Video: Obama economic advisor goofs on “wingnut” Sarah Palin

posted at 9:08 pm on October 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

From last night’s “D.C.’s Funniest Celebrity” contest, it’s Austan Goolsbee in the second-funniest performance he’s ever given. Skip the first 1:50, which is all intro, and settle in for a 10-minute reprise of Kevin Nealon’s “Subliminal Man” bit from SNL. Highlights: A goof on Birtherism at around 2:40, some self-mockery about Marx and Trotsky at 3:30, and finally a minute’s worth of material on Republican governors at 8:30. I’m sure he doesn’t really think Palin will be arrested before 2012. Or does he?

I prefer his stand-up schtick when he’s trying to explain obama’s economic agenda.

My question….could this White House be any LESS PROFESSIONAL. Do your effing job, you pantywaist. There’s plenty enough to keep you busy there.

HornetSting on October 1, 2009 at 9:15 PM

How lame. This guy, in his own mind, thinks he’s hilarious. Kevin Nealon is embarrassed.
I wonder what Dennis Miller must think of Goolsbee.
What the hell kind of last name is Goolsbee?

Why do we care what a comedian or other dumbass says about a politician? I’m 46 and it’s been going on since I first started watching T-V.Is this just a thread to bring about traffic? Maybe bring in trolls to argue with. What?

FlyoverJ-HawkFan on October 1, 2009 at 9:17 PM

OK, I have a new blog post up… and it addresses this issue perfectly.

The end justifies the means; this is the liberal left in America’s new ideology. Do what ever it takes to win and correct any social injustices afterwards. With this as their guiding ideological and philosophical mantra America’s liberal left has launched a new assault on American politics.

Within this frame work lays the Politics of personal destruction, enter Sarah Palin. A wife, a mother, a Christian and the Former Governor of the State of Alaska and the most public example of the politics of personal destruction ever seen on the stage of American politics.

There was no insult, slur or denigrating comment so vile or reprehensible that the win at any cost, ends justify the means crowd were not gleeful to throw at her. She represented a threat to their agenda that had to be neutralized at any cost. Any cost included truthfulness, decency morality and ethics. Every single one sacrificed at the alter of winning.

Goolesby is a textbook example of the term “SIMPLETON”.
His mother should be ashamed for beinging such an idiot into the world for the rest of civilized society to contend with.

bannedbyhuffpo on October 1, 2009 at 9:23 PM

Goolsbee’s routine played off of Kevin Nealon’s classic Saturday Night Live routine, in which Nealon would say something and then, under his breath, say what he was truly thinking.

The White House economic adviser won by suggesting Republicans “might do better looking outside of Washington to governors, there’s a lot of governors. There’s obviously Sarah Palin (wingnut) from Alaska who’s a former governor (quitter) and you cannot rule out that by 2012 (there will be a warrant for her arrest) that she’ll be the nominee.”

also

Goolsbee competed against several other prominent D.C. professionals for the title of funniest celebrity, including Senator Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and ABC News’ own Sam Donaldson.

Anybody actually doing their jobs in DC, or is everybody paying graba$$?

Mark McNally on October 1, 2009 at 9:45 PM

as an undergraduate [Goolsbee] performed in the student improv troupe…

Well, that explains the unfunny.

Terry_Dyne on October 1, 2009 at 9:45 PM

They may not go as far as arresting folks willy-nilly, but I will be surprised if there isn’t a serious push to try to stifle talk radio, blogs like this, and Fox News.

They will get an outcome that they will not like.

As for Sarah, they will continue to attempt to ridicule and marginalize her, to no effect.

hillbillyjim on October 1, 2009 at 9:46 PM

The 11 contestants who gathered at the Improv didn’t spare anyone and took jabs at leaders on both sides of the political aisle. But the favorite subject of the night was, undoubtedly, Sarah Palin.

“I promised to speak 10 minutes tonight but, in honor of Sarah Palin, I’m going to do half of that and quit,” Democratic California Rep. Jackie Speier said as she opened her monologue, referring to Palin’s stepping down as Alaska governor this year.

Master of ceremonies Baratunde Thurston even had suggestions for a title for the former GOP vice presidential candidate’s forthcoming book.

“If at first you don’t succeed, say you did and then quit,” the comedian said. Or, “Turning 15 minutes of fame into forever.”

Other officials were not spared either.

“My rule is never drink water. Dick Cheney tortures with it,” joked Grover Norquist, president of the conservative advocacy group Americans for Tax Reform.

