McChrystal report officially backburnered now

posted at 12:37 pm on September 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

After everyone else had heard what General Stanley McChrystal needs for his mission to succeed in Afghanistan, the Obama administration took official custody today of the report that requests a significant troop increase for the Af-Pak theater.  However, Barack Obama will not officially get to see it for a while.  The Pentagon says they will hold his request, officially, until Obama officially makes an official decision about the officially official policy he wants to officially pursue in the war:

The commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan has submitted a request for more troops, a spokesman said Saturday, but the Pentagon will hold it while President Barack Obama decides what strategy to pursue.

General Stanley McChrystal hand delivered his long-awaited request to U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Admiral James Stavridis, said spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Tadd Sholtis.

“At the end of that meeting General McChrystal did provide a copy of the force requirements to Admiral Mullen on the U.S. side and Admiral Stavridis on the NATO side,” Sholtis said after McChrystal returned from the meeting at an air base in Germany. …

The White House says it wants to review the entire strategy for the region before considering McChrystal’s request.

“Right now the focus is on the strategic assessment itself. It (the troop request) will be shelved until such time that the White House is ready,” a defense official said in Washington.

Er … what?  Doesn’t the strategic assessment include required troop strengths?  McChrystal’s report should be a key part of those considerations, since the strategic considerations rely on having the force strength required to support the strategy.

Shelving the request makes it clear that Obama and the White House want to conduct a political review of the mission.  That’s not illegitimate; after all, part of the consideration has to be whether our allies have the political will to support us in the Af-Pak theater, as well as whether Americans have the political will to continue the fight.  If neither exists, then the entire question of strategy is moot, and the focus will shift to retreat from the theater.

The problem with this is that the Obama administration has already had plenty of time for political calculation.  They have been in office since January, and Obama campaigned for two years on the pledge to fight in Afghanistan with more resources and focus than the previous administration.  The politics of the war have not changed much, at least in terms other than polling.

Obama wanted to be Commander in Chief, and he has had that role for eight months.  The question of politics should have already been well settled by this time.  So far he has done a good job of fighting the war in Afghanistan, but this very public vacillation undermines the projection of American strength in the region and encourages a defeatist attitude.  It’s time to fish or cut bait on the politics and start seriously addressing the strategy, if we’re going to fight and win this war.

For the Lefties. Behold your CINC.

Key West Reader on September 26, 2009 at 5:23 PM

No, if they were wearing chadors they’d be dressed as chattel.

These are Marines. They are performing their duty in a way none of the armchair wannabee soldiers castigating them here can comprehend. Sometimes you shoot, sometimes you talk, and if you can talk and avoid shooting, that’s cool. And if a headscarf helps with the talking, so be it.

“Don’t even get me started on the successful assault by cultural Marxists on womanhood — and manhood — and thus our civilization through the long march of women through the military. The issue at hand, in that picture above worth at least 1,000 words, is the institutional degradation of US Marines under orders to submit to Islamic law in the line of duty. Forcing free American women-warriors into Islam’s symbolic shackles of the female sex — the hijab — goes beyond Pentagon social engineers’ pathetic efforts to make them like us. It is cultural humiliation. And far from winning Afghan “hearts and minds,” it will only make them despise our own.”

It is not modesty we are talking about; it is control. That aside, one can certainly show “respect” for many things without undergoing personal transformation. The more important question is, what manner of self-respect do these Marines show by so easily abandoning their country’s uniform and their own standards of decorum for Islam’s?”

“First Lt. Victoria Sherwood was undaunted, talking to him through her Afghan translator. She gave him painkillers for his back, and small presents for the children timidly clustering around. Some of them begged to try on her sunglasses, and promptly made off with them.

Sherwood, from Woodbury, Conn., got Gayom to promise he might let her into his compound to meet his wife, who he said with a shrug is “so old, the Taliban probably won’t care.”

But there was a snag: The translator was male. Could he be in the wife’s presence? “No way,” said Gayom, then asked the Marines for more goods….

If you want to cross out the word Proud to puff yourselves up in your own minds, go ahead. Those of us who recognize the mission will hold our laughter — at you.

Otherwise you defeat yourself.

“The Pentagon will hold it while President Barack Obama decides what strategy to pursue”. Huh. Didn’t he decide on March 27, 2009 his strategy and this was his pick as the general in-charge. So is he now going for Biden’s idea of a search and destroy methodology with a small grunt footprint against the enemy and let the Afghan government spin in the breeze? Anyone who has read anything about counter-insurgency knows that it takes more troops because you have to protect the people; that should have been clear in March and very clear it had to be American troops after our allies punted. We leaned that the hard way in Vietnam and Iraq but could have learned from the British in Malaysia. Doesn’t this man or any of his staff read about military history or listen to their military advisors.

