Obama to Iran: Let me be clear — it’s time to choose
posted at 3:08 pm on September 26, 2009 by Allahpundit
Is it? Bush issued this same ultimatum maybe 500 times and yet here we are, still wringing our hands over whether Russia and China will agree to one more turn of the economic ratchet. Ask yourself: If you’re Khamenei, knowing per the North Korean example that the west will go on negotiating with you forever even after you’ve got the bomb, why not plow ahead and build one? Then you can come back to the table, nuclear leverage in hand, and bargain for some sort of treaty in return for sanctions being lifted. The One and the media may believe that the time for talk is over, but the grand lesson of the Iranian nuke kabuki over the past seven years is that it’s never really over. Especially since bombing isn’t much of an option:
My friend Olivier Knox of AFP reminds me that in May, former Bush State Department official Nicholas Burns testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee about Iran, and said: “Some continue to argue that the only way to halt Iran’s accelerating nuclear research effort is through American or Israeli air strikes. But, there is no convincing scenario where such use of military force would work effectively to end the Iranian nuclear program. Even worse, air strikes would undoubtedly lead Iran to hit back asymmetrically against us in Iraq, Afghanistan and the wider region, especially through its proxies, Hezbollah and Hamas. This reminds us of Churchill’s maxim that, once a war starts, it is impossible to know how it will end. An America that is already waging two difficult and bloody wars should be wary of unleashing a third. Choosing military power at this stage would surely be precipitous and unwise.”
That’s from Tapper, who reasons that because Iran’s been caught cheating three times, maybe they’ll finally give up on the nuclear dream. Er, isn’t it more likely they’ll conclude that since there’s no real penalty for cheating, they might as well keep on chasing it? Stalling for seven years bought them enough time to see a president who might attack replaced by one who certainly won’t; if the strategy ain’t broke, why fix it? Tapper’s logic makes sense if and only if you think that the Qom site is Iran’s only secret bomb-grade enrichment facility, which would mean that they now have no way of building a bomb on the sly (for the moment). But there’s no reason to believe that’s true: For one thing, as I’ve noted ad nauseam, U.S. intelligence suspects them of having up to 15 secret sites, and for another thing, the existence of the Qom site almost certainly implies the existence of at least one more as-yet-unrevealed facility to convert the uranium that Iran planned to enrich at Qom. Quoth the AP:
The revelation suggests a network of facilities, including ones with centrifuges that would enrich uranium at much higher speed and efficiency than previously known sites…
George Perkovich, an Iran expert at Washington’s Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, suggested Iran must be building at least one other unreported facility, a uranium conversion plant to provide feedstuff for the newly disclosed enrichment plant. That’s because the Iranians’ known conversion plant, at Isfahan, is under IAEA oversight.
“Why would you have a secret enrichment plant under a mountain if you don’t have a secret conversion plant?” he asked.
Mark Fitzpatrick, a senior fellow for nonproliferation at the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, said there has been suspicion for some time — but no concrete evidence — that Iran had been working on a second uranium conversion facility to supplement the one at Isfahan, and he agreed that if Iran had an enrichment plant, it would also need a facility to produce the gasified uranium.
Bear in mind, too, that the Iranians have always been keenly aware of Saddam’s mistake in centralizing his nuclear program in one location at Osirak, which made it easy pickings for Israel’s air force. That’s why they’ve put their nuclear eggs in a bunch of different baskets spread out across the country — and if they were smart enough to do that, they’re almost surely smart enough to have built redundant facilities in case an IAF airstrike succeeded in taking out Natanz or Qom or some other secret enrichment site. In the very dry words of the Washington Times, “Some nuclear experts noted that the discovery of a clandestine site suggests that Iran could have many more.” No foolin’.
The Iran bit here starts at 3:05. For more background on how yesterday’s big announcement ended up being made yesterday, see either the Wash Times piece or the NYT’s similar report this morning. In a nutshell, U.S. intel knew about the site for years but not until this summer did activity there start picking up. Obama planned to go public with the info at some point to pressure Iran, Russia, and China about sanctions, but his hand was forced this week after Iran sent a surprise letter to the IAEA acknowledging the facility — which it did, or so the theory goes, because it finally realized that western intelligence had found out about the site and was about to expose it. Exit question: How’d Iran find out that we knew?

