Breaking: Chicago eliminated from Olympics voting — in first round; Update: Total shock in Chi-town; Update: Rio gets the games

posted at 11:31 am on October 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

You’ve got to be kidding. No link yet but stand by for updates.

Update: The president, the first lady, even Oprah — all of them showed up to make the pitch.

And they ended up being the very first city eliminated.

In a stunning development, Chicago was the first city eliminated on Friday in IOC voting to be host city for the 2016 Summer Olympics…

His wife tugged at IOC members’ heart strings by discussing her late father, who had multiple sclerosis. She recounted sitting on his lap, watching Olympians such as Carl Lewis and Nadia Comaneci compete, and how her father “taught me how to throw a ball and a mean right hook.”

“My dad would have been so proud to witness these games in Chicago,” she said.

It’s only right that I eat crap here for having insisted that this was a done deal and that The One wouldn’t dare risk his political capital on a completely needless humiliation. You’re a bigger sucker than I thought, champ.

Update: “Depression and shock” in Chicago.

The Daley Plaza crowd reacted to Chicago’s elimination in silence. Some members of the crowd were crying as they walked away. People blamed negative media attention on the bid and former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan’s lack of participation as reasons for the loss.

“We weren’t unified as a city. We didn’t get behind this enough,” said Rob Fox of Chicago.

“Michael Jordan didn’t show up,” said Margaret Johnson of Chicago. “His city asked him for help and he turned his back on us.”

Is that going to be the White House spin? It’s Michael Jordan’s fault?

Update: As expected, The One didn’t stick around to face the possibility of humiliation.

Throngs watching the voting in downtown Chicago’s Daley Plaza gasped in disappointment as the announcement was made.

United States Olympic Committee leaders appeared stunned by the news and had no comment as they left the voting hall. Mr. Obama was flying back to Washington at the time of the vote.

Update: Another potential scapegoat to go along with Michael Jordan: School violence.

Luciano Reyes speculated that Chicago was undone by a negative reputation internationally.

“The violence in the schools became an international issue, and all the corruption, the rest of the world just sees us as Crook Town,” said Reyes, 59, currently unemployed, who bought his first TV two decades ago specifically to watch the Olympics.

Update: There has to be a way to blame this on Bush somehow. Theories welcome in the comments!

Update: Open a browser tab, point it to this Tribune page, and just keep refreshing as reports of the shock over The God That Failed roll in. My favorite quote: “I really don’t know what happened. Maybe the ‘machine’ isn’t working.”

Update: To no one’s surprise, the games end up in Brazil.

Why do you HATE America? This is a loss for the country, stop making it about Obama. Also, Bush was one who chose Chicago to represent us for the 2016 Olympics. Maybe the loss is his…

Ris4victory on October 2, 2009 at 3:02 PM

Just heard this on the radio on my way home and almost drove off the road.

The FIRST ROUND? Are you kidding?

This guy can’t get anything from the international community, not even the Olympics which was thought to be a sure thing (why else would he go?). He can’t get NATO to commit more troops to Afghanistan, he can’t build a consensus on Iran, he can’t get India or China to cripple their economies with the Kyoto treaty and he can’t even be taken seriously by both the Israeli and Palestinian leaders. Maybe the Citizens of the World like the guy but the Leaders of the World think he’s a joke.

He’s like that guy who is always lending out money and doing favors for other people but when it comes to reciprocity he is left standing alone, with his extended hand.

as for the decision itself, it was the right one. Chicago is a pit and does not deserve the Olympics. Rio is a fun and exciting place and this will be the first time the Olympics come to South America. Good for them. Still a waste of money though.

This while sad shows you the complete
and utter arrogance of the Communist leftists
running the main stream news media..

They like the obamas really thought that
Just because the obama has been crowned THE FIRST BLACK KING
Just because his wife showed up and is BLACK
Just because the presenter was BLACK
Just because the presentation showed BLACK musicians

That they didnt have to put any real effort into the presentation..

And they got exactly what they deserved (ZILCH)..
IDIOTS..

I watched the presentation and it sucked so bad
that i even told my son at 12:00 P.M last nigth that
They would loose the olympics..

The presentation was so bad the only thing good in it
was the jazz guitarist playing lead (i like jazz guitar)..

Again i am sorry to the people of chicago
but i am now waiting for you to start blaming
George Bush
The nba
the news media for reporting on the two brutal murders on uyour streets

But you wont admit that you lost because
You didnt put the effort into it and DEFINE
WHY they should choose chicago over say
Pakistan..?

veteranoutrage on October 2, 2009 at 3:20 PM

The Obamas, especially Michelle, gave terrible speeches. They tried an emotional pitch and it probably pissed off everyone in the room. Really, Michelle? Do it for your daddy? Do it because people in Chicago work really really hard? Do you think people in other countries don’t work really really hard, Michelle? Do you really think pitching America as poor underprivileged beggars sat well with the IOC?

Ronnie on October 2, 2009 at 3:21 PM

My son manages a raw-bar so the place was packed for the lunch-crowd. He told me that when the announcement was made that Rio was selected, the room got quiet….and then everyone laughed!! Oh boy, I laughed, too. It was like a “nah-nanahnanah” moment

Ted Torgerson on October 2, 2009 at 3:44 PM

Yeah, Lewis won four gold medals at the 1984 Olympics, and Michelle was born in 1964. She was definitely too old to be sitting on daddy’s lap when Lewis competed. The IOC knew it was just a made up story when she told it, along with the rest of the crap she and her husband fed them in their speeches.

