Next Right: Conservatives need more sites like Big Government — and Hot Air
posted at 9:51 pm on October 1, 2009 by Allahpundit
I love the smell of shameless pretexts for self-promotion in the morning.
The institutional Right has realized there’s a new battlefield and they have finally moved into it. But I’m reminded a bit of the British troops versus the Colonists in the American Revolution (the analogy is tactical, not political). The Left built new institutions and adapted their tactics to the new battlefield – guerilla warfare, as it were – while the Right is trying to port over the institutional cultures and tactics that they have built up over generations, regardless of the new battlefield.
Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government and Michelle Malkin’s Hot Air are excellent examples of good, innovative projects on the Right. We need more guerilla media, like Breitbart is doing. And Malkin had the right idea with Hot Air – take successful, iconoclastic bloggers (Ed Morrissey and AllahPundit), give them free rein (rather than pandering and red meat) and build around them.
The continuing cultural divide between the Left and Right approach to online media is best illustrated by this: While organizations on the Right tend to hire a single blogger (generally from internal or junior political staff, rather than the blogosphere), organizations on the Left very often (a) hire successful bloggers and give them freedom, and/or (b) have very large staffs focused on muckraking, research and blogging. Huffington Post has something close to 50. Talking Points Memo has a staff of close to 20…and they’re expanding. Think Progress has something like 14-17 people working on their 3 blogs and daily email. Media Matters has a staff of many dozens, most aimed directly at the web.
The Right cannot invest in simply pushing an institutional message; the Right has to invest in adding value.
Well, Newsbusters certainly fits the second model. I think of it as the right’s answer to Media Matters, frankly, even though it’s vastly less willing to, say, concoct revisionist histories or bowdlerize video clips or just plain lie to its readers to advance its agenda. As for our own little bird’s nest here, I suspect we do well mainly because of the sheer volume of content we provide between the Blog posts and Headlines, not because we’re particularly iconoclastic (which, 95 percent of the time, we’re not). I’ve personally always thought of the site less as a blog and more as a news aggregator, where news junkies can go to get their fix during the day; that’s how most big-traffic political sites tend to work, from Instapundit all the way on up to Drudge. But I am grateful to Henke for noticing that my beloved boss gives Ed and I a lot of leeway in what we post, even if it involves challenging people whom she’s friends with and a fan of. It’s an exceedingly rare person who has that much integrity and is that generous towards her employees. She doesn’t get enough credit for it, so it’s gratifying to see her get a little here. Exit question: Who’s ready to step up and start the next guerrilla media site in the Breitbart mold? Or has ACORN’s lawsuit now made that prohibitively expensive?

Since this seems like confessional…I have been a fan of MM for many years and was reading her blog regularly when she came up with the idea of HA. I was here the day it opened and have missed but a few days(real life gets in the way) since the beginning. I have gotten pissed off at AP sometimes, but I have always come back for more. I read Ed’s blog long before he came over to HA. He compliments AP well. Thanks for you hard work and continued success.

In Norse mythology, Loki [aka, Allahpundit] is known as a trickster. He is described in the Prose Edda as a “contriver of fraud”. Although he doesn’t appear often in the Eddas, he is generally described as a member of the family of Odin [aka, Michelle Malkin's clan]. Despite his divine or demi-god status, there’s little evidence to show that Loki [aka, Allahpundit] had a following of worshippers of his own [not even Meagan McCain to his utter dismay]; in other words, his job was mostly to make trouble for other gods, men, and the rest of the world.
Loki [aka, Allahpundit] is known for bringing about chaos and discord, but by challenging the gods, he also brings about change. Without Loki’s [aka, Allahpundit] influence, the gods may become complacent, so Loki [aka, Allahpundit] does actually serve a worthwhile purpose.

