Conference call: Tim Pawlenty and the Freedom First PAC

posted at 8:48 am on October 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We had an opportunity to talk with Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty to discuss the launch of his Freedom First PAC.  Pawlenty says that he’s worried that freedom is being corroded by a “tyranny of a creeping bureaucracy.”  Pawlenty wants to re-elevate the principles of freedom and liberty, including an effort to educate people on their value and to impact current policy.  Pawlenty plans a particular effort to reach out to younger voters and a “purposeful outreach” to urban areas.

The measure of this will be the ability to grow small business without getting smothered by government regulations.  That will create jobs and economic freedom.  Pawlenty plans to push school choice as part of the Freedom First PAC.  We should be free to choose our own doctors and medical care without government making those decisions for us.  The founding fathers understood the importance of individual choice, but those principles have been diluted over the last several decades.

Freedom First PAC will be supporting like-minded political candidates.  They will have a large New Media contingent and experienced political hands on its board.

Questions:

  • What will be the focus of Freedom First PAC? — Mainly economic freedom.  Are we being true to the notion of a limited government?  Measures: How much we spend, how many regulations we have to enforce, etc.  Average budget growth in MN had been 19% before Pawlenty, under Pawlenty, it’s been 2%.  The last budget decreased spending 7.6%, which is the first time that has happened in Minnesota history.  We need that on a national level.
  • What will be the role of FFP in Pawlenty’s future plans? — Pawlenty says “it cannot be nor will it be about a future presidential campaign.”  Pawlenty “feels very strongly” about the need to speak out on these issues.  He’s vice chair of the Republican Governors Association and has to focus on New Jersey and Virginia this year and a number of races next year.
  • His thoughts on popular resistance to Obama’s agenda — Did the Obama election represent a significant shift in the political poles of the country?  That question has been answered by the negative reaction to the stimulus, the bailouts, ObamaCare, etc.  This confirms that the country remains center-right and that the pendulum is swinging back.  However, conservatives have to have more than a hope that the “other team will kick the ball into the dugout.”  That’s why FFP is important.  Education and intellectual support for conservative principles have to use freedom and liberty to push back against the “free stuff” sales pitches of statists and progressives.
  • “Tyranny can come in many forms … even in a well-meaning bureaucracy.”
  • Cap and trade – Pawlenty opposes cap and trade.  We can support the general goal of reducing pollution, but we have to do that in a way that follows “good science” and without wrecking our economy.  There are more reasonable ways to reduce pollution, especially by “massively expanding nuclear energy.”  He supports R&D through private-market efforts in energy production and usage.  Encourage basic research and let the private market make the rational decisions on application.  Carbon and natural gas are tremendous resources; the latter alone could provide our baseline power needs for 75 years.
  • The first order of business for federal government is national security.  We can’t be a free nation unless we feel secure.  FFP will include foreign policy as part of its portfolio because freedom and liberty depend on it.  Pawlenty is very concerned about the softening of our national security posture in this administration, and deeply troubled over the change on missile defense in eastern Europe.  The abrupt change and the betrayal of our allies has damaged our standing there, to the point where Lech Walesa says publicly that Poland cannot trust the US to stand up for them.

My thoughts:

Most readers know that I consider Pawlenty a strong potential candidate for Republicans on the national level for the next several cycles, should he choose to pursue office.  This is the next logical step for those ambitions, although it could also be a way for Pawlenty to shift to an activist track instead, like Newt Gingrich did with American Solutions.  FFP would allow him to become an influential player on a national basis through fundraising and speechmaking, both critically important to building credibility as a national voice for the GOP.  He has already begun that work with the RGA and with his increasing appearances on national television on policy issues.

Pawlenty correctly asserts that we need better foundations for arguing on behalf of freedom and liberty, and the last election shows that we need to do a better job of educating the public on these principles and how they apply to public policy.  We’ll see how FFP plays a role in that effort over the next three years, and especially in next year’s midterms.

Update: My good friend Scott Johnson of Power Line was also on the call, and has his thoughts here.

