Breaking: Chicago eliminated from Olympics voting — in first round; Update: Total shock in Chi-town; Update: Rio gets the games

posted at 11:31 am on October 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

You’ve got to be kidding. No link yet but stand by for updates.

Update: The president, the first lady, even Oprah — all of them showed up to make the pitch.

And they ended up being the very first city eliminated.

In a stunning development, Chicago was the first city eliminated on Friday in IOC voting to be host city for the 2016 Summer Olympics…

His wife tugged at IOC members’ heart strings by discussing her late father, who had multiple sclerosis. She recounted sitting on his lap, watching Olympians such as Carl Lewis and Nadia Comaneci compete, and how her father “taught me how to throw a ball and a mean right hook.”

“My dad would have been so proud to witness these games in Chicago,” she said.

It’s only right that I eat crap here for having insisted that this was a done deal and that The One wouldn’t dare risk his political capital on a completely needless humiliation. You’re a bigger sucker than I thought, champ.

Update: “Depression and shock” in Chicago.

The Daley Plaza crowd reacted to Chicago’s elimination in silence. Some members of the crowd were crying as they walked away. People blamed negative media attention on the bid and former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan’s lack of participation as reasons for the loss.

“We weren’t unified as a city. We didn’t get behind this enough,” said Rob Fox of Chicago.

“Michael Jordan didn’t show up,” said Margaret Johnson of Chicago. “His city asked him for help and he turned his back on us.”

Is that going to be the White House spin? It’s Michael Jordan’s fault?

Update: As expected, The One didn’t stick around to face the possibility of humiliation.

Throngs watching the voting in downtown Chicago’s Daley Plaza gasped in disappointment as the announcement was made.

United States Olympic Committee leaders appeared stunned by the news and had no comment as they left the voting hall. Mr. Obama was flying back to Washington at the time of the vote.

Update: Another potential scapegoat to go along with Michael Jordan: School violence.

Luciano Reyes speculated that Chicago was undone by a negative reputation internationally.

“The violence in the schools became an international issue, and all the corruption, the rest of the world just sees us as Crook Town,” said Reyes, 59, currently unemployed, who bought his first TV two decades ago specifically to watch the Olympics.

Update: There has to be a way to blame this on Bush somehow. Theories welcome in the comments!

Update: Open a browser tab, point it to this Tribune page, and just keep refreshing as reports of the shock over The God That Failed roll in. My favorite quote: “I really don’t know what happened. Maybe the ‘machine’ isn’t working.”

Update: To no one’s surprise, the games end up in Brazil.

Michelle Obama actually said this:

“Some of my best memories are sitting on my dad’s lap, cheering on Olga and Nadia, Carl Lewis and others for their brilliance and perfection.”

Very, very, very poorly written. She meant to reference sitting on her Dad’s lap for the ’72 and ’76 memories, but unfortunately didn’t separate Lewis out from that pile. Could have been a dumb oversight, Could have been poor speech delivery.

You choose to see it as a deliberate lie. That says a lot about you, while you’re on the topic of analysing human beings’ inner workings.

And wtf was the POTUS’s wife doing giving a speech to the IOC anyways? Not her job, FFS.

I’m glad RIo got it, but there are going to be a lot of street people “disappearing” over the next 6 years.

Dave Rywall on October 2, 2009 at 5:10 PM

This event is an Obamateurism of the week/month award. No wait, his dithering over Afghanistan tops this.

This is what happens when an affirmative action, politically correct, inexperienced egomaniac gets the slightest bit of responsibility. Obama is an incompetent moron. Period.

BottomLine5 on October 2, 2009 at 5:10 PM

And when will FLOTUS ever pick a “cause” to put her beautiful arms around? All the First Ladies choose a cause. But the current FLOTUS seems uninterested and it’s been almost a year now since she knew she would be FLOTUS for four years. What’s the holdup?

Mr_Magoo on October 2, 2009 at 5:10 PM

Actually, I take it back.

The American right sees it as Obama’s failure.

The rest of the world sees it as Chicago’s. Just like they see Tokyo’s as Tokyo’s or Madrid’s as Madrid’s.

Chicago was kind of an odd city to go for it anyway and I’m glad they didn’t get it. It’s pissy and partisan to take pleasure in the failure.

But keep blowing it out of proportion if that’s what you wanna do.

Dave Rywall on October 2, 2009 at 3:42 PM

Chicago didn’t deserve it, RIO was the best choice and congratulations to them.

I am not celebrating Obama’s failure but it is a failure and a needless one at that. People are not blowing this out of proportion, this is a huge embarassment for an increasingly inconsequential President. In a time where his “extended hand” diplomacy is laughed at by Russia, Iran, China and even our allies in NATO; he desperately needed some sort of victory. He couldn’t even convince the IOC to give him what he wanted. They voted him out in the first round! Why the heck did he go if it wasn’t already in the bag? As insignificant as the Olympics may be, this is just another trip he comes back empty handed from; Iran and the rest of the world are certainly watching.

