Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on September 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Allahpundit already posted about this, but it’s still a worthwhile addition to the OOTD library because of its many levels of bad choice.  Barack Obama has decided to put his international influence on the line not to push for more support in Afghanistan or sanctions on Iran, but to act as Salesman in Chief for Chicago and its Olympics big for 2016.  Politico’s Eamon Javers and Nia-Malika Henderson can’t quite comprehend the politics of it:

But now that he’s traveling to Copenhagen personally to make the pitch Friday, some experts say he better not come home empty-handed.

The White House knows that the decision to go before the International Olympic Committee is fraught with political risk: The president could be embarrassed on a world stage if he doesn’t land the games.

Plus, more than a few Americans are surely scratching their heads — with his inbox crowded with a troop request for Afghanistan, a new secret nuclear site in Iran, sky-high unemployment and a health care bill in Congress, does the president really have time for this?

Supposedly, the White House was worried about how Obama would look if he didn’t personally appear in Copenhagen to press the IOC.  Well, he would have looked like … a President with bigger problems on his plate than which city would lose tons of money this time in hosting an overblown sporting event.  Obama isn’t the President of Chicago, after all; he’s the leader of the free world, with a big decision pending on a war he’s presently supposed to be fighting.

So what are the potential outcomes?

  1. The IOC awards the games to Chicago, which makes it look as though Obama got tipped off and set up his trip as a political stunt.
  2. The IOC awards the games to another city, and Obama looks like a fool.
  3. In either case, everyone wonders why Obama got personally involved at all.

There is a reason why heads of state usually remain above this kind of issue, which is that they’re supposed to be above it.  Obama still hasn’t learned from the Gates arrest that presidents don’t need to get involved in municipal affairs.  (graphic by Paul C)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

There will be a pretty petty, yet stern speech about how we still have a ways to go to repair all the damage done by “the previous administration” to our world standing and how we should take our country further down the drain just to show how sorry we are for our past transgressions.

There is no sarc tag because I am dead serious.

Frankly I hope they give it to Rio. My hope is by 2016 Chicago will be far off the National radar. A sad place where good, honest honor students are killed by wolfpacks of their own race.

Where is Sharpton, Jackson, Obama, Cosby? What, it’s only a real tragedy if Caucasians are the perps?

re: can’t get the politics of it.

In this case the only politics are the local ward healers who are owed favors that need to be repaid. There aren’t any national politics involved here that should be addressed by the President. This is all about money; graft, corruption, kickbacks, payoffs, and campaign contributions.

That and the ego of our Megalomaniac Narcissist in Chief. After all this is his country now and he wants his tribute.

Patrick Sandusky, media director for the Chicago 2016 OC was interviewed on the Roe Conn radio program yesterday. According to him, he learned that BO was coming to Denmark only as they were going through a practice run of their sales pitch. Really. No plans for the One to be there. Just ddecided to ‘drop in on them’? What a freakin’ narcisist. Any opportunity to flap his gums, but no time to do ant real work. Lord I pray that Chicago does not get the Olympics. This city is in sad enough shape as it is.

Can you imagine the how fast the Olympic torch will have to be ran through the streets of Chicago?

shov74 on September 29, 2009 at 9:24 AM

Having the Olympics in Chicago is the only viable way to erase the evidence, rid South Chicago of all the slums, run-down projects, and other failed attempts by Obama the Community Organizer and company.

Thus, it is imperative that the IOC award Chicago…erase the evidence of the past, set a forward-looking agenda…yep, sounds plausible.

Of course, bulldozing several square miles of South Chicago needs to be done….but if done in the name of the Olympics, then it is a good thing, otherwise…it’s racist, might even make Obama look bad. Can’t have that, can we?

And the murderous South Side gangs and thugs? They’ll be part of the Olympic venue security team.

And the crooked Chicago pols? They’ll reap millions, as they always seem to do. Rezko will be released early, as his expertise is needed in the Windy City…unique qualified talent, sorta like Timmy Geithner.

Yep, Chicago. Good old deep-dish Chicago. Deep dish of what…well, we all know.

ObamaThink:

Afghanistan — A hell hole requiring actual presidential decision making responsibility. A place where the US military needs to break things and kill people… or flee.

Olympics — An entertainment venue for one-worlder junkies. An international stage with ample opportunities for America bashing. Kind of a UN… for the pretty people, like himself.

TXUS on September 29, 2009 at 9:38 AM

Isn’t it funny, that Obama’s ONE achievement, his one REAL success from his first year in office won’t be keeping the Iranians from getting nukes, helping protect Eastern Europe, supporting democracy in Central America, winning the war in Afghanistan, keeping the Norks from getting the bomb…

It won’t be solving the economic crises, reducing unemployment, fixing the banks or the housing market, etc…

It will be getting the O-lympics to come to Chicago, which he had little if anything really do do with in the first place.

Awesome.

catmman on September 29, 2009 at 9:41 AM

Politics and sport don’t mix. Think Malo.
– Can anyone doubt the Olympics will not be used in a similar fashion in Chicago to advance anti-Israeli sentiment?

– How do you explain President Barack Hussein Obama II’s political radicalization of the Olympics from an office in the White House to a personal IOC appearance? Malo couldn’t either.

But Rosengård lies in the world’s most generous welfare state. Those who cannot provide for themselves and their families have a right to social welfare, which according to Swedish law must cover the cost for food, clothes, shoes, leisure activities, health and hygiene, health care and medicines, a daily newspaper, a phone, living expenses, electricity, commuting to work, home insurance, membership in a workers’ union and unemployment insurance. The frustrated and angry youngsters in Rosengård get health care at a minimal cost, free dental care, free school, and free college and university education, with the right to student benefits and loans. Social inequality is, therefore, a poor model for explaining not only a rise in crime the neighborhood has seen in the last few years, but also in political radicalization.

