CNN expert: Actually, Chicago’s Olympics bid was “almost unwinnable”

posted at 5:18 pm on October 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

Probably true, as I can’t think of any reason why Obama’s presence would have actively hurt their chances (although a Sun-Times columnist did rap him earlier this afternoon for an uninspired speech). If having him show up and give his shpiel wasn’t enough to put the city over the top, it stands to reason that nothing was. But, er, how come no one in the White House was bright enough to figure that out beforehand and advise him not to go, then? Says CNN’s Olympics expert of the IOC, “I don’t think they could have cared less if Obama showed up or not.” No one thought to clue Axelrod into that possibility before the plane took off from D.C.?

Meanwhile, an interesting point from Politico about whom Obama was really representing in Copenhagen:

Earlier this week, The White House flatly rejected the notion that Obama’s Chicago ties played any role in his decision or his support for the U.S. bid for the games.

“If it had been Los Angeles, I think the notion that the President would have done less because it was a different U.S. city just doesn’t hold a lot of water,” Press Secretary Robert Gibbs insisted earlier this week.

Some analysts find that claim impossible to believe.

“There’s no question that this whole exercise would not have happened had it not been Chicago. I can’t see him doing the same thing for Seattle or Sheboygan,” said Stephen Hess, a professor at George Washington University. He noted that Obama’s pitch for the city was deeply personal.

Me neither. Anyone think he would have fueled up Air Force One for New York or Miami, say? If not, then how was this some big gesture on behalf of an American Olympics bid rather than a Chicago bid, specifically? In fact, I’m not even sure it was a “Chicago bid” given the ambivalence inside the city about bringing the Olympics there and the very real possibility of tax hikes and layoffs to pay for everything. What it was was a Daley bid, which explains why, according to Chuck Todd, Daley worked every crony connection he had in the White House to get the city’s favorite son out there on his behalf. Bear that in mind the next time you see a liberal crying crocodile tears over how “un-American” it is to chuckle at The One’s failure today. He went to Copenhagen to do a favor for his corrupt hometown political machine and he flamed out big time. Boo hoo.

Like I said, if Obama can’t do it, then the problem is intractable from the start–only nobody starts out as saying that when they think he can.

Doesn’t the claim that you can do something have *something* to do with the analysis that the problem was not intractable in the first place?

Maybe Daley knew it was a long shot and pulled out all the stops in a last desperate attempt to win the bid. As a result, Obama was thrown under the bus by Daley. (Joining his grandmother and all his friends who went before him.)

It was incredibly un-American for The Precedent to go, in the first place. Period. That is not the type of nation we are. We don’t have a national airline (though the Marxist-in-Chief and his lunatic supporters have helped get us a national auto company – which was so un-American that it defied imagination).

But, that’s what we get when we put an Indonesian without an ounce of American sensibilities into the White House …

Don’t worry, it only gets worse.

Bambi’s buddies in the media are moving the goalposts yet again through this one.

They’ve gone through the following positions so far -

1. It’s a toss-up between Chicago and Rio
2. With Obama going on their behalf, Chicago seems to have it in the bag
3. Chicago is out? Chicago is out? Chicago is out?!?
4. Maybe it’s a good thing for Obama that Chicago didn’t win
5. Chicago’s bid was never seriously being considered

By Monday, they’re going to be saying “What Olympics?”

Probably true, as I can’t think of any reason why Obama’s presence would have actively hurt their chances

Then you’re actively sticking your head in the sand. The most obvious reason is that Obama made such an unprecedented move by even going — so unprecedented that a certain beta-blogger was actually convinced that it implied some kind of backdoor deal — that his presence forced IOC voters to protect themselves from being accused of the very thing you accused them of.

Who are you kidding? Obama’s a transplant. He moved there in the mid-1980s. You can tell he didn’t grow up there. No Chicagoan would have been caught dead wearing those mommy jeans in public. And that throwing arm? Don’t get me started.

Simply put, Obama really has no home. And that’s one of his problems. He’s a metrosexual community-activist mercernary.

It’s too bad he didn’t grow up in Chicago because Chicago classmates would have kicked the sh*t out of him on a daily basis. Either he’d ended up entirely different, or he’d have been more clearly and correctly identified and ridiculed as a left-wing zealot rather than allowed to mischaracterize himself as a mainstream figure.