Simplicity can mean a lot, sometimes.
I check out a gazillion sites every week. I post on maybe 2-3 others. Sometimes more but not often. HotAir is way above them all for content and ease of use. Drudge used to be number one for me, but although I check headlines there, I come here to view the story. Commenter’s can add a lot too. HotAir is sort of like a family coming together to discuss breaking news (as well as Dudes and Hmmmm’s). That adds something you can’t get on site like Drudge. When I read Drudge,, it’s just me. But when I read news on HotAir, I’m reading what the “family” (for lack of a better word) is thinking and adding too.

1. I like the website design. I can’t stand sites where there is too much going on everywhere. That’s just my preference though and I wouldn’t be opposed to changes here and there.
2. I like both Ed and Allah. Even as one of those crazy Evangelicals I like that Allah gets me to think about the other side of things. I would get bored in an echochamber.
3. I like the commenters. So witty and intelligent. I am not worthy, but they let me comment anyway.
4. Kudos MM (although I am sad that we now have to clarify between Michelle and Meghan.

Doctor Zero stands accused of repeatedly using the unholy combination of meticulous logic and reasoned articulation to try to convince the uppity unwashed peasants that they have the right and ability to stand up to their royalist betters. This is completely unacceptable as with malice of forethought it is molesting, tormenting, and otherwise greatly annoying our beloved Dear Leader and all his Royalist Forces and loyal subjects. Now, Doctor Zero, His Royal Majesty, Obama the Magnificent, ruler of all that he surveys, has instructed me to again give you fair warning, either you or your head must be off, and that in about half no time! Take your choice! Oh, and, Doctor Zero, please take that no account Hillbilly with you.

Yes conservatives need to match the Left on all media fronts. We’ve finally seen success as Gateway Pundit helped take down Van Jones, and now ACORN has been exposed. At my blog, Blue Collar Philosophy, I try and provide theological and philosophical depth to Conservative principles. A proper theology and philosophy can powerfully reinforce one’s argument against the Left. Many of those who support President Obama suscribe to a false Liberal Theology and we’ve seen what that produces in a church with a pastor like Jeremiah Wright. One thing more secular conservatives cannot do is alienate the “Religious Right” for in doing so undermines the foundation of conservative ideas.

Thank you Ms. malkin, Ed, Allapundit, and commenters for allowing me to educate myself.

Thanks to MM and the HA staff for your work (and letting me comment once in a while). I never fail to laugh out loud at some of the comments here. Great to finally have a place to indulge in some liberal schadenfreude, I just can’t help myself.

Speaking of Malkin: She carefully researches the facts and issues both on her site and in her book. That gives her a lot of credibility. She is not the only one out there doing this I know, but I give great credit to those who can back up what they say….many could not if pressed.

I am not even sure what iconoclast means, but the take you and Ed bring are a big part of the reason this is my first stop every day (and several times a day), and the reason why Ace is my second. Sites like Red State just bore the heck out of me – they’re not doing anything wrong per se, it’s just not that interesting to read RNC press releases.

That’s merely an inconvenience until the silly MM’s 15 minutes are up.

We desperately need investigative journalism. Sadly Fox News does not provide any.
faraway on October 1, 2009 at 11:41 PM
I’ve noticed many of HotAir’s daily headlines showing up as topics of discussion on the cable networks later that same day. And quite often these topics are given birth here at HotAir and not cherry-picked from the usual news sources.
The Fox gang in particular, Hannity, O’Reilly, Greta and even Gutfeld over at Red-Eye obviously take a peek at the stories here every day.
If by peek, you mean steal. *snicker*
Congrats Ed and Allah, leaders not followers. The whole world is watching.