This way Rosengård not only stands as a monument over the once so egalitarian ambitions of the Swedish Social Democracy. The neighborhood has also become a symbol for the fact that too many of the country’s Arab immigrants have brought anti-democratic values from their home countries; values that neither “dialogue police” nor the world’s most generous welfare system has been able cure. And it is also becoming a symbol of a Western country that is prepared to compromise with those values.

I am reminded of Katrina and Derrion Albert.

Perhaps they can bus the homeless, drug addicts and drunks down to South Bend and they can stay on the Notre Dame campus. The ND leader seems to be a big Obama backer.

Jeff from WI on September 29, 2009 at 10:12 AM

BTW, the Philadelphia Inquirer ran a story today saying that Chicago currently ranks third out of four cities still in the running for 2016. (Madrid is first, followed by Tokyo.) Some sour grapes here, because Philly put in an outstanding bid to be the USA city but got muscled out by the Chicago gangsters. Philly already has 21 of the 26 venues needed for a Summer Olympics. The additional expenditures needed would have been minimal compared to any other U.S. city. Plus it is 2016, an American Revolution anniversary year.

Chicago has only 12 or so of the needed venues. This is going to be a boondoggle of immense proportions for landowners and developers in Chicago, and a nice way for Obama and the Daley machine to gin up some short term jobs in order to mask the long term destruction of the Chicago area economy by the Daley/Obama thugocracy.

rockmom on September 29, 2009 at 10:17 AM

Yes, where…where, other than conservative blogs, are those that see the big picture, that see this “Obama’s Folly”, that when he comes home empty handed, it will not only make him much weaker politically, but also be further evidence that America has turned into the laughingstock of the world.

Having lived thru and been a part of the Atlanta sham’o'lympics, I hope Chicago doesn’t get the nod, but with the salesman-in-chief sticking his nose into the middle of it, I fear the repercussions for the rest of us.

In 2012, will there be any pieces left to pick up?

ornery_independent on September 29, 2009 at 10:22 AM

I’m a little late getting in on this thread this morning but I couldn’t let it pass without linking to two photoshops I did yesterday about this subject. As a Marine Corps veteran, I take a great deal of offense to Barry winging his way over to pot-land while men and women in combat don’t know the extent two which the country is prepared to support them. So that, and Barry’s “fun with AF1 flyovers” inspired me to create these two:

Flyover 1
Flyover 2 (the caption on the banner says “You government at work for you” in case you can’t read it)

I don’t think the President or his staff are quite this “in your face” but I think that’s only because they view the military and two wars like most progressives- an impediment to their ultimate agenda of social engineering.

The IOC awards the games to Chicago, which makes it look as though Obama got tipped off and set up his trip as a political stunt stud.

The Peter Principle is the principle that “In a Hierarchy Every Employee Tends to Rise to His Level of Incompetence.”

Obama reached the level before he took office. Now he’s just acting it out.

The Zoo Keeper on September 29, 2009 at 11:44 AM

Tipped off? Possibly. But, ‘the greater the risk, the greater the reward.’ Or, the international exposure and bully pulpit are being taken advantage of to further his image. Even if all they are doing is making it look like his presence there had an impact on the decision.

I seriously doubt O would go unless he had a really good idea that it was a done deal. Imagine the fallout if he went (with all that is on his plate right now, and soldiers dying in Afghanistan with an apparently unsupported mission) and Chicago didn’t get it.

LEBA on September 29, 2009 at 11:48 AM

I have to admit, as much as I think Obama is WAY out of his depth as POTUS – I don’t have a problem with him taking a personal interest in having the Olympics in Chicago. He is from Chicago – the Olympics are a great event, and it’s good for the country to host them.

Really, much ado about nothing. If there is some back alley deal involved, well, of course there is. Still, it’s not a big worry. At least he’s not golfing.

But after sternly lecturing Iran on its international obligations Friday, President Obama didn’t call for sanctions. He called for more negotiations. And then, as the Iranians were spitting in his eye with the missile test, he jetted off to Copenhagen to lobby to have the 2016 Olympics held in Chicago.
No wonder Nicolas Sarkozy holds him in contempt.

Obama isn’t the President of Chicago, after all; he’s the leader of the free world, with a big decision pending on a war he’s presently supposed to be fighting.

But he wants to be King of the World. Having the Olympics in his “beloved” Chicago is just the first step. (Actually second, chairing the UN Security Council is his first)

Susanboo on September 29, 2009 at 12:27 PM

I am usually impressed with the posts around here. And sometimes when I said so, I was mocked.

Well, I don’t know about the Olympics or what choice will be made chiefly because I don’t know the facts or who will make the selection.

We all have an idea about our national defense and the policy maker who is in charge there.

Anyone who believes that Afghanistan is not a done deal needs to take a good look at our Dear Leader without the scales provided by the liberals and a few drone blasts near Pakistan and the successful Navy Seal attack on the Somali pirates.

His programs need money and the comments about the necessity for the Afghan war were just like many other noises coming from The One. I would ask that you look at the radical, and even sinister side of our Leader in light of His past and the general run of His actions to date.

Why should he talk to any soldiers? You don’t listen to the cries of the drowning as you walk away.

It will take a strong political wind to move Him from the path on which he is leading us. There is only decimation, desertion and darkness waiting for for the many who serve our nation and the western ideal of democracy and freedom.