I am not a psychologist or a psychiatrist. However I spent most of my teaching career working with mentally challenged students and the last few years before I retired, as the overseeing instructional specialist of students with Autism spectrum disorders in my school.
When I read about Michelle’s lying about sitting on her father’s lab as a little girl, when to do so she would have been twenty years old, I wondered just how deep the willingness to lie went in the Whitehouse’s first family. I Googled Pathological liar and Narcissism since it is a related condition. Here is a brief on what I found. Does it seem to describe in multiple ways anyone or ones, we know?
Pathological liars may be suffering from histrionic personality disorder or narcissistic personality disorders. You will never top them in their own mind, because they have a concerted need to be better than everyone else. They “construct” a reality around themselves. They don’t value the truth. When confronted they tend to redirect the conversation to yours or others wrong doing, denying any wrong doing of their own. They will contradict what they say or have said, and will never admit they lied or said something that was not true. They will go to extremes to make you believe they are truthful. They may admit to a lie, or more likely, change or adapt, or rewrite history if challenged on a lie so that they can place the blame on anyone or event other than themselves.
Pathological liars often cannot tell that they are lying; they actually believe the lie as soon as they say it.
One statement said that “Slime-ball liars lie about things that make them look better or embellish to get attention.” , but this is not mean they are a pathological liar. I wonder if it is possible that this shoe is the other shoe that fits.
Pathological liars do not necessarily lie without knowing they are lying. They also lie to support a fantasy of themselves, to hide the fact that they feel inferior. The more attention they receive that makes them feel they are worthy, the more they will lie to continue it. They seek close relationships with those they feel comfortable around, those that will accept anything they say and support them even if they know they are lying. If that relationship changes or they become a threat to how he views himself or lies he has told, they will disavow or distance themselves from that person or situation. They are not concerned for the feelings of others that they feel do not view them favorably. A pathological liar is often very self centered.
Pathological liars tend to be average to a little above average in intelligence. They tend to be able to speak well even if lacking in other cognitive areas
Part of being a pathological liar is narcissism. It has been increasingly recognized that BHO is narcissistic.
Narcissism usually can be traced to a parent who was physically or emotionally abusive. They have been made to feel they are never good enough yet often given unattainable goals in life. They will never admit to their problem and lie to cover it up. They will give the impression that they are highly accomplished at anything and everything they do.
When does this become a disorder? The Mayo Clinic defines that in this way.
Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. They believe that they’re superior to others and have little regard for other people’s feelings. But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism.
Out of 16 characteristics of a person with a Narcissistic personality disorder listed by the Mayo Clinic, Obama displays 11 of them.
Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by dramatic, emotional behavior, in the same category as histrionic, antisocial and borderline personality disorders. They may come across as conceited, boastful or pretentious. They may become very impatient or angry if things do not happen as they want them to. They may also seek out others they think have the same special talents, power and qualities. They have trouble handling anything that may be perceived as criticism. In order to make themselves feel better, they may react with rage or contempt and efforts to belittle the other person or persons to make themselves appear better.

Nah, it was nothing before, and it’s still nothing now. This is the worst economy in 26 years and that is a “failure”? The possibility of losing the dollar as the universal standard–and that’s a failure to worry about?

It’s just funny when perceptions meet reality. Obama failed when he passed a party-machine bill and called it “stimulus”. He failed when he strong-armed the government and the UAW into 80% of GM. Those are real failures–and I take no joy in those.

Actually saving the taxpayers billions? That’s not bad. I hear that the world likes us better now that we have Obama in office. But it’s really failed to count for anything so far.

–Don’t most of those apply to politicans in general? I thought Cheney, in particular, showed several of those traits.

Why is that insane? There were lots of people that committed a great deal of time in preparing the Chicago Olympics bid. It’s natural they are disappointed.

Ted Torgerson on October 2, 2009 at 3:44 PM

True. Although, I have no idea or background information if the subjects in the picture had any time and resource devoted in the bid.

jerrytbg on October 2, 2009 at 4:06 PM

Wait! I just read that this is the first time that the Olympics has ever been located in South America. So Obama wanted to rack up another one for America rather than spread the wealth down to South America?

Isn’t he worried that there might be some previous bias or xenophobia in avoiding a South American venue? What an American elitist!

Axeman on October 2, 2009 at 4:06 PM

For those who missed it on another thread this morning

The Olympics are an excellent party. It would be great if Chicago got them. If Obama can push Chicago over the top, more power to him.

And, the harsh political reality is that Bush’s influence on the way foreigners perceived America was largely negative and he did become a poster boy for a bragging, bullyish. violent nation that had abandoned its founding ideals. Unfair perhaps, but true.

and yet millions of people each year beg to be let into this nation. People are dying to come here. literally. There is a disconnect between your ‘truth’ and peoples actions. It is true though that we have the worst system in the world, except for all the others. So please continue.

His triumph is in marked contrast to President Obama, who took a calculated risk to abandon his domestic agenda for 24 hours to personally address the IOC membership on Friday morning.

It backfired spectacularly when his former home town was humiliated in the first round of voting, attracting just 18 of the 95 available votes and trailing four votes behind long-time outsider Tokyo.
