Did the Olympics Committee force Obama to go to Copenhagen?
posted at 4:15 pm on September 28, 2009 by Allahpundit
Geraghty’s spot on. There’s no way The One would risk his political capital on a personal appeal in Denmark unless he’d been assured that Chicago will get the games if he makes a cameo. It’s a done deal; the only question is who approached whom. I think the IOC probably forced his hand: Given the terrible optics of the trip plus the fact that, as Geraghty reminds us, Obama said as recently as two weeks ago that he wouldn’t go himself, he had every incentive to avoid this — unless the IOC sweetened the pot by promising him the games if he showed up. Once they did that, he had no choice. Imagine the public’s reaction if he stayed home and the games were awarded to another country, and then someone at the IOC leaked the fact that he’d been told that Chicago would have been the pick if he’d taken a day out of his schedule for a little gladhanding in Denmark. Everyone who’s dumping on him right now for going would be dumping on him then for not going, and he surely knows it. I can just picture the angry blog posts estimating the number of jobs and total revenue lost to Chicago because its favorite son wouldn’t get on a plane. The IOC made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Well played, chumps!
Via Breitbart, here’s Gibbs doing his best to explain the reason for the trip without explaining the real reason for the trip. Smart exit question from smart lefty Michael Roston: Given the metaphysical certainty that there’ll be massive corruption involved in Chicago’s handling of the games and the equal certainty that righty blogs like this one will rub The One’s face in it, how bright was it of him to get involved in this in the first place?

Ummm, because it’s a recession? Because the Olympics are nothing but a big ol’ money pit for most sites? Because who gives a flying f*CK where they’re held? Because there are bigger issues at hand than the Olympics that perhaps the President should focus on?
I honestly couldn’t give a sh*t where they hold these things. Really. They’re being held in my home country next year, I think, and seriously I had no idea until my cousin told me over Labor Day. I DON’T CARE.
If this is the only thing the President has to worry about right now, then fine. But let’s face facts, some ugly stuff is going down and he’s too busy worrying about the Olympics in Chicago to take any kind of lead on any of it….

Obama doesn’t have time to fulfill his duties as Commander-in-Chief, but he does have time to fulfill his duties as Chicago Olympics lobbyist-in-Chief, National Car Salesman-in-Chief, Health Care Takeoverer-in-Chief, Speechifier-in-Chief, Bank Nationalizer-in-Chief, Child Indoctrinator-in-Chief, Economist-in-Chief (how many jobs has he “saved or created” now? – answer: If you still have a job, Obama considers it one that he saved. The “created” jobs are all in his bloated administration.).
The campaign is over and so is most of the worship. It is time for him to start serving the country that elected him and stop serving his own personal and partisan political interests.

I can just see Bill Ayres Bernadette Dohrn, Rev Wright and Rev Pflegar being the ‘ambassadors of good will’ for these Olympic Games. The Olympics will bankrupt Chicago and the graft will bankrupt the Olympic Games which is a good thing for that venomous anti semitic organization. Kill two birds with one stone.
eaglewingz08 on September 28, 2009 at 5:37 PM
I live in Chicago and would be extremely happy to see the Olympics go to Rio. The argument is whether or not it’s worth it for the host city. We have lost too many major conventions due to skyrocketing union costs. At a recently held tradeshow, I was charged $150 when I requested an extension cord and had to wait four hours for a union electrician to plug it in. And by the way, try disputing that bill. Now imagine how this city will get gouged by all unions waiting to feast off an entire Olympic Village. There will be nine years of girding our loins waiting for the inevitable tax hikes to pay for our Dear Mayor’s Last Wish before he kicks.
sherry on September 28, 2009 at 5:37 PM
Considering the fact that Chicago is less than thrilled about hosting the Olympics in the first place…this could at the very least, be entertaining to watch, as it all falls down. lol
capejasmine on September 28, 2009 at 5:38 PM
I don’t recall saying that. But on balance, I would say “sure”. If a weakling like Carter had been reduced to begging in 1979, don’t you think we still benefited on balance in the end from hosting the 1984 summer games?
You people need to quit seeing every little freaking thing through a partisan political filter. Like I said, yeah… embarrassing that Obama has to act like a trained monkey to get the games, but who cares. It’s freakin’ Obama, he’s going to be remembered as a lightweight pushover anyway.
DaveS on September 28, 2009 at 5:40 PM
Like I said, I think the FIFA World Cup in 2018 would be a much bigger benefit to the country. It’s distributed all over the country, and it’s a bigger event.

