Letterman blackmailed into admitting sex with staffers; Update: Suspect identified?

posted at 10:23 pm on October 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

Weird. And awful.

According to a press release sent by Letterman’s PR reps, the host first received a package three weeks ago from someone who claimed to have information about alleged sexual relations he has had with female employees of the “Late Show.”…

“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life,” Letterman said on Thursday’s edition of CBS’ “Late Show.” “I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.”

As part of the testimony, Letterman admitted that he had engaged in sexual relationships with staff members.

“My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would,” Letterman said. “I feel like I need to protect these people — I need to certainly protect my family.”

Follow the link for a reminder that this isn’t the first extortion bid he’s been subject to. Yeah, he’s a leftist water-carrier and a sporadically nasty crank, but even so, my heart breaks for the guy for having his privacy violated so egregiously. Why acknowledge the extortion on the show, though? Even if the news broke in the papers, a studious silence would have led at least some people to believe that the accusations against him were bogus.

Update: Radar says it knows who the accused extortionist is.

Update: Verum Serum visits with the Ghost of Monologues Past.

while your sympathy for Letterman is noble, to him you’ll always just be that cowardly wingnut that works for the self-hating Asian babe with a Jew last name.”

Dude, I actually laughed out loud at the steakhouse (far western time zone here) when I read this comment. I mean, the thought that it’s perfectly okay to say that Letterman would always consider of Allahpundit as “a cowardly wingnut” but having Letterman call The Boss a “self-hating Asian babe with a Jew last name”? Ra-a-a-a-a-a-a-cist.

Hey, I know it was an honest mistake in misinterpreting the comment (to hilarious effect), so no big deal. Besides, I predict that in a far-flung post apocalyptic future, the last remaining human tribes will somehow find this thread and worship the writings of Jim Treacher.

He made a bunch of unflattering jokes about Republicans (including Mark Sanford), one flattering joke about Obama (he’s such a rare politician, he actually takes business trips “with his wife”! ba DUM bum), and then he told the story of what happened with him, admitted he had slept with women who worked there, and got lots of love, laughs, and applause from his adoring audience.

Just re-read Allah’s heartbreak over Letterman’s self-made predicament and I have to say it is truly disgusting.

Did you heart break over Sarah Palin’s family being trashed for no reason other than her daring to be conservative? I’d say her privacy was more egregiously violated, no?

Come on, people! He married his babymomma in March of this year, so any hanky-panky before that time is not adultery. (For you technocrats, it’s called fornication.) And everyone seems to be jumping on Dave before all the facts come out. How do you know that there was not a “Personal Service Clause” in the women’s Employment Contract with World Wide (dropped) Pants?

Surely Dave would have the contractual right to have sex with a subordinate because otherwise, he would be exposing CBS, his production company and his personal fortune to millions in damages for sexual harrassment. (See Wild Bill O’Reilly.)

Surely, Indeed.

(It’s really simple, Spathi)

BigAlSouth on October 2, 2009 at 6:15 AM

Wow, working for Dave must really suck, ha!, at least Palin never screwed the help. How about those teabaggers Dave? I’ve got a good idea for his next show: “Top 10 ways to get an excellent job review at CBS”. Oops, I forgot, he is a victim because someone tried to make him pay. Dave is just another Hollywood liberal elitist hypocrite scumbag who’s real life has more entertainment value than his TV show.

CarolynM on October 2, 2009 at 6:27 AM

Wasn’t Letterman’s wife one of his staff years ago?

yoda on October 2, 2009 at 6:29 AM

Two possible scenarios:

1) The extortionist came into knowledge of Letterman’s despicable behavior and tried to use it. Letterman, being a model of the community, felt it his civic duty to get a extortionist off the streets.

2) Letterman was going to have to admit his despicable behavior anyway, so he chose to take the extortionist down with him in order to mitigate some of the damage to his reputation. Now he is a hero for putting a serial extortionist behind bars.

Which situation fits better with Letterman’s personality?

csdeven on October 2, 2009 at 6:36 AM

Three Thoughts.

1) EEWWWWWWW.

2) If you live your life right this sort of thing will not happen.

