Axelrod: We got robbed on Olympics because of “politics”

posted at 12:44 pm on October 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The ultimate irony in sour grapes since the French lost a wine contest in the mid-1970s to California.  What White House has ever indulged in more elbow-throwing for its pet causes than the Obama White House, after all?  Just this week, we heard from a Democratic challenger in the Colorado primary that revealed an attempt to buy him out of the race with a position at USAID.  Complaining about politics from this White House is like the Yankees griping about being put at a disadvantage from the free-agent system.

And yet, here we have David Axelrod, attempting to recover from the dumbest political gaffe of the administration by blaming the very international politics Barack Obama tried to exploit:

Top White House adviser David Axelrod says “politics” played a key role in the International Olympic Committee’s decision to reject President Obama’s appeal in support of Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics.

In an interview moments ago on CNN, Axelrod said, “I don’t view this as a repudiation of the president or the first lady. I think that there are politics everywhere, and there were politics inside that room.” Axelrod said that a former head of the IOC was leading Madrid’s effort for the games, and others involved in other Olympic bids also had connections with the IOC. “As with any process like this, there are all kinds of crosscurrents in the room, there are relationships,” Axelrod said.

Asked for details, Axelrod said, “I’m not suggesting anything nefarious…I’m not suggesting anything untoward happened. There are politics around every process, and there were here as well…There were relationships that paid off for some of the other cities.”

Why did Obama go to Copenhagen in the first place?  He and his staff thought that he could use his supposedly tremendous international popularity to bully the IOC into picking Chicago.  Now they’re complaining that the IOC had other politics to consider, and that somehow that was unfair.

Boo fricking hoo.

Why did the White House put the prestige of the American presidency on the line for the 2016 Olympiads in the first place?  Even Al Gore seemed taken aback by that earlier this week, and warned that Obama had better not come back empty-handed, lest he look like a fool.  They seem to have an inordinately high opinion of their own influence on world leaders and organizations, and Obama apparently has no one to whisper Sic transit gloria in his ear when he embarks on these triumphs.

In short, this debacle closely resembles Greek warnings about the crippling nature of hubris.  What an embarrassment.

Update (AP): Here’s more spin this afternoon from Axelrod, mindlessly droning, as he must, that of course The One would needlessly stake his international political celebrity on this humiliating clusterfark all over again if he had to.

Come on, A-holerod. Your boss already looks like a giant pathetic tool. Don’t start the ‘We wuzz robbed’ spin; it makes him look even more flaccid and ineffective, kind of like a giant broken penis.

I once knew a man named Barack
Who thought the Olympics were a lock.
He flew to Copenhagen
But got smacked upside his noggin
And came home to the US in shock.

PatMac on October 2, 2009 at 2:38 PM

Axelrod is a frickin nimrod.

Torch on October 2, 2009 at 2:41 PM

When the most historic building in our history signifying the American triumph of freedom and capitalism (the Empire State Building)is owned by communist China and lit up in the colors of Mao to celebrate the communist revolution there….why should we get the Olympics?

At this point in our history, it’s not a given that by 2016 we will still be a viable country able to host an Olympics.

Goodeye_Closed on October 2, 2009 at 2:42 PM

I have to agree that we shouldn’t be giving in to Obama schadenfreude, no matter how tempting. It would have been great to get another Olympics for the US, if not in Chicago then someplace less corrupt and union-ridden (but I repeat myself).

Boo fricking hoo.

LOL! Yeah, what a bunch of crybabies. They have to blame everything on someone else, then spin it to benefit their liberal agenda.

I was watching glenn beck on fox last night when they interrupted his show for the Fox news alert.

Curious both my son and I watched
What followed was a COMPLETE FIASCO
This was worse than the microsoft commercials my son laughs at so much..

I mean i knew within 1 minute of the presentation starting that they wernt going to win ..

And as i watched the presentation finish the woman after the first presentation stated now isnt that a fun place?

I said to myself oh NO..
You dumbsh*t..
Because right as she said that i thought of the two gang murders live on video all over the world and i said to my son “well at least they already have a rifle range”
In the streets..

the only thing i saw was a bunch of fly overs and a halfway good jazz song (i like jazz guitar).. so that
was the best part of the entire presentation..
The jazz guitarist playing some nice lead..

That was it there was absolutly nothing else..

Look the presentation was so cheesy and so bad i could have done better (which isnt saying much believe me)..

But the whole thing of these people just grinning and thinking that their cheesy video was going to somehow win over the olympic organizers shows the democrats arrogance.

Personally i think the following occurred…

They put together a slick ad campaign within a month
and then figured that
Just because obama (who is black) showeds up
along with his wife who is black
and the presenter is black

and they figured if they showed a bunch of jazz playing musicians who were black and a quick pic of a guy in a wheelchair that they had it in the BAG…

WRONG..

The whole plan was the following and shows the dumb ass liberal mindset.

