Amazing: Palin’s book number one on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble bestseller list; Update: “It is truly unprecedented”

posted at 6:58 pm on September 30, 2009 by Allahpundit

Forty-eight days before the release and she’s already topped Dan Brown’s latest conspiracy-theory casserole at both top retailers. To put that in perspective, note that the book doesn’t even have a cover yet. So much for the Page Six hit piece about demand for her being slack.

No way to tell yet, obviously, whether the monster launch will have legs or whether it’ll deflate a bit next week after Palinistas are all done ordering their advance copies. But if it goes on to become a mega-seller, it’s a game-changer insofar as it’ll establish her unquestionably as the most prominent Republican in America, which leaves Huck and Mitt in an awkward spot before the primaries and presents the media with an interesting choice. Do they try to spin the sales as unrepresentative of her support among Republicans given that plenty of liberals are bound to buy the book for campaign dish and insight into the Palin “trainwreck”? Or do they follow lefty conventional wisdom that Palin would be the easiest person to beat in 2012 and talk up her appeal to Republicans to try to nudge her into a presidential run? (Righty conventional wisdom, of course, is that she’s the candidate the left most fears, but given their expectation of future Couric-type disasters during a campaign, I’m skeptical that that’s true.) Only one thing’s certain: If she hasn’t already been signed to write a second book, she will be soon. “Common Sense Conservatism” by Sarah Palin, perchance?

Update: Prognosis for mega-sales: Good.

HarperCollins will print 1.5 million copies for the book’s first run, the same number that was printed for late Sen. Ted Kennedy’s memoir “True Compass.”

Kennedy’s book, published earlier this month, currently stands at number six on the Amazon list.

A publishing industry source told POLITICO that they “cannot remember a non-fiction book taking off like this in the pre-order market. It became number one only a couple of hours after nothing more than a date announcement. It is truly unprecedented.”

Much of the 400-page book is based on journals Palin kept during her vice-presidential run.

Sarah Palin has the intelligent display of Courage under control that we have not seen in a long time. She made McCain look bad by sitting next to him, and McCain’s people never forgave her for being a Rogue that was real exposing McCain as a maverick that was fake. So if she can get passed the GOP’s normal death wish and come away with their nomination, then she will win the American Presidency in a landslide.

Well, I guess we can now all find out how Palin thinks. I may even buy the book. If anything, it should prove my doubts wrong…no?

It seems, at least when she’s in public, that she can be folksy but lacking tact in a way that often makes life difficult for her…kinda like Joe Biden.

She connects, and can communicate with ‘real americans’…but that only gets you so far. We have to know you’re considering more than your down home just folks values when you’re dealing with Pakistan or trade negotiations. Her book should hold the answer.

Ron Paul’s book is number seven on Amazon. I hope Palin’s sells well and revitalizes her image. I hope her poll numbers don’t represent her real chances.

However, you’d rather people not even mention such things. You go ahead and keep turning her into a cult figure. I’ll go ahead and hope she does some good for the conservative movement.

ernesto on September 30, 2009 at 8:04 PM

Too early to worry about 2012. If 2011 rolls around and Palin doesn’t have the poll numbers(favorables, advantage vs. Obama with independents), she’s not going to run. I think she’s realistic enough that she’s not going to launch a quixotic charge at 2012 unless there are indications that she can win.

She has the next couple of years to reclaim her image from the liberal media. If she’s not able to do that, she’ll still continue as a powerful force politically, but she won’t be able to launch a serious bid for the presidency.

John9400 on September 30, 2009 at 8:04 PM

instead of the election being a referendum on Obama’s first term, it’ll become a referendum on whether Palin knows what she’s talking about on policy. And she’ll be grilled so hard, and the mistakes will be so magnified as evidence that she’s unqualified, that some slip-ups are inevitable and centrists will freak out.

Allah, I tend to agree with you here. However, I can’t help but wonder how much more the detractors on the left’s credibility will slip. If the conservatives continue to win hearts and minds, all bets are off. I think this next year will be very telling. Especially the 2010 elections and how integral a part she is able to play in bringing the right back into power.

Well, that’s completely inadequate in terms of politics.

Once the book is released, she’ll be on the public circuit.

That’s a given.

It’s already a best seller. Hopefully, she’ll be able to controle the agenda.

AnninCA on September 30, 2009 at 7:51 PM

If Obama was facing re-election this year, then yes, her Facebook posts and op-eds, effective though they might be, would be inadequate.

However, it’s still three years out from the 2012 elections. Plenty of time to share her political perspectives. No need to make the same mistake of overexposure as Obama. Her speech in Hong Kong was a good start and this book will undoubtedly give us a much more complete picture of her political leanings.

