Video: Favre does it again
posted at 7:00 pm on September 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Brett Favre took a lot of criticism for wanting to play another year in the NFL. The Minnesota Vikings took a lot of criticism for giving him the chance, although with the choice between Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson, it’s hard to see why. It’s even harder after this amazing pass with two seconds left that won the game for the Vikings over the surprising San Francisco 49ers:
Another one for the ages.

The Jets are the Packers’ most bitter rivals?
Jaibones on September 27, 2009 at 9:07 PM
As a Packers fan, this is painful to watch. But don’t worry, Vikings fans. I hope you get the full Favre experience, complete with game-ending interception in the playoffs (or before).
NebCon on September 27, 2009 at 9:09 PM
hey, the packers wouldn’t take him as #1 QB (which is probably the best decision), so Favre moved on. what is wrong with that?
how can yall whine when the REdskins have jason campbell. he just stands there & has no idea why nothing is happening.

According to Badger…that doesn’t count…
AND…he’ll screw up toward the end of the season…or sooner…
jerrytbg on September 27, 2009 at 9:13 PM
No, but if you remember, he wanted to go to the Queens last year, which is why they put in a clause in the trade papers to the Jets that said that if the Jets traded Brent to the Vikings, it was going to be something on the order of 3 first round picks.
Badger in KC on September 27, 2009 at 9:15 PM
I get so sick of everyone bitching about Favre. As a Packer fan and season ticket holder, he is old and all the hype each season is not him, it is all the ESPN and experts who make this into a big thing. Let the guy be, he wanted to come back, they wanted him to not start. He chose to do something else, like everyone else in a job would do, especially if you were still in demand and could start and make a difference anywhere else. Get over it. Until he hurt himself in NY, he was awesome. The guy is a machine and noone can say otherwise.
I love the Pack and Favre. He throws interceptions, but on the flip side he wins games like this. That is who he is. Get over it.
momof2 on September 27, 2009 at 9:16 PM
From a Niners fan, I was watching this with my son (also a Niners fan) and we speculated he would pull this out right up until they gave it over to the Niners with about 1:40 left..
*sigh*
Oh well, the game, gentlemen, is sixty minutes long.
If there is any upside to this (for me), Greta Van Sustern must be going into paroxysms of joy and I wanna keep her happy so she can continue searing Obama and his coterie of creeps on her show.
VoyskaPVO on September 27, 2009 at 9:20 PM
Farve gave credit where credit is due:
“I didn’t know who it was that was streaking so I just threw it as hard as I could,” Favre said. “I don’t think it was anything that special. The catch was pretty outstanding.”
takeamericabackin10 on September 27, 2009 at 9:20 PM
Ed: I watched and I loved it. We are from Minn-e-ho-ta but live in Alabama. I love sports!!! This was great. Favre (why does he spell it wrong????) was having a ball. Wait til next Monday night. NOTHING could get me away from the Monday Night Football Game. Green Bay v. Vikes. War…..
suzyk on September 27, 2009 at 9:23 PM
Aaron Rodgers maybe good for fantasay football but Favre is a winner and GB made a mistake letting Favre go. When his arm is healthy Brett is still one of the best QBs in the league.
lavell12 on September 27, 2009 at 9:26 PM
I can’t describe in words how excited I am to actually get to go to the Vikings/Packers MNF game next week! Let’s hope it is half as incredible as this game!

BTW, I watched the catch in HD, and it was quite clear he had both feet inbounds. The gentleman who said otherwise needs a better TV or an eye examination.

Maybe they can make it to the Super Bowl for a fifth try (that would be a record wouldn’t it)?
And he’s right………..great catch!!!!
PappyD61 on September 27, 2009 at 9:59 PM
Long-time 49ers fans here, and they didn’t do themselves any favors in their last possession. Everybody in football-land knew that they needed to move the sticks to seal that one (except for their OC)…and three straight running plays with their back up RB. That one’s on the coaching/play-calling.
What I found interesting was there was one camera angle that showed the winning touchdown catch, and the front half of the receiver’s left foot on the endline, which makes it an incomplete pass. But, that angle was only shown once during the network replays, all other replays were from a different vantage point which just showed the left foot touching down, and the right foot being dragged in the endzone. But the refs weren’t about to overturn that call for Brett Favre’s home opener. The NFL kisses Favre’s butt just like the MSM kisses Obama’s.
Left Coast Right Mind on September 27, 2009 at 10:07 PM
It’s about time the Vikes have a QB that can pull this off. Kudos to Greg Lewis for a great catch! 11-22-09: Vikings v. Seahawks, front row :)