What is with all the talk about the right being “new” to the battlefield? I remember during the 2000 election, while in college and first got into politics, that the internet and various opinion sites tilted heavily in favor of conservatives. Sites like Salon.com were struggling to find readers and then the word “blog” became mainstream thanks to Rathergate in 2004; these were right wing blogs which broke that story and brought a network to it’s knees.
The left, with the Huffington Post, Daily Kos, moveon.org and Media Matters took awhile to get fully established. The only advantage the left has over the right is organization. The right has always been fragmented into many different blogs while the left concentrates on a handful of mega sites to get their talking points and hit jobs across. As long as we cut out nuts like Charles Johnson who do nothing but attack their allies, then conservative blogs can easily get the upper hand. Focus on Obama, not one another.

Here is why I read Hotair first: Ed, AP, and Michelle do the research first. I have yet to see a post here that does not back it up with links to the truth. (Other than AP’s posts of ‘To good to check’!)
After being raised in a Dem household, and seeing how the left has become disengaged with the truth, it seriously makes me humble that there is some truth being reported out here.
I thank you all for your valour and respect your vigilance for the truth.

The one real criticism I have with HA is the anti-Christian threads started by Allahpundit. They are intolerant and designed solely for Christian bashing. Never a Jew-bashing issue. Never a Muslim-bashing topic. Always going out after Christianity. During the 2008 primaries, Allah was actually fomenting anti-Christian hatred by egging on Huck supporters to bash Mitt’s faith. And, conversely, getting Mitt supporters to attack Huckabee. I’d rather Allah keep his own hatred of Christians to himself and not make it fodder on HA.
It is an intolerance that takes away from the overall value of HA.
highhopes on October 1, 2009 at 11:47 PM
Kos and moveon always overreach. They are a cancer on the Democratic Party. They are self-destructive.

My only real gripe with Allah and HA this PM is that he is using that awful, snide, winking pix of Sarah again. AP: didn’t we formerly beg you to please use another picture? Not only should you not use it, you should destroy it, however that’s done.

Yes, and it’s done quite matter-of-factly, quietly and effectively. I do admire that ability.
jeanie on October 2, 2009 at 12:03 AM
Here’s the problem of conservative blogs as I see it:
1) We feel the need to label them “conservative.” The big liberal blogs don’t do this. (See the “About” section on Daily Kos. They only say the word liberal 3 times and it’s never used to describe the site.) If we label our new site “conservative” it’s easily discredited by the liberal press. (Drudge doesn’t label his site as conservative and he SHAPES the news of the day. Trust me. Listen to the radio. They’re basically reading Drudge to you.)
2)We need a blog that masquerades as a legitimate news source. If you didn’t know better (and a lot of people on the internet don’t) you might think HuffPo was an actual news site rather than a liberal propaganda blog. We need to answer this.
3) We need more big-name conservative bloggers. No offense to Ed, Allah, and Michelle (I love each of you dearly), but when HuffPo and Kos have articles by big liberals like Olbermann or insiders like Pelosi and Reid, it makes our bloggers look like the stereotypical basement dwellers by comparisson. Why not a regular post by DeMint? Why not a regular post by Beck (or even Stu), or Hannity?
4) WARNING: This is only a maybe! We need to utlize the seek-and-destroy tactics that the left use. They shut down the opposition why we try to reason with them. I don’t think it works. When’s the last time you heard anything out of Joe the Plumber (did you know he’s not a licensed plumber and owes back taxes?!!?!) But the likes of Rick “I paralyzed a dude with my car while driving drunk” Sanchez gets a show on CNN? It might not hurt for us to pull up people’s previous caffeine-pill use or back taxes and pummel them with it. And dare I say it? People who thrust themselves into the public debate might ought to be included.
5) Produce even more content. Allah mentioned content as a dominate traffic-driving source. I would say that HuffPo has the same model, but it’s in overdrive. The Green Room is a good start to this, but the more quality content a site can produce, the better.
None of this is meant to be a critique of Hot Air or MM, only an overview of the landscape as I see it. If a new site were created, I think these concepts should be taken into consideration.
“But don’t YOU have a site, Advocate?” Why yes I do, but it is my first foray into the blogging adventure. I think I’m getting better at it (some of my early posts were God-awful), but we need someone who is extremely talented to lead this charge.
Allah? Allah?

