“Political payback”: Michelle on Obama’s Chicago Olympics cronyism

posted at 10:00 pm on September 30, 2009 by Allahpundit

A fine illustration of the answer she’s given to critics of her book: No, it’s not that Obama and his inner circle are any more corrupt than other political chieftains, merely that they’re not any less corrupt, contrary to what the Hopenchange mythos would have you believe. That said, I politely disagree with my beloved boss’s assessment of The One’s “warped priorities” in making the trip tomorrow. As I said before, if the IOC cornered him on this, he has no choice politically. And it’s not as if he’s neglecting any duties on Afghanistan; he held a three-hour national-security meeting on the war just this afternoon. Plus, the left used to forever complain about Bush heading off to Crawford, as if to imply that he wouldn’t have a phone or a video teleconference hook-up just in case something somewhere went to hell; The One will be similarly appropriately outfitted on Air Force One, I’m sure. He’s getting on a plane, making a speech, then coming home — unless, per Bill Kristol’s prediction, he heads off for an impromptu Afghanistan visit first. What’s the big deal, really?

Fun fact: Olbermann’s segment tonight on Obama’s Copenhagen trip was entitled, I kid you not, “Is the GOP anti-Olympics?”

I saw the interview live, and thought Michelle could have done a better job with Hannity’s questions. He was trying to get her to connect the dots, and then had to do it himself.

I guess she wanted people to go read her article.

When you read her book, you see that Michelle has so much stuff on all these people, she probably wasn’t sure which way Hannity was trying to go. Her book is really scary and opens a window on the kind of crooks we have running our country. It’s appalling!
She’s right too on the fact that the host cities don’t fare well financially and cause many of their poorer citizens to be moved out of their homes when the Olympics come to town. The projects are always over budget and the citizens have to pay the price. But this is the first time I’ve heard that Valerie Jarrett is getting the FEDERAL govt. to help foot the bill. Is that constitutional??

Hello! Olbermann. MSNBC. What about this is shocking?

It is a surprise that he went out after the GOP for hating Olympics rather than attempting to pin the Tsunami death toll on a 2006 memo between Rove and Cheney.

I’ve got to disagree with you about this yet another trip to Europe that becomes a vacation for the filthy liar and his lard-bottomed spouse. The rat bastard traitor’s priorities this week are centered on winning the Olympics with no concern for the troops being killed as the bastard dithers with a strategy for Afghanistan.

Exit question for Allah: Three hour video conferences do little to further a strategy in Afghanistan. Even if such a strategy was agreed upon during today’s VTC, it would take several months to enact (short of the way the US left Vietnam in 1975). Why is it acceptable for you that the filthy liar in the White House is once again going to parties in Europe when American soldiers are being killed in Afghanistan? Doesn’t the CINC of the US Armed Forces owe it to the troops to make sure that one life is not needlessly lost??? I would suggest that getting drunk with corrupt former Olympians does little to protect the soldier who is also the child/spouse/loved one of somebody living around the corner from you. Well not you Allah, NYC is pathetically short of support of the military. The rest of the nation is different than the view from your bunker.

Chicago isn’t a state. It is just the corrupt epicenter of the Illinois mafia.

That being said, and understanding that Obama himself will get millions in kickbacks if the Chicago political system gets its hands on all those construction contracts, it appears that the IOC expects these high-visibility courtship rituals. Mitt Romney, who probably is the best to understand the politics of both the IOC and governing wasn’t critical of the filthy coward in the White House on his personal appearance on behalf of Chicago.

I would be okay with this if there were not so many more pressing matters for the filthy coward to be dealing with. How many soldiers are going to die because this week’s consideration of sending in more troops or otherwise changing strategy was curtailed by parties in Copenhagen?

So I would not mind losing the Olympics to any of the three other competitors. It’ll save Chicago a bundle, screw over Rahm, Axelrod and their cronies by short circuting the super-bowl of graft and kickbacks, and leave The One with egg on his face.

All due respect, AP, he’s been neglecting his duties on Afghanistan for some time now.

