Obama WH bribing Dem challengers out of primaries?

Perhaps this is just the consequence of having a hardball Congressional elbow-thrower like Rahm Emanuel as White House chief of staff, but as Jim Geraghty writes, it comes close to bribery using federal funds. When Democrat Andrew Romanoff made noises about mounting a primary challenge to Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO), the White House contacted Romanoff and made an interesting — and arguably corrupt — counteroffer:
Not long after news leaked last month that Andrew Romanoff was determined to make a Democratic primary run against Sen. Michael Bennet, Romanoff received an unexpected communication from one of the most powerful men in Washington.
Jim Messina, President Barack Obama’s deputy chief of staff and a storied fixer in the White House political shop, suggested a place for Romanoff might be found in the administration and offered specific suggestions, according to several sources who described the communication to The Denver Post.
Romanoff turned down the overture, which included mention of a job at USAID, the foreign aid agency, sources said.
Was this was a misunderstanding? Michael Riley got some pushback from the White House, but multiple sources tell him that the quid pro quo was fairly explicit:
The White House said that no job was ever offered to Romanoff and that it would be wrong to suggest administration officials tried to buy him out of the contest.
“Mr. Romanoff was never offered a position within the administration,” said White House spokesman Adam Abrams.
Yet several top Colorado Democrats described Messina’s outreach to Romanoff to The Post, including the discussion of specific jobs in the administration. They asked for anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.
As one state legislator tells Riley, the White House has every right to take a position on primary races. What they do not have the right to do is to use federal dollars to buy challengers out of primary races. Offering positions paid by taxpayer money to potential challengers to Democratic incumbents is political corruption of the worst kind. It involves interfering with the choices made by Coloradans, conversion of public funds for partisan purposes, and the appointment of officials for cheap politics rather than qualifications.
In fact, I seem to recall a presidential candidate who campaigned on changing that kind of Beltway politics. One candidate based his run on Hope and Change, on full transparency, on judgment and clean government. He promised a New Direction, not Chicago-on-the-Potomac. Who was that masked man, anyway?

Now this is big, really big…if this ever (and it won’t) was fully investigated and found to be true, it would eclipse Watergate, and the outcome would be the same.
This will not be investigated, reported, or talked about…you can bet Obama’s attorneys are contacting all involved right now…one word and it is political suicide, or worse.
right2bright on September 30, 2009 at 1:14 PM
Actually he won State by getting his opponents (including his former mentor Alice Palmer) all kicked off the ballot.
He won Senate by virtue of the fact that Alan Keyes was the only Republican running. Why was Alan Keyes running? Because the Republican primary winner, Jack Ryan, had to withdraw after his embarassing custody documents were released. Why were they unsealed? Because the Chicago Tribune sued to unseal them.
You should know how Obama got elected by now.

Barack Obama could no more be expected to have a “Wall of Separation” between government and politics than an Imam could be expected to have a “Wall of Separation” between government and Islam. Just as everything is Islam to an Imam, everything is politics to Obama.

Just another item on the list somebody is putting together in DC for things to investigate if the GOP takes back the house. You would think that the Obama people would be a little more nuanced now that there is open talk of the GOP possibly having the ability to air the whitehouse’s dirty laundry in the future.

I think the HA stance on primaries and bureaucratic picks is a little too nuanced for me.
If Obama just chose Robamoff for USAID, and we picketed him as a liberal cog in the Obama machine, that ignores a President’s perogatives and wastes fire best saved for open commies…
if Obama just leaned on Colorado donors the way Bush ran Toomey out for Specter, that’s just sensible pruning by the Party Head…

Incompetent & Corrupt.
I live in CO, and Bennett is already toast. He will lose in a landslide against whovever the GOP nominates for the 2010 election. It would probably be in the Democrats best interest to nominate Romanoff instead. However, Bennett is an pathetic Obama lapdog, so maybe that’s why they wanted to keep him.

So bribery in the US government and within the WH is now legal and not punishable by anything. They are able to openly bribe people with taxpayer money without fear of reprisal? I distinctly remember other OFFERS in return for ads. What about NEA as well? We have no true US government if this is allowed to go on without rebuke of some sort. They do this while they censure Rep. Wilson for an outburst. Something is really wrong. I don’t recognize my government anymore.

I don’t think slamming Obama for turning to career politicians to run agencies, or smothering candidates in primaries, is foul play. Bush did both. Maybe he didn’t combine them, but so what if he had? If USAID is not a waste of tax dollars, and Obama has the freedom to pick a Dem who he liked from Obama’s campaign, what’s the difference here?

Weak incumbents usually draw primary opposition. The good news is that Bennett will probably be easier to beat than Romanoff.

Obama knows that the spineless eunuchs of the GOP (Dem-lites/RINO’s/statists) wouldn’t investigate a double homicide in the congressional cloakroom with 50 witnesses. They are gutless slugs, equally deserving of replacement along with all the Dems.
If we do that in 2010 the net effect would be conservative GOP takeover of the House (one can dream, can’t one?). Then, perhaps, we can have real investigations of rampant corruption.