Sometimes this is very difficult for intellectuals to do, especially when they live in isolation from “average people.” And some things are very difficult to in simple language. So, this is another reason why it’s important to keep the lines of communication open and in frequent use between intellectuals and the grassroots of the conservative movement. Thanks again, Mr. Beck.

AP, before you go tooting your own horn sand getting all proud of the mention……ask yourself this:
How many stories has Hot Air ever broke or exposed? Zero. That’s how many.
That’s how many you will continue to break because you have no spine, no original thought, and you don’t have an investigative bone in your body.
You rehash news other people make or discover. You are nothing compared to Big Government, Glenn Beck, Gateway Pundit or any other blogger or commentator that actually has the capacity for original thought.
Hot Air is even too afraid to post the truth on Joe Biden’s coke fiend daughter or the usurpers ineligibility.
We need fewer sites like Hot Air and more sites that are willing to ask the tough questions and get a little dirty doing it.
Mr Purple on October 2, 2009 at 12:19 AM

This site was started by MM and featured original video of her investigative reporting. When her writing and speaking career really took off, she turned over the reigns to Ed and Allahpundit. Hot Air may not be the first on a story, but I notice they are very good at getting all the facts and presenting them in a clear manner (although Allah tends to the snarky side). And they are dogged about getting to the truth of things–making sure that they publish updates and get all the facts straight, so when the day is done they are not left with any egg on their faces with botched reporting.
I followed Michelle’s career as a columnist for the Seattle papers, and was tickled when she started this site. I love those early videos and miss seeing her in them. As for where I get my online news, I start with Hot Air, move on to either Michelle’s site or Pajamas Media, then to Instapundit, Big Hollywood, Big Government, Gateway Pundit, Rush Limbaugh’s online site and finish up with Conservatives 4 Palin. Each site has its own perspective and I feel like I get a good overview of what’s going on in the world by visiting each one. There are a number of other bloggers I visit on a fairly regular basis (American Digest, The Anchoress and Motivation: Truth come to mind) and of course as a Sarah Palin booster I’m a member at Team Sarah.
I’m so thankful and grateful for all the bloggers and the work they do keeping us informed and inspired with their tireless work. If not for you all, the U.S.A. would have become the United Socialist States of America months ago. Because of you and people like Rush, Glenn, Sean, Mark Levin and other talkers, I feel like we have a chance to turn the tide.
Thank you, Michelle, Ed and Allah. God bless you all (especially Allah).
theotherone on October 2, 2009 at 12:34 AM
I couldn’t agree more. There is NOTHING worse than a crowded, busy blog design that is full of graphics and backgrounds and gadgets and gimmicks and embedded crap and JavaScript that takes an age to load and won’t scroll smoothly. I usually view such annoying pages once and never go back to them.
Hot Air on the other hand has a simple, neat, minimal design which renders immediately and scrolls smoothly. Because of this, it’s a pleasure to view and post on a mobile device such as a Blackberry.
Usability and functionality are very important concepts in web design, unfortunately far too many designers neglect them in favor of visual content and gimmicks. They’re laying the page out like it’s a magazine and it’s not.
Please, don’t change Hot Air. I hate it when a site that works is revamped into some kind of slow, jerky monstrosity for the sake of looking a little more modern. The New York Post just ruined its site like this.

Linked to HA about 2 years ago through Michelle’s site on my first visit to a political blog. Been a junkie ever since.
Didn’t know who AP or Ed were, and didn’t read anything they wrote. Just wanted to watch the vids, follow links, and read the comments. Never seen anything like it. Geez, political debates, philosophical discourses, history lessons, the atheism vs belief in God battle, sh!t talking, name calling, and wise-cracking—my favorite feature. World class jokers! Next best thing to stand-up. Ain’t much better in life than laughing.