The filthy liar had this report since August. It was supposedly part of his reading while lounging about the Hamptons.

It is also true that strategic changes take time. Short of all out effort, troop increases take months to plan because of the sustainment issues. That means that this is no time for the filthy liar in the White House to ignore the issue while the coward continues to stump for his failed healthcare ideas.

LET ME MAKE THIS SO CLEAR, that even idiots like Obama can understand…. American troops in Afghanistan are being killed. The Commanding General has asked for more troops. Instead of responding the filthy liar in the White House sent the request to voicemail. Our troops deserve better than the coward who is ex officio their CINC.

There are 4 dead Marines because they were refused artillery support when they were ambushed precisely because of Odummy’s rules of engagement.

Is your head so far up your messiah’s a$$ that you missed that?

jdkchem on September 26, 2009 at 1:18 PM

It also appeared that the merchant captain a while back was rescued IN SPITE of Ozero. I had been wondering why the seals didn’t shoot the terrs when the captain jumped overboard. Apparently the Golden Unicorn issued rules of engagement that prevented that.

My guess, and this is only a guess, is that the commander on scene basically said “screw my career, take the dirtballs out”.

This is also like the time, I believe it was somalia, where the Clintoon administration refused armor support (While at the same time they sent armor against the branch davidians in texas). Some other country provided the armor for the rescue.

I wonder if the obamamedia would cover it if the families of those killed by the dummie in chief’s policies staged a 24 x 7 vigil outside the whitehouse. er redhouse.

And as far as the snarky comment by some ozero lover a while back about “not loading weapons”, I won’t say where or when but I have had first hand experience with A$$inine rules of engagement. I’m not military but I did see it. BTW – that was under the Cigar Inserter in Chief’s Administration.

AnninCA on September 26, 2009 at 10:36 PM

What we WERE winning under GWB is that we were being proactive instead of reactive to an enemy that has been trying to destroy us since 700 AD.

I’ve worked with the military long enough to be able to make some educated guesses. Namely that there was enough intelligence gathered during the early Afghanistan operation to mandate that we move against Saddam and Iraq ASAP.

There are only three things that radical islam will accept from us non believers

a. Death
b. Conversion
c. Dhimmitude (A total submission to their law

That’s it, there is no other choice. Oh, and as far as the numbers of ‘radical islamists’, we are talking hundreds of millions.

Radical islam has been held in check previously through the efforts of leaders like Charles Martel and Jan III Sobieski when his 3000 winged Hussars smashed 30,000 Turks and Tatars at the battle of Vienna in 1683.

GWB, because of the politically correct environment, could not take the stance of Sobieski “First ve kill dem, den ve count dem”. He was hamstrung by the leftists and myopics in congress and the press.

To answer your question, I’m not sure what we are doing there now with our jugears in chief at the helm but whatever it is, it isn’t giving me a warm fuzzy feeling.

I had attended a speech by GWB where he did drop a hint as to his overall strategy. It was basically to give some of the people there a taste of freedom and democracy and hope it spreads. I’m not sure that would have worked under GWB and I’m almost certain it won’t work under the Chicago Community Acorn Organizer.

I thought it was rumored that McChrystal leaked this report to Woodward at the WashedupPost because it had been sitting on NObama’s desk since August 30 and now Ogabe wants to stall some more?

Meanwhile, our soldiers are trying to fight over there as best they can and too many are getting killed because of C-i-C NObama’s Kumbaya Rules of Engagement and his aversion to Victory as a military goal.

Jenfidel on September 27, 2009 at 12:10 PM

And, delaying a decision IS a decision…

Khun Joe on September 27, 2009 at 8:58 PM

Khun,

I think Obambi is worse than Carter. I am old enough to remember the hostage crisis. While Carter was hiding under his desk whining about “diplomatic immunity” and thinking those crazy radical islamic terrorists were going to play by the “kings rules of diplomacy”, our country was just winding down from LOSING the Vietnam war, again thanks to the liberals who gave up on victory.

Obambi is Commander in Chief to a STRONG military, albeit a reduced in size military, but still this military knows how to WIN. Instead, this pantywaste is wee weeing his pants because he doesn’t know what to do.

God Bless our troops and keep them safe!!!
