?

anuts on October 3, 2009 at 2:08 PM

anuts makes a really great point, that I think deserves more attention. This administration has laid waste to the whole claim of anyone being “socially liberal, but a fiscal conservative.” The two are contradictory, at least in the context of today’s Socialist Democratic Party. Today, to be socially liberal is by definition, to be fiscally socialist.

Star20 on October 3, 2009 at 3:02 PM

In fact, I am socially liberal, fiscally conservative.

AnninCA on October 3, 2009 at 11:32 AM

This means one thing…and it very typical of the libtard universe.

All socialists are fiscally conservative. They hate it when they have to give their money away, which is why they just don’t pay taxes. However, the socialist in them has absolutely no problem with spending other peoples’ money.

So the definition of a Marxist is socially liberal, fiscally conservative.

BobMbx on October 3, 2009 at 2:19 PM

No one bought that revisionist BS from CA.

maverick muse on October 3, 2009 at 3:57 PM

BobMx,

The definition of Marxist may be a social liberal PRESUMING fiscal conservatism in order to sell their propaganda shtick of lies. Note well, they have to lie to themselves, not just to others. They can not be true to themselves, as they are constantly revising versions, as if there’s no history.

And this above all, to thine ownself be true. Propagandists interested in thieving liberty from others just don’t get it.

Shakespeare’s HAMLET
And these few precepts in thy memory
See thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue,
Nor any unproportioned thought his act.
Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.
Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried,
Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel;
But do not dull thy palm with entertainment
Of each new-hatch’d, unfledged comrade. Beware
Of entrance to a quarrel, but being in,
Bear’t that the opposed may beware of thee.
Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice;
Take each man’s censure, but reserve thy judgment.
Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
But not express’d in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
For the apparel oft proclaims the man,
And they in France of the best rank and station
Are of a most select and generous chief in that.
Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
This above all: to thine ownself be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

I’ve been expressing my hope that Obama would get some sense knocked into his head from this fall from Parnassus.

Given his mind, he’s most likely to come to find stateside that he can survive this rather easily. Perhaps too easily for his own good, as his audacity of hope will motivate him to continue rashly taking careless chances without fear of ultimate consequences, the media cushioning every fall as best they can. Without being confronted with his own faults, he’d inevitably lead himself to fall as Humpty Dumpty at the point of no return.

Re: the other Gates

I have angst over Defense Sec. Gates sitting on the McChrystal report STILL, and the “20 minute” gloss-over Obama’s media are hyping in the latest London moment when Obama had yet to read the report that he was supposedly “discussing”.

About Obama’s Afghan lack of leadership, I’ve read two rumors:

1. Obama plans to replace Sec.Gates by year’s end with a yes-man who has NO concept regarding national defense except to walk away from that responsibility.

2. Obama is waiting to announce anything until Tony Blair becomes EU President, at which point Obama will continue to not make decisions.

Ok, has everybody calmed down now?

The delirium level of yesterday’s pants-wetting “Obama Fail” frenzy had me thinking that late returns had come in and that he had lost the election.

Turns out he’s still president and will be for the next three plus years. The Obama haters were just displaying their frantic desperation to find something anything to proclaim him a failure and perform the victory dance denied them last year.
But that was yesterday. You’re already jonesing for your next “Obama Fail” fix, aren’t you?

Oh, and Chicago lost the Olympics.
Well done, conservatives…carry on wanking!

chumpThreads on October 3, 2009 at 5:05 PM

A sense of stunned bewilderment suffused Air Force One and the White House. Only after the defeat did many advisers ask questions about the byzantine politics of the Olympic committee

The Washington Post was kinder to the filthy lying coward.

The front page had a story (below the fold) mentioned in passing the the filthy liar was well-recieved and called the liar “disappointed.” Inside, the real story of just how bad this defeat was emerged. There was no way these games were going anywhere but Rio and it was absurd to think that the filthy liar could so enchant the committee that the outcome would have been different. Other stories talked about how Michelle Obama absolutely captivated everybody in Copenhagen with not a few times implying that she’s the new Jackie Kennedy. The sports section blamed it all on the USOC and their feud with the IOC.

Personally, I think Rio is where these games should have gone. South America as a continent has never hosted an Olympiad while all the other nations have been prior hosts. More importantly with the exception of South Korea in 1988 and China in 2008, the Summer Games have always gone to one of the big and Westernized nations since Mexico City hosted in 1968. If not a European nation or the US it was in places like Australia.

The next Winter games are in Canada and the next Summer games are in London. Why should the pattern continue with the US, Spain, or Japan? I would suggest that it needs to go to Brazil with the hope that their Olympic dreams of prosperity are not dashed when the realities of organizing such an event sink in. Contrary to popular opinion, Olympic cities don’t make the kind of money suggested during the courtship phase. Chicago spent millions just to get to the finals.

I’m not sure why the second rumor has anything to do with the first. What am I missing?

As to the first rumor, it makes sense. Gates was retained to give the filthy lying coward political cover on military matters in the beginning days of the administration. Gates was a fool to stay on. The filthy lying coward has his choices in place in the Departments (Army/Navy/AF) so Gates and the people he kept around are in the way now. They need to be replaced so that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and some of the various other intiatives of a party and President that loathes the military exerts its power.

More interesting to me is if Mike Mullen will get reconfirmed or if the lying coward has somebody else lined up to become his yes-man as CJCS.