I’ve personally always thought of the site less as a blog and more as a news aggregator, where news junkies can go to get their fix during the day; that’s how most big-traffic political sites tend to work, from Instapundit all the way on up to Drudge.
It serves that function well, but it doesn’t hurt that you’re the most clever writer on the Internet.

I don’t even go to Drudge or FNC anymore. Hot Air has it all…. maybe too much given the political climate we must weather. I often leave feeling somewhat exasperated and more than somewhat concerned for the well being of our great nation but it’s better that way. You all know that Michelle Malkin is the ultimate architect behind HotAir.com, but I 100% agree with the other longtime fans that Bryan Preston deserves credit as a driving creative force in this site’s formative first year. Few people know exactly how much work Bryan put into the overall presentation of HotAir.com during that period.
Ed stands on the giant’s shoulders and makes HotAir.com that much taller, but c’mon… a fight between “TEMS” and “Vent” is short, brutal, and completely one sided.

Thank you MM, Ed and AP. I live in a very liberal area. Hot Air has become my link to a better world. I appreciate Ed and AP’s hard work. The Green room is a great addition. The myriad individual voices of commenters is what keeps me reading. All in all, very high signal to noise.

I consider HA to be my default go-to for many of the reasons already listed, the staff doeas a great job and I find it (the content) pretty well rounded. But my most cherished aspect of HA is right here in this box, the ability to interact with other folks…priceless. Thanks to MM,Ed, and Allah for making HA a daily must-have.

Keep up the great work!

The only complaint I have about HotAir is that we don’t know what Allahpundit looks like!
;)

Hot Air is but a foul temptress. A continuation of an addiction I had earlier in my life. It was during the Clinton War. Back then, liberals lost big in 1994. But the Republicans over-reached and slowly let the power slip away. You could see it happening, just like the Democrats are doing now. I was addicted to AOL From The Right chat rooms. My name, BILLisSCUM, in honor of our then President. Together with my brother, TedDrunk, in honor of guess who, we’d spend hours in battle, day after day, with the roving liberals, and occasionally venture into From The Left to do battle. It was as tough an addiction as any drug to break. Back then we had to start our own topics to comment on. Sometimes several topics going on in the room.
But here you don’t get the views of some knucklehead in Kansas (nothing wrong with Kansas, just picking a state) to start a topic. You get famous people on a very famous site to get you going, on up to the minute news topics. You get a much higher level of comments from members too.
To my wife who once again, says I’m spending too much time with my “friends”, I say sorry honey, this foul temptress of a site is way too intoxicating a habit to break.

HA’s my main news and commentary portal. After HA, I check Drudge, Breitbart’s sites, Memeorandum and Real Clear Politics.
I’d like to see MM develop a larger investigative capability. How do we raise money for that? She and Breitbart could work wonders together.

I have zero idea what the Right’s “institutional message” would even be.
All the blogs I read seem hostile to the institutional Right. Which major blog is out there pushing the party line? (For that matter, which party’s line? Feckless, backstabbing Republicans?! LOL)

It depends on the success/failure of that suit. That’s in a holding pattern right now, even in states that are not as accomodating to ACORN’s counterattack.

I’m a former Liberal…
Here’s how it went for me:
1. Discover Andrew Wilkow by accident on Sirius
2. Start occasionally listening to Patriot channel on Sirius
3. Discover Mark Levin. Become interested in what conservatism actually is, as opposed to what I thought it was
4. Mark Levin leads me to Michelle Malkin, Drudge, American Thinker, etc. etc.
5. Michelle Malkin leads me to Hot Air
Hot Air rocks! Keep up the great work.

Here you go. Just one of many typical pictures of AP.

Ed and Allah, you all rock! I disagree with the assessment that HA is just an outlet for news. It’s the commentary that you all add that makes this such a great site. You provide the conservative slant on the news, often times giving it a spectacularly humorous tint. This is the MAGIC of HotAir. In addition, another great thing about HA is that you all inject reality and balance into your commentary to keep us right wingers well-grounded, and yet, at the same time, we can see in your comments the affirmation of our values. This is called street cred. You all have it in abundance. Kudos.