Quote from the Corner:
“I hope the prior outrage over faulty intelligence and WMD and Iraq will extend to the latest incompetence — that intelligence agencies that swore in 2007 that Iran stopped working on the bomb in 2003 now, in 2009, have assured the president that their intelligence has disclosed a new Iranian facility that is not used for peaceful purposes.”

He somehow leaves out the facts that our troops are already in the region, and both of our current fronts are against irregular troops supported by Iran. If we went directly at Iran, it would square the circle, and get to the bottom of the issue once and for all.
North Korea is a bad example to rely on, as they are merely China’s id. Any time China wants to stir the pot, they use NK. Over 90% of the fuel and food in NK comes directly from China. If China really wanted the NK regime to fall, they could do it within a week by cutting off the supply. China is also backing Iran.
Is the picture becoming clearer now?

No war is ever completely won or lost, and in the long run we’re all dead anyway – so let’s just do nothing.
This is the problem with “contingency operations”: We’re so afraid to admit we’re engaging in warfare, that we end up permanently at war, and losing by inches, without ever admitting it to ourselves. Of course you can’t “permanently end” a program. As long as the country is a country willing to devote itself to nuclear development, it can theoretically re-start no matter how much damage we do to the existing nuke infrastructure.
The question isn’t whether or not Iran goes nuke, it’s whether or not the regime needs to be prevented from marrying genocidal and hegemonic aspirations with the military means to effectuate them. If that’s what we or the Israelis are willing to go to war to stop, then we can design our “operations” appropriately, with the understanding that the objective is to force the regime to change or be changed.

What Hot Air always does is beat the horse to death with slick analysis that they are sooooooo proud of but that never hits the Bulls Eye. What to hit the Bulls Eye on this vis a vis the Israelis? First, Israel has stones – unlike Team Obama and Bush (in his 2nd term); Second, Israel rightly understands it’s either Iran or Israel here since “assured reciprocal mass destruction” means nothing to the Muslims trying to get those 76 virgins or Domino’s pizza boys or whatever they lust after when their heads are down on the floor and their rear-ends up in the air for hours in those Mosques loaded with armaments and hidden weapons, Third, Israel does not prosecute Mossad – they honor them as heroes and take care of them and their families for life – thus Israel has superb intelligence, Fourth, Israel will start with Bunker Busters to soften up the psyche of the Mullahs and kill maybe 20 or 20 thousand Iranians, Fifth, then Israel (with The One and Team Obama and Russia screaming at them no doubt) will simply tell Iran, “Hey, you’ve got 24 hours to show us you’re blowing up every one of your research/reactor sites yourselves – if you don’t, we’ll start dropping nuclear bombs on them one by one – and we don’t give a sh__ about “collateral damage”. That’s how it’s going down. And all the BS from Hot Air and all their sophisticated “analysis” isn’t worth squat. You heard it here first.

Iran has adopted the same strategic thinking that NoKo has used for so many years. Threaten to start the centrifuges, kick out inspectors, claim to have a big program, hide the program, threaten neighbors, piss off the international community, watch international community wring hands, repeat as necessary until weaponse are at the ready to destroy Israel, hold Europe hostage or both.
Faith.

By dispersing their nuclear weapons program far and wide, they leave the Israelis (and us under new management one day) but one choice when the time is right…

The only nukes Iran should get are the ones we rain down on it if it tries to get nukes.
Of course, if non-nuclear strikes will accomplish the same end, restraint dicates that ordinary ordnance be used.

