Video: Community organizers pray to their new deity, or something; Update: Or do they? Update: Poll added
posted at 10:55 am on September 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
I’m tempted to make fun of this, but the First Mate was absolutely aghast at the idol-worship connotations of this video. The Gamaliel Foundation is a community-organizing group that acts as the ground troops for Barack Obama’s domestic policies, especially health-care reform. Anyone who has spent any time in church will recognize the worship cadence of this clip, which puts Obama in the place of the Lord in prayer:
A couple of points: This video came from last December, not recently, which means that the lunacy preceded the current debate over ObamaCare. This was at the tail end of the Democrats’ campaign attempt to cast their agenda in religious terms of social justice, although they have certainly picked up that effort again over the summer. If anything, it reminds people of just how bad Democrats and left-wing groups are at this kind of campaign. No one there seems to realize how shocking and sacreligious this will sound to actual churchgoers, who will rightly recoil at the worship of Obama as an idol in place of the actual Deity.
Update: I wonder what all of those on the Left who made fun of the Christian kids in Jesus Camp have to say about this. I’m guessing that we’re going to hear the sound of one hand clapping.
Update II: Or do they? After a couple of repetitions, I’m not sure if they’re saying “Obama” or “Oh God”. Sounds like “Obama”, and my wife — who is blind and couldn’t read the captions — immediately heard “Obama” when I played it for her. I’m not sure which it is, but it could be “Oh God” with poor acoustics.
Update III: The Jesus Camp question pertains either way, though.
Update IV: It does sound more like “Obama” in the “Deliver us” part. I’m really not sure.
Update V: Let’s add a poll and see what everyone thinks:

Exactly. It sounds like some are saying “God” and some saying “Obama”. I’d love to get my hands on a copy of whatever that minister lady was reading. But, at my church too, when we way “God” it comes off as “God”, even with hundreds of people in a big auditorium.

They’re saying “Hear us, O God.”
Standard boilerplate liturgical call and response, form-fitted for Marxist agitprop.
spmat on September 29, 2009 at 12:05 PM
I do not think they are saying Obama in that. It’s close but enough times I could hear God in there not Obama. Not saying that some in there may have said it but not sure if it was the majority.
jharada on September 29, 2009 at 12:05 PM
It’s Obama. Not Oh God.
lorien1973 on September 29, 2009 at 12:05 PM
The accusation is serious enough that what they said/didn’t say doesn’t really matter.
–Learned that one from the MSM.

I am. I hear “Obama”. I hear “Prophet” MLK.
What should I believe, you or my lying ears?
GunRunner on September 29, 2009 at 12:05 PM
Maybe it’s because I’m accustomed to hearing people speak together at Mass every weekend, but in my experience people are rarely perfectly in synch, so it would be very difficult to verify that this crowd is speaking more than two syllables (“Obama” rather than “Oh, God”). It just might sound that way because some are speaking slightly slower (or faster) than others.
Kensington on September 29, 2009 at 12:05 PM
It sounds to me like they’re saying “Oh God.” Although the petitions are a bit creepy, they’re not saying Obama. It’s not like we don’t have a million other examples showing that the left worships Obama, so I don’t think we need to create one that isn’t there.

This reminds me of the “can you hear “cracker” or is it “tracker”?” embarrassment here from a 3 yrs ago. Confirm the story pre-smear please.

Do not forget that the Left put out the “American Prayer” song to Obama, so this latest video falls in the category of idolatry regardless.
Blue Collar Todd on September 29, 2009 at 12:07 PM
I cleaned it up a posted to my YouTube account. I’ve got the audio plugged into my stereo.
They are definitely saying Obama.
The “prophet” Jeremiah (Wright) reference is at 32.
The “prophet” MLK reference is at 50.

“Smear”!, you would defend them if they were calling for heads, dressed in SEUI uniforms and putting armbands on Jews.
.
GunRunner on September 29, 2009 at 12:09 PM
Thank you.
I hear “Obama” pretty clearly.
“Deliver us Obama”
“Here our cry Obama”
This is what they are saying.
Right after saying “from the PROPHET Martin Luther King”.
I was not aware that Obama was a deity anymore than Dr. King was a prophet.
This video shows you everything you need to know about the psychosis of the democratic party.

Creepy….creepy….and sick.
These people, like most of the left wing sycophants, have something missing in their DNA soup. These wackos are beyond socialists, progressive fascists… they’re cultists of a sort, beyond all capability of reason.
I’d love to get into an argument with one of these fanatics about democracy and free market capitalism versus the kind of socialist fascist state they desire, except it wouldn’t really accomplish a thing. Arguing with a cultist never does, as evidenced here in other threads.
Spiritk9 on September 29, 2009 at 12:12 PM
Smear? IF they were saying “Oh God” instead of “Obama” there is still a long line of public and media ‘worship’ of Obama.
gwelf on September 29, 2009 at 12:12 PM
I agree. I wonder if we are dealing with a number of different attitudes here.
1. People that just can’t or don’t want to think people would worship BO or a church hold such an event. It just goes so much against their christan beleifs that they don’t want it to be so.
2. People that dislike BO so much that they her obama no matter what is being said.
3. Others that don’t hold the two views above and hear obama because that is what is being said by the majority of the people.
RagTag on September 29, 2009 at 12:13 PM
Thank you.
With the overwhelming evidence of Messiah worship coming from liberals concerning Obama, the fact that they would be praying to Obama is even being discussed shows how crazy these people are.