Where are the conservative super-fat cats like Soros? We need some gigantic benefactors to fund sites.

Doesn’t one come on the radio every day from 12-3? Pony up, Rush and we could do wonders for the movement.
Advocate For Change on October 2, 2009 at 8:20 AM
The problem is the “Right” politicians don’t read these sites like the “Left” does.
Some of the funniest things on Rush, Hannnity etc is when they play 25 politicians and news reports all using the EXACT SAME WORDING in a 24 hour news cycle.
We need the politicians or their staff to READ these websites.
And we need “Right” leaning people to organize and buy a troubled newspaper or broadcasting company. Then manage if fairly. Imagine what the sales of USA Today would be if a coalition of the right bought USA Today. I would buy a FAIR newspaper. I would even pay for an online subscription.

But less pseudo-conservatives like Allahpundit…

go ahead and participate in this little mutual admiration society. And I do mean “little”. 100% bashing of the left 100% of the time. No attempt to whip the dysfuntional GOP in shape, however. And here comes 2010 at us and the Republican party is no different than it was on 11/6/07 and 11/4/08. I finally go so bored w/the NextRight I quit visiting. DD

I discovered this site during the long, long 2008 election. I’m pretty liberal (so sometimes, when I’m reading items and there’s a strong conservative bent, I have to remember where I am!) — and I love this site. It’s one of the places I check throughout the day.
It presents items fairly and without the reflexive, kneejerk liberalism of HuffingtonPost. And it’s not kneejerk the other way, either. It is a very valuable roundup of what’s going on, politically speaking, in the country.
Good job — kudos.
Oh — and though I’m liberal, I cannot STAND Barack Obama. What an inexperienced, preening nitwit. I wrote in Hillary…

I think Powerline has potential to become more influential but they seem unwilling to go past the basic ‘top-down’ style of a blog site. Maybe that’s because they’re too busy with their real jobs. But layout and appearance are important.
All I can say is, thank god for Hot Air. I love Allah’s sense of humor and agree with just about everything he writes. The right needs more voices like his. Because there are plenty of Republicans who don’t care so much about god or abortion but take our individual freedoms very seriously.

Good feelings come by kinda rubbing elbows and almost talking with good folks like you. Thanks.

If you are a democrat then you are probably a “Classic” democrat and not a true liberal.
Tammy Bruce was in your shoes, she really is what I would call a “Classic” Democrat, rather then the new liberal democrat….it is more aligned with the existing Republican party.
She has found more reasons to move from the democrats…she is still an ardent feminist, still pro-abortion (not supportive of it, but not making illegal), cares about human suffering, cares about education…she thinks the conservatives will accept her “liberal” stand, and she will embrace all the other good things that we have to offer.
If you look, we are more of a “JFK” style democrat then the old hard core conservative John Birch stuff.
Glad you read us…but don’t tell your friends….
right2bright on October 2, 2009 at 9:19 AM
I can relate. Living in NJ, my family are all Dems as well. But after talking with them, I never get the feeling that they are trying to be dishonest. It just that most of them are never really been exposed to the other side of the story. All of their ‘news’ comes from the old traditional sources (and the new traditional sources like Jon Stewart). They simply repeat what they’ve heard from the big media.
I guess what I’m saying is, you can’t blame a zombie for being a zombie. :)

Great little love fest we’re having here, except for maybe Mr.(sour grapes)Purple, I’ve been visiting HA since the beginning, it’s where I get me news fix for the day. I love AP’s wit and Ed’s intelligence. The commenters crack me up and tick me off, but always keep me coming back. I have turned friends on to the site, many are now HA heads themselves now.
MMM MMMM MM…Good times, good times.
