Breaking: Chicago eliminated from Olympics voting — in first round; Update: Total shock in Chi-town; Update: Rio gets the games

posted at 11:31 am on October 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

You’ve got to be kidding. No link yet but stand by for updates.

Update: The president, the first lady, even Oprah — all of them showed up to make the pitch.

And they ended up being the very first city eliminated.

In a stunning development, Chicago was the first city eliminated on Friday in IOC voting to be host city for the 2016 Summer Olympics…

His wife tugged at IOC members’ heart strings by discussing her late father, who had multiple sclerosis. She recounted sitting on his lap, watching Olympians such as Carl Lewis and Nadia Comaneci compete, and how her father “taught me how to throw a ball and a mean right hook.”

“My dad would have been so proud to witness these games in Chicago,” she said.

It’s only right that I eat crap here for having insisted that this was a done deal and that The One wouldn’t dare risk his political capital on a completely needless humiliation. You’re a bigger sucker than I thought, champ.

Update: “Depression and shock” in Chicago.

The Daley Plaza crowd reacted to Chicago’s elimination in silence. Some members of the crowd were crying as they walked away. People blamed negative media attention on the bid and former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan’s lack of participation as reasons for the loss.

“We weren’t unified as a city. We didn’t get behind this enough,” said Rob Fox of Chicago.

“Michael Jordan didn’t show up,” said Margaret Johnson of Chicago. “His city asked him for help and he turned his back on us.”

Is that going to be the White House spin? It’s Michael Jordan’s fault?

Update: As expected, The One didn’t stick around to face the possibility of humiliation.

Throngs watching the voting in downtown Chicago’s Daley Plaza gasped in disappointment as the announcement was made.

United States Olympic Committee leaders appeared stunned by the news and had no comment as they left the voting hall. Mr. Obama was flying back to Washington at the time of the vote.

Update: Another potential scapegoat to go along with Michael Jordan: School violence.

Luciano Reyes speculated that Chicago was undone by a negative reputation internationally.

“The violence in the schools became an international issue, and all the corruption, the rest of the world just sees us as Crook Town,” said Reyes, 59, currently unemployed, who bought his first TV two decades ago specifically to watch the Olympics.

Update: There has to be a way to blame this on Bush somehow. Theories welcome in the comments!

Update: Open a browser tab, point it to this Tribune page, and just keep refreshing as reports of the shock over The God That Failed roll in. My favorite quote: “I really don’t know what happened. Maybe the ‘machine’ isn’t working.”

Update: To no one’s surprise, the games end up in Brazil.

Blowback

I feel kind of guilty that I’m so pleased that King and Queen Obama, and The Big O got p’wnd, because the US is the laughing stock of the world once again.

Thanks King Obama, for making us look stupid once again.

Now go call McChrystal and make some decisions on how to win the war.

Actually we love our country and are sooo happy we won’t, when times are tough, have to rebuild Chicago with our federal taxes…and so are many Chicagoans.

Obama had globally badmouthed this country for the last nine months. I think the IOC believed him.

WHO hates America? mmm mmm mmm!

marybel on October 2, 2009 at 1:38 PM

This administration is such an embarassment. These people are truly not ready for prime time. I may be wrong, but didn’t Obama teach law? Didn’t he look several moves ahead and anticipate the results of not winning this ill-concieved pitch?
Pride cometh before a fall.
Weakness is not helpful at a time like this. America is starving for leadership and there is none to be found.

I am deeply proud to be an American. I want nothing but the best for our country. We are being ravaged by the Obamanation and his antics and failures and refusal to tend to business and do the things that are and would be natural to any American. Losing the Olympics is the best for us for now. We have NO money and until corruption is cleaned up it is offensive to give this money to the thugs and street hustlers from Obama’s home town. Obama doesn’t have the same sense, feel, values, culture, history, gut, (black or white or green, it is NOT a matter of color) – he has no American in him. He hates America and we will NOT prosper until we vote him out of office.

Obama’s Olympic failure will only add to doubts about his presidency

There has been a growing narrative taking hold about Barack Obama’s presidency in recent weeks: that he is loved by many, but feared by none; that he is full of lofty vision, but is actually achieving nothing with his grandiloquence.

Chicago’s dismal showing today, after Mr Obama’s personal, impassioned last-minute pitch, is a stunning humiliation for this President. It cannot be emphasised enough how this will feed the perception that on the world stage he looks good — but carries no heft.