Having seen old interviews and debates from when she ran for Governor of Alaska and considering that she will be running her own message from this point out, I think her book circuit will go much better than many expect.

I know you’re a fan of Bill Clinton, Ann. Trust HIS opinion of her political instincts and abilities, which he thought were considerable. ;)

Now, the catch is, who can really do that?

AnninCA on September 30, 2009 at 8:16 PM

but that only gets you so far. We have to know you’re considering more than your down home just folks values when you’re dealing with Pakistan or trade negotiations. Her book should hold the answer.

ernesto on September 30, 2009 at 7:57 PM

Oh you mean you want nuance…like bowing before the king of Saudi Arabia? Or stone cold dissing the PM of the UK at the UN? Or giving said PM (who is blind) a box set of DVDs? Is that what you mean?

angryed on September 30, 2009 at 8:26 PM

For the record, I don’t agree with the people who claim that Obama is an idiot. I also don’t agree with the hypothesis that he ie extraordinarily brilliant, either. I’m quite sure that his mental faculties are above average, but I’m also quite sure that those gifts are tainted with his left-leaning upbringing and the HARD left-leaning people who have surrounded him for days untold.

The fact that he chooses to continue this pattern of surrounding himself with quasi-communists and flat-out socialists should not be forgotten, and needs to be highlighted by anyone and everyone with a chance to influence voters’ minds.

uh ba dee, uh ba dee….That’s all, folks.

hillbillyjim on September 30, 2009 at 8:26 PM

I do. Can you believe this nonsense?

obligatory?

Oh man.

AnninCA on September 30, 2009 at 8:13 PM

While part of that might be due to Allah’s personal bias, I believe that a good part is simply baiting to increase hit count and comments. :)

I don’t really mind the negative Palin stories that are highlighted because I do feel it’s important to know what the opposition is saying. Echo chambers are not conducive to free thinking.

I’d just like to see more of a balance with the positive ones such as the WSJ excerpts of her Hong Kong speech or her own Facebook reposting of the foreign policy part of her speech getting more play in the main blog/top pick area.

People are clamoring for more details about what she thinks or are saying she’s all looks and no substance, but she gave a good bit of substance just in that one speech!

It would have been nice to discuss some of the fine points of policy from that speech here in more detail.

You have O’Reilly on too I see.

LuGu is such an a-hole. Unemployment at 9.7% and he thinks it’s cool not only to let them come here illegally, but then hire them and give them healthcare.

Money grows on trees crowd.

Sapwolf on September 30, 2009 at 8:28 PM

Too early to worry about 2012. If 2011 rolls around and Palin doesn’t have the poll numbers(favorables, advantage vs. Obama with independents), she’s not going to run. I think she’s realistic enough that she’s not going to launch a quixotic charge at 2012 unless there are indications that she can win.

She has the next couple of years to reclaim her image from the liberal media. If she’s not able to do that, she’ll still continue as a powerful force politically, but she won’t be able to launch a serious bid for the presidency.

Excellent observations. Thanks for posting that.

Hey Hun… so this is the anti-Palin blog?

MeatHeadinCA on September 30, 2009 at 8:29 PM

go to a starbucks and put the book next to your laptop inside

see what happens

blatantblue on September 30, 2009 at 8:04 PM

I did that once with a copy of National Review. I got not one but two snarky comments from assholes nearby. I can only imagine what Sarah Palin’s book would do. Hell I might throw down the $20 just for that reaction. Oooh the fun I could have going to midtown Atlanta Starbuckses (es?).

Sold.

Also watching BOR. Personally, I don’t care if unemployment is under 1 %. I want our immigation laws respected and enforced. I want all of our laws respected and enforced. That’s a primary role of government. And LuGu can’t even mouth the words “..illegal alien…’…they’re “undocumented workers”. Sheesh!

Red State State of Mind on September 30, 2009 at 8:31 PM

This blog is anti-Palin, and that’s a fact.

Seriously, I wonder who the ghost writers were?

Every public figure has them.

Electorally, I’m not sure during a time of crisis that the electorate will feel “safe” with a candidate who boasts of going “rogue.”

Obama’s coolness was certainly an asset. Still is.

SteveMG on September 30, 2009 at 7:40 PM

It’s common knowledge she worked with writer Lynn Vincent. It’s a very open and honest fact as opposed to Obama’s ghostwriters (where the plural does come into play).

Americans like guts and someone who can lead and that’s what her title conveys while twisting it back on those who introduced the term in an effort to denigrate her during the ’08 campaign.

Obama’s “coolness” was nothing more than a media fiction as quickly became apparent to all but the most devoted fan and he’ll only continue in his weak-charactered way to become more peevish and sulky as he continues to flail in over his head.