There is no way they are going to have London host the games in 2012 and then give it to another English speaking country in 2016, even with all the bribes given to the Olympic Evaluation Commission. Most likely they want Obama there just for the drama and will end of picking Rio.
Gabe on September 28, 2009 at 5:42 PM
Still, the dummies are the taxpayers, national and local, who’ll foot the bills, including fot the Olympics’ deficit and corruption.

Just what an already suffering city needs… debt they can’t pay off for thirty years, and large swathes of land torn down and turned into buildings that will forever be a ghost town afterward the event.
How many low income housing is going to be demolished for this?
Enoxo on September 28, 2009 at 5:44 PM
That’s having it backward. The question is why the heck do we want the games again? America doesn’t need the quote-unquote “honor” of hosting the games to make us feel good about ourselves. How many people who isn’t a Chicago-pol or Obama cultist really care? If we want to host the games again, at least have it in a nice city like San Francisco. I’m sorry man, I would much rather visit Rio de Janeiro than the stink hole that’s Chicago.

The only thing that makes this whole story even remotely amusing is the thought that there is a good possibility that it will be President Palin opening the games in Chicago in 2016 and that the prospect of that happening will drive the left and their flunkies in the media completely insane.
Hellrider on September 28, 2009 at 5:45 PM
Agreed. But Chicago is the US host city in contention. It’s not about “making us feel good about ourselves”. It’s about reminding the world of our bada$$ness.

I wonder where in Chicago they are going to put the Olympics at. Chicago is a nightmare to drive through and around. Both airports are in very bad areas. Can’t they move it out to the burbs.
I wish Zero would get down to work of leading this country out of the mess we are in and quit worrying about trapsing all over the world.

If the games are going to cost more money than they bring in than I am against them.
Since the Chicago Machine is going to be in control of the purse strings, and the Thug-in-chief is going out of his way to help it along, I think we can fairly asses that:
1.The Daley bunch is foaming at the mouth to get their hands on the Olympics money.
2.Political posturing and donations for building contracts will be rampant.
3.The cost over runs are GUARANTEED. Who will pick up the slack? The federal government (The citizen)

On a side note, I read this really interesting book, The Devil in the White City:
The people who built the White City, came up with all sorts of innovations and inventions and novel architectural and engineering ideas…meanwhile one of America’s most infamous serial killers, HH Holmes used the influx of people to the city to mask his killing spree.
There is no way people could replicate that city today, there would be too many taxes, unions, environmental impact studies, permits, consultants etc.
BTW, this was the first time anyone saw a Ferris wheel, and it absolutely gigantic. It was meant to rival the Eifel Tower.
Now…back to our regularly scheduled program…..

The Olympics show that? I don’t think so.
I think we already show that since a good portion of the atheletes competing for other countries all train in the US, go to US colleges, all use state of the art equipment made in the US, etc…
Face it, the Olpympics has lost it’s spirit. Now it’s just who can create the best athlete in a lab some where.

There’s a difference between being ‘right’ and being good–and capable, and competent, and honest, and mature.
I think the Clinton Machine was a mostly-dead horse ridden by a mentally ill woman, so I’m not impressed with Obama barely defeating it; the McCain campaign speaks for itself ( and I’m not impressed there, either )
Obama is a ruthless, clever little +hit who is the willing tool of people and groups who are even more ruthless and clever than he is. Should we congratulate him for that–or be impressed?
The worst part of your message is your sympathy for him.