Thank you for reminding me of this quote…”Even worse, air strikes would undoubtedly lead Iran to hit back asymmetrically against us in Iraq, Afghanistan and the wider region, especially through its proxies, Hezbollah and Hamas.”
If ever there is a reason why Israel won’t agree to a third Palestinian State (the first Gaza, the second, Syria) it is they know the promise of their future should such a state be achieved: another proxy state for their enemies. And if you think giving them that state will achieve peace for the Israeli’s think Gaza where Hamas reigns supreme.

Bibi won’t hold back. When he returned recently I was silently gloating knowing that he would gob-smack the effete BO.
Netanyahu is a leader. Everything in his background gives him not only the historical perspective for taking the necessary actions but the moral imperative as well.
BO is nothing but a South Side Chicago street agitator. His perspective is that when something goes wrong, and he’s in danger the cops will arrest someone and put them away. That’s fine with Barry. Someone always saves his aZZ. He’s never, ever had any skin in any game. He’s never made any sacrifices much less anything for this country.
There is something much deeper at work in his attitude toward Israel, and Bibi knows it. Israel is on its own.
What this country has come to is shameful, and it’s something I thought I would never live to see.

It sure looks like Iran will get the bomb, and all the non-proliferation rhetoric from the U.N. was just that, rhetoric… meaningless rhetoric.
When Russia or China wants to see the USA hurt by Iran, ignoring the global instability issues such a policy creates, then it’s time to take away their veto power, or better yet, just disband the U.N. and start over. Russia or China has no place in an international organization premised on bettering our world.

500 times? I must have been traveling a lot those 8 years.
Still, it doesn’t matter. The Iranian authoritarian government only cares about itself. When it acquires a dozen or so nukes, it will use some on other Muslim countries, blame the Israelis and then lob some nukes at them too. They will then use their superior numbers to take over the Persian gulf while holding the US Navy and military at bay with their nukes. That is their end game. Removing Israel as a counter by using them as a patsy is all part of their plan. Ohamas is the perfect president for them to have in office in order for their plan to work because he is too afraid to use nukes himself.

so AJAD admits to the site, we are forced to play the card early and later Russia will say, well Iran is being honest about the site and agreeing to the IAEA inspectors so lets see how that goes (for the next 2 years) and they block sanctions again

I doubt the status quo will change without IDF intervention. It could be worse though.

In case you hadn’t noticed Mr. Burns, Iran has been waging asymmetrical warfare against us and our allies for thirty years.

If Iran gets the nukes, Israel will have a hard time existing. A few well placed small yield nukes will pretty much destroy their country. They will still have the significant nuke counter punch from their SLBMs, but by then Iran will have moved the bulk of its military outside of Iran, marching across the Persian gulf and hooking up with their other funded armies like Hezbollah. Unless Israel nukes the entire middle east, destroying Iran at that time will not stop them.

That’s actually because the media is making foreign policy while the President votes present, or absent.

A: Because it was never our intelligence to begin with.

I respect your analysis. But know this: Israel will never be defeated, Jerusalem will not be divided.
And, for the record, I’m not Jewish.

Uh. Because we had this intelligence for the last few years. Glowbama decided to spill.
Nice going, mister Arugula!

THAT PICTURE WITH HIS NOSE UP IN THE AIR….PRICELESS.
Wonder what Soros thinks of his puppet looking all cocky?
If I were the Iranians I would be laughing my head off at this guy. Obama will issue really mean and nasty sanctions or whatever. That the U.N. will cheat on. The Iranians will be emboldened and will try to strike Israel with their proxies (Hezbollah/The Syrians/Hamas).
Israel will retaliate like the world has never seen before and will destroy Damascus in a nuclear attack. The Israelis will serve notice….no more Masadas….no more Holocausts.
It’s not going to usher in the 12th Imam for the Iranian monkey but it’s going to usher in a large warming orange light in quite a few Iranian “hot spots” you might say.
Get your Popcorn……and gird your loins.
