Video: Favre does it again

posted at 7:00 pm on September 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Brett Favre took a lot of criticism for wanting to play another year in the NFL. The Minnesota Vikings took a lot of criticism for giving him the chance, although with the choice between Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson, it’s hard to see why. It’s even harder after this amazing pass with two seconds left that won the game for the Vikings over the surprising San Francisco 49ers:

Another one for the ages.

He’ll choke in, or before, the playoffs.

He always does. Always.

Keljeck on September 27, 2009 at 7:04 PM

Wouldn’t it be cool to be able to earn your paycheck and regain your reputation with one play? Congrats Brett!

Griz on September 27, 2009 at 7:04 PM

No vid of Megan Fox falling flat on her face (metaphorically) on SNL? Heh. Football rules! Detroit won today…19-game losing streak is OVAH!

SouthernGent on September 27, 2009 at 7:05 PM

Plus he threw a downfield block a few plays earlier…
All right.
Glad to see there’s no age discrimination on the field.

Amendment X on September 27, 2009 at 7:05 PM

Don’t get to see all the games :-(

But the Yankees won and now have home field advantage throughout October (& November).

Ugh to November baseball.

rbj on September 27, 2009 at 7:05 PM

Whoa…what a game in Cincinnati!

There are rumors of plagues of locusts here in Toledo now. I’ll start worrying when it rains frogs.

Ohhhhhh sh!t!!!!!!!

blatantblue on September 27, 2009 at 7:08 PM

Awesome! I’m glad he’s playing again. He clearly loves the game, and he’s such a clutch player, even now in his “declining” years.

warrenmr on September 27, 2009 at 7:08 PM

If I could, here is the highlights of the game, with the local announcer for the ’9-er’s and Paul Allen (PA) for the Vikes. Listen to PA on the last play; not sure if he’ll recover or not!

All in all, a great finish by my Vikes.

Wow!

Nice job Favre. Vikes and Red McCombs (if he still owns that team) are happy with their choice tonight

Didn’t Favre’s arm turn in to a wet noodle at about the three quarter mark in last season with the Jets? And he’ll be better this year right? He’s getting better with age right?

Somebody que up Marcellus Wallace’s advice to Butch about unrealistic mother f*&#ers.

That finish was so Favre. Wonderful!

WannabeAnglican on September 27, 2009 at 7:28 PM

We were watching this game when I said oh well I guess they’re going to lose. My daughter said there were 40 seconds left and they could still win. I knew that was true but was skeptical. I’m glad I was wrong.

Rose on September 27, 2009 at 7:29 PM

I, for one, am so happy Favre went to the Vikes, quite effectively shooting the finger across the lakes to the Pack organization.

He is, at once, a great player still… and a damn fine rebel, with a cause.

burnitup on September 27, 2009 at 7:24 PM

Yeah but this year he has a little something called Adrian Peterson

gophergirl on September 27, 2009 at 7:29 PM

Big wup. He has always had the 49ers number.

csdeven on September 27, 2009 at 7:31 PM

Lucky. He’ll barely be able to throw the ball by mid-November.

Meanwhile, the Giants quietly gave up 86 yards today. And the bulk of that was in garbage time.

JammieWearingFool on September 27, 2009 at 7:32 PM

And, int the meantime, the Bengals matched that against the Steelers. Second week straight for the Steelers; my condolences, Ed.

michaelo on September 27, 2009 at 7:35 PM

It hasn’t been easy getting used to the idea that I’m supposed to like him now. That pass helped a lot!

Go Vikings!

calabrese on September 27, 2009 at 7:36 PM

Isn’t he fun to watch. He truly loves the game.

To “burnitup” – Brett had an injury to his arm last year and the coaches never put him on the injured list and were recently fined by the league for not doing so.

Go Brett.

kaye on September 27, 2009 at 7:37 PM

I am a lifelong Packer fan and I loved watching Brett ,But he had to go to viqueens to spite the Pack and Wi. Do not piss on my leg and tell me it is raining. It would be right, if he breaks his leg and ,ends his career in Green Bay. GO PACK GO

Maytag on September 27, 2009 at 7:38 PM

Favre doesn’t say die. I wish he would give Jason Campbell some advice.

my die-hard Skins family is in shock. we ate tons of ham biscuits but that didn’t help. the pack of Oreos didn’t put a dent in our depression.

michael vick won which makes me want to throw up.

kelley in virginia on September 27, 2009 at 7:41 PM

Congrats to Favre. I watched this game, the end was incredible, though I was cheering half-heartedly for SanFran.

I’m glad he came back, he’s still got the goods.

Spirit of 1776 on September 27, 2009 at 7:41 PM

You just had to post this didn’t ya Ed. As a lifelong 49er faithful, this was a hard one to take. And yes, Farve does seem to have our number. Congrats to Viking fans even tho you should be the one’s crying in your beer. Maybe we’ll be back in the playoffs and see ya again. The Rams and the Halks don’t seem to have it this year and it’s a long season.

Rovin on September 27, 2009 at 7:42 PM

I put Bret in the same league as my all time NFL hero…Yard Arm Tittle…

jerrytbg on September 27, 2009 at 7:42 PM

Maytag

Yep, I hope his career ends the way Joe Theismann’s did. By the way, Aaron Rodgers is doing an excellent job. Ted Thompson was right to commit to Rodgers and not mortgage the future by stroking Brett’s huge ego. Now if we can just get the offensive line to block…

packsoldier on September 27, 2009 at 7:43 PM

As a Detroit Lions subservient fan, I have always admired Favre. Green Bay management screwed him, but he didn’t help himself either.