3)Why staffers? That has a very nasty tinge to it.

Jeff from WI on October 2, 2009 at 6:58 AM

3)Why staffers? That has a very nasty tinge to it.

Elizabetty on October 2, 2009 at 6:43 AM

1) After promising one a promotion for some harmless sex with a despicable old man, it’s easier to insure continued sex with aforementioned despicable old man when this selfsame despicable old man has the power to hold ones job over their head. It was Letterman’s way of securing his access to the vag.

2) Or, he’s too lazy to go looking in the typical locations.

Conclusion) I vote #1. Letterman is the guy with a wad of cash who is STILL turned away from the exclusive night club because he would drastically lower the quality of dude that is required to keep the ladies on the premises.

cmsinaz on October 2, 2009 at 7:36 AM

So, let’s get this straight. Letterman, who makes a living making fun of the right’s “moral failings” such has Palin’s daughter having a child out of wedlock, is banging a staffer- no sorry, more than one staffer- while living with a woman in a supposedly committed relationship. All the while embracing this type of relationship has the new way of doing things for the “enlightened elite”.

Now as a former detective, I’m going to say unless this is buried by his media buddies, a good reporter will dig and find out ol’ David there has been sowing his seed all over the countryside. It’s never one woman, or two, with these guys. He owns up to the old affair, hoping no one will ask about the recent affairs, it’s called “hedging.”

They’ll bury it, respecting his desire to “protect the privacy of his family” unlike what he does every night.

I haven’t watched Letterman since I realized he was an idiot.

Coming to this late, but my heart does not break. He did have a great show early on, but it has gotten tired. Be that as it may, but I have no sympathy for him based upon his “joke” about Sarah Palin’s daughter(s).

rbj on October 2, 2009 at 7:51 AM

Fox News just played the Letterman clip. Did I hear correctly that he made a joke out of his adultery? Did he really joke that, if the details of his behavior become known, it would improve the reputations of the women involved? If I heard that correctly, any chance that I would have sympathy for him is gone.

And Mr. Letterman, the time to think about protecting your family is before you betray their trust.

KyMouse on October 2, 2009 at 7:52 AM

Letterman is a sexual predator and should be fired immediately and then CBS and he should be sued immediately. Letterman is just too loathesome. What he did was illegal and if CBS knew about any of it they are liable too. Also, the idiot doing the extortion could have made more than $2MM if he actually did write a screenplay based on this.

For years, Letterman has given me the same slimey creep vibe that John Edwards always gave me. Old men that make “innocent” jokes about young girls have a screw loose, and I wouldn’t be surprised in kiddy porn turns up somewhere in his past.

It sounded like AP has a long held affection for Letterman, a lot of people grew up with his show, and back in “the day” he was actuallu kind of funny. Now he’s just a dirtbag who got caught.

Wonder what Sarah Palin thinks about it…

Seriously. Normal people don’t spend time with people who despise them. They don’t repeatedly throw bombs just to draw attention to themselves. And yet here you are, day after day, hour after hour doing just that.

What the hell is wrong with you?? Does this stuff you do over and over again excite you? Make you feel powerful? Smart? Superior?

Do you brag to your friends how wise and witty you are and how you riled up those jerks at HotAir? Do you even have any friends? Are they beginning to avoid you? KyMouse on October 2, 2009 at 7:52 AM

It sure seemed that way. Creepy wasn’t it? However, I think the mindless, sycophantic worshipers that make up his audience everyday would laugh if he’d announced his family had just been killed in a plane crash. They’d laugh because that’s what you’re suppose to do whenever Dave speaks. Ha ha. He he. What a funny guy.

Rod on October 2, 2009 at 8:48 AM

You know what will be funny, if it turns out Lettermen is just trying to find a fall guy for being “outed”.
He was probably approached and told he was going to be outed, he told his attorneys and they set a “trap” to try to get a case where Dave becomes the victim, instead of the perpetrator.
Probably not, but it would be a great story…accused of entrapment.

right2bright on October 2, 2009 at 8:48 AM

No sympathy here — he made bed, he can lie in it, though probably not with his wife for the next few weeks.

