CNN expert: Actually, Chicago’s Olympics bid was “almost unwinnable”
posted at 5:18 pm on October 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
Probably true, as I can’t think of any reason why Obama’s presence would have actively hurt their chances (although a Sun-Times columnist did rap him earlier this afternoon for an uninspired speech). If having him show up and give his shpiel wasn’t enough to put the city over the top, it stands to reason that nothing was. But, er, how come no one in the White House was bright enough to figure that out beforehand and advise him not to go, then? Says CNN’s Olympics expert of the IOC, “I don’t think they could have cared less if Obama showed up or not.” No one thought to clue Axelrod into that possibility before the plane took off from D.C.?
Meanwhile, an interesting point from Politico about whom Obama was really representing in Copenhagen:
Earlier this week, The White House flatly rejected the notion that Obama’s Chicago ties played any role in his decision or his support for the U.S. bid for the games.
“If it had been Los Angeles, I think the notion that the President would have done less because it was a different U.S. city just doesn’t hold a lot of water,” Press Secretary Robert Gibbs insisted earlier this week.
Some analysts find that claim impossible to believe.
“There’s no question that this whole exercise would not have happened had it not been Chicago. I can’t see him doing the same thing for Seattle or Sheboygan,” said Stephen Hess, a professor at George Washington University. He noted that Obama’s pitch for the city was deeply personal.
Me neither. Anyone think he would have fueled up Air Force One for New York or Miami, say? If not, then how was this some big gesture on behalf of an American Olympics bid rather than a Chicago bid, specifically? In fact, I’m not even sure it was a “Chicago bid” given the ambivalence inside the city about bringing the Olympics there and the very real possibility of tax hikes and layoffs to pay for everything. What it was was a Daley bid, which explains why, according to Chuck Todd, Daley worked every crony connection he had in the White House to get the city’s favorite son out there on his behalf. Bear that in mind the next time you see a liberal crying crocodile tears over how “un-American” it is to chuckle at The One’s failure today. He went to Copenhagen to do a favor for his corrupt hometown political machine and he flamed out big time. Boo hoo.

This is unbelievable. After spending 9 months of this year telling the entire world how sorry he is for America’s misdeeds and general badness and that the US doesn’t deserve exceptional status, he then expects that ‘he’ will win the games for the US by his very presence and that the IOC will be intimidated by the POTUS showing up.
It was a blatant attempt to steamroll a vote and ‘he’ got what he deserved. He practically dared the IOC to not award it to Chicago.
He should have sent Bertha Lewis along instead.

You know, I heard this and have a theory. obama is telling the world how bad America is and how we are now working to fix things, and IOC probably thought, “well, maybe we should wait to award it to them, until things are better.”
And that’s what I think may have happened, then again, they may have just wanted to rub it in obama’s face

FYI, James Warren (past Chicago Tribune Managing Editor) on The Ed Show (blech!) saying how “Chicago was a LONG SHOT all along” and also “IOC was overwhelmingly old, mostly Euro, white, male, etc”.

I appreciate that while I am over here in Iraq fighting for our country and friends are dying here and others needing reinforcements in Afghanistan, our country going down the tube economically, that the CDR in Chief has time to fly two jumbo jets over to Denmark because that is SUCH a priority! What is sad is that many of us saw this coming last year the day before the election and yet we have anchors getting tingle’s up their leg for this guy.
g2825m on October 2, 2009 at 6:18 PM
I’m betting this trip was all just to distract from the unemployment numbers released today. Sure, he took a lot of heat for this stupid trip, but his handlers probably thought it was better than the heat he’d have taken if, on an otherwise slow news day, the biggest story was the unemployment figures.
RightWinged on October 2, 2009 at 6:18 PM
Has anyone heard how much to two-jumbo jet traveling circus cost us?

I saw earlier, can’t remember where, the number $1.2 mill floating around. Don’t know if that is accurate or not.

Bishop: I did a search, and its $58,600.00 per hour to
fly AF/1:)
===========================================================
… This report assumes that flight operating costs are $56,518 per hour for Air Force One . These figures are based on the per-hour cost figures cited by GAO for fiscal year 2000, adjusted for inflation.

Wow, this is actually a step up — Given Michelle’s feelings about American until her husband’s election, I would have expected her to tell the IOC she sat on her daddy’s lap and watched Jim Hines and Lee Evans stage their protest at the ’68 Olympic Games.

Wait a minute….
is there a movement afoot in the US to get our retention span narrowed to hours?
Wasn’t it just days ago that the race was between Rio and Chicago and it was neck in neck…. and Obama wouldn’t be going to Europe for the vote unless it was in the bag?

But if chicago had gotten it. Oh boy, Obama would have been a hero and nobody else could have done what he did. The hype would be up to our ears. But no, So now they will blame everybody and everything under the sun as why we didnt get it. How many excuses have we heard -crime, M Jordan, anti-Americanism, people of chicago were not be hind it. Never had a chance in the first place, bush ect. Sorry but Obama and his backup singers (Michelle and Oprah) failed.

