Letterman blackmailed into admitting sex with staffers; Update: Suspect identified?

posted at 10:23 pm on October 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

Weird. And awful.

According to a press release sent by Letterman’s PR reps, the host first received a package three weeks ago from someone who claimed to have information about alleged sexual relations he has had with female employees of the “Late Show.”…

“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life,” Letterman said on Thursday’s edition of CBS’ “Late Show.” “I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.”

As part of the testimony, Letterman admitted that he had engaged in sexual relationships with staff members.

“My response to that is, yes I have. Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Perhaps it would,” Letterman said. “I feel like I need to protect these people — I need to certainly protect my family.”

Follow the link for a reminder that this isn’t the first extortion bid he’s been subject to. Yeah, he’s a leftist water-carrier and a sporadically nasty crank, but even so, my heart breaks for the guy for having his privacy violated so egregiously. Why acknowledge the extortion on the show, though? Even if the news broke in the papers, a studious silence would have led at least some people to believe that the accusations against him were bogus.

Update: Radar says it knows who the accused extortionist is.

Update: Verum Serum visits with the Ghost of Monologues Past.

a) Because it obviously true and b) He’s such a low-life scumbag, that he thinks he can get better ratings for it…which is almost certainly true in the ‘Age of Obama’.

echosyst on October 1, 2009 at 10:29 PM

I’d be a hell of a lot more sympathetic if this didn’t reek of karmic justice. He dumped awfully hard on Ensign and Sanford, as I recall. And that doesn’t even factor in the kind of treatment he’s heaped on Palin and her family.

I should feel sorry for him, but my sympathies are with the women he exploited and demeaned. I hope this aging pervert loses his job over this.

Allah does you heart break for the staffers who knew satisfying him sexually was the best way to keep their job security and get raises? Or maybe for his wife who he humiliated by being damn near 70 and still not being able to keep it in his pants?

Extortion is disgusting and his marriage is his business, but my heart never breaks for bad people when their own perfidy causes them pain.

10. Is today your day up on the desk or is it Mindy’s?
9. You know what I could use right before a show?
8. How about joinin’ me for some “stupid human tricks” after the show?
7. Is this how A Rod does it Dave?
6. You mean we can’t have healthcare but we can have this??
5. Once we get caught for this how the hell are you going to explain away all of those Palin jokes?
4. If I’m going to sue you Dave, I better do it while CBS is still paying you.
3. Y’know, that kidnapping thing regarding your kid was scary, but it sure wasn’t as scary as THAT!
2. Your ratings sure do suck, so how about we go public with this whole sex thing and I’m sure you’ll get a little bump.

Poor Dave, having his privacy egregiously violated and such.

1) He brought it on himself by being, well, lowlife show-biz scum.

2) As you noted yourself, he didn’t have to make a public confession on his show. Nobody made him.

3) Funny how family is now something to protect–when it’s his own ass in a sling. When it’s Palin, though, hey, anything goes!