I digress though ’cause I watched the second half of the game and watched the final drive and said to myself, they may win this. He played it well and was just running out of time.

He threw not a desparate pass, but an accurate one.

He pulled this one out of his veteran ass and I for one was proud of him.

Scoreboard44 on September 27, 2009 at 7:43 PM

and ha ha: it never occurred to anyone in the League that the Lions fans would have forgotten what to do in the event of a win.

they were all standing around. they didn’t know they had to go home before they came back next week!

(and no, the joke isn’t helping my Redskins depression).

I was in a bar watching the Packer game, and the Viking game was up on a couple of other TVs. Even though most of the bar was rooting against the Vikings, when Favre threw that pass the whole place involuntarily erupted in cheering.

BadgerHawk on September 27, 2009 at 8:05 PM

michael vick won which makes me want to throw up.

No, the Eagles as a team won and most of the credit goes to Kolb with 327 yards in passing and two touchdowns.

As for the Favre pass, ESPN top 10 play reel and deservedly so.

JetBoy on September 27, 2009 at 8:08 PM

What they don’t show is the previous Niner possession where they played premature PREVENT OFFENSE and ran 3 times to run out the clock despite the Vikings having 3 timeouts and 2 minutes to come back.

STUPID strategy.

ALWAYS play to win, not to not lose.

Today’s HotAir lesson of the day which can be used in our push in 2010.

Never run out the clock, beat your opponent down and keep beating after the bell. Never even give them a brake.

(yes, I’m a very pissed off Niner fan)

jbh45 on September 27, 2009 at 8:20 PM

With all due respect to Favre, it looked like the receiver “did it.” Stupendous catch and then getting his feet down. Favre bought time to allow the play to develop, but the hard work was at the other end of the throw.

Favre: 50 yards ON A STRING into the back of the end zone… Only 3 or 4 other QBs in the NFL can make that throw… Superb catch… That’s why the Vikings signed him!

FYI, I’m in DC and THE TOWN IS ON SUICIDE WATCH BECAUSE DETROIT WON… Can’t wait for the radio talk shows in the morning on the way home… They already want Zorn’s head on a platter…

jerrytbg on September 27, 2009 at 8:23 PM

I agree. The TV announcers gave the credit to Favre. But the pictures told the story. The Vikes teammates were out celebrating with the receiver. Once again, the media is pushing “the story,” rather than what is really happening. :-)

Mallard T. Drake on September 27, 2009 at 8:30 PM

As a Packer fan, and a Favre fan, I hope he does well. Minnesota is the perfect fit for the old man, as he can’t play in the cold worth a shit. This years schedule has one potentially tough weather game for the Vikes, and it ain’t against the Packers.

Now, as for Brett wanting to be in Minnesota just for vengence on GB, I was hoping to see more from the Packers D, not to end his career or anything, but certainly to make him rethink his decision.

Badgerhawk, I have that shirt, and most of my co-workers didn’t get it. Only one person even recognised that the name was spelled wrong, and nobody got the humor. I think it’s hilarious anyways.

OneEyedJack on September 27, 2009 at 8:31 PM

As a die hard Packer fan it seems so un-natural for Favre to be making Viking fans happy! lol I’d like to see the replay too as it looked like he was out at normal speed. Anyway, it sets up a huge game next week on Monday night between the Pack and the Vikes. So the VikQueens are 3 and 0, but I’m not worried though because Favre will lose games stupidly just as he wins some brilliantly.

CrusaderPatriot on September 27, 2009 at 8:35 PM

Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable.

Oh, and BTW… Yankees… AL East Champions!!

JohnGalt23 on September 27, 2009 at 8:35 PM

Favre can just go away. He’ll destroy that team as he’s done so many others including the Jets last year with his selfish act. Just wait and see how Peterson enjoys being a 2nd or 3rd option on that team compared to Favre’s shining light. Minny will not go anywhere in the NFC with him at the helm.

Oh, and I’m sorry, but what was Singletary thinking playing prevent defense at the end of the game. He was a monster player who wouldn’t back off. It disgusts me that he didn’t have his own team playing the same way. This was a game the 49ers should not have lost. Horrible.

kelley in virginia on September 27, 2009 at 8:48 PM

There are really people who still admire Favre? After quitting on the team and the fans who gave him everything, then childishly demanding to come back (after saying for months that he wasn’t going to), then demanding that the Pack trades him to their most bitter rivals? Really, there are people who will actually cheer for that jackass?

Favre is no hero. He’s a selfish jerk who’s only in it for himself. He will destroy Childress as a head coach and destroy any chance for the Queens to win a Superbowl for years to come (which in the end will please me greatly). Anyone who expects miracles from Brent, especially in Dec-Jan, are deluding themselves. Or doesn’t anyone remember the wounded duck in overtime of the ’07 NFC Championship?

Badger in KC on September 27, 2009 at 8:51 PM

Still amazing after all these years.

cubachi on September 27, 2009 at 9:05 PM

Yes the receiver deserves equal credit for the catch, but that throw was 50 yds in the air on a rope. What is lost in this is the fact that Favre led the team 80 yards with about a minute left and no time-outs.
