Obama to Iran: Let me be clear — it’s time to choose

posted at 3:08 pm on September 26, 2009 by Allahpundit

Is it? Bush issued this same ultimatum maybe 500 times and yet here we are, still wringing our hands over whether Russia and China will agree to one more turn of the economic ratchet. Ask yourself: If you’re Khamenei, knowing per the North Korean example that the west will go on negotiating with you forever even after you’ve got the bomb, why not plow ahead and build one? Then you can come back to the table, nuclear leverage in hand, and bargain for some sort of treaty in return for sanctions being lifted. The One and the media may believe that the time for talk is over, but the grand lesson of the Iranian nuke kabuki over the past seven years is that it’s never really over. Especially since bombing isn’t much of an option:

My friend Olivier Knox of AFP reminds me that in May, former Bush State Department official Nicholas Burns testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about Iran, and said: “Some continue to argue that the only way to halt Iran’s accelerating nuclear research effort is through American or Israeli air strikes. But, there is no convincing scenario where such use of military force would work effectively to end the Iranian nuclear program. Even worse, air strikes would undoubtedly lead Iran to hit back asymmetrically against us in Iraq, Afghanistan and the wider region, especially through its proxies, Hezbollah and Hamas. This reminds us of Churchill’s maxim that, once a war starts, it is impossible to know how it will end. An America that is already waging two difficult and bloody wars should be wary of unleashing a third. Choosing military power at this stage would surely be precipitous and unwise.”

That’s from Tapper, who reasons that because Iran’s been caught cheating three times, maybe they’ll finally give up on the nuclear dream. Er, isn’t it more likely they’ll conclude that since there’s no real penalty for cheating, they might as well keep on chasing it? Stalling for seven years bought them enough time to see a president who might attack replaced by one who certainly won’t; if the strategy ain’t broke, why fix it? Tapper’s logic makes sense if and only if you think that the Qom site is Iran’s only secret bomb-grade enrichment facility, which would mean that they now have no way of building a bomb on the sly (for the moment). But there’s no reason to believe that’s true: For one thing, as I’ve noted ad nauseam, U.S. intelligence suspects them of having up to 15 secret sites, and for another thing, the existence of the Qom site almost certainly implies the existence of at least one more as-yet-unrevealed facility to convert the uranium that Iran planned to enrich at Qom. Quoth the AP:

The revelation suggests a network of facilities, including ones with centrifuges that would enrich uranium at much higher speed and efficiency than previously known sites…

George Perkovich, an Iran expert at Washington’s Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, suggested Iran must be building at least one other unreported facility, a uranium conversion plant to provide feedstuff for the newly disclosed enrichment plant. That’s because the Iranians’ known conversion plant, at Isfahan, is under IAEA oversight.

“Why would you have a secret enrichment plant under a mountain if you don’t have a secret conversion plant?” he asked.

Mark Fitzpatrick, a senior fellow for nonproliferation at the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, said there has been suspicion for some time — but no concrete evidence — that Iran had been working on a second uranium conversion facility to supplement the one at Isfahan, and he agreed that if Iran had an enrichment plant, it would also need a facility to produce the gasified uranium.

Bear in mind, too, that the Iranians have always been keenly aware of Saddam’s mistake in centralizing his nuclear program in one location at Osirak, which made it easy pickings for Israel’s air force. That’s why they’ve put their nuclear eggs in a bunch of different baskets spread out across the country — and if they were smart enough to do that, they’re almost surely smart enough to have built redundant facilities in case an IAF airstrike succeeded in taking out Natanz or Qom or some other secret enrichment site. In the very dry words of the Washington Times, “Some nuclear experts noted that the discovery of a clandestine site suggests that Iran could have many more.” No foolin’.

The Iran bit here starts at 3:05. For more background on how yesterday’s big announcement ended up being made yesterday, see either the Wash Times piece or the NYT’s similar report this morning. In a nutshell, U.S. intel knew about the site for years but not until this summer did activity there start picking up. Obama planned to go public with the info at some point to pressure Iran, Russia, and China about sanctions, but his hand was forced this week after Iran sent a surprise letter to the IAEA acknowledging the facility — which it did, or so the theory goes, because it finally realized that western intelligence had found out about the site and was about to expose it. Exit question: How’d Iran find out that we knew?

