Did the Olympics Committee force Obama to go to Copenhagen?

posted at 4:15 pm on September 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

Geraghty’s spot on. There’s no way The One would risk his political capital on a personal appeal in Denmark unless he’d been assured that Chicago will get the games if he makes a cameo. It’s a done deal; the only question is who approached whom. I think the IOC probably forced his hand: Given the terrible optics of the trip plus the fact that, as Geraghty reminds us, Obama said as recently as two weeks ago that he wouldn’t go himself, he had every incentive to avoid this — unless the IOC sweetened the pot by promising him the games if he showed up. Once they did that, he had no choice. Imagine the public’s reaction if he stayed home and the games were awarded to another country, and then someone at the IOC leaked the fact that he’d been told that Chicago would have been the pick if he’d taken a day out of his schedule for a little gladhanding in Denmark. Everyone who’s dumping on him right now for going would be dumping on him then for not going, and he surely knows it. I can just picture the angry blog posts estimating the number of jobs and total revenue lost to Chicago because its favorite son wouldn’t get on a plane. The IOC made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Well played, chumps!

Via Breitbart, here’s Gibbs doing his best to explain the reason for the trip without explaining the real reason for the trip. Smart exit question from smart lefty Michael Roston: Given the metaphysical certainty that there’ll be massive corruption involved in Chicago’s handling of the games and the equal certainty that righty blogs like this one will rub The One’s face in it, how bright was it of him to get involved in this in the first place?

How did we end up in this position of never being told the truth? Every Government press conference or release. Every speech. All are bald face lies. We know it and they know we know it. It’s some sick kabuki.

ronsfi on September 28, 2009 at 4:41 PM

Maybe it is part of his coronation which we will all call the Celebration of Celebrations to end all Celebrations. Think of it, fake Greek columns and children singing (wait, this sounds familiar). The 7 rings in the Olympic would just have another added to commemorate his 8th year in office. Maybe he’ll win the gold in Golf and Date-Nighting. Remember, all must sing this as he leaves Chi-town (the center of the known universe).

For some reason, you still seem to have some idea that The Precedent has a brain in his head. He doesn’t.

I wonder how many tourists will get murdered in the Windy City during the Olympics. I can not imagine Chicago pulling this off without a huge disaster or a lot of federal money.

Dusty on September 28, 2009 at 4:44 PM

I wonder if others share my feelings. I genuinely don’t want the games in the US again so soon. It kills the magic. The Atlanta games were completely forgettable. The only thing I remember were the pipe-bombs. And it’s going to be only eight years after Beijing. There’s no way we can top the Chinese since, for us, the games will be a commercial enterprise and not a national-pride-restoration-orgasmofest. Let Brazil have it. The whole point of the Olympics that it is an occasion for humanity to safely indulge in jingoism. The games are just not quite right without the nationalism-driven grandiose.

Geraghty’s analysis is probably correct. On the other hand, I still remember the moment when they pulled the card out of the envelope and it reads Pologne/Ukraine.

Hmmm, obviously I just look at the pretty pictures. That’s sad.

Well, the old saying “follow the money” and the Olympics is big, big, money. They literally take in billions every two years, and between have the qualifying events that you have to participate in.
Their is hardly a bigger, more influential, arrogant group then the IOC.

Two questions: How much tax money will be spent on the games if we get them? And, why do we want them again?

I don’t think Obama is without guile. I would not call him stupid, but I think this may have more to do with political payback for certain highly placed Illinois Democrats, than it has to do with public opinion.

I just don’t think most Americans really care all that much who gets the Olympics.

Terrye on September 28, 2009 at 4:46 PM

This is not a done deal. The only reason B.O. would have gone was if his One True Master, namely Mayor Richard “Shortshanks” Daley of Chicago, ordered him there.

Being the good little Chicago Democrat Machine Politician that he is, B.O. would be a fool not to listen to what Daley says, since it is Daley who controls the Machine.

I wonder if he’ll have to do more than gladhand. I think he’ll strike a deal where he’ll donate his Greek columns to get the Olympics for Chicago.

He’s accomplished nothing of value for the American people and this is just the same sort of window dressing, dog and pony show he excels at, but it will do nothing to alleviate the problems he’s already saddled this country with.

1) What’s left of the Clinton machine, never had it’s heart in Hillary. It is and always was, Bill’s machine.
It was also Bill’s political instincts that made the machine run. As Hillary has shown time and again, she has very little in the way of political instincts.

2) Barry won, primarily because many people wanted to vote for the first black president. As such they were willing to overlook the evidence against him. Not that the media bent over backwards to make such evidence known.

3) If Barry is such a political genius, why has everything that he has touched since winning office turned to cr@p?

The Olympics are a financial albatross, not to mention the security implications.

What do we need to be spending money on building even more stadiums, etc., that we don’t need, now?

No credit to Obama for this. Bad idea from the very start.

NoDonkey on September 28, 2009 at 4:18 PM

mizflame98 on September 28, 2009 at 4:53 PM

Yes … your logic is compelling. The guy who beat the Clinton machine,

Er … Shrillary beat herself. When she opened her mouth about supporting Spitzer’s licenses for illegals, that was it. But you are correct, the Chicago thug knew how to win caucuses. He never figured out how to win a primary election, though. But … yeah, that primary was proof of The Precedent’s great intellect. I remember that it impressed you.

who rose from Illinois state senate backbencher to the presidency in five years,

Yep. That was odd, wasn’t it? And you think it was because of his massive intellect, huh? All planned out. Having the media supress every bit of bad news. Yep. Brilliant guy. We should have seen such a towering mind coming.

has no sense of political calculation whatsoever.

