Great news: McCain set to remake GOP in his own centrist image
posted at 2:23 pm on October 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
Thus is a new generation of amnesty-supporting Republicans made. Can you feel the excitement?
It’s all part of an approach that is at odds with most other recent failed presidential nominees, whose immediate response to defeat was to retreat from the electoral arena. But those familiar with McCain’s thinking say he has expressed serious concern about the direction of the party and is actively seeking out and supporting candidates who can broaden the party’s reach…
In mid-September, McCain invited his favored candidates to the St. Regis Hotel in midtown Manhattan to rub shoulders with 40 of the senator’s top donors at a reception for the Arizona Republican…
McCain told POLITICO in a brief interview that he was determined to play a major role in the GOP’s rebuilding effort—beginning with the party’s 2010 campaign.
“I think it’s important, at this stage in my career, to try to support candidates that I think represent the next generation of leadership in the Republican Party,” the 73-year-old McCain said on his way to the Senate floor for a vote last week.
The main beneficiary of McCain’s largesse so far: Illinois Senate candidate Mark Kirk, whom you’ll remember for his crucial House vote in favor of cap-and-trade and who currently counts among his informal advisors one Steve Schmidt. Exit question: Given the demand there’ll be for Palin on the campaign trail once her book blows sky high, and given that she’s obviously going to position herself to Mitt’s and Huck’s right as the “true conservative” choice, aren’t we practically guaranteed a McCain vs. Palin proxy fight at some point? But where, oh where, is such a fight likely to take place?

Republican In Name Only…is that not clear?
You asked the atheist question. I don’t give a fig if you pray to your recliner.
And, uh, sure.

The American electorate:
Socialists (“liberals”): 30%
Libertarians, real/classic liberals: 40%
Conservatives: 30%
There is nothing wrong with going after the center, but which center? McCain is a mushy conservative, like Huckabee. The see a center in terms of “social values”.
Republicans can recapture the initiative if they shift the debate from conservative vs liberal to liberty vs socialism.
The leadership we need won’t come from conservatives, not from the mushy RINOs and not from the holier-than-thou “conservative base” either.
Never forget; we got McCain because he was the only compromise candidate acceptable to the “conservative base”.

Who knows – maybe McCain agrees with his bimbo daughter – that she and her kind are the GOP of the future.
The “moderate” Republicans have been unable to win – as others have said before – offer the voters a Dem and a Dem-lite they are going to chose the origial version – at least they have no doubt as to what pig in the poke they’re getting. If all the GOP wants to be is a weak version of the Dem party there is no reason for conservatives to care enough to vote. Hello party of insignificance.

I am done with Rubio, his time as speaker was riddled by mismanagement, corruption and just plain laziness. I have seen nothing from him to tell me than his time as a US Senator would be any different.

With just a little luck, McCain won’t be the senator from AZ. 61% of Arizona Republicans think he is out of touch with them. All we need is somebody with some experience and a conservative message. JD Hayworth comes to mind…..

Crist vs. Rubio will be the First Battle of Manasass in the civil war within the GOP.
Sarah needs to gather up the remnants of any conservative/libertarians left within the GOP, add independent con/libertarians and make an all-out effort to put Rubio in the Senate thereby solidifying her credentials as the leader of the opposition, a reagan conservative, a libertarian, and someone with clout.
Sapwolf on October 2, 2009 at 4:01 PM
Why is it total losers such as McCain never seem to get the message: The American people don’t want you!
WTF DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE ASSHATS LIKE THIS JUST….. GO AWAY????

Give it a rest McCain, time to step aside, or be run over. It’s your choice. Remaking the party in your vision is a prescription for failure once again. Reaching out doesn’t work, broadening the base doesn’t work. Standing firmly for something DOES work. People will come TO you.

I think Captain mcNumbnuts is about to get a shock. I think and I dearly hope Sarah Palin wipes the RINOs out of the party for good.

Alright, class is in session:
A RINO, or Republican In Name Only can usually be found next to their democrat breatheren. They work on bills, such as McCain-Kennedy, McCain-Finegold, and for such loony bills as government run healthcare, cap and tax, and they spend louds of the taxpayer’s money, instead of allowing people to rely on their own self preservation and personal responsibility.
And, you can expect an apology from me when hell freezes over. If you don’t want to get the truth, don’t ask for it.

McCain just doesn’t get it. He thinks the press represents what the people think. He disregards the tea parties and the outrage and the frustration by Republican conservatives who I suspect are leaving the party in droves — I myself am a RIPVO (A Republican in primary voting only). The RNC will never get a penny from me again because of the travesty of RINOs since the early Bush years. They are why we are in the mess we’re in today.
If McCain succeeds in creating a RINO party, I’m going Rogue with Sarah. How about a Constitution Party?

I’m from Arizona, and I’m with you on that. However, I haven’t heard a thing from Hayworth about running. Chris Simcox, founder of the Minute Man Project, has thrown his hat into the ring, but Hayworth has more name recognition. Sure would be a beautiful thing if he did!