Wow, I didn’t see a single “Pawlenty should” or “Pawlenty needs to” in the whole article.

If Gov. Pawlenty is going to start getting presidential, you are going to need to change the picture. He looks like he is singing an Elvis ballad.

Obligatory, and Foundations, the sub-headings under the top two posts. Palin and Pawlenty. I could see either of these two, or both in the next election.

Those words are reserved for Palin.

Cap and trade – Pawlenty opposes cap and trade.

This is a big change. At one time Pawlenty was championing his own regional Cap & Trade program.

The Question now is what does Pawlenty really believe, to Cap & Trade or not to Cap & Trade, and can we believe him?

I’m still distracted by how much dude looks like Steve Perry of Journey. And that pic with him holding the mike ain’t helping.

I’m really starting to like this guy…

However, conservatives have to have more than a hope that the “other team will kick the ball into the dugout.” That’s why FFP is important. Education and intellectual support for conservative principles have to use freedom and liberty to push back against the “free stuff” sales pitches of statists and progressives.

That’s nothing that hasn’t been said here before, but I love the way that’s worded. That’s not just idealism, that’s a battle plan against liberalism.

What’s the governor’s thought on illegal aliens? Social Security? And so on. These are questions I need answered definitively from both Pawlenty and Palin before I’ll choose between the two.

Pawlenty was an amnesty supporter. Having said that, I believe Palin said she supported a path to citizenship and that having more Americans was a good thing.

Sounds like the same old same old to me. Ed, I can’t figure out what you see in this guy. His boilerplate is just like all the other complacent politicians’ boilerplate, yada yada yada. We are on the cusp of rolling back the liberal / progressive tide, and you’re touting somebody who’s as inspirational as a casket salesman.

The only solution to our problems is a restoration of the balance between the states and federal government. It is happening from the bottom up, as shown by the “Army of Davids” in the tea parties, etc. If Pawlenty wants to help with that, fine. Otherwise, he should join Huckabee, Romney and all the other has-beens in the obsolete parts bin.

Great motor, one of the true bulletproof blocks of its day, something you could use a hammer on and would come back for more.

As for Tpaw, he gave me conceal/carry and supported a state ID before voting rights or state benefits could be given, even though he was shot down by the libs over that.

However, he also made a trip with to the the arctic with whats-his-face explorer guy to lament the “very real truth” of global warming, so he needs to be taken to task on that.

I’ll be delighted to see Gov. Pawlenty taking on a more public role in advancing his principles and policies. He’s well-spoken which helps tremendously in communicating the complexities of economic issues. If he decides to run in 2012, he should be quite competitive in the primary.

Memo to Pawlenty: Global Warming alarmism is tyranny too.

Also, beware of the unintended consequences of “school choice”. For this to work they change funding away from property taxes and make it very easy to toss a kid out for bad behavior. There is a middle school in the county I reside in that failed AYP and students are being bused en masse into the new middle school in my district. The result? The schools on lockdown because of the hooligans who were bused in. Instead of this new school being a positive thing for education and home prices, it’s now a negative. These schools are mostly failing because of a lack of parenting, and there is only so much teachers can do.

Tim does present a boring facade, but a solid and staid demeanor might just sell in a few years after the nonstop rockstar bullshiite being thrown in our faces by the current ding dong inhabiting the White House

Pawlenty is the most opposite of Obama of the currently know potential GOP candidates. He use of “freedom and liberty” as his core message, one that I would use, will ring strong in the next two election cycles.

Pawlenty, Huck, MItt, they’re all interchangeable and boring as hell. Any of them as our candidate would have me watching for them to start holding their arm as if it’s handicapped and talking about themselves in the third person.

Jeff from WI on October 1, 2009 at 9:47 AM

So just exactly what would it take? A ventriloquist act perhaps? Some magic tricks thrown in during the debates?