No outrage though, either. An entertainer sleeping around? A dorky nerd who never got any for the first ten years after puberty being a little kid-in-a-candy-shop-ish? Definitely a dog bites man story.

And, as for sleeping with the help, virtually every job I’ve ever held was the site of some intermural hanky-panky. Dang those women for entering the workforce and looking hot! And the higher the pressure, the more there is. Unless there are reports that he was offering unwanted advances or was rewarding or punishing staffers based on the sex, consulting adults are allowed to do their thing.

I have schadenfreude, not sympathy, for Davey.

marybel on October 2, 2009 at 9:41 AM

We don’t know when Dave had sex with these people and we don’t know whether he was the manager of the staff members he had sex with. So it’s not clear he committed adultery and it’s not clear that he was abusing his authority.

Treacher is a comic genius. His #1 reason to boink the noxious Letterman is gold.

At least we know Keith Olbermann would never do anything that dumb. He hates to buy wigs.

It’s unfortunate that a sleaze tried to squeeze money from a Sleaze. His mistake was thinking Letterman would be too embarrassed to ‘fess up and he would cash in. That mistake is why he is a little-s sleaze and Letterman gets the big ‘un.

I’m not totally sure what letter you get if your heart breaks for either of these dirtbags, but it’s probably a ‘b’.

True, but by saying this you pretty much admit “Late Night” is basically “Countdown with Keith Olbermann”, except with a studio audience, band and a stage door onto 54th Street. Narrowcasting like that is one reason why Dave never could beat Leno, because he was throwing out 50 percent of his audience right off the bat by making certain groups off-limits for jokes.

Why is Lettermans family “off limits”?
Jeff from WI on October 2, 2009 at 9:28 AM

Interesting point, Jeff. Sarah Palin’s family was certainly NEVER off limits with Letterman.

Forced to have sex with the boss? Why didn’t they just sue CBS for sexual harassment in the work place. That’s almost a guaranteed settlement. Somewhere in Alaska there is the sound of laughter in the air and some snarky comments floating in the breeze.

Is Letterman’s wife a victim, or another target for schadenfreude?

Did Dave do anything illegal?

If not, you people should lay off.

Whether you care or not, he is a husband and a father. Or do you not care about his wife and kid because he made a tasteless and horrible “joke” about Willow Palin? Yeah, what he did was in regards to the Palins was despicable, but so is this.

Where are all the law and order types so prevalent here who will stick up for Dave against this breach of his personal freedom (i.e. privacy)?

Aquateen Hungerforce on October 2, 2009 at 12:25 AM

No, Dave didn’t do something illegal — just immoral.

And what Dave did to Palin was deplorable, and might be forgiven except that he keeps doing it. My little Dave quote about Palin’s morals in the previous comment was from this week.

There was no breach of privacy. He testified before a grand jury and told the truth to them. That testimony became public record the moment blackmail charges were filed against his alleged blackmailer, Robert Halderman.

3. If so, could his actions be considered to be rape?

Inquiring minds want to know.
scullymj on October 2, 2009 at 9:15 AM

Maybe. But definately not rape-rape.

Your harrumphing over this is an interesting contrast to your usual creepy sneering over anything to do with Palin. I can’t think of a higher compliment than being called “contemptible” by someone so very contemptible.

Jim Treacher on October 2, 2009 at 10:41 AM

We don’t know when Dave had sex with these people and we don’t know whether he was the manager of the staff members he had sex with. So it’s not clear he committed adultery and it’s not clear that he was abusing his authority.

Jimbo3 on October 2, 2009 at 9:44 AM

Then why did somebody think it was something they could blackmail him with? Why did he participate in a sting operation to nab them?

And why would he have to be their direct manager in order for it to be an abuse of authority? It’s his show. He owns the company that produces it. He’s the boss.

Jim Treacher on October 2, 2009 at 10:48 AM

Guys like Letterman are usually huge collectors of child pornography, no?

joe btfsplk on October 2, 2009 at 7:16 AM

And he better get busy proven that he doesn’t own a large collection.

Just to take a page from the Alinski loons tactics.
