Letterman blackmailed into admitting sex with staffers; Update: Suspect identified?

posted at 10:23 pm on October 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

Weird. And awful.

According to a press release sent by Letterman’s PR reps, the host first received a package three weeks ago from someone who claimed to have information about alleged sexual relations he has had with female employees of the “Late Show.”…

“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life,” Letterman said on Thursday’s edition of CBS’ “Late Show.” “I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.”

As part of the testimony, Letterman admitted that he had engaged in sexual relationships with staff members.

“My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would,” Letterman said. “I feel like I need to protect these people — I need to certainly protect my family.”

Follow the link for a reminder that this isn’t the first extortion bid he’s been subject to. Yeah, he’s a leftist water-carrier and a sporadically nasty crank, but even so, my heart breaks for the guy for having his privacy violated so egregiously. Why acknowledge the extortion on the show, though? Even if the news broke in the papers, a studious silence would have led at least some people to believe that the accusations against him were bogus.

Update: Radar says it knows who the accused extortionist is.

Update: Verum Serum visits with the Ghost of Monologues Past.

Now I know why Letterman hasn’t retired from the show .. he needs women employees willing to have sex with him to keep their jobs .. he’s a no-class turd.

Just imagine what Letterman would be saying if this was happening to someone he didn’t like.

Why acknowledge the extortion on the show, though?

Because everything in LA leaks like a sieve. The news will be out no matter what and he’s taking the offense by getting out ahead of it. IOW, he’s going to try to control events rather than have them control him. That should also shorten the period of bleeding.

“my heart breaks for the guy”

BleedingheartPundit, I’m sure you must be drinking heavily, so why don’t we let that one pass. The issue is that Lefterman, the dessicated unfunny angry gargoyle, knew dang well that anybody he drags into his life (or his dressing room) has no reasonable expectation of privacy (not in the legal sense, but in the practical sense), but he’s such a selfish prick, he doesn’t care. So like the leg-humping dog he seemingly is, he just uses people who will eventually be the target of any expose of indiscretions by osmosis. What a scumbag!

I hope CBS has some kind of morals clause in his contract, but given the HollyLeft’s penchant for exalting rapists and murderers, this seems mild. Dan Rather is probably thinking, “Jeez, and Letterman gets to keep his job?”

I hope the Palins are somewhere right now clinking champagne, but I don’t think they’re the types who gloat. So we get to gloat for them. Do us a final stupid human trick, Dave, and play dead. Except, don’t play.

RobCon on October 1, 2009 at 10:50 PM

I feel sorry for his family. I feel somewhat sorry for his wife, as she surely knew the kind of guy he was before they married.

I would likely feel sorry for an otherwise decent person who’d had a weak moment, but with multiple affairs with his staff, little (if any) remorse, and with him being a hypocritical jerk who goes out of his way to destroy good people — naw. Nothing’s going to happen to him, anyway. He’ll still have his show and the Hollywood wagons are a goin’ to circle. I have to wonder if he really cares all that much.

Aardvark on October 1, 2009 at 10:50 PM

Id give him some slack but you know if it was some other famous person he would probably crack a joke. Since we like to play “what if it was ______”. What if palin or bush were forced to reveal they had sex with other people. You think he would keep his mouth shut?

Letterman said. “I feel like I need to protect these people — I need to certainly protect my family.”

Were the liaisons illicit? Yes. Were they consensual? Presumably. Were they illegal? No. It is not like David Letterman is the only guy in NYC who has been having some extramarital affairs. Were all the other adulterers similarly blackmailed? Blackmail is a crime. I can see that some Hot Air readers lack the compassion gene. No I am neither a liberal, nor a Demoncrat. Allah — the atheist — gets it. A lot of the self-righteous Pharisees posting condemnations of Letterman ought to listen to themselves. Bottom line: Adultery? Wrong. Blackmail? Wrong. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Letterman was wronged. Like Alexander Hamilton (remember him?) many years before him, he chose to come clean publicly rather than become the slave of an evil coward. That said, had Letterman not committed adultery, he could have saved his family a lot of grief — and deprived Allah of a lot of hits tonight!

I pity his son and his wife if she didn’t know about this.

David Letterman, how much adultery can you commit in 6 months of marrige or were you just screwing over the mother of your child so it didn’t really count?

Pity for being blackmailed when his behavior caused the blackmail…not an ounce.

Gracelynn on October 1, 2009 at 11:08 PM

Why acknowledge the extortion on the show, though? Even if the news broke in the papers, a studious silence would have led at least some people to believe that the accusations against him were bogus.

Studious silences of public figures sound good in theory but break down in reality. It would always be a thing lurking in the background. Sometimes it works- accusations about David Vitter’s infidelities seem to be background noise now. Most times it does not- just ask Gary Condit, John Anderson, or Bill Clinton.

Let’s also remember that Letterman isn’t “Dad of the Year” material. His child was born a bastard. This is less about the sex and more about sexual harassment in the workplace.