Hollowpoint on October 1, 2009 at 9:52 AM

I like T-Paw, especially when he goes after Romney’s health care, but I disagree with Ed that he’s going to be a top player in 2012. He will be a strong 2nd tier candidate, but the reality is, our party nominates a person who has already been through the rigors of a national campaign (primary or general). That’s why it will be either Palin, Huck or Romney. T-Paw may impress enough people for the next time around, though.

Nothing like in-depth analysis and thoughtful reasoning to convince people.

You a Grayson supporter?

Bishop on October 1, 2009 at 9:54 AM

Cap and trade – Pawlenty opposes cap and trade.

Tpaw has a lot of explaining to do on why he has supported Ethanol mandates and subsidies(Instead of private market)and MN’s renewable energy mandate which will cost the consumer much larger energy bills.

He has earned the nickname “Govenor Green”. He seems to be running away from that now that he is running for national office but he was McCain’s (a supporter of Cap and Trade) Campaign manager.

I like Palin but she has no shot at 2012… you people(and Palin if she thinks she is going to run) need to give it up…

Huck is done too… he shouldn’t run in 2012… Romney has a shot but I prefer Pawlenty and he should just save his money…

ninjapirate on October 1, 2009 at 9:59 AM

Can I just ask, where did you get that picture of Pawlenty? He looks like a lounge singer. “It’s not UNUsual to be be nominated by anyone…”

All the Republican insiders right now seem to be missing something. Whether it is Leadership ability, a solid Conservative track record, or a personality. But there is an outsider who has all that. In fact, she has a #1 book that doesn’t even have a cover yet.

Elvis, Wayne Newton, and now Tom Jones.

You referred to people as “morons” for not believing as you do, a tactic you share with the esteemed Congressman Grayson.

I like Palin, but some of the Palin-worship around here is creeping me right the hell out. And I supported Teh Fred.

Have any paintings of Palin with a halo over her head hanging in your house yet?

Hollowpoint on October 1, 2009 at 9:48 AM

This is another one that gets me. Oh, you’re so cool and detached…

Quit projecting your fears about Obama onto Palin. She. Is. Not. A. Cult. Figure. Get back to me when little kids at school are chanting her name. Until that happens, this “cult” thing is nothing but sour grapes.

The fact of the matter is that candidates get elected because folks are enthusiastic about them. The reality of the situation is that the earlier that enthusiasm coalesces around a candidate, the better. Money, volunteers, coverage, all flow from that enthusasm.

Palin is an interesting case because the enthusasm for her is a carry-over from 2008. Folks are willing to take up for her at this juncture because it is obvious how unfairly she was treated during the campaign. It’s not a cult thing at all…

Nat Hound on October 1, 2009 at 10:05 AM

Palin’s strongest nay sayers:

The Obama Machine
MSM
Democrat politicians
Inside-the-beltway Republicans

I think those groups have been identified as “the PROBLEM” over and over again.

Barack Obama has demonstrated something very clearly. You are not going to make a fundamental change without a fundamentally different candidate.

You expose your inability to read trends. She’s been out of the loop for 8 months and she’s making headlines all over the world, continues to driving the left nutty, and the WH is doing comedy routines about her.. http://www.breitbart.tv/white-house-economic-advisor-knocks-palin-as-wingnut-in-comedy-routine/

She is the ONLY one they fear and for DAMN good reason. You’re still asleep N.P. That’s ok, we’ll carry the heavy load.

She wouldn’t fit in at the Country Club. She’s be emptying the ashtrays and busting tables because it was messy and it needed to get done. Can you imagine her kids at the club??!! My gawd her daughter used spit to fix the baby’s hair!! It just isn’t done at the club!! By the way, Tee Time is tomorrow at 8 and then a round of drinks at the Yacht Club later in the day with Biff & Buffy. Ta Ta

If Palin “Goes Rogue” and runs for President. It’ll be Ross Perot all over again. And, She AIN’T GOING TO WIN. She’ll ensure an Obama 2nd term if she “Goes Rogue”.

Palin is a QUITTER.

Rogue is not 3rd party. Rogue means “Reagan” republican. Unfortunately it will take a rogue to bring back the true nature of the party.