Yes absolutely Chicago didn’t deserve it.
But not because it’s Obama’s home town,
not because it’s a blue town,
not because some gangs attacked some guy with some wood planks
not because you think it’s a crooked town (name one that isn’t)

The only people who see this as Obama’s failure are the people on the right. Everybody else blames the lame bid from a city that never should have bid in the first place.

From the sidelines, it appears that Obama came in as the “closer”. Why else was his presence required? When the closer blows the game in the 9th inning, focus tends to gravitate in his direction. Why shouldn’t Obama receive similar scrutiny?

For sure he went in to be a closer. He failed.
And as I said, the blame on him is only being cast by your side of the aisle in a spitefully childish manner. Everyone else blames the bid from a city that never should have bid.

That none of you clowns gave a sh*t about the bid until he showed up speaks volumes about your intentions: to simply complain, complain, complain. I wonder how you would have felt about the bid if it was some red state city.

Chicago is one of the most corrupt and crooked cities in the country. Spare me your moral equivocation because they don’t much dirtier than Chicago.

But having said that, and spitting out the other words you put in my mouth, I am not cheering that Chicago did not get it, I am happy that Rio DID get it because they clearly wanted it. I think their money could go elsewhere with 6 million living in squalor, but this is what they wanted and good for them.

No matter how you wish to rationalize it, this is a failure on Obama’s part and an embarassment. You could even see it in his face and hear it in his voice when he gave his little 30 second speech afterwards, but enjoy life in your bubble.

As a citizen of Northern Ill I can tell you that we were very interested in the bid. Most of us did NOT want the Olympics here, period.
It has been generally accepted by the city that if Obama showed up we would get the games. There was a huge gathering downtown to celebrate the victory.
That he showed up and it was a big no, is wonderful.

Boston, Massachusetts–Former Red Sox player Bill Buckner, who infamously lost a World Series for the team in 1986 by letting a ball slip under his glove and through his legs, was moved to tears as President Obama relieved him of his “biggest sports fail” title by losing a bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games in Chicago after an unprecedented personal appeal.

“I want to thank the president for dropping the ball in a truly spectacular fashion that overshadows even my notorious gaffe,” said Buckner.

Glenn Beck didn’t think Obama was a gambler, but he was giving the President too much credit. However, he also listed the names of Chicago cronies who would benefit from this deal, while the taxpayers knew they would get stuck with the tab. A city famous for its corruption was ashamed to have the world’s focus trained on it, and after all, look how embarrassingly that turned out for Atlanta, GA.

I hope President Obama learned an important lesson about the limits of his his personal appeal, the true functions of the Office of the President and the way the world works. But I doubt it.

You see, that wealth redistribution crap only goes so far, because it has to get back to the people that actually created it. You’re kidding right? This tears away the veneer that the whole world loves the filthy lying coward in the White House. That he is a rock star overseas since he isn’t GWB and he apologizes wherever he goes. The IOC was supposed to be falling over themselves to support Obama.

That didn’t happen. Even those who don’t follow politics saw the rat bastard traitor go to Copenhagen with a swagger that implied it was in the bag and return with his tail between his legs. Chicago didn’t just lose, they came in last despite the fact that Oprah, Obama, and others were there to impress the committee. There is real shock among the most faithful members of the cult that the mythical Obama fell flat (so of course it is all GWB’s fault).

I was with you as well. I assumed that for the President to make such a significant investment of personal/political capital that the fix was in.

It should give one pause to consider that such a lavish investment of capital was made when in fact there was no safety net.

But I CANNOT STAND Crook County crooks, Mayor ShortShanks and Obama all making money out of this…. and God knows what these corrupt pols would have done if they landed the GAmes.

I am also THRILLED that the IOC literally delivered a slap on the face of the mega celebrities – Oprah, Michelle, Obama in that order… who did they think they were ?

The shameless moron who has had ONE converasation with McChrystal and HAS NEVER VISITED the troops in Afghanistan suddenly finds time to go to Copenhgagen on tax payer money – it is only JUST that he fails and the city’s bid fails.

And I am glad that Michael Jordan didnt team up with these losers – he probably knew better than campaigning for Chicago.

Riiiiiiio in 2016 !!!!! That’s going to be hot.. with all the Samba dancing women..ohhh la la

IOC TO OBAMA:

“Your presentation was so self-impressive, your wife was sleeveless, Oprah was hungry and your Education Secretary was not very educating. In addition, Ms. Jarrett was rather too “brand” and your other thuggers were a bit how do we say…thuggish. Mr. World President we wish the best….and by the way….who is this Mrs. Palin we keep hearing about?”

NEXT UP:
OBAMACARE…….Pray that it dies next week in infighting like we’ve never seen before. Granny needs the prayers.

HkMP5SDPW on October 2, 2009 at 8:29 PM

Chicago was undone by it’s reputation for corruption, period.

But I’m kinda glad it isn’t going to be in the US. I don’t think zero would stop a terrorist attack on the games or the city, in fact, I think he was actually hoping for an attack. Yes, THAT is what kind of scumbag he is.

