NFL week 3 open thread

posted at 12:00 pm on September 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Well, so much for predicting that the Steelers would stay on a roll!  Jay Cutler finally found himself and outplayed the Steeler defense when it counted, a defense that misses Troy Polamalu even more than I’d feared.  They play in Cincinnati today, and the Bengals look like they’ve improved over last year’s embarrassing effort.  It’s going to be a tough game, but I still have to pick the Steelers to win in a shootout, 34-31.  If they don’t beat the Bengals, they’re going to find themselves at 1-2 and looking at Bengal backsides for a good part of the season in the AFC North.

What about the other games around the league today?

  • San Francisco at Minnesota – The 49ers have jumped out to a surprisingly strong start, powered by some old-fashioned running and a good defense.  Minnesota has too many answers for the upstarts, but this should be a really fun game to watch.  Brett Favre could make the difference here — in either direction, but I’ll pick the Vikes to win, 24-17.
  • Washington at Detroit – Get ready for this, because I’m picking the Lions.  They’re a better team than last year, although not a good one yet, and they played Minnesota tough last week.  This will be the week they get off the schneid, 17-14.
  • Kansas City at Philadelphia – Only interesting for the debut of Michael Vick, who becomes eligible this week.  Hometown crowd will give him a full-throated welcome, and KC will roll out the welcome door mat for him.  38-14 Eagles.
  • Tennessee at New York Jets – Tennessee really needs a win here, but they won’t get one.  The Jets are for real this year, and at home, they will edge the Titans, 21-20.
  • Carolina at Dallas – As much as I’d like to see the Panthers recover their wits and play the Cowboys tough, I just can’t pick them over the ‘Boys.  Dallas gets its first win in their new stadium, a punt will hit the scoreboard, and Jake Delhomme will lost three picks in a 27-10 beating.

Update: Er, week three, not two.

That’s how the Cowboys started last season.

It’s the Jets. Don’t get cocky.

catmman on September 27, 2009 at 4:15 PM

UNBELIEVABLE!

42 yards, 2 seconds left, Favre makes a miracle throw

John the Libertarian on September 27, 2009 at 4:16 PM

Congrats Detroit. Time to take off the paper bag for a week.

disillusioned on September 27, 2009 at 4:18 PM

…the Giants just went 3-0 also. Since we’re being totally ridiculous anyway, dare we say… “subway Superbowl?”

MUA HA HA HA!

Jazz Shaw on September 27, 2009 at 4:13 PM

That would be the cherry on the sundae. Or the “Sunday”

It’s early…but it’s a tasty early…no complaints!

catmman on September 27, 2009 at 4:15 PM

FWIW, Jets fans certainly know the agony of defeat. Well. Too Well.

3-0…and the only way is up this year tho!

JetBoy on September 27, 2009 at 4:20 PM

Well, enough celebrating over that one. It’s time for Ed to check in here for *his* game and for me to see if my reverse curse will make the Steelers win.

Jazz Shaw on September 27, 2009 at 4:24 PM

Here we go Steelers!!!

scrubbiedude on September 27, 2009 at 5:18 PM

Wow that 49ers/Vikes game was a killer. Now instead of a REAL game we get Denver/Oakland…..

LL

Lady Logician on September 27, 2009 at 5:18 PM

WOW!!! The Vikings aren’t an elite team but Favre’s still got it. Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable.

LFRGary on September 27, 2009 at 5:26 PM

Jazz Shaw on September 27, 2009 at 1:37 PM

Sanchez said (in the post game press conference) that he is pretty much expecting to get his hand spanked for that play when they go over film tomorrow.

The Steelers are trying to give the game to the Bungles, but that’s a difficult thing to do.

forest on September 27, 2009 at 6:04 PM

LL, my condolences on getting stuck with the Broncs-Raiders. Look on the bright side. At least you had TV. My cable TV went out last night. I won’t get it back until Tuesday.

GRRRRR!!!

LFRGary on September 27, 2009 at 6:06 PM

The Steelers are trying to give the game…

forest on September 27, 2009 at 6:04 PM

A game can never be easy, they’re playing well but some unfortunate mistakes is keeping it close. Nice TD Big Ben, let’s get that red zone offense going!

disillusioned on September 27, 2009 at 6:18 PM

The Saints are beating the Bills. Hang in there “who dat” fans.

Dire Straits on September 27, 2009 at 6:40 PM

CPT. Charles on September 27, 2009 at 7:10 PM

first Penn State loses, and now the Steelers. this week isn’t starting off to well for me. all I need now is for somebody to pour sugar in my gastank and the week will be complete. :(

disillusioned on September 27, 2009 at 7:13 PM

This is the worst football day ever. I’ll never hear the end of the Steelers losing to the Bengals.

Scott P on September 27, 2009 at 7:18 PM

So last week I picked the Steelers to win and they lost. This week I picked them to lose to the Bengals (nearly a mathematical impossibility) and they still manged to lose.

Next week I predict a tie.

Jazz Shaw on September 27, 2009 at 7:22 PM

Scott P on September 27, 2009 at 7:18 PM

All the local teams; Pitt, WVU, PSU and the Steelers all blew double digit leads in their most recent games. It’s been annoying.

forest on September 27, 2009 at 7:25 PM

Congrats Bengals.

Looking forward to the Steelers popping your bubble at Heinz. We are just teasing and making you think you really have a shot.