Okay well I have lived in Chicago and suburbs my whole life. I’ve been mugged, seen a woman shot in a driveby about 20 feet from me, had a brick thrown through the window of our apartment. No, he is not a diplomat. He is the President of the United States and so far as I know, no other president has pranced all over the planet drumming up the Olympics or anything of the kind for his home city and the cronies back home. It is beneath the dignity of his office. As if there was any dignity with this guy.

Terrye on September 28, 2009 at 6:02 PM
Dude. The Chief Executive of the United States has as much business dealing with some bid for the Olympics as he has going on some moronic late-night talk show.
The US doesn’t need to be “sold” to anyone, and certainly not by the moron who has spent most of his time in office running around the world telling everyone how terrible our country was until he got into office. American cities that want to vie for the Olympics are on their own to go for it. The US is not in the business of getting the Olympics. This is NOT a job for a President, though it seems almost appropriate for a Precedent – I’ll give you that.
For some reason, you seem to think that our nation should run just like other nations, where the government runs everything and everyone looks to the government for all issues. How quickly we have fallen. Not just because of the idiot in the White House and the lunatic Washington junta, but because too many Americans have already forgotten what America is. Sad.
We are not a nation that needs our government to “sell” us to anyone. We are a collection of States and individuals who do our own things and make our own ways in the world. The US, as a national entity, has no business mucking around in a bid to get the Olympics.

CWforFreedom on September 28, 2009 at 6:03 PM
Key point in bold. It’s beneath the dignity of the office, but not Obama. It hurts nothing for him to do it.
And yes, the president is our chief diplomat. He is also our chief law enforcement office, and commander-in-chief of the military. He is our chief executive, and actually runs the state department.
You should know these things.

Maybe someone pointed this out already, but why not just hold the Olympics in Athens, where it began, every four years? They just built that new Olympic Park for the ’04 games. Just keep using it. Every country pays to support and upkeep it and be done w/it! Why keep practically bankrupting every city that holds the damn games?
JAM on September 28, 2009 at 6:07 PM
Meh…
Not counting on Chicago having the Olympics until it is announced.
1)Obama just insulted Poland etc with pulling out of the missile defense agreement on the anniversary of WWII invasion of said country
2)He insulted the Brits numerous times
3)On his trip to Turkey didn’t he force the guy taking over Nato to apologize? and he reneged on asking Turkey to apologize for wartime atrocities, at the same time trying to force Western Europe to take Turkey into the EU?
They just might want him there in order to deliver a lesson in humility and hand 2016 to Madrid, Tokyo or Rio. The O is not as loved as he was on Jan 19.

I highlighted “CIC” for a reason. Ozero has met with ONCE.. ONE TIME.. ONCE. Sarah Palin as gov visited her NG troops a lot more than that. ONCE. People are on the receiving end of live fire and he met with the commander ONCE.
BUT the jugeared friend of Alinsky and Bomber Ayers had plenty of time to meet with the Olympic Committee. Mr. Styrofoam pillars probably thinks he’s Zeus or something. Next thing you know he’ll be trying to issue his next kid directly from his little head just to prove his godliness

Schadenfreude on September 28, 2009 at 6:21 PM
No, it’ll just create the impression that America is a commercialized hell-hole, ’cause we have to run the event at a profit. Unlike countries that have never hosted the games before, people here don’t want their tax dollars spent on this stupid bullshit. Without massive subsidies, our effort is gonna suck compared to other cities (to Beijing in particular). It is going to be a national embarrassment.
year_of_the_dingo on September 28, 2009 at 6:21 PM
Believe it or not, if Chicago got it, I’d say Americans should boycott it. No disrespect to the athletes, but it’s the city and it’s corrupted officials who have stained this city and the state of Illinois. Don’t get me wrong, there are many good citizens of Chicago who are mad as hell about how their city has been diminished in the name of Progressive liberalism, but Chicago still does not deserve the Olympics.
pjean on September 28, 2009 at 6:23 PM
I never said it was. I just said that it is neither the job of the federal government, nor the traditional role of it. We are a nation without a national airline. We used to be a nation without a national auto manufacturer (until this moronic marxist took power). We do not run sovereign wealth funds for “the nation”. We are different from just about all other nations in that our federal government has never mucked around in these areas. To have the federal government actively lobbying for the Olympics is not a usurpation of states’ rights, but a turn away from the traditions of our nation – and a stupid one, at that.
It’s not extraordinary, it’s just pathetic and un-American. It’s something that Indonesia would do, not the US.
But, as Terrye started into, The Precedent looks at destroying any dignity of the office as a plus. That is his goal in this more than anything. He wants to make a mockery out of the office, just as he is trying to make a mockery out of everything our nation holds dear.

