Iran responds to west’s sanctions threat by, um, test-firing nuclear-capable missiles

posted at 8:04 pm on September 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

Nothing to worry about. Just a figment of your fearmongering, military-industrial imagination.

Iranian state television said the Revolutionary Guards, which controls Iran’s missile program, successfully tested upgraded versions of the medium-range Shihab-3 and Sajjil-2 missiles. Both can carry nuclear warheads and can reach up to 2,000 kilometers, putting Israel, US military bases in the Middle East, and parts of Europe within striking distance…

The Sajjil’s solid fuel propellant means it can be stored for significant amounts of time in underground missile silos prior to being launched.

Time magazine poses an interesting question: Will the nuclear standoff re-energize Iran’s green revolution? A Mousavi spokesman seized the moment over the weekend by insisting that their side doesn’t want a nuclear bomb, but (a) Khamenei and Ahmadinejad say the same thing and no one believes them, and (b) Mousavi himself issued a statement tonight expressing his opposition … to sanctions.

In Tehran, however, opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi spoke out Monday against any sanctions, saying they would force ordinary people to pay the price of the “wrong and adventurist foreign policies of the government.” In a statement posted on a Web site affiliated with him, Mousavi said: “Sanctions will cause great pain to many people for whom the plight of being ruled by paranoid statesmen is enough.” A former prime minister, Mousavi has emerged as the leading political foe of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad following a disputed presidential election in June.

Don’t expect any galvanization, in other words. I’m tempted to give you Gibbs’s White House spin on the missile tests today, but in lieu of that here’s lefty nuke expert Joseph Cirincione delivering Team Barry’s talking points even better than they can. In a nutshell: Obama’s a genius, we’re holding all the cards, and today’s tests are likely just a peevish little expression of machismo ahead of Iranian concessions at nuclear talks this week. (cont’d below)

If you believe the Daily Express, the Saudis are sufficiently skeptical that any concessions are forthcoming that they’ve already greenlighted an Israeli attack on Iran; as my own two cents, I’d add that North Korea has a habit of sporadically firing off missiles too and they remain a nuclear threat to this day, as far as I know. If doves want a real reason to believe that Iran’s not as crazy or reckless as it seems, read down into today’s NYT piece on the missile test for details about the Revolutionary Guard buying up 51 percent of Iran’s telecom company. They’ve been expanding their economic reach into every major Iranian industry for years now, which is actually a relief in one sense: The greedier and more corrupt they are, the less likely they are to do something nutty that would disturb that. They’ve turned huge swaths of Iran’s economy into a racket, and a man with a good racket going normally isn’t inclined to disturb that. Emphasis on normally.

Update: Better late than never, Ron Rosenbaum awakens to the fact that the 2007 NIE alleging that Iran’s bomb project had ceased in 2003 was a politically motivated debacle by U.S. intelligence:

But the disgraceful 2007 NIE minimized the other two aspects of nuclear weapons making.

It should be a major intelligence scandal and despite efforts by the heads of US intelligence to walk it back after the fact, it became the conventional wisdom of all too much of the wonk and pundit community. When are they going to fess up that they were had?

Shouldn’t the journalists who were conned by the 2007 NIE (just about all of them), fooled again so soon after the Iraq intelligence fiasco, be doing everything they can to see who suckered them and why? Or are they afraid it will just further expose their ignorance?

Sigh. Yeah, I think war with Iran is inevitable. They’ll get some pretty good first shots in though, because we have a p*ssy for a leader that will do nothing but apologize at the top of his voice while waving a pink tinged white flag before he’s impeached and we kick Iran’s ass.

I consider myself pretty ‘up’ on world affairs as a sort of conservative realist, but Iran seems to be the wrench in the whole thing, and I don’t have a freaking clue what’s going to happen.

My fear is, whether its obama or hillary or mccain or even ROnPaUl! in the white house, my fear is that they don’t have a freaking clue either.

Look at Iran: they’ve attacked our embassy, taken hostages of ours, created this proxy hezbollah which blew up HUNDREDS of marines in lebanon in the 80s, iran today is responsible for what — 30% of us deaths in iraq? (by weapons, training, and border openings)

THey are the “one big enemy” of america that has remained constant 30 years after the Ayatollah.

And man, look at their REACH.

From Iran, to their puppet Assad in Syria, to the Lebanon (or at least the Lebanon they USED to control before they assassinated PM hariri), there is this Shi’a cresent-looking swath of land, controlled by IRAN, defended by their proxy army HEzbollah.

Israel and Saudi Arabia have had meetings over what to do about a nuclear iran.

Let that one sink in.

I don’t have a clue what happens, but i do know what happens if iran gets the bomb: if they use it, WWIII; if they don’t, a general arms race begins with the Saudis/Gulf states, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Russia, and Pakistan building/increasing their nuclear arms capabilitiies.

I don’t know, and it’s freaking scary….

I’ve actually thought about that. As in, how do you ‘reach’ (freak out) Achmadinijad?

Honestly, since our human spy network over there is dreadful, and we literally have less knowledge of the inner circle than say, ABCNews, I would suggest ‘nudging’ the CIA to take out one of the iranian higher ups. Maybe the defense minister; he’s blown up israeli embassies after all, he’s no “innocent”.

We could do it, then contact A-jad and say “we won’t run out of bullets, you will run out a cabinet, and then it’s your turn” or something like that.

It’s AWFUL but i’d imagine it’s the only way. if he believes all his millenialist junk it’s one thing; but if he doesn’t he’d back down lest he lose his own neck?