Kirk is about the best you are going to get from IL in terms of conservative… What true believers really need to learn is that having Mark Kirk as a Senator is a heck of alot better than having a corrupt friend of Obama as a Senator… I hate to tell you this, but I have lived on the North Shore of IL since I was two and can tell you that Georgia style social conservatives are not going to get elected here… Sorry, but Kirk is definitely better than mob himbo ‘lexie.
Illinidiva on October 2, 2009 at 4:42 PM
I don’t recall ever disagreeing with one of your comments before, ID. Alas…
Kirk is a pathetic liberal and I’ll vote for Roland Burris or that little sissy Gianoulli before I support him. He’s a liar and a full-blown liberal, and he doesn’t even come close to “70%”.
His lifetime ACU rating is 55; his 2007 and 2008 were 40 and 48. He is the 2nd most liberal Republican in the entire House, with only the Maine spinsters more liberal in the Senate. He is a prime candidate to switch parties if it suits his electoral purposes.
He is pro-partial birth abortion,
He sponsored the idiotic “assault weapons ban”,
He voted for Crap and Tax,
He sponsored the idiotic “hate crimes” legislation,
He is McCain’s twin sister on amnesty.
I urge you — ignore party labels. If you want a conservative in the Senate from Illinois, vote for one. Don’t put another liberal in the Senate and tell yourself it’s ok “he’s a Republican”. That means nothing.
Jaibones on October 2, 2009 at 4:43 PM
Has there ever been a political party more separated from and contemptuous of its base than the Republican Party? The Republican Party = the Democrats biggest advantage.
Django on October 2, 2009 at 4:48 PM
McCain is a strong conservative.
The problem is that he picks certain, high news areas to cross the aisle. He then disparages his base and prides himself on snubbing his party and his base.
So, while, on the whole, McCain is a strong conservative, he pissed off many conservatives because of need to cross the aisle and tick off his base.

Kids, kids, kids, as President John Connally demonstrated amply when he was just the leading “centrist,” party-operative “frontrunner” in 1979-80, establishment Republicans always know best. They’ll get together again and give us another wealthy “mainstream” Republican to unite around, and we’ll soon be re-living the Connally Era of Really Centrist Centrism that everyone remembers so fondly from 1981-8.

Ok, let’s see how I did…remember behind every bad student is a bad teacher. A RINO is a Republican who feigns ideological adherence to POLITICAL and NOT SOCIAL conservative values while concurrently ceding those same values to parties or interests deemed outside and beyond the core, POLITICAL ideology.
So, if Sarah Palin was a lesbian and an Atheist but still adhered to the POLITICAL core values of the conservative movement, she would NOT be considered a RINO and still receive your vote and support, correct?
HornetSting on October 2, 2009 at 4:10 PM
I’m not sure how you accusing me of being an Atheist is somehow “the truth” when I am not and have never professed such a designation. By me simply asking a question regarding Atheists is evidence enough for you to judge my spirituality then I suppose I now must be a homosexual since I also inquired about this in the above reference to Palin. If you cannot admit your error, so be it. I seem to recall GWB’s inability to admit his personal shortcomings as well. I suppose you’d consider that good company, and thus, compassionate.
Good4Onan on October 2, 2009 at 5:36 PM
No crap.
The funny thing is, all of those compromise bills such as cap & trade, amnesty, and the stimulus package poll terribly.
They literally represent NO ONE. Everyone for those bills is a democrat.
They support crap liberal bills the majority opposes. Crap liberal bills we put them in office to oppose.
Nothing could be better for the GOP than to rid ourselves of these morons. They serve no one but themselves and are nothing more than media whores. Voting for one of these centrist RINOs is worse for conservativism than voting for a democrat.
jhffmn on October 2, 2009 at 5:39 PM
Good heavens, this idiot really wants to destroy the Republican party. Defeat in the presidential election was apparently not good enough, he wants to make sure that the Republicans are a permanent majority for the coming generations.
Earth to McCain — The Tea Parties and anti-health care rallies are NOT about reaching across the aisle or dis-satisfaction with the Republicans being too partisan.