Incidentally the target of any strikes should not be the nuclear sites but the Iranian leadership. Decapitation strikes are really the only option that has a chance of success.

Following the election fiasco, the Iranian ruling classes aren’t very popular these days with rank and file Iranians. I strongly doubt the Iranian masses would rally around this scum simply because their nation was attacked.

The time has come for some kind of decisive action against Iran.

Unfortunately, we have Osama Obama calling (or, more accurately, not calling) the shots.

The best we can hope for in the present state of “leadership” in D.C. is that once Iran has shot a couple of nukes into Israel, the Chicago Jesus will rebuke them severely for exposing the Palestinians to radiation.

And if the Iranians don’t straighten out, they won’t get invited to the Eid dinner at the White House.

Obama needs to admit that he hasn’t the slightest idea of how to deal with — well — anything, and then resign.

Or he needs to be impeached as a horrible risk to the USA.

Whichever comes first is right….

Unlike Obama, who will most likely surrender to Iran on the second Wednesday of November 2012 if he’s not reelected, the Israeli leaders will fight.

There’s going to be a bombing or two in Iran. Obama will choose to have been for it or against it, depending on the prevailing winds.

The only question is when.

This will expose Obama on several fronts. He will not do anything against Iran without consent from members of the security council, and you can forget any kind of military action. Look to Obama to make this the key issue and put Afganistan in the back burner. He will let Rahm spearhead the healthcare bill and order it passed while pretending to deal with Iran. Isreal has broken away from Obama’s administration after the sissy spectacle with Sarkozy and brown. Isreal shall be left to take out the Nuclear sites alone, but they will be condemned by Obama. Should Obama lash-out at Isreal, He will be done.

Let’s get this straight. Iran is run by a bunch of nihilistic lunatics who are determined to build this nuke unless someone stops them. No amount of idle threats and wishful thinking is going to change that fact.

And there’s more than a few in the Iranian government who want to use this nuke ASAP in order to fulfill their deranged religous prophecies.

I know it’s hard to believe that people think that way, but that’s the way it is. The Israelis already accept this reality and are prepared to do something about it.

People may think bombing is not an option now, but at some point it will be our only option other than giving in to these barbarians.

Nuke the site country from orbit – it’s the only way to be sure.

All kidding aside, this can’t be allowed to happen. Yes, bombing them would be ugly – the alternative is to accept that somewhere, someday, these guys will let a nuke loose on somebody. Who are we going to blame when that happens?

Wasn’t the Israeli attack on Iraq’s nuke plant successful because it caught them totally off guard and they weren’t expecting it? Iran is probably ready and waiting for an attack so I don’t even know if they could pull it off. They would need a lot of help.

Also I’m wondering if Obama has put Afghanistan on the back burner in order to deal with this Iran threat first. Not a good time to be POTUS. He’s got to do something but what? Try and pull off a regime change?

Eventually both China and Russia are going to get pissed off enough at Iran where they’ll smash them into the dirt themselves. The reason being of course Iran has been the chief irritant in the middle east, wanting to force their brand of islam on everyone there, but the unspoken bit of it is that they are also inciting the muslims in China and the old soviet union into violence. We don’t hear alot about that.

Eventually it’s going to come to the point where China and Russia are going to want to snip that crap off at the source, and that not only means no nukes for Iran, it means no viability as a world power when all that’s left sticking out of the dirt is the tops of their heads.

Ditto with Iran, so far. Hence your use of the comparatives ‘increased’ and ‘further.’ So, WHAT ELSE will you do? The USA has been tapped-out of further economic sanctions to impose on Iran for a very long time and every other country able to effect such sanctions prefers to increase trade with Iran.

Obama to Iran: Let me be clear — it’s time to choose

Yeah give up you’re Nuke program or Obama will send you a harshly worded letter just like he did to North Korea.

Hellrider on September 26, 2009 at 6:41 PM

Barry will follow the Clinton’s old failed plan with the North Koreans. Barry will try to bribe the Iranian to appear to be complying. The Iranians will take the money and continue their programs in secret, and come back for more blackmails in a couple of years. Barry will cave again… and so on and so on.

bayview on September 26, 2009 at 6:45 PM

Yes a swift démarche will clear everything up… and be worth the paper it is printed on.

