Video: World’s biggest celebrity wonders where it all went wrong
posted at 4:15 pm on October 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
A gracious/politic statement, which was followed by a few minutes of spin (not seen here) about the new unemployment numbers and, er, no question-and-answer period. I guess we’ll have to wait for the next ObamaCare “if you like your plan, you can keep your plan” singalong primetime presser for his thoughts on what happened in Copenhagen.
The British press isn’t waiting around, though. Tough stuff:
It was only the Olympic Games, the White House will argue — not a high-stakes diplomatic gamble with North Korea. It is always worthwhile when Mr Obama sells America to the rest of the world, David Axelrod, his chief political adviser, said today. But that argument will fall on deaf ears in the US. Americans want their presidents to be winners.
Mr Obama was greeted — as usual — like a rock star by the IOC delegates in Copenhagen — then humiliated by them. Perception is reality. A narrow defeat for Chicago would have been acceptable — but the sheer scale of the defeat was a bombshell, and is a major blow for Mr Obama at a time when questions are being asked about his style of governance…
This has all added to the perception that Mr Obama’s soaring rhetoric — which captured the imagination during last year’s election — is simply not enough when it comes to confronting the myriad challenges of the presidency. His spectacular Olympic failure will only add to that.
Elsewhere, the boss has a little fun by jokingly playing the race card on Obama’s defenders. Exit quotation from former Olympian “Rowdy” Gaines: “Maybe there is some hangover from politics, from the last eight years.”

In the words of John McClain (sp): “Welcome to the party, pal.”
I wish more people shared this outlook you know, about 2 years ago when so many people were screaming this from the rooftops *way* before the election.

This Chicagoan is ELATED we’re not getting the Olympics; this morning we were all doom-and-gloom that it was “in the bag” and overjoyed when Chicago was out of the running.
NO ONE I know wanted the games. Some are “I’m not happy, but I’m not sad” but everyone else I know — regardless of political affiliation — are ecstatic that we’re not getting the games.
Taxes here are high enough as it is, thank you.
lansing quaker on October 2, 2009 at 4:55 PM
Perhaps true, in which case why did Obama stick his neck out? It was a completely unnecessary and embarrassing defeat for him and therefore a stupid move. He should have stayed the hell out of it if he didn’t want the FAIL tag.
It has nothing to do with the Olympics at this point, it has to do with the total lack of judgment of our current POTUS.

he isn’t over-exposed; obama was overrated from the start.
look at all he actually accomplished in Chicago as a community organizer and all that he accomplished as a state senator in springfield and as a US Senator in dc:
NOTHING.
ab so effin lutely ZIP.
as a leader, obama is a zero.
yes: he is a hardcore leftist.
yes: he is antizionist and isolationist.
but the key to his present job is the fact that he was owned by the machine and soros.
without their help – and the help of their minions – seiu, acorn ACT, CAP et al etc – obama is a zero.

http://cbs2chicago.com/olympics2016/chicago.2016.bid.2.1190248.html:
At a rally in Daley Plaza five months before the election, Obama drummed up enthusiasm for the bid. He said: “In 2016, I’ll be wrapping up my second term as president, so I can’t think of a better way than to be marching into Washington Park alongside Mayor Daley, alongside Rahm Emanuel, alongside Dick Durbin, alongside Valerie Jarrett as President of the United States, and announcing to the world, ‘Let the games begin!’” (emphasis added)

It’s always wonderful to go to some part of the world that’s hosted the Olympics and appreciate the beautiful facilities constructed at enormous local expense that now act as feral cat housing and serve half a dozen joggers a day.
I know there’s exceptions, but they tend to be of the kind that prove the rule.
Would an Olympics have been good for Chicago? It sounds like their bid was tailored at dropping too much baksheesh in Daley’s cronies’ pockets, not leaving enough on the table for the sticky fingers of the IOC.
And of course Obama’s now had his McCain-steps-in-TARP moment, someone needs to remind Creases Broder and his diction-distracted cohorts that temperament is not judgment.

I am enjoying the hell out of this. It always makes me smile when arrogance and entitlement gets a fist to the face, even if that arrogance and entitlement is being done in my name as an American. It pleases me that there are still people in this world who do not like snotty, self-involved, vacuous frauds masquerading as important people. Today’s humiliation couldn’t have happened to a more deserving bunch of smug, superficial, supercilious twits.
It would be made all the better if this taught the Obamas to practice a bit of humility, but it won’t. Narcissism knows no humility. They’ll only look for others to blame.

Probably Michelle’s whining about her great “sacrifice” turned them off. Or her depressing speech about her crippled father… She made Chicago sound like a real drag compared to those crazy parades in Rio.

They’ve already started… the Olympics “expert” for CBS 2 here in Chicago says the IOC is mad at the US for the Moscow boycott in 1980.
Unfortunately, it’s hard to swallow that particular bit of nonsense since the Olympics have been held here FOUR TIMES since then.

kg598301 on October 2, 2009 at 5:30 PM
Keep in mind that if Chicago had won the 2016 Olympics, Obama would have been given all the credit.
In all probability, it would have been spun that the world love`s Obama so much they gave the Olympics not to Chicago or the USA, but rather to Obama.
And the new name the media would take the Chicago games would be something like “Obamalympics”.
So, yeah, let`s rub it in that Obama made a fool of himself.
The President of the United States is supposed to be the leader of all the world leaders, the US is supposed to be a head above all the rest and the President of the United States should only show up to be given the first prize…not the loser, booby prize.
Obama made the US Presidency look weaker in the eyes of the world.

marybel on October 2, 2009 at 5:42 PM
Because rather than the mayor of Chicago, or the Governor or even a senator or other congressmen, 0bama took it upon himself to drop EVERYTHING and run to the IOC meeting with his wife and 0prah. Afghanistan, the economy, Iran’s nuclear ambition, and his personal pet projects of 0bamacare and Crap-n-Tax all went to the wayside because HE felt it was a more important issue. He interjected himself and put his own reputation (such as it is) on the line and he failed. Not only failed, but Chicago was eliminated first.
I believe that is called an EPIC FAIL.

IOC don’t take kindly to arrogant shallow bids. When Atlanta won for the 1996 games, they did because their bid was brilliant. Whatever you think of the games that followed, the bid was detailed, precise, comprehensive and chock full of actual facts. My city Melbourne presented what amounted to a coffee-table glossy which was short on everything but full of ‘style.’ They were eliminated very quickly. This sounds very familiar. The IOC does its homework and rewards cities that do the same.
