Comedy gold: CNN anchor in utter disbelief as Chicago is eliminated

I’ll keep updating the other thread but this one’s too much fun to bury there. An instant classic, courtesy of Greg Hengler.

Update: While you watch, a question from John Miller to meditate on. I fear we all know the answer, my friends.

Mayor Daley has no other use for Obama now. Tossed aside. Obama lost the Olympics because he travels all over the world telling everybody how horrible America is. Why would they want to bring the games here? This is delicious.

suzyk on October 2, 2009 at 1:03 PM

Why didn’t Obama send ACORN instead? This would have been a done deal!

redzap on October 2, 2009 at 1:01 PM

They are investigating ways to get dead people to vote even now. Stuffing the ballot box isn’t as easy when there are only 95 votes.

petunia on October 2, 2009 at 1:03 PM

I’m puzzled by something: why didn’t Barry sue to have Rio, Tokyo, and Madrid removed from the ballot?

Vashta.Nerada on October 2, 2009 at 1:01 PM

LOL

Hiya Ciska on October 2, 2009 at 1:03 PM

“Over the last several years, sometimes that fundamental truth about the United States has been lost,” Obama said. “One of the legacies, I think, of this Olympic Games in Chicago would be a restoration of that understanding of what the United States is all about and the United States’ recognition of how we are linked to the world.”

OK, Now I hate him even more. Hussein loses an Olympic bid for his cronies in Chicago, and what does he do, he starts trashing our country again.

9/11 happened you friggin idiot, and we showed our muscle.

Quit apologizing for our patriotism!

AN OLYMPIC SIZED EPIC FAIL!

fbcmusicman on October 2, 2009 at 1:08 PM

I thought news anchors weren’t supposed to show bias. ;) That’s a classic. I think the anchor showed a bit of arrogance as well as bias in his surprise, and I’d be surprised if the people in Madrid and Tokyo take that well. Then, there’s Rio, which he didn’t even mention.

I feel for Chicago, but, really, with Obama being a de facto leader on this effort and showing his fine touch on things like Cash for Clunkers and Healthcare, I’m not surprised that they were booted first.

Obama could not fake it,
Chicago did not make it,
Michelle isn’t happy,
She’s feeling kinda slappy,
Run, Barry, Run.

Denmark wasn’t buying,
Barry’s constant lying,
Oprah isn’t happy,
She’s feeling kinda slappy
Hide, Barry, Hide

Apologies get kind a boring,
‘specially when your city’s warring,
Daley isn’t happy,
He’s feeling kinda slappy,
Blame, Barry, Blame

The country’s finally seeing,
Barry’s just an ordinary being,
The people are not happy,
They’re feeling kinda slappy,
Spin, Barry, Spin

Axelrod shoulda sent James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles to do TOTUS’ pimpin’ for them!
Then we woulda seen how all that backroom dealing got done and could now be blowing the lid off of Rio’s corrupt ways!

Other folks have made more eloquent replies than I can, but I can offer the perspective of living in Los Angeles for the 1984 Olympics… sort of (because I mostly skipped town for the duration, though I did get to watch one Olympic event live).

So far as I know, the L.A. Olympic Games were the only ones in recent history that didn’t leave the host city stuck with (a) massive debt and (b) a bunch of new buildings that weren’t nearly as useful to the city’s post-Olympic life as the hype would have had us believe. This was because Pete Ueberroth went after, and got, corporate sponsorship for just about everything to do with the Games, down to the (IIRC) official water provider. “Official [fill-in-the-blank] of the 1984 Olympic Games” was a constant joke tagline around here at the time. :-) (Many people deplored the resultant “commercialization” of the Olympics. I am not one of the deplorers, though I understand their point of view.)

Most host cities wind up deeply in debt and with permanent changes to their landscape that are not always a net positive. As a teenager, I happened to visit Munich in 1979, seven years after that city hosted the 1972 Games. The Olympic Village athletes’ residences had been converted to apartments. The complex looked pleasant enough, but kind of dead. I wondered at the time what had been bulldozed to put up those towers.

Hosting another Olympics would only be a short-term gain for America as a whole, and for Chicago in particular it would be just another conduit for corrupt officials to enrich themselves at the expense of long-suffering Illinoisans (if that’s the right collective noun).

I don’t think it’s unpatriotic to take a clear-eyed view of the actual effects on an American city of hosting the Olympic Games. The jobs created are short-term only; the infusion of tourist cash doesn’t last long; and the debts are long-lasting.

It takes a really healthy city to host an Olympics and come out top-side-up. Chicago, with all respect to the folks who live there, is not a healthy city.

Apparently, it is easier for ACORN to get 13 year old San Salvadorian Prostitutes into Rio than Chicago?!?

Yes, I know! :-) You’ll notice I didn’t give the government of LA any credit for how well the Games turned out — it was private enterprise all the way. At least the pols were smart enough to give Mr. Ueberroth a pretty free hand.

Rio de Janeiro is to host the first Olympic Games in South America.

International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge made the announcement in Copenhagen today, to the bitter humiliation of Barack Obama.
The U.S. president was embarrassed on the world stage after the IOC rejected his very personal bid for the 2016 Olympic Games to be hosted in his home town of Chicago.

I have a funny feeling that very soon now –
a)Our government will announce that the renamed Swine Flu is going to kill every single American if we don’t focus on it immediately.
or
b)There will be a sudden warlike effort somewhere.

David Letterman’s sorry sex-life just isn’t going to hold our national attention long enough to stop the momentum of the colossal failure of Team Obama and The Oprah!

Other thoughts:

The kid with the mommy pants just got his lunch money taken away. And the Clintons are standing with the other popular kids laughing at him.

ObjectionSustained on October 2, 2009 at 1:49 PM

There have been reports of poor neighborhoods in Chicago being bought up by Obama cronies in anticipation of the Olympics coming, and expensive new buildings being built on the sites (with taxpayer money) for the enrichment of the thug owners. They were expecting payback for their help in getting Obama elected.

Wow. If “payback’s a bitch”, I wonder what NON-payback will be?