He made more mistakes in that campaign than you can count. They were papered over by the media and the final nail was the credit crises and McCain’s efforts to assure everyone that the marxist wasn’t a socialist. It was all because of the idiot messiah’s planning. Yep. And we could see how brilliant he was by his string of brilliant, mistake-free actions since he took office.

Take a look at his idiocy with Honduras and then ask yourself why he is getting away with it. Is it because he’s a smart political machine, or because of something else. Maybe you’ll start to realize the truth of the situation. Maybe.

Must be nice to live in a world where your opponents are never, ever right.

Allahpundit on September 28, 2009 at 4:43 PM

Who? The Precedent or you? You’re correct sometimes, but The Precedent has not done a single thing correct, that I can recall. He came close with the pirate situation, but we all know that he flubbed that for a couple of days, which is why the captain wasn’t rescued when he first went overboard.

Maybe you can enlighten me on The Precedent’s greatest hits – actions, thoughts, or policies he’s championed since coming into office that are correct. I can’t think of a one.

mizflame98 on September 28, 2009 at 4:55 PM

TheAdmiral on September 28, 2009 at 4:56 PM

Who has the money for that these days, now that the Obama “administration” is on a jihad against evil profits and who has the money to travel to Chicago to watch the main events, much less the lessor events?

Good point. I can see federal dollars being sucked into Chicago by the tens of billions.

Screw the Olympics. The only winners will be the unions who get the construction contracts and NBC (do they have a lifetime contract, heh)

More important to me, right now we’ve got Marines and soldiers in Afghanistan wondering what the hell is going on over here.

Their commanding general has been given but one audience with their CINC in 70 days. Not weekly, not daily, just one lousy meet.

They’ve got a CINC who would like to vote “present” on their mission when they don’t have that luxury.

In the meantime, they see their CINC at the UN doing the unspeakable, they see him on date nights in New York but not at the 9/11 service, they see their country being destroyed.

And him on a plane to Denmark to talk about games.

As much as I would love to have seen the Olympics in my hometown of Chicago in 2016, I am not in the habit of submitting the office of the Presidency to extortion. We hope that future IOC decisions will be made based upon which host city is best suited for that particular Olympics instead of based upon which leaders can be extorted. His corporate cronies came in handy…the same ones that he “consulted” with for the next couple of decades, and some were even “lucky” enough to participate and make a few million on the big dig, well, maybe more then a few million.

Given the metaphysical certainty that there’ll be massive corruption involved in Chicago’s handling of the games and the equal certainty that righty blogs like this one will rub The One’s face in it, how bright was it of him to get involved in this in the first place?

Allah, that’s irrelevant. The Olympics aren’t until 2016. By the time the corruption rears its ugly head, Obama will either have won reelection in 2012 in which case he’s a lame duck and can’t be hurt politically by the inevitable scandals, or he will have lost in 2012 and be a private citizen unfazed by the scandals.

radjah shelduck on September 28, 2009 at 5:19 PM

Why are you all acting like we don’t want the Olympics in the US?

If our president was pushed around and forced to grovel, yeah… that’s embarrassing. But it’s arguably more embarrassing to hear people on the right actually making convoluted arguments that the US shouldn’t have the games here. WTF, people?

DaveS on September 28, 2009 at 5:19 PM

Imagine the public’s reaction if he stayed home and the games were awarded to another country, and then someone at the IOC leaked the fact that he’d been told that Chicago would have been the pick if he’d taken a day out of his schedule for a little gladhanding in Denmark.

If he had taken the day and the cost of flying two 747s and several other jets across the Atlantic.

Dang those Danes. He was probably planning to study up on world problems that day. Now, if he fails to stop a nuclear war in a week or two, we can thank the IOC.

Must be nice to live in a world where your opponents are never, ever right.

Or where they’re always just “crazy” and “nutty” and “apocalyptic”. Makes it easy.

Nothing like college football.

NoDonkey on September 28, 2009 at 4:51 PM

Take the most awesome college game…Oklahoma/Texas, or USC/Notre Dame, etc. and multiply it by 10, and you get just an inkling of what an Olympic event is like.
Even a badminton game is more intense…their is nothing comparable…however, I have never been to a World Soccer Cup, that I hear is off the charts.

I am not saying they should not be here, I am just saying most Americans do not give a damn. They have other concerns and whether or not Chicago gets the Olympics is just not real high on most people’s list of things to care about.

Terrye on September 28, 2009 at 5:28 PM

Too busy with Afganistan to bother to follow the APORN story, too busy with the Olympics to follow up on Afganistan.

mmm mmm mmm
Barking Insane Obama!

starboardhelm on September 28, 2009 at 5:30 PM

And… this is Chicago we are talking about. There were about 500 murders there last year. The security and the traffic will be a nightmare.

Terrye on September 28, 2009 at 5:30 PM

Its a bit surreal isn’t it? One of the most corrupt Presidents in US history getting involved on behalf of one of the most corrupt cites and states in the United States, in an effort to corrupt the outcome of the selection processes of the host city of one international sports most notoriously corrupt events being made by one of the most corrupt international body’s around. I mean Obama’s trip to Copenhagen should be billed as the World Cup of Political Corruption.

So it’s a good idea to have leaders of free world go begging to the IOC to get the games hosted in their country?

lorien1973 on September 28, 2009 at 5:31 PM

They’re adding a special event if Chicago gets the Olympics: The Avoid a Mugging Obstacle Course.

kingsjester on September 28, 2009 at 5:32 PM

So he has time to fly over there to ensure Chicago gets to revel in more government dollars and commit fraud on a massive scale with the Olympics, yet he doesn’t have time to review Gen McChrystal’s request for more troops so that we can win a war… Priorities.