as a lifelong packer fan I have to say go Farve. Ted Thomson wants to be in charge in Green Bay and had been pushing him out the door since he got here.
How an organization that values tradition hired an egostatical jerk like Thompson I will never understand.
Notice the retirement rumors for Farve didn’t start until Thompson was the GM in Green Bay.
Go Brett and pity any other players thrown under the bus.
Also no one talks about Reggie White and how he did the same thing…Its not a knock on Reggie, I respected him totally and if he wanted to play, let him play if not in Green Bay elsewhere.
I personally hope someday when Thompson is gone the story comes out. I think President Obama took lessons from him on how to control the press.
Gracelynn on September 27, 2009 at 11:37 PM
I’m not that big a fan, but the Cowboys look great in the early going, and should return to glory if Tony Romo starts to look better and the defense tightens up a little. Felix Jones is as exciting as someone like Adrian Peterson when he gets the ball. Tomorrow will be 31-12 for Dallas.
The Dean on September 27, 2009 at 11:55 PM
Yep. No love for Ted Thompson here. He done Brett wrong!
Brett Favre makes watching pro football fun – thanks for posting this on HA, Ed! Go Brett!
redwhiteblue on September 28, 2009 at 12:11 AM
Enough of the friggin’ Favre worship. He should have put the Niners away easily. He came six inches away from losing to a team already favored to lose by seven, who lost their star RB on his first rush, who didn’t convert a single third down, and couldn’t stop the pass to save their lives.
And yes, I’m a bitter 49ers fan tired of seeing Favre pull ridiculously lucky victories out of his ass at our expense for two friggin’ decades.
TheMightyMonarch on September 28, 2009 at 12:33 AM
The catch was awesome, the throw was straight, long and catchable. Good for the Vikings. I’m sorry I missed that game (working).
The game that thrilled me was IOWA/PENN. I watched that game! GO HAWKS!

Speaking as a life-long Packers fan, it was a wonderful experience having Favre as our quarterback for 16 years. You just had to take the good with the bad. The bad included many painful interceptions and fumbles. But the good included so many plays where your jaw dropped in amazement, where it didn’t seem possible he could get away from the rushers and still make those impossible throws. He owns all the quarterback records (and longevity records) to assure his spot in the Hall of Fame, but it was his enthusiasm and joy in playing the game which transcended the records.
It’s sad that off the field he finally let his ego get the better of him. The retirement fiasco was entirely Favre’s fault. He could have kept playing for the Packers as long as he liked if he had merely said so, instead of dithering every year and wanting Ted Thompson to beg him to come back. Thompson believed the team was more important than one individual, and refused to be jerked around forever. Plus Thompson knew that he had an excellent young quarterback waiting in the wings, so the transition would not be a disaster.
I wished Favre the best when he went to the Jets. I was very unhappy when Favre, at least partly motivated by a desire for revenge against Thompson, again came out of retirement to play for our arch rivals the Vikings. I’ll of course be rooting against the Vikings next week and hoping we crush them (but I’ll be satisfied with just a narrow victory).
Nonetheless, whatever his motives and however painful it may be for Packers fans, Favre had every right to return to the game he loves, and to play for any team which will have him for as long as he is still capable. Football is a business at least as much as it is a game, and teams cut and trade players all the time. It’s hard to complain when a player turns that around and trades teams.
And even as he approaches 40, Favre at quarterback can still make those kinds of jaw-dropping plays which keeps football from being the same-old thing week after week, and which keeps fans filling stadiums or glued to our big-screen TVs. Today’s game was another such instance. Much as I would have preferred to see the Vikings lose, it was almost worth it to be able to watch the old man pull off yet another miracle.

I loathe Brett Favre and the Vikings. It was a very nice catch but I still hate them both.