As a 10-year Navy veteran I honor McCain’s service.
That being said, lets get down to brass tacks. The worst rectal excretia I have ever know were the August Members of the OFFICERS CLUB. Never a bigger bunch of back slapping whilst back-stabbing, obnoxious, arrogant, lying, underhanded, elitist, position based on lineage, douche bags has ever been foisted upon this earth … with the exception of the members of the United States Senate.
These are the type of folks who got fragged by the own men in Vietnam. Their own incompetence is exceeded by their arrogant abuse of their “enlisted inferiors”. Everything about their lives is based upon the same sense of superiority from birth that infuses inbred wealthy elites who are the very worst part of what causes harm both here and around the world.
McCain was and is a beloved senior patrician of both – just like his pals Teddy (I left the bitch in the cah) Kennedy and Hanoi John Kerry. He spent the 8 years of Bush (and I’m no fan of his either) stabbing him in the back on the most important things we wanted Bush to do (Social Security Reform, Border Security, Conservative judges, rip KSM’s and eventually bin Laden’s intestines out an inch at a time) all because Bush bumped his place in the Republican leadership food chain (with the help of Christian Conservatives whom McCain despises).
Like others here have posted Johnny Officer’s Club-boy had 5 times enough dirt to bury Pharobama and won’t touch it as it wasn’t “the noble way” and then went ballistic when Sarah tried to do what should have been done.
McCain betrayed us pure and simple because he believes to the core of his soul that it is better to lose while being “nobly above everyone” than it would be to give a dirtbag like Obama the kick in the balls and the Biblical ass kicking he so richly deserves. It’s the same effing NOBLE stupidity that Bush’s father had, too – and Bush I hated Reagan for sticking to his real principles and going for blood instead of taking his place in the good old OFFICERS CLUB.
McCain sucks and that boys club sh*t is treasonous to our principles and to the future of this country. This country would have elected McCain if he’d acted like a real man instead of acting like a frigging Patrician and he need to retire to the Officer’s Club and leave the world to those of us who got a lot more years to suffer with and try to survive from the foul stench that is the Commiecrat infested Washington DC – which will be a lot easier without his influence.

No, we got McVain because of conservative fratricide in the early primaries.
Hunter, Thompson, Huckabee, and, to a lesser extent,Paul divided the conservative and quasi-libertarian vote and killed off each others’ chances, leaving Giuliani, Romney and McCain, all moderates, standing alone with less than a third of the voting done. The GOP ended up with Bob Dole Part Deux for 2008, with similar results.

Please can someon get McCain off the stage! If this is the path that the Republicans are going to take, then let me warn you now ( people who are wanting to clean D.C. in 2010 and 2012)this will allow the status quo to remain as it is now. If McCain thinks he can re-create the Republican Party into a viable contender he is sadly mistaken. This will only send the moderates that got us into this mess to begin with, and the independents to go and support the independent party, but in so doing it will water down the votes and the districts throughout the country and the Socialists will remain! We must ( the people) change the Republican party into a true Conservative/Constitutional party once again. What the republicans do not understand is that the people are not just upset with the socialists dems we are equally sick and tired of the Republican that have stood by and allowed no less the corruption that the dems have! The Republicans need to know this they will be sent packing, also! 2010 is packing day for any politician that has not stood up for our Constitution and put a stop to growing Gov’t! Most of the “idearaiser” ideas were rehashed ideas which were already in the pipeline to be passed in the Senate.
If Rubio’s management was so great, why is Florida in so much bugetary trouble when he led the body that holds the pursestrings?
Why were there over 70 house members under investigation in his own party, including his hand-picked successor who got indicted for taking a big paying job with a company he had steered state funds to. Something that Rubio did himself. Of course when Rubio was asked about it, his memory conveniently went blank.

My prediction; the GOP will nominate Romney, who is a fraud, and lose.

Name ANYONE in the GOP that can win. Let’s start seeing some names.

Uhh, troll, McCain just made that statement of few days ago!
Now I don’t know about Demint, but Palin has indeed called Teh Won out on his unconstitutional behavior.
See her Facebook note.

I understand the triumvirates reasoning, they have a valid point to a degree. But what if the GOP is beyond saving? What if the infrastructure created by the Rockefellers is designed to keep conservatives out? Some would argue that is already the case. What options does that leave the libertarian/conservative wing of the party?
I learned my lesson, I don’t take what the triumvirate says as gospel anymore even though I do agree with them philosophically. In my eyes they lost a lot of credibility during the Bush years as they cheerleaded the GOP brand despite them having become a big government party riddled with corruption. Limbaugh’s confession the day after the 2006 debacle left a bitter taste in my mouth, coupled with his alliance with Bush despite Bush clearly and purposefully moving the party towards socialism is something that a principled individual should have serious issues with. I knew then, after being a dittohead for about 8 years I had to step back and reconsider where I get my information from.
As for what will happen if a third party is created? Who knows! I suspect that a third party might actually emerge, but the problems third parties have is that they don’t get the free media marketing that the two parties in control do. Also, there is no way that the Democrat-Republican establishment would allow a viable third party to form. They would attempt to destroy it so that they can continue their planned road to socialism. The differences between the two parties is minimal, and any attempt to move the Republican party right is resisted, just look at McCain’s attempts to continue the Bush GOP doctrine.
At this point, I don’t see the GOP fighting back in any meaningful way. They may win elections in the future, but do you honestly believe that they will actually REDUCE the size of government? I’ve asked it a million times here but I’ll say it again – When have the Republicans ever reduced the size of government? Even under Reagan the size of government grew. What alternative does that leave us except to seek another party.