“If it had been Los Angeles, I think the notion that the President would have done less because it was a different U.S. city just doesn’t hold a lot of water,”
Press Secretary Robert Gibbs insisted earlier this week.

Sure thing, Gibbsy. I guess you missed this “ethics update” from the White House:

Just a quick post to advise that we granted an authorization under Section 3 of the President’s Ethics Executive Order to Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett to lead the White House’s effort to support Chicago’s bid to secure the 2016 Olympics.

The President promised during the campaign that staff would not work on contracts or regulations directly related to their former employers. We have captured that promise in Paragraph 2 of our revolving door rules, which applies to non-lobbyists. Valerie previously served as Vice Chair of Chicago 2016, the non-profit entity responsible for the Chicago bid. Although Chicago 2016 was not her “former employer” in traditional terms, the term “former employer” in the President’s Order encompasses entities that appointees served as directors or officers, as Valerie did here. (To be clear, Valerie was not a lobbyist for Chicago 2016, and this waiver has nothing to do with lobbying.)

We decided that a waiver of Paragraph 2 was in the public interest in order to help bring the Olympics back to the United States. Valerie’s past experience with Chicago 2016 makes her ideal to work with the city and its bid committee to help win the Olympics for the U.S., with the many benefits that would bestow. In her time working with the City of Chicago on its bid, she developed knowledge about the process that will make her a powerful advocate and liaison. Although Valerie previously volunteered with Chicago 2016, she has no continuing financial relationship with them. Since the Administration already plans on vigorously supporting the United States’ sole 2016 Olympic bid, we felt that letting Valerie lead our efforts was strongly in the public interest.

Obama’s speech actually won it for Rio. When you talk about how great ethnic diversity is, Rio is much moreso than Chicago.

StubbleSpark on October 2, 2009 at 5:57 PM

“Almost unwinnable”, I’ll buy that; there was a lot of momentum behind Rio’s bid. But to come in in LAST place? I would have said that to be impossible. I would have put Madrid in last place simply because Barcelona hosted in 1992. With London hosting in 2012, it is almost automatically given to another continent for the following games. Tokyo hosted in 1964, but not unheard of to award them the games again so soon. Having had then in China in 2008 may have even had a slight impact not to award them to another Asian country so soon.

The IOC sent a message today by putting Chicago in last place. Spin it all they want, but the loss was huge.

That is why we leave it up to Mayors and Governors to do this stuff: they know who to contact, what to do and how to organize these sorts of things. It is a chance for them to shine and show how good our State and local governments are.

When you need the President, you have a problem.

And when the presentation is awful and the person doing the presenting is the President of the US, then you have a demonstrated inability to organize a PRESENTATION. If you can’t do that then you shouldn’t get the Olympics.

The President stuck his nose in where it didn’t belong because he knows nothing about governing a city or a State and working with other cities and States to pull off an event like this. Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, Atlanta: they all had good mayors and governors who could handle the Olympics. Chicago? They gots Barack. And that man hasn’t organized anything except a political campaign. He doesn’t know infrastructure, housing, coordinating between multiple municipal governments… and he does a Charlie Foxtrot at the IOC with the presentation?

If he wanted it to be all about him, then it is for that. And the grading by the IOC reflects his lack of experience and ability.

CNN equals Obama – both failures that just don’t get it.

During the 4 PM hour, Wolfman Blitz also trotted out CNN’s new meme on this-they aren’t telling their intellectually-challenged viewers that the US got bounced in the first round, all they are saying is that “the US lost the Olympics to Brazil”.

While this statement is technically correct, it’s also pure pandering and not to be confused with “journalism”.

Speaking of lies, Michelle Obama said she sat on her daddy’s lap to watch Carl Lewis. Fact: she’s only 3 years younger than Lewis.

First they sent in the big guns, or is that big buns of Oprah and Michelle, followed by the rock star and got, first out with a bullet?

WTF? Thats political gamesmanship?

Either Axle or the mouth has to go!

They’re a very close family.

Obama should have given the job to the marines Corps. The difficult jobs they do now; the impossible takes a little longer.

I posted another photoshop commemorating this day earlier, but here’s tomorrow’s headline - at least in the context of the Chicago-way (I know, this was actually a New York way, but you get my point…)