Iran’s leadership is one deep: they have no follow-on coterie groomed to take their places. Apparently they actually believe in their fantastical ideology about a 12th Imam, end times and all that. So the ‘hands dirty’ way is to take out the leadership either via some lovely air delivered ordnance or from air delivered snipers.

The second way, since the entire economy is in shambles and the petroleum industry is also teetering on the brink of extinction, is a lovely set of passes at the petroleum pipelines with some ammo types that are so common around the world it is impossible to trace. 7.62×39 is a good one for that… that and some RPG-7′s delivered at a few hundred miles of pipeline plus one or two pumping stations will bring down the Iranian economy in, oh… a week. Repeat as necessary using stealth or ground operatives depending on terrain. Also hit the natural gas pipelines as Iran is a net importer of the stuff. Don’t PO Turkmenistan over-much, maybe offer them some side payments like someone did to extort higher prices from Iran last year… and it wasn’t, necessarily, Gazprom.

Otherwise, contact the Baluchs for a few hit jobs as they are the one terrorist set-up that Iran can’t control and it is inside their own borders. They have been competent although sparing in attacks so they don’t leave a good set of traces to track them by. A nudge or two, here and there, and maybe a hint that if they do that and break away from Iran we will support an independent Baluchistan… which would PO Pakistan but thems the breaks.

Or talk to the Kurds about some lovely support for their cousins in Iran. Some side help to the Azeris, too, just might get a few things rolling.

A few surreptitious phone calls to the Iranian Army might yield some patriots willing to keep Iran from becoming a glassy surface in the Middle East.

Mind you these would take courage, guts, determination, some underhanded work and ‘nuance’ to cover things. Unfortunately ‘nuance’ by its lonesome is weakness, because it is covering the fact you aren’t doing a damned thing. Which is what we have now.

ajacksonian on September 26, 2009 at 6:49 PM

The way to finally end this is to invade Iran from the east and west. End the constant drip of weapons to Islamic killers, show the world what happens when you plot to nuke for terrorism, and finally clean the slate with these criminals going back to the 1970′s. We keep putting it off. It must be done.

..and Aquavelvajad and his cronies are rolling on the floor with laughter, tears streaming down their faces, saying, “Guess what old ‘BB’ balls in the U.S. just said!”

Here we go again, folks. The arugula-breathed Pandload-in-Chief has just acquired his own Saddam Hussein.

Yellowcake, anyone?

VoyskaPVO on September 26, 2009 at 7:09 PM

So you guys think that we should go to war with Iran tomorrow? Because it’s pretty much diplomacy or war at this point.

HeroesforGhosts on September 26, 2009 at 7:10 PM

Obama won’t do anything. Only delusional American liberals think he has any guts. The rest of our countries enemies know better.

Israel will be forced to act.

Get ready for a depression, stock gas and food. Things are going to get rough for a while.

Barry’s good a setting deadlines. It’s the followup that he sucks at. How many “lines in the sand” is he going to draw? Before he draws some more?

In a nutshell, U.S. intel knew about the site for years but not until this summer did activity there start picking up.

Can someone help me out here? I recall back around 2006 that some intel report came out that said Iran had halted its nuclear program. I distinctly remember this because lib talking heads were making a big deal about this as it removed any justifcation for Bush taking military action against Iran. Am I missing something?

What happened to the tersely worded memos? Didn’t those solve things? Hard to beleive those had no effect…

Let me be clear, it’s time for you to choose Barack! Iran has clearly already made their choice.

I’m still laughing about the “WTF blanket.” See above.

“Look, you guys, I’m totally pursing my lips now. I’m really, really serious this time.”

Diane on September 26, 2009 at 6:11 PM

How many here think a) the lip pursing thing looks REALLY gay, and b)Barry is gay? Expecting some really funny answers.

tigerlily on September 26, 2009 at 7:39 PM

Obama is a pathological narcissist. He has delusions of grandeur and believes he can make the world adore him. Other global tyrants have also fit this diagnosis. Very scary.