The democrats thought IF
A. barack is here
B. His wife is here
C. the presenter is black
D. the Jazz musician is black
E. We throw in a few pics of a guy in a wheelchair
F. We show a park and some kids playing

Sinc eht eentire WORLD loves barack so much (yea like chamberlain right before wwII).

That they have to give it to chicago
so give it to us now.. we dont want to do any real work..

Then they lost and lost BIG..

And now these IDIOTS are going to play the race card
and politic card saying

Oh because we were black and liberal thats why you didnt choose us..

What a bunch of fools
What a bunch of Creeps
What a bunch of IDIOTS
What a bunch of MORONS

But mostly what a bunch of arrogant liberal pussies.
The crying and race baiting will begin in

5…..
4….
3…
2..

Is there a link about this somewhere? I tried searching for an Al Gore quote about this but all I got was some staffer of his saying something (text below).

“If they don’t come back with the gold, clearly there will be the same questions that American basketball would get if they don’t come back with the gold — they are expected to win.”

We lost because Congress failed to…

… quickly pass and enact an economy-crippling health care insurance reform bill

… pass and enact (another economy-crippling) cap-and-tax climate change bill

… pass and enact legislation extending to any and all takers free college tuition

… pass… oh, fill in a favored excuse yourself!

Axelrod…is a major problem. Thankfully there won’t be $ going to the Chicago cronies via the Olympics.

Wow, very revealing. Axelrod’s and the Obamacrats attitude to politics on display; politics is a dirty game, you have to play hard and dirty because everybody’s doing it. The current crew in the White House is deeply cynical, pure evil.

What do Oprah, Michelle O and Barack have in common? Reverend Wrights racist, marxist, black liberation theology church. Orca was smart enough to get out when she started syndication.

marklmail on October 2, 2009 at 4:01 PM

But, but ,but the gold medal was a shoe in! Who elected this loser can’t even win the bronze with his so called political skills. mr. Obama, you are losing your supporters in the United States, and every where else around the world. You should probably go back to Chicago (or better yet, Kenya) and let a real man or woman fill in for ya.

toongoon on October 2, 2009 at 4:10 PM

Actually, we lost the Olympics because someone slipped glossy photos of Axelrod under the doors of each judges hotel room.

Seeing that face first thing in the morning was the tipping point.

Incompetent is not nefarious? Finally an honest answer from the White House!

Hey! Maybe he can get the Special Olympics to Chicago!

He can lead the Bowling team!

Or Not.

Apparently, the IOC can add; 0 (President O), plus 0 (Mrs. O) plus 0 (Oprah) equals zero. Guess the IOC didn’t get the memo that Barack Obama has a gift.

Why did the White House put the prestige of the American presidency on the line for the 2016 Olympiads in the first place?

Hey, Dumbo…the IOC as corrupt as they are had no intention of putting the golden rings in your crappy city.

LMAO.

Of course there is politics in the decision — there is also national interests and, and, even gambling going on at ricks!

Of course these same things apply to every international dealing — including those with Russia, the Czechs, and Iran.

These people did just wake up January 20th didn’t they!

Axelrod, a used car salesman, who failed to consult with his manager. In the case of the Olympics, it was not politics it was the people. The public finally made their voices heard – they did not want the Olympics.

The result, the egos and the profit of many in the administration were shattered because the people were able to speak up and overcome the administrations dictates, leaving them looking at empty houses, pockets, and arid land.

MSGTAS on October 3, 2009 at 10:54 AM

Two things.

Can’t help but notice the complete non-consideration of any objective criteria by Axelrod and folks like him, in trying to understand why they lost the Olympics; for them it’s always straight to politics, and never anything but politics.

Also: Can’t help but notice the complete lack of presentation by the press of any objective differences between the Olympic bids, or the cities themselves. Seems they can’t be bothered to even look at any differences, or report on them.

(Disclaimer: Maybe I just haven’t tuned into the right media sources.)

Hey! Maybe he can get the Special Olympics to Chicago!

He can lead the Bowling team!

DSchoen on October 2, 2009 at 4:35 PM

Heh.

RD on October 3, 2009 at 2:13 PM

I’m shocked! Shocked to learn there are politics involved in the selection of a host city for the Olympics! How dumb, naive, and politically deaf could Alexrod have been? Of course there are politic involved. The fact they apparently did not know that going in is testimony to how utterly incompetent Barry is.

Fed45 on October 4, 2009 at 3:57 AM

If they had even done 5 minutes of research on the google they would have learned how many hurdles that US has to overcome just to be “tolerated” by the IOC…let along liked. There is currently a long standing financial dispute doing on between the USOC and the IOC. That factored in prominently. Couple that with fact that Rio just blew them out of the water with their presentation. It focused on how they would pull it off (without raising taxes–ultimate positive PR for the IOC and the Olympics), and how it would ultimately be to the benefit of the IOC to pick them. Only continent other than Antartica that had yet to host an Olympics. One of the Top 10 economies in the world that had yet to host and Olympics.

Barry just talked about how it would benefit him, Michelle, Chicago, and the US (in that order)
