Did the Olympics Committee force Obama to go to Copenhagen?

posted at 4:15 pm on September 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

Geraghty’s spot on. There’s no way The One would risk his political capital on a personal appeal in Denmark unless he’d been assured that Chicago will get the games if he makes a cameo. It’s a done deal; the only question is who approached whom. I think the IOC probably forced his hand: Given the terrible optics of the trip plus the fact that, as Geraghty reminds us, Obama said as recently as two weeks ago that he wouldn’t go himself, he had every incentive to avoid this — unless the IOC sweetened the pot by promising him the games if he showed up. Once they did that, he had no choice. Imagine the public’s reaction if he stayed home and the games were awarded to another country, and then someone at the IOC leaked the fact that he’d been told that Chicago would have been the pick if he’d taken a day out of his schedule for a little gladhanding in Denmark. Everyone who’s dumping on him right now for going would be dumping on him then for not going, and he surely knows it. I can just picture the angry blog posts estimating the number of jobs and total revenue lost to Chicago because its favorite son wouldn’t get on a plane. The IOC made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Well played, chumps!

Via Breitbart, here’s Gibbs doing his best to explain the reason for the trip without explaining the real reason for the trip. Smart exit question from smart lefty Michael Roston: Given the metaphysical certainty that there’ll be massive corruption involved in Chicago’s handling of the games and the equal certainty that righty blogs like this one will rub The One’s face in it, how bright was it of him to get involved in this in the first place?

Just a thought, Climate Change Conference is going to be held in Copenhagan. I think this is the reason he’s going. Deals behind closed doors. White House said his itinerary is unsure due to the proximity of the Olympic discussions and the CCC. Who are they kidding?

elclynn on September 28, 2009 at 9:21 PM

Anyone see the main headline over at drudge, its a murder video in Chicago… some kid gets nailed by what looks like a 4x4x8ft board …

show this to the IOC…

ted c on September 28, 2009 at 9:21 PM

Allah, check out the Climate Change Conference. Eerily close to the Olympics meetings. Something is definitely fishy. I’m thinking backroom deals and this trip is not what it seems.

elclynn on September 28, 2009 at 9:23 PM

It’s not about “making us feel good about ourselves”. It’s about reminding the world of our bada$$ness

The Olympics show that? I don’t think so.

Oh there was one time, referenced above where it was supposed to show that, but I don’t think either one of those strawman is what the Olympics are supposed to be about.

I could care less. Unless Federal money is going to be used, and of course, you can almost guarantee that.

Well it makes sense. I’m certainly not a fan of teh WON, but what choice did he have. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

On another topic, did you see the video in Chicago of those neanderthols beating up that poor kid. Disgusting. The African American community wonders why everyone has a low opinion of them as a whole, asked and answered. I feel so bad for that poor honor student’s family who did their best to raise their kid right and neanderthols kill him. Send the suburbs the honor students from the hood so they have a fighting chance. Unfortunately the suburbs only get the neanderthols so the urban school’s numbers look better for contract negotiating time for the teachers union. Pathetic.

So, BHO, how’s that AFGHANISTAN decision point coming along?

Oh, you’ll get to it in a few weeks or so…

OK… NOT!!

Khun Joe on September 28, 2009 at 10:16 PM

I’m rooting for Rio… Samba samba samba…

The only guys worse than the Chigaco machine are the IOC… Those folks have a PhD in graft and corruption and would make Mayor Daley jealous… The list of bribes and proposed deals would make a nun blush…

Khun Joe on September 28, 2009 at 10:24 PM

Food for thought… We have a guy in the most powerful position in the world… and an OLYMPIC COMMITTEE can dictate to him??

Gee I’ll bet that leave the NorKor Gargoyle, Achmadinnerjacket and al queada quaking in their boots.

You are correct sir. But they would be monopolizing it whether it’s in Chicago or Rio.

Who are these “Olympic Committee” people?

Bunch of Leftist snots in my book. A preview of the NWO.

Dr. ZhivBlago on September 29, 2009 at 3:21 AM

Boondoggle to end all if Chicago gets it. Worse will be that the MSM will be crowing about it now til doomsday. Whether Prez Three-Card-Monte is reelected or not.

Hell, the IOC is one of the most disgustingly corrupt organizations on earth, which is saying a lot.

I wonder what Bambi’s cut is?

I have to believe that NBCs revenue jumps more than a little if the event is here as opposed to Rio. There may be host sites that can turn on as many or even more TVs — though I doubt it — but one of the biggest problems they face is people here tuning out because the results are already known.

Chicago pulls all those sets into play.

EconomicNeocon on September 29, 2009 at 3:12 PM

Let me be the first to predict that Rio will get the 2016 Olympic Games.

Based on the European view of Obama, they will give it to Rio. Obama seems to go out of his way to piss off Gordon Brown and, more importantly, Nicolas Sarkozy with his childish stunts at the UN, etc. This is without even mentioning the Poles, and the Czechs. Saying “No” to a US President will give them special joy.

I am sure it was far more important to do this than to talk to his commanders in Afganistan, meet with financial advisors to fix the mess, get people back to work and companies producing goods, being tough on Iran…….. but no this dude runs.. he will continue to run from important issues and continue to vote present……. but not accountable. Now the French and British have acknowledged he has made the west weak. How embarrasing for our country. He needs to be out of office.

workingforpigs on September 29, 2009 at 11:16 PM

There’s no way The One would risk his political capital …

Uhm … excuse me?

We’re talking about the same guy right? The guy who had a chance to become the next FDR by passing health care but decided to FIRST expend his political capital on a Nancy Pelosi authored pork spending plan to reward Democratic contributors?

Same guy who allowed what little of his political credibility he had left to be eaten up by Pelosi in whipping the Democrats in the house to pass cap and trade?

The same guy who, while tanking in the polls, keeps bringing up the idea of prosecuting CIA agents who have fought and are fighting for this country and are generally regarded as HERO’s by the population at large?

Are we talking about the same guy who held a press conference to save ObamaCare – but instead killed his whole message when he used to the occasion instead to insult the Cambridge Police Department for acting “stupidly”???

The same guy that picked gaff-a-thon Joe Biden for his running mate and bouncin’ Bob Gibbs for press secretary?

The same guy that picked Van Jones for “Green Czar”??

Are we talking about the same guy here?

Allah – you give this guy too much credit. He’s lost politically on the national scene. He’s a winner in Chicago – but no where else.

From what I see – he has no political skills.