Now we don’t have to worry about it, win #1, and win #2 is that zero loses all he’d gain from the distraction and opportunity of a crisis a terrorist attack there would give him.

Spiritk9 on October 2, 2009 at 8:31 PM

Well well, the faux messiah can’t even pull off an easy publicity stunt with the powerless Olympic commitee. The world’s dictators and terrorists must be simply licking their chops at the opportunity to take on the boy wonder, anticipating an easy victory. Where is the idiot hiding, that called him the King of the World?

Dave Rywall on October 2, 2009 at 3:42 PM

actually the rest of the world in the sense of the UK anyway clearly sees it as Obamas personal failure

to wit:
FT:
They dont allow quotes so you need to go read it
and of course UK Times:
There has been a growing narrative taking hold about Barack Obama’s presidency in recent weeks: that he is loved by many, but feared by none; that he is full of lofty vision, but is actually achieving nothing with his grandiloquence.

Chicago’s dismal showing yesterday, after Mr Obama’s personal, impassioned last-minute pitch, is a stunning humiliation for this President. It cannot be emphasised enough how this will feed the perception that on the world stage he looks good — but carries no heft.

Congratulations, Rio De Janeiro!

Ohh, Barack’s in trouble now. The Chicago Bosses told him to get them the Olympics and he failed.

funny how he is almost overwhelmed with all these awesome responsibilities and still finds time to jump when Chicago calls.

Dressing up Chicago for an Olympic bid is like putting lipstick on a pig.

Pelayo on October 2, 2009 at 9:50 PM

I have had a big smile on my face since the news. Egotistical asshole meets reality. I can’t stop laughing my ass off. What a light weight. No one takes this tool seriously. Not even the Olympics. I’m sure the Taliban are shaking in their boots knowing this limp wrist-ed tool is in charge, This would all be hilarious if not for the permanent damage the amateur in chief is doing to this country and the fact that lives are at stake. TOOL…epic fail…still LMAO!

jwp1964 on October 2, 2009 at 9:50 PM

Is the IOC going to be accused of “acting stupidly”?

Will they be accused of “profiling” or will Barack, Michelle and Oprah be miffed that they got caught while “Promoting Chicago While Black”?

these are things that the peeps just gotta know…

Meanwhile Sarah’s back in Alaska makin no comment.

Thats’ right Sarah save those Facebook posts for serious business like sinkin Urkels HealthScare!

Hey Pinnochio maybe ya should have asked Sarah to fire off a Facebook post to the IOC members…. couldn’t a done any worse!

BBBWWWHHHHAAAAA! Why go Pinnochio?
Did Valarie Jarrett have some pictures of you and a skinny blonde she threatened to show MamaObama ifn’ you dint git her the Lympics?

dhunter on October 2, 2009 at 10:08 PM

Wow, now how is zero gonna pay Chicago for putting him in the
POTUS position. Gotta find some way to get big cash payback to the crooks. Lets see–there’s all that slum housing that was going to be torn down for the games–maybe a fire?
Hummm—a big fire-naaaa–been done before.

Red State cities aren’t flat busted, highly taxed, corrupt cesspools that no real American WANTS
to have to live in.
They don’t drive real Americans away by taxing their asses off and invitin the murderin lazy asses in by givin em free stuff and bannin handguns.

Red State cities don’t NEED the Olympics to bail them out financially, only corruptocrat, Dem, cesspools need try that

Some did , but the United States doesn’t. We could have sent Hillary or Obiden or one of the 37 czars, but no Pinnochio and MamaObama had to go on separate taxpayer funded planes and make it all about themselves.

I’m not so sure they didn’t think it was a lock I don’t think Pinnochio would have had the courage to go had he thought he would lose unless he was TOLD to go!

Yeah, it just doesn’t seem wise for a US president to put his prestige on the line for the friggin’ Olympics. And face it, if Chicago had won the games, Obama would right now be praised to the skies by the same people who are now saying that it was Chicago’s fault.

Dave Rywall on October 2, 2009 at 5:29 PM

First, this has nothing to do with being happy about “America failing”. America didn’t fail. Chicago failed. There is a difference. Second, the reason this is so delicious is that Barry thinks all he needs to do is give a speech about himself and he will get what he wants. This failure proved how incompetent this man is. No U.S.President has ever gone begging for the Olympics on behalf of a US city. Doing so simply makes us look like a banana republic.

Rio simply had a better presentation. For one, they said they could host the Olympics without raising taxes. Think Chicago could have done that? Hardly. All of Illinois would be paying forever for hosting.
In the end it was hard to argue the fact that of the top 10 economies in the world, Brazil is the only one that hasn’t hosted an Olympics. Nor has any country in South America. Which now leaves Antartica as the only continent that has not hosted an Olympics.
And another reason…there is a long-standing financial dispute between the USOC and the IOC. There is no love lost for the US at the IOC.

And, many IOC members were actually pissed at the circus caused by Barry showing up.