Some random thoughts on this whole episode:
- If getting the 2016 Olympics held in Chicago would be “in the bag” just by having Obama show up at the IOC, does that mean that whatever he said/did actually changed the panel’s mind and disqualified Chicago?
- Lack of executive experience glaringly obvious as Obama can’t make a sales pitch.
- What if Chicago’s chances to land the games were not as good as reported, and Obama believed (or was led to believe) that going to Copenhagen himself would cause the IOC to see things his way? Plays into his arrogance.
- What do American leftists think of European collectivists now that they’ve rejected their messiah?
- Also glad that Tokyo did not win the games, or we’d be treated to 10 minutes of Olympic coverage, in between hours upon hours of segments such as; “Hiroshima and Nagasaki: America was wrong”.
- I don’t have all the facts, but the IOC acted stupidly.
- The media has to know that they’ve tied themselves to the mast of a sinking ship. At some point, they’re going to have to save themselves and salvage whatever is left of what they think is their credibility. The good news for them is that Obama is providing daily opportunities to do just that. It’ll be interesting to see what issue(s) get(s) that ball rolling (if any), which outlets bail first (if any) and which ones stay aboard until the S.S. Obama hits the ocean floor.

Zero and Michelle-O got their sense of entitlement handed back to them by the IOC like their liver on a stick.
Adding to the absurdity is the wackily now out of place LA Times farticle today pimping Michelle-O as wearing a gold outfit “going for the gold.” An unintentional self-parody of the Obamas and the LA Times blind worship of them all wrapped into One seedy sales pitch by LA Times writer / hack Johanna Neuman.

This pisses me off more than anything. Okay, I would have been fine with Michelle O going to Copenhagen. (on her own dime)
Obama should have flown straight to Afghanistan and actually acted as CIC. He should seriously be doing the job that GW Bush was not afraid of doing. We have men and women DYING, and he’s all about making money for his friends in Chicago.

Sources have told me, on deep background, that the Chicago bid failed because of the participation of Michelle and Oprah. The appearance of Michelle in that gaudy gold mis-shapen tent, moaning about her sacrifices, really turned off delegates from some of the poorer nations but it was the appearance of “big as a small mountain Oprah” that sealed Chicago’s fate.
As one delegate told me: “here’s the richest woman in the world with more personal trainers, dietitians and chefs at her disposal than some nations and she’s even bigger than that plain woman in the gaudy tent. What kind of message would that send to young people about physical fitness and athletic excellence”.
[All of the above is a lie but I'm trying to get a job with a major media outfit.]

Apparently the IOC wasn’t as impressed with TOTUS as the Obots were.
sarainitaly on October 2, 2009 at 8:19 PM
With all the bad press coming out of Chi-town, the beatings, shootings, and the coolest summer in quite some time, I suspect that as the IOC committee prepared to vote they’d rather risk AIDS in South America than a 2×4 to the head in Chicago. By the way, they most likely got their info via the internet as they were all traveling to Copenhagen, tapping in via their handhelds. And to think, Barry recently wanted a kill switch for the internet to match his nuclear launch switch, and today he let the internet slip away too. Hope he somehow manages to hang on the the nuclear trigger. OOOOPS!! My bad. Hope he loses it in while holed up in the bunker.
Robert17 on October 2, 2009 at 8:24 PM
El Retardo Supremo.
If Chicago won the bid Obama would have taken credit and/or been given credit by a breathless media. If he’s going to get the credit for a success then he gets the blame for a failure. End of story.
But I daresay in a week I expect him to say “Let me be clear: I’ve always been consistent in believing Chicago wasn’t the best venue for the Olympics.”

Neo-con Artist on October 2, 2009 at 9:47 PM
Actually I thought the fix was in which is why Obama and his entourage made the trip in the first place. Obama’s trip back would have been a victory lap with perhaps even an unscheduled stop at Chicago to meet the adulating mob.
Instead we get an ignominious first round defeat-magified by expectations of success from his obsequious MSM sycophants- for the whole world to see and ‘all the perfumes in Arabia cannot erase the egg from thy stained face’.
Without a prearranged “agreement” with the IOC, Obama and his advisers should have realized that not even the Great One’s verbal metier could trump Rio’s pitch of hosting South America’s first olympics.

Chicago didn’t come in second, or even third, (the IOC comments that Japan acted as if they weren’t really interested. Chicago came in DEAD LAST. Dear Leader, the one the left says we were waiting for, the one that the left said would make the world love America.FAILED MISERABLY.
Coming in dead last means that the spent hundreds of thousands of US taxpayer dollars, and a huge lefties, CARBON FOOT PRINT, (big deal it means nothing as it’s made up anyhow), and accomplished:

Jeff from WI on October 3, 2009 at 6:21 AM
Didn’t the city’s plan place the Olympic Village on the south side of the city on the shore of Lake Michigan? Maybe the IOC was a little concerned about the south side’s “wilder” side. You know, the future of America settling their differences with a 2×4.
Just a thought.

$2-3 MILLION LOST just for the trip in Copenhagen. Shouldered by Federal money ie., all taxpayers.
$100 – 200 Million sunk cost for failed investment in Chicago. Not a problem. It’s Obama’s cronies’ money anyway.
The bright side: Conservatives in Chicago won’t suffer TAX HIKES DUE TO THE POTENTIAL “NET COSTS” OF OLYMPICS.