I will bet anyone a good bottle of wine that his circle of intellectual monkeys said to themselves, “Plan? Sure, how hard is that? Geez, those stupids can’t think…”

A week later they are sitting around, looking at each other. Haggard, worn out from 20 hour days and too much pizza cum arugula. That said, Barry IS an arugula-eating idiot. He is the very worst type of egghead—all form, no substance. The stance he and his insentient acolytes have on Iran is beyond obtuse. Talking means zip to the Mullahs. Sanctions haven’t worked in the past, and they won’t work now. China and Russia aren’t gonna play with Barry on their team, and the inane Chavez has already promised Iran all the oil they need.

Barry is either hoping that Israel launches an offensive on Iran, which inaugurates a massive Mideast conflagration (since this would truly be the catastrophic event he needs to take greater government control), or he thinks he can amend his woosy image by launching an American offensive with the few allies we have left. I’m inclined to believe the former is what will actually happen.

The History Channel just ran a two hour documentary on “The Day after Disaster” where terrorists nuke D.C.

They spend 120 minutes lecturing on the after effects and continuity in government.

The gratuitous smear of Cheny and other selected, unelected government officials who would be protected gave away the objective of the documentary.

It it ever did happen, I’d like to think it won’t turn out quite the way the liberals think it’s going to turn out, but that’s just my wishful thinking.

Their PsyWarOps programs get tedious after a few minutes.

Sounds like “Fallout 3″. If that is to be the case, I will be the guy with the rocket launcher.

Not to worry! Barack Obama has a cunning plan, as evidenced by his cleverly withholding the fact that he (and Bush, and the CIA) knew about Iran’s second Uranium enriching facility at the perfect time to get our Western Allies to support sanctions.

See? It doesn’t matter what Iran does, if you can get a disarmament agreement at the U.N.!

The Bush Government knew that Iran should have been neutered ASAP.

But the Leftist Politics of Obambi/Reid/Pelosi/Clinton prevented them.

NOW … WE ARE BEGINNING TO BE “AT THE MERCY” OF RADICAL ISLAMIC NATIONS.

Sad.

Thanks to Obamas inaction and his known wimpish personality, we’ll be embroiled in a war. Israel will not let this stand.

A curious thing crossed my mind the other day. It is a game of What If? I plated it with Iraq and then played it with Iran. The results? Not good for the next President who takes action on information that might be flawed, ginned up, etc.

Iraq 1990. Invaded Kuwait after lots and lots of consternation. The “world” invaded Iraq and kicked em out of Kuwait… but left Saddam in power.

Iran 2009. Rigs an election and stifles popular unrest. The world condemns, except our President who has already staked part of his presidency on reaching out to the IRNA.

Iraq, 1990s is suspected of developing WMD and is subject to an inspection regime.

Iran, subject to the bumbling idiots at the IAEA… Is Mohamed El Baridei still in charge over there? If he is… No wonder.

We have a leader who has an ideological agenda and a guard that has subjected the civilian populace to horrors, yet the USA does nothing. A leader who threatens Israel and the United States. That leader Saddam Hussein. He wields his WMD (or the belief in WMD) to great effect throughout the entire 1990s and keeps his people under his thumb.

In Iran, same difference except the leader is more rabid and backed by the religion theocracy.

So what happens in 2014 when inspection regimes fail, the people cry out and Iran makes a move on Saudi Arabia?

A US president will take action… after 9 months of telling Iran we are going to war with them. And then we fail to find the enrichment programs or WMD. We still find evidence of mass killings (as in Iraq) and torture chambers. We find evidence of corruption, etc. But the rabid left will claim… (GOP President) is a LIAR. He manufactured it. Forgetting the long history Iran had with all presidents GOP and DNC. Forgetting the countless UN resolutions and the empty promises. Forgetting the mass killings and opression. Forgetting everything good about why we went to war and instead shifting that blame to a decisive US President.

If we had a real president he would say that whole deal about cancelling the Missle Shield, it was all a game to bring you out of your shell. We are doubling down on the missle shield and we’ll put some in Iraq and Afghanistan as well.

Nah the Israelis will act as they have before in both Syria and Iraq.

dogsoldier on September 29, 2009 at 9:03 AM

I heard Iran has expressed it’s desire to construct the missile shield that the U.S. has cancelled for Poland; Such a deal!

Now who will argue the suggestion that the massive number of centrifuge equipment didn’t come from one SADDAM HUSSEIN??? They only had a year or two to sneak ‘em out of Iraq and in to Iran.

GoldenEagle4444 on September 28, 2009 at 8:20 PM

What are you saying? The enemy of Saddam’s enemy is Saddam’s friend? But that would mean Ah-hacka-lugee-on-mah-dinnerjacket would have been friendly to Saddam? Oh Yeah, and he would’ve danced and watched Saddam go down in flames. Or was that oil fields go up in flames?

disgraceful 2007 NIE… It should be a major intelligence scandal

disgraceful? scandal?

No. I can think of another word to describe a false report manufactured to influence the political process by favoring an enemy country, that produces and supplies military equipment to enemy terrorists in a war against us…

trea⋅son
–noun
1. the offense of acting to overthrow one’s government or to harm or kill its sovereign.
2. a violation of allegiance to one’s sovereign or to one’s state.
3. the betrayal of a trust or confidence; breach of faith; treachery.

Forget the left. What we must do is REMEMBER. What we must do is say ‘Thank You‘ to the men and women who bring the tyrant down. What we must do is reach out to a new foundling republic and offer our help and history. What we must do is REMEMBER, there is only one course:

FREEDOM!