I mean one, maybe two, sit downs with the theatre commander since he posted him over two months ago… and basically file-thirteening the general’s request for additional troops and resources.

What’s perhaps is missed here is the message that this neglect, coupled with his Denmark sales trip, sends to our troops and, for that matter, our allies in theatre.

I really don’t know, but it seems that the Obamas have done it on several occasions now, and the media almost seems to glory in it. I have trouble thinking that W would not have been ripped to shreds had he done that.

That and the fact that he and Laura were clearly much closer to the values of regular Americans in their sensibilities than the present First Couple are. I always got the impression that W and Laura understood very clearly that they were being treated so specially here and abroad because of who and what they represented, not who they were.

drunyan8315 on September 30, 2009 at 10:41 PM

Imagine yourself on the side of a mountain somewhere in Afghanistan. It’s almost 7, about 90 degrees, and the shadows are fast growing longer. You haven’t slept since Tuesday morning, but somehow you’re not feeling tired.

It’s your third tour and you’ve got a wife and two little ones back home. Your little girl turned 4 on Sunday and, with luck, you’ll get to tell her Happy Birthday yourself in a few days, when you can get to a phone.

You got an email last week from your wife at work saying there’ll be more layoffs soon but she thinks she’ll make the cut, and for you not to worry. But you do anyway.

And yesterday word comes down that your CINC is still sitting on a request for more troops and that he’s talked just once to your Commander whom he posted over two months ago. One lousy sit down in two months.

Then you hear that he, the CINC, is flying with his wife over to Denmark to talk about games. Friggin’ games.

Down the road, in the distance, the signature blast of an IED splits the silence, and you wonder if any of your buds were in that area.

The shadows grow ever longer, as you wait for the night.

Michelle is very correct that Obama’s priorities are warped if we expect a presidency with national rather than parochial interests. It is indeed all about his personal embedded priorities as he has been taught and trained to execute in the Chicago School of Politics. No one on the IOC “makes” this POTUS go to Europe. That’s simply ridiculous.
As for the interview, well, Hannity has his own warped priorities and he didn’t properly warn his guest beforehand just what they were. But sure, the Boss could have been better prepared herself before falling into his gravity well. Hope she learns from the experience.

Why not? They (urban planners) are already doing just that around the country: “…the city (here it’s Saginaw, Michigan) is aiming to raze 430 homes by June 30, which translates to about $1.4 million in revenue to Rohde, based on the average cost to raze each home.

Aug. 6, neighbors on Grant near Nimons on the city’s East Side watched a crew tear down three abandoned homes in less than two hours. It takes longer to remove the debris, said Rohde, whose company makes 80 to 90 percent of its revenue via municipal contracts.”

dcwvu on September 30, 2009 at 10:21 PM

I know it’s insane to think about, but women can actually have careers and leave the house every now and then. Sometimes fathers even stay home to take care of their kids. This will probably be the death of this great country, but it’s hard to tell a chick to remember where her place is these days.

But you know what else seems petty? A man who doesn’t realize he’s the leader of the free world and still pretends he’s a Chicago community organizer.

I don’t completely disagree with Allah’s assessment of the situation, but I also find it hard to believe that sending his wife and Oprah wouldn’t have been enough already. I mean he got away with just sending Bill out to pick up the two hostages in North Korea, but for this he has to pull out all the stops? Maybe I’m just so cynical that I believe he would do this even if no one was asking him to, but with the First Lady calling it a sacrifice, I have a hard time viewing this trip as about anything other than Obama.

Esthier on September 30, 2009 at 11:22 PM

…../he has no choice politically.

Ap, I disagree with your assessment that he, Teh One, has a choice.

Everyone has choices and makes choices based upon what they perceive to be acceptable outcomes, to them.

You make choices every day, to post something or just to say screw everyone and not post. You, being an egocentric being will draw your ass out of bed and plop yourself in front of the screen because your ego drives the rest of your being. Your self-esteem tells you that you have to post something. Most of the time it is worth reading, but lately….well let’s just say you could do better by staying in bed.!!!!