Abby Adams on September 29, 2009 at 12:15 PM
Confirm the story? Ed has posted the video and let people decide for themselves.
But it would be nice if the media in general would confirm stories before running them – but we end up with a situation where the media is disinterested in groups like ACORN, or the possibility of John Edwards having an affair but who blindly run accusations that people were yelling racist things at Palin/McCain rallies.

Ed, you are far too charitable in your updates.

From the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah:
8:22 Is there no balm in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
Why then is there no healing
for the wound of my people?
If the reference is to Jeremiah Wright, it is a dual reference.
Linnea on September 29, 2009 at 12:24 PM
At first it did sound like they were saying Obama but by the end it does sounds like “Oh God” to me. It does have that Leftist distort the Bible creepiness though.
CCRWM on September 29, 2009 at 12:24 PM
True but what she says doesn’t sound like something the prophet said so what Jeremiah is she referring to? She says something on the order of, like the prophet Jeremiah cried out……….., but I find no cry from Jeremiah that corresponds to what she said. Maybe someone with a lot better knowledge of the prophet can chime in.

@1:18 it sounds pretty clear that they’re saying “oh God.” It sort of sounds like “Obama” in other places. Maybe a mediocre-quality audio of a crowd chanting… something… isn’t enough to accuse them of idolatry?

If it were “Oh God”, then why not just go with the typical “Lord, hear our prayer”?
SillyRyno on September 29, 2009 at 12:28 PM
I went to Gateway pundit and Briebart to see how their comments compared to ours.
About the same as here.
Around 25% saying “oh God” and the rest in shock over the psychosis of messiah worship coming from the democratic party over a filed community organizer that has little to no accomplishments except riding into the White House on an MSM furnished unicorn.
I hear “Obama”.
Could be wrong, but looking at the history of messiah worship coming from the democratic party, the fact it is being debated shows how scary stupid Obama’s followers are.

I hear petitions like this with some regularity at Catholic Mass every week. It’s often “Lord, hear our prayer,” but variations like “Deliver us, Oh God” are common, too.
Kensington on September 29, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Ed –
This could be an example of looking for trouble where there is none (at least, not at the level insinuated) – I am hearing them say “God” not Obama. The fact that they are not synchronized makes it difficult to distinguish. The recited text (along with Bible verses) includes references to “God” – which would comport with a response of “hear us, oh God.”
I’d pull it…

Pfft. Even in the ritualized Catholic Mass they keep getting fancy, all “Creator God hear us” this and “Father God we trust in you” that. I wish they’d stick with “Lord, hear our prayer” myself. /grouchy Catholic

It’s definitely “Oh God”. Re-watch the video and say to yourself “Oh God” along with the crowd rather than reading the words. They are less in sync at the beginning, which makes it sound like “Obama” at first.

No, clearly MLK was not a prophet, but since she says, “[inaudible] the prophet Jeremiah, ‘Is there no balm…’”
No please go read Jeremiah 8:22 and listen to what she says. You have to be a moron to think anything sinister regarding that reference. I don’t really like it much, but this isn’t something that’s outrageous.

Liberal Spin Completed:
The Banner was Just a Regular Sunday School Banner that just happens to have a 501c nonprofit on there that supports Obama.
The “Everybody in, Nobody out” was merely showing inclusiveness.
The Martin Luthur King Reference was misheard, It meant “God the King.”
The content of hate in the prayer was just righteous anger over the need for healthcare.
The Hats and T-shirts (red (hey those have been popping up lately!)) are just what everyone wears to church nowadays.
And finally, the responses were not “Obama” they were “God”.

You are correct about the long term Obama connection to the Gamaliel Foundation — they are part of the old Obama-led radical Chicago crowd, including Ayers, Klonsky et al.
In his work during the run-up to the 2008 election, Stanley Kurtz at NRO connected the dots to Obama, ACORN, and perhaps most importantly, the education community radicals, like Bill Ayers and Mike Klonsky, all supported by the network of the the Gamaliel Foundation and ACORN.
Kurtz further pointed out that really the ONLY executive position Barack Obama ever held before being elected President — running the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (CAC) — resulted in self-admitted failure.
Kurtz, at NRO here, (links in original):
The one indisputable fact about the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, after all the radicals got their cut of the money, and Obama moved on, was that it was a failure. They admitted so themselves.
As we posted in more detail at the time, with quotations from their final report:
The fact that we now witness tapes of actual Obama-worshiping dupes from Gamaliel, only suggests that we may be in a lot bigger trouble than any of us has ever imagined.