Sheikh Yerbouti on October 2, 2009 at 2:05 PM

Tokyo’s “no” vote came very quickly after it was announced that Chicago was eliminated. Do you suppose that the votes were so low for Chicago and Tokyo that there was no need to have a vote on the remaining three and instead went straight to the vote between Rio and Madrid? I’d love to know how many votes Chicago got.

Mr. Obama was flying back to Washington at the time of the vote.

Obama thought all those hugs from Chavez et al was because they liked him?

Rio, land of peace and security

The Oylympics are a mix of ‘what’s in it for me’ and ‘what are you going to do for us’ combined with ‘you bore me’ and ‘time to move on’.

The world press has been spinning on dreary for a long time now. Obama doesn’t know it yet, but when he won the election, the dynamics of the US became boring. Two rich (black) ladies talking about how fulfilled they will be if they get their way won’t cut it.

If only Obama could rewind the clock and not go to Copenhagen. He smoked a lot of valuable image. He could have stayed home and had dog-and-pony shows with the generals and talked about his goal of getting the Opympics to Chicago in time to celebrate the end of War

Really? And why would it be that only the African-American community would benefit from the billions of dollars of federal funds graft and bribes that would have rolled in to Chicago.

The Bamster will try to defend by launching an aggressive offense against something, to regain control over the narrative. Probably first he’ll direct Reid-Pelosi to cram the health care bill down our throats at any cost. After that, wonder what it will be.

Chicago should have at least finished 2nd..they had a stong bid in terms of hosting the Games.

There is a buzzing in the crowd as Obama steps to the plate for Chicago. The MSM describes the atmosphere as they are ready to pronounce a win for Chicago. Chris Matthews says the tingle in his leg could not be any stronger. Michelle and Oprah wave to the adoring crowd. The crown suddenly becomes silent waiting for the first pitch to Obama. “Strike one” yells the IOC umpire. Obama steps back waving to the crowd assuring them it was only the first pitch. Suddenly the IOC umpire sticks his thumb in the air and yells “you’re out”. Obama slinks from the plate stunned that he lost for Chicago. Michelle mutters four letter curse words and Oprah wonders how many viewers she would lose. The MSM tries to spin it as a moral victory. Matthews tingle turns to a tinkle and Olbermann prepares to announce the IOC worst person in the world. Meanwhile the normal average American is laughing their head off at this buffoon. HOW SWEET IT IS!

The face of EPIC fail!!!!

In Rio, our athletes will have a chance to take home gold.

In Obama’s Chicago (“I am not interested in victory”), in the interest in FAIRNESS, all gold medals will be redistributed to athletes who lose.

IMHO, the ‘rest of the story’ involves 0bama getting shown the utter contempt he richly deserved:(anything from cold shoulders to out-loud laughter) and ending with him being effectively told “No way, Hosea. Now go crawl back into your playpen and leave this to the big boys.”

But they want BHO to think they’re all impressed by him.

How can you “love” someone for whom you have no respect?

I think the mask is coming off… they don’t “love” Obama, what they love is his hatred for America and his plans to bring her to her knees.

Jim Zorn is the “beloved” coach of the Redskins… beloved by us Eagles fans, that is!

I still say Barry screwed up by not suing to get Rio, Tokyo, and Madrid removed from the ballot.

Wait a second – “violence” is to blame for not naming Chicago, but they gave it to …. Rio!?

Time to re-think that one.

Just saw this article linked from Drudge:

It was obviously written before the vote. I wonder if the little weasel will send the critics to Rio now. hehe

Forgive me if it’s already been said on the first 13 pages, but:

Rahm Emanuel, the Chicagoan who is chief of staff for Obama, has an answer: “You know, we’ll make sure they get some good seats once Chicago does host the games.”

PRICE-FRIGGIN’-LESS!!

Heh. I am working and missing all the fun this morning! I guess this is what happens when you don’t send an advance team of ACORN and SEIU thugs to ensure the vote comes out the “right” way.

This is really good news for us though. First of all, I’m pretty sure I heard Rush say the other day that like 80% of Chicagoans don’t even WANT the games. Yeah, geniuses, it’s tough to be “united as a city” when the majority don’t want what you want. As far as I’m concerned this is a victory for Chicagoans against the grifters that run the city. Second, I think it further demonstrates that the bloom is off Teh One’s rose overseas. I figured it would take non-Americans a lot longer to grow less impressed with him than it would us, but I guess when you aren’t subjected to a fawning media 24/7 and your kids aren’t coming home singing hymns about Dear Leader, reality sets in a little quicker.

Only three years and some “change” to go!

Go Rio!