Don’t worry, Dave. The Precedent has announced that he’s going to open United States Airline – a federally owned and operated carrier to “provide competition” to the private airlines. United States Airlines will likely get the major Olympic routes (just to strengthen the competition offered by this “public option”) and will put the US more in line with the other countries of the world that run national airlines, too. Don’t you want to be just like everyone else?
That is the equivalent of a bid by United States government, and personally by The Precedent, to get the Olympics. It’s ridiculous.

Hey this is gold for Dear Leader- if he wins in 2012 he can play Nero when he opens “his” games.
If he loses in 2012 he can get waist-deep in that sweet Chicago Olympics graft.

Not just you mama. I pointed this out a couple days ago.
For me it’s only the freecanadacreditreports.ca flash ad that causes it. Does the same thing on other sites as well; on every computer I’ve tried.
Try hitting the ‘stop loading this page’ button before the sidebar ads have time to load.

mjk, I toally agree with you. Olympics are nothing ut a monumental waste of money. I visited Vancouver recently, as you probably know they are the host of the next winter Olympics. Well, its citizenry is angry, the townhall is bankrupt and so it the city for the a while to come because of the expenses associated with this Olympics. And exactly like in Chicago, local people don’t want it there. It’s all a circus, and usually the organizers/host towns take 20 years or more to pay off the debt. I was reading somehwere recently that Montreal just finished the debt they incurred from organizing the 1976 Olympics…can you imagien how long it will take Chicago?? Chicago is bankrupt as it is, they don’t forget that back in 1976 when the Montreal Olympics were held there wasn’t any recession, or anyways nothing of proportions of this one that we had/have…so, bottom line: Olympics is synonimous with waste of money…let the third world countries organizing them, or countries like China and other ‘willing’ kooks, they’ll struggle with the debt for the next centuries….

“I can no more disavow Valerie Jarrett’s pay to play than the Daley machine.” Chicago!

I can see it now, that funky logo of his that gets reformed and reused for everything somehow converted into a new logo for the Chicago Olympics. Shudder!!!!

I needed a laugh. It’s not funny but I still laughed. The visual is vomit inducing.

If America had an armpit and arpits had “A-holes”, Chicago would be the A-hole of America’s armpit.
We are broke, we shouldn’t be shelling out tons of dough so a few people can play some games. Seriously, I’m really happy you can run wicked fast, but honestly the Olympics jumped the shark a long time ago, guys only watch it to see the cute chicks in the gym leotards and skimpy skate suits.
Get sponsorships and have them pay for it all, thankyou.

I became obsessed with the Chicago world’s Fair after reading Devil in The White City. There is a dvd available on Netflix about The 1893 World Columbian Exhibition narrated by Gene Wilder. You cannot imagine the scope of that fair. When you see all the pix and the exhibits, and buildings constructed in 18 months, out of the swamp that was Jackson Park – it is jaw dropping. But, this was done in a time before before capitalism was severely crushed by the unions. The Olympics are slated to go at the other end of the “Midway Plaisance” in Washing Park. I cannot even imagine the cost over-runs due to the greedy politicians and unions of Chicago. Think of it, Chicago is the city that turned Kristol from a die hard socialist to a capitalist, upon arriving here and witnessing the corruption.

Obama was pretty clear that he had more important things to worry about than ACORN’s vast corruption.
Afghanistan, Iran, GITMO, Honduras, NEA call, soaring unemployment, disasterous economy, terrorist cells in New York, citizen moral…Shame on me for not immediately recognizing that the top priority to be handled was scoring the Olympics.