As a Packer fan it’s great to see Brett experience as much of the NFL as he can. With any luck the Vikes will make it to the Super Bowl so Brett can experience the “Bud Grant trophy winner” experience, for the Vikes once again LOSING the big one!.
Jeff from WI on September 28, 2009 at 5:46 AM
I have to respectfully disagree with this assertion. Brett himself prior to the 2008 was CONSTANTLY pulling this garbage with the fans for previous 3-4 off seasons. He would get his lackeys at EPSN to “speculate” if he was going to retire that particular off-season and he played the Packers and the fans.
So Ted Thompson, realizing that the previous Head Coach/GM hybrid experiment was a DISASTER (Only 3 players on the roster at the time was through the draft during the Sherman era) and then knowing that his quarterback situation was precarious because his of the retirement talk every off-season and there was no good back-up in case he did retire, Thompson plucked Aaron Rodgers in 2005 in the draft. Considering they got him at the 24th slot when he was hyped as a top 10 pick, they basically stole him.
It was Brett Favre who wanted out because under Sherman, he was basically Lord Favre over the Packers. He got into a snit because we didn’t go out of our way to get his buddies on the team or get the players he wanted. That’s all it was and if anyone watched last season while he was waging a PR war against the true Packers fans with his acolytes, you know he staged one the true Obama-esque stunt by making most media outlets wait for his private plane to land in Green Bay with “waiting fans” to force the Packers to giving him a starting spot, despite the fact retiring and unretiring twice in the off season. Utter poppycock.

Wow! I am up here in Minnesota this week on business, I flew in last night and went to a sports bar in St Paul to have supper and a few drinks. The celebration was still going strong about 9:00 last night. These folks are jacked up man! I can understand why, that was a pretty spectacular ending.
conservnut on September 28, 2009 at 7:09 AM
I don’t understand the big excitement in Minnesota. So you won a game at the end with Favre. It’s Minnesota, where the fans are so crummy it usually took half the stadium in Packer fans just so you guys could get the blackout lifted. It’s still played inside in that crummy stadium, and it’s still a team with a tradition of choking in the big game, and it’s a team who’s “Hall of Fame” is in a downtown St. Paul phone booth.
Jeff from WI on September 28, 2009 at 9:12 AM
I’m a lifelong Bears fan, but an admirer of Favre (no, he doesn’t spell it wrong, we just pronounce it wrong).
Great play by Favre just to get a throw off; outstanding catch by Lewis (local guy from south suburban Chicago). And I despise the Vikings.
I actually hope the (effing) Packers slaughter them.

It’s a long season. I predict the Bears will win the division. How nice of you to root for the Packers for one week. I’ll return the favor when the Bears play the Vikings.
And I agree with Jeff from WI. We Pack fans and Bears fans hate each other’s teams, but there is an underlying respect because of the storied fanchises and many NFL championships.
There’s no respect for the Vikings as a franchise.

Had to look at four different depictions of the story on the Net to find out that the receiver was Greg Lewis! That was a great throw, but an equally great catch — right at the edge of the end zone. Caught it on the outstretched fingers on a dive, but kept both feet in bounds. I agree Farve is to be credited for a great two minute drill and a great pass, but not even mentioning Greg Lewis’s name? Come on.

Yeah, thanks Ed for rubbing salt in my wound with this post. Farve’s last second touchdown cost me a win in my pool ($75) and cost my favorite team!
I knew the 49ers would play them hard, if only they had gotten just one more damn first down to run out the clock and if only that gray haired old man named Farve would just retire already!

Lets see if he can stay healthy. He was doing real good for the Jets until his shoulder went out. The thing is, if he does stay healthy and make it to the big game, it will be a feel good story for Favre only, not the team cause he will retire on top and they will be right back where they started next season.

Good post, that’s the way I see it, too.
As a Packer fan who has lived in both Chicago and the Twin Cities, I tend to agree. It’s hard for me to come up with the right word for this, but the difference is that Bears fans tend to be (a) quite knowledgeable about the game and (b) more loyal. I’ve lived in Minnesota since 1992 and there are a hell of a lot of Minnesotans with 90s-vintage Packers gear in the back of their closets.

Enjoy it while it lasts Viking fans, because as a Packer fan for over 45 years, Brett Favre is the most selfish, conceited, and destructive player I have ever seen wear the gold and green.
He could care less if his interceptions cost you a game, he’s a “gunslinger” and has to do what a guy has to do. Remember, he’s got to maintain his image so he can sell more Wrangler jeans.
Tarkenton was absolutely right on in his comments on this jerk. Too bad the Vikings didn’t listen, they will regret it.
Also, he did the same thing last year with the Jets at the beginning of the season, then went in the tank near the end, tanking the Jets postseason hopes with it in the process.
Tell me how he’s doing in November, before you start crowning him as your “savior.”
By the way, the Packers will win the Monday night game in your house next week. Why? Because Favre, being the selfish blowhard that he is, will try to win the game by himself and throw at least 4 interceptions.
Congrats.