CWforFreedom on September 27, 2009 at 7:25 PM

Palmer to Caldwell…

BallisticBob on September 27, 2009 at 7:26 PM

I will not gloat about the Steelers losing. I will not gloat about the Steelers losing. . . .

WannabeAnglican on September 27, 2009 at 7:27 PM

Kiss the baby!!

Osis on September 27, 2009 at 7:29 PM

Good grief, when are the Steelers going to play a second half?? Limas Sweed just punched hit ticket out of Steeltown at the end of the season. Still a lot of football season left.

notashamed on September 27, 2009 at 7:33 PM

WHO DEY

Not sure how they mangaged to pull that one off; the first half was so one-sided that I almost bailed at halftime.

tsj017 on September 27, 2009 at 7:37 PM

I found it interesting to see the Seattle NFL team adopting the rave green that is sported by the Seattle MLS team (Sounders FC). Are they toying with a unified Seattle sports brand built around the green? It would be cool to see the popularity of American football used to promote association football.

DaveS on September 27, 2009 at 7:37 PM

I will not gloat about the Steelers losing
/////
It’s okay,GLOAT!!!!!!

ohiobabe on September 27, 2009 at 7:43 PM

I heard an interesting theory about Seattle’s ugly green jerseys: It makes their receivers easier to see.

With their normal uniforms, they just blend in with the grass.

WannabeAnglican on September 27, 2009 at 7:50 PM

WannabeAnglican on September 27, 2009 at 7:27 PM

Dude, I think you just did.

Not that I blame you.

CWforFreedom on September 27, 2009 at 7:25 PM

To be fair, I figured they were going to blow it [as usual] at the last 12 minutes, but then I saw them go for it at 4 and 2, I went ‘Woah! This could be different.’

Wisely, they ran the clock down as much as humanly posssible; the Steelers have more ‘trick’ plays than Soros has bank accounts.

It was a genuinely good game. I little nerve-wracking, but good.

Better luck next time.

BTW-thank that receiver for wasting 11 seconds after that final on-side kick; the lateral made my heart stop, but he should’ve just given up when he saw the mob of striped helmets in front of him. Oh well, live and learn.

CPT. Charles on September 27, 2009 at 7:55 PM

That was terribly frustrating watching the Bears squeeze by the Seahawks. Seneca Wallace is a B to B+ QB from the Hawks own goal line to the opponents 20 yard line. As soon as he gets near the red zone, he just shuts down. The Hawks had one TD and 4 FGs. The TD came about because the Bears blew coverage on a screen pass. Oh I hope Hasselbeck is a fast healer.

Mallard T. Drake on September 27, 2009 at 8:16 PM

Da Bears!!!

chicagojedi on September 27, 2009 at 8:24 PM

BTW-the Lions won.

Is that the 5th or 6th sign of Apocalypse?

CPT. Charles on September 27, 2009 at 8:30 PM

YAY!!! Bengals beat shitzburg! It almost makes all the beers their fans have poured on my head worthwhile.

HellCat on September 27, 2009 at 8:33 PM

Bronco’s WIN, Rockies WIN, & Da Bears WIN. Another Sunday worth waiting for. Had to catch the Bronc’s at a sub-par sports bar, but worth the effort. How many sports bars still don’t have full HD? Yech.

Fynxbell on September 27, 2009 at 8:36 PM

It almost makes all the beers their fans have poured on my head worthwhile.

That’s alcohol abuse!

mike_NC9 on September 27, 2009 at 10:08 PM

Though I am a die-hard Bears fan, I want to write about another team in the NFC North – the Lions.

The Lions’ fans have suffered through so much for so long – and it of course goes beyond football. When I watch a Lions game on TV each Thanksgiving, I see a full stadium of fans loyal to their team, no matter how bad the Lions have been. Yeah, last season some people wore bags over their heads and carried signs asking for a Lions bailout, but it just got to a point last year where the fans had to vent for a while, and who could blame them? The people of Detroit deserve a lot of credit, and I have much respect for their sticking with their team through such bad times.

And so, Detroit Lions, congratulations on getting that regular season win today. Finally, your loyal fans can celebrate. I hope Matthew Stafford will lead the way toward getting more wins for the Lions (except for when they play Da Bearsss).

OneVision on September 27, 2009 at 10:24 PM

Saints for real?

Del Dolemonte on September 27, 2009 at 10:56 PM

CPT. Charles on September 27, 2009 at 8:30 PM

Lions can’t win. They are my source of cheap NFL merchandise. And good looking stuff, too, which made people in DC wonder about me.

(Sigh.) Here I go to ebay.

IlikedAUH2O on September 27, 2009 at 10:56 PM

Bears win!! I love it! Hoping we annihilate the Lions next week! Keep on rollin’ boys!

MannyT-vA on September 28, 2009 at 2:11 AM

Great weekend for Ohio football fans. Bengals, Buckeyes and Bearcats.

RustBelt on September 28, 2009 at 7:12 AM

Congrats to the Lions for getting that monkey off their backs. How bad must the Redskin’s fans feel today? This Colts fan feels pretty good for the win last night, but not so great about the banged up defensive line. Only three games in. No time to get giddy or morose.

SKYFOX on September 28, 2009 at 8:32 AM

A bad football weekend for Pennsylvania. First Penn State, then the Steelers.

rightwingprof on September 28, 2009 at 8:42 AM

Hey ED. I have just a dash of sympathy for you as my Seahawks blew a winnable game…..waiting to see who is our new kicker.

hawkman on September 28, 2009 at 9:42 AM