MADgirl91 on September 26, 2009 at 7:46 PM

That’s why they’ve put their nuclear eggs in a bunch of different baskets spread out across the country

Well, the Nazi war machine was also spread around Germany, and the allies bombed it out of existence. Intelligence is key of course.

runner on September 26, 2009 at 7:48 PM

In a nutshell, U.S. intel knew about the site for years but not until this summer Obama’s overtures did activity there start picking up. Obama planned to go public stay mum with the info at some point forever to pressure shield Iran Russia, and China about from sanctions, but his hand was forced this week after Iran sent a surprise pre-empted letter to the IAEA acknowledging the facility — which it did, or so the theory goes, because it finally realized that western intelligence had found out about the site and was about to expose it Iran was safe from any punishment. Exit question: How’d Iran find out that we knew?

Answer : The CIA lies all the time !!!!

macncheez on September 26, 2009 at 7:49 PM

talk about kicking the can down the road, first the deadline was sept, now it’s dec….sanctions never work, are we going to go through 15 more UN resolutions like we did with saddam before we the bull by the horns?

They have already chose you stupid cow! Go ask MO for your balls back!

jbh45 on September 26, 2009 at 8:05 PM

It has always been my belief that US intelligence saw this coming, from a long way off. Iran has been in a declared state of war against the US since 1979; and has done nothing to bring themselves into the realm of nations that were in any way committed to freedom and peace.

It always seemed to me that G.W. Bush saw this, and invaded Iraq in part to have a defensive/offensive force in place in the region, to both contain Iran’s ambitions, and to strike forcefully if required.

If the war in Iraq had been more forcefully executed (in the early stages) we would have had just that.

Dear Ahmadingdong:

In case you haven’t heard, we’re under new management here. I have a lot of domestic problems to clear up, so I don’t really have the time or energy to deal with you and your fellow nutbars. So here’s the deal. You have four hours to get your scrawny ass on international television and announce that you are totally abandoning your nuclear program. I want to see all your nuclear goodies out in the sunshine and stacked up nice and neat like a big Iranian garage sale. We’ll take it from there, but I would suggest that people move at least five miles from each site, if you get my drift.

Why should you do this, you are prolly asking yourself? Because I see that you are currently located at 2547 4th and Hezbollah avenue, and, if for some reason, you decide not to comply, a nice big bomb will drop down on your noggin. Tell your ayatollahs or whatever that we also have them in our sites, courtesy of our satellites, and will deliver the same fate to them.

You now have three hours and thirty minutes to comply, so chop-chop.

Have a nice day, asshole.

Love,
Emperor justltl

P.S. When you go on television, I want you to have shaved your head and be wearing a big red clown nose and a pair of chaps- nothing else. That’s so as to humiliate you in front of the world for my amusement.
Sucks to be you.
Three hours and twenty minutes to go. Tick tock.

justltl on September 26, 2009 at 8:09 PM

Airstrikes are coming whether Obama wants them or not.

elduende on September 26, 2009 at 8:10 PM

My brother in Chicago tried for 2 years to get a doctor under the Obama program there. Couldn’t figure it out. Not gonna happen. Money probably went to A-porn.

He gets treatment from a clinic at the local hospital, pay what you can. Doesn’t that make more sense?

PattyJ on September 26, 2009 at 8:11 PM

As clear as mud.

Obama’s nose-in-the-air thing is disgusting. Better men than him have sat at that desk in the Oval Office and I’m willing to count Clinton but not Carter.

Far as I’m concerned, Obama sits there because of Affirmative Action–a gimme–and, once he’s voted out, there won’t be another black president for at least another half-century. I wonder how many others around the world also think the same thing, especially in Iran.

The way to stop Iran is to bomb not just Qom but as many of their nuke sites as we can, plus their major military bases. Butcher their Quds Force and Revolutionary Guard units as they sleep in their barracks using fuel/air munitions, and trash their air force on the ground. Wreck their missile sites and construction facilities, too, all in one fell swoop (about 24 hours or less).

One strike won’t solve the problem so, if we’re going to stop them, the assault has to be massive but not a full-blown war involving an invasion of Iran.

Obama won’t do any of it, of course. He won’t even talk tough. His nose is too high in the air to see what’s happening on the ground beneath his feet.