Terry_Dyne on October 1, 2009 at 9:48 PM

Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash., who won bronze, took a jab at the country’s leaders. Speaking of Abdullah Abdullah, a candidate in Afghanistan’s disputed presidential elections, Larsen joked, “The guy is so good, they named him twice.”

As for what’s the difference between elections in Florida and those in Afghanistan?

“After you vote in Florida, they hang chads. After you vote in Iran, they hang everybody,” Larson joked.

Like many other political happenings in Washington, the event also came with its fair share of controversy.

The contest is billed as a fundraiser for charities and nonprofit organizations, and has also been held in San Francisco and Baltimore. But, the Washington Post reported this week, organizers have failed to make any contributions to charities that have been promised the money in the past five years. Most of the money raised was used for putting together the show, according to the report.

What a miserable Godless cretin he really is. Millions of us rushed out to pre order the book because we are interested in the lowest common denominator (gossip)and not her incredible story and accomplishment of maintaining incredible composure and professionalism when she was enduring the most vicious and vulgar assaults ever seen against a politician in our lives because she walks her talk and lives her faith??? This says he thinks very little of us.
To get his jollies off by antagonizing his own site members who support Palin is immature and reflects very badly on him. I will ignore his Palin posts just like I do his stupid Meaghan McCain posts…

Yes, it’s going from sublime to ridiculuous. Palin is the perfect example for some who think that since she is considered one of us, that is the perfect opportunity for US to be mocked. Prove to me AP or anyone else, that she isn’t smarter than Hillary or any other female politician in this country. Or for that matter any so-called pseudo-intellectuals in the media. Fark the east coast degrees. With the exception of MIT, I haven’t seen ANY evidence that having an IVY League degree makes you smarter than anyone else. I don’t have an opinion yet whether she is the answer simply because she hasn’t played her cards yet. But, she is in a position for us in the middle of the country to take her seriously. landlines on October 2, 2009 at 2:32 AM

Didn’t watch the clip, but I just wanted to remind folks who this jackass is.

Remember when Obama was still in his duel-to-the-death with Hillary Clinton in February 2008 and he played to rust belt audiences in Ohio by bashing NAFTA? To reassure the Canadian government that he didn’t mean it the way it sounded, Goolsbee — then an economic advisor to the BHO campaign from the University of Chicago — went to the Canadian consulate to allay any fears.

From Slate.com, March 4, 2008 (a pic of the actual memo included):

For the Canadians, a key point of concern was Obama’s sharp criticism of the North American Free Trade Agreement. [Joseph DeMora, a consulate staff member] wrote [Canadian Ambassador Michael] Wilson that in the Chicago meeting, Goolsbee “candidly acknowledged the protectionist sentiment that has emerged, particularly in the Midwest, during the primary campaign” but reassured [Georges Rioux, consul general for the Canadian government] that Obama’s NAFTA-bashing “should be viewed as more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans.”

L.N. Smithee on October 2, 2009 at 3:23 AM

Here we go again! Outraged Palinistas (who aren’t hyper-sensitive in the least and thinks Sarah’s as tough as Patton) are having a conniption fit because AP posted this video (which apparently proves AP must really, really hate Sarah).

There’s obviously Sarah Palin (wingnut) from Alaska who’s a former governor (quitter) and you cannot rule out that by 2012 (there will be a warrant for her arrest) that she’ll be the nominee.”

Whaaatt??? Isn’t one of the first rules of comedy that if you have to explain a joke it’s not funny?

Or maybe he’s hinting that if Obama’s vision for America continues on track, conservatives will be arrested as a matter of course for thought crimes against the state.

Buy Danish on October 2, 2009 at 7:48 AM

I made it to the 3:30 mark and couldn’t watch anymore. The guy’s a moron, which doesn’t surprise me since he works for 0bama.

Torch on October 2, 2009 at 9:03 AM

Okay, here with a contrarian viewpoint. I was okay with most of it, since IMHO many of his ‘subliminal’ references poked fun at the left-wing Dems’ own hyper-partisanship. The inflections gave it away most of all.

However: There were a few notable exceptions, that didn’t have any ironic component AFAICT and sounded like he meant them as crude slurs. One was “FOX News correspondent”, and the other two were “wingnut” and “there will be a warrant for her arrest” (Sarah Palin). “Ungrateful bastards” (GM) was also in this camp and the snoring sound (Jindal, Romney) was right on the line.

By comparison, the early crack about “if the parole board says it’s okay” (Blagojevich) and even “quitter!” (Palin) were delivered differently and sounded more self-implicating than derisive to me.

RD on October 2, 2009 at 10:29 AM