I believe that Chicago has the games, and that Obama knows it. He is just not going to stake his reputation on anything but a sure thing, that’s not his history, period. And now he can remind us forever what a difference his awesome personal appearance made in the decision. Barf.

oldoldbabs on September 30, 2009 at 11:37 PM

Why not? They (urban planners) are already doing just that around the country: “…the city (here it’s Saginaw, Michigan) is aiming to raze 430 homes by June 30, which translates to about $1.4 million in revenue to Rohde, based on the average cost to raze each home.

cynccook on September 30, 2009 at 10:49 PM

So what’s the plan there in Saginaw? What is the point of all that razing?

I used to live Michigan. In Grand Rapids to be specific. Got Granholmed out of the state because working in Virginia is far better than not working in Western Michigan. I still own a home in GR that I can’t get rid of because there are no buyers. What is the point of razing without a follow-on plan? Unless, what you are talking about is really delapidated housing (a few years back the feds spent more in lead remediation on GR slums than what it would have cost to raze and build new) is there a reason for this activity?

dcwvu on September 30, 2009 at 10:21 PM

OMG! A couple of points:
1. Regarding the “supposed” corruption: my recently deceased friend Jerry was from Chicago. His stories about “the Chicago way” were legion and detailed. Those people take cronyism to new lows and initiated the phrase “the fix is in”…
2. Regarding MM’s kids: I know they’re not killing some high school horor student with a 2 x 4. so they’ve got THAT going for them… MYOB, and leave the kids alone…
3. Last: someone else mentioned Air Force ONE flying FLOTUS… The “Air Force ONE” ID is only used WHEN POTUS is onboard; else they use the aircraft tail number for ID… When “W” flew out to USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN on an S-3, he was on “Navy ONE”…

President Barack Obama will take several weeks to review U.S. strategy on Afghanistan and Pakistan, the White House said on Wednesday after a meeting between top U.S. officials about the region.

Several weeks on top of 8+ months on top of campaign promises.

Been there and done that. Whatever. Let’s party! Cupcakes, anyone?

I wonder what other Chicago-based companies Jarrett worked for or was on the Board that will make out in the deal. Her bio also says she was on the Board of Chicago based Navigant Consulting, a company that specializes in fraud and compliance consulting.

Wow. Three hours. On a war. Are you, like, totally serious? Cuz that’s just fab! A whole three hours. Wow! And now, let’s talk about the olympics for days.

WitchDoctor on October 1, 2009 at 12:52 AM

He’s the President of America, not Chicago. It’s not his job to try to get the Olympics for any American city.

So you’re wrong, the IOC didn’t have him over a barrel.

You know, that’s just off-the-scale bullshit. Maybe it’s time the boss limited you to a tiny corner of the blog where you can write reviews of Obama’s jeans and post your little Dude stuff. That’s about all you’re worth.

Obama has turned the Olympics into politics by doing this. It is wrong! The Olympics are for everyone not just Democrats. This is horrible for our country.

CWforFreedom on October 1, 2009 at 6:51 AM

Sorry AP but Obama is ignoring Afghanistan- Michelle is right. As Charles Krauthammer recently pointed out Obama conducted a policy review of the strategy there back in March- and yet a few months on he complained of there being no strategy in Afghanistan and is now demanding another policy review- and all the while US troops and their allies are being killed while a General’s calls for reinforcements are gathering dust on a table somewhere in the Pentagon.

Put bluntly men are being killed in a conflict while Obama dithers over what to do, complains about a lack of strategy that he himself implemented only a few months ago, and he spends his time giving speech after speech on TV & flying to a pointless meeting about the Olympics while not bothering to speak to the man he put in charge of the war. It’s a damn disgrace.

d1carter on September 30, 2009 at 10:12 PM

A much better question is why does she have to go at all? Really, where is it written that the first lady has to always go where POTUS goes? If she is accompanying him, the she would be on the same plane as he. (saving the tax payers mucho bucks). Since she travels ahead of him coming and going, it’s not about being with her husband. It’s about taking advantage of another opportunity to “jet set” around the world at the tax payers expense.
